Wikipedia:Training/For students/Training feedback/archive 2

What I liked

The flow of the instructions and videos that aided in getting the messages across.

What I didn't like

The length of the instructions.

What was missing

Maybe more examples showing the dynamics of editing and publishing information.

Myriam.padron (talk) 17:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What I liked

content The training emphasized a systematic, gradual approach.

What I didn't like

Mainly that I didn't find this earlier. I've gotten into editing, myself, through far more random access points.

What was missing

As far as general introductions are concerned, I'd have to say "very little". While the presentation of of consensus-building was helpful overall and highly positive in terms of tone, I do believe there may be some value added by also acknowledging (howsoever briefly) some of the patently absurd consequences (e.g., "lamest edit wars", or "vandalism") which may ultimately result when editors occasionally do not, in fact, act in good faith.

What was unnecessary

The four tildes already included at the bottom of this particular edit window -- but hey! That may well just be me.  ;^) ;^)

Cheers!

What I liked

What I liked about this training is that it tells us exactly what to expect from Wikipedia and the assignment. For instance, we are all expecting that the information put into Wikipedia is accurate, reliable, valid, non-biased, and referenced.

What I didn't like

What I didn't like is that it only gives us very little direction when it comes to searching for articles that need revising. They need to be more specific in that area so that we know which articles need to be edited and which ones do not need editing.

What was missing

The orientation was missing more examples of articles that need to be edited, this is necessary so that we can see for ourselves which areas of a specific article need to be checked. Also, the orientation does not tells us where we can look for valid information to edit the articles.

What was unnecessary

It was unnecessary to watch videos on making bold and italic letters because it is much more necessary to have videos teaching us how to spot damaged articles that need revising.

MTmarc (talk) Training Feedback

edit
What I liked
The training is pretty exhaustive and gives a good preview of how to work with Wikipedia. The instructions and guidelines are concise and specific, plus the tone is welcoming and encouraging, which is very appreciated much by people who are new to this kind of projects.

...

What I didn't like
It is a lot of information to take in at once, and it does feel overwhelming. The sandbox in particular looks like it is very confusing to work with, but I suppose it is something that must be learned with practice.

...

What was missing
I have not worked with Wikipedia before, so I don't think I can make a fair judgement regarding any missing content in the tutorials.

...

What was unnecessary
All of the information provided by the training looks useful, so I do not think any of it was unnecessary.

What I liked

...I enjoyed the brief but useful videos since I consider myself a visual learner. Another part I enjoyed was the step by step tutorials given, especially in the third module. Lastly, I enjoyed the positive attitude reinforced throughout the whole training. It makes me look forward to working on this project.

What I didn't like

...Although there was not much I can recall not liking, I do feel that some parts of the fourth module were rushed, and filled with links that take you out of the module experience. There are some I actually opted to miss because I felt that opening them would make me miss something in the training. I am hoping it will be easier to go back and find those links.

What was missing

...I think a bit more "hands-on visuals" for access on communicating with others would do great. The part where the training focuses on the communication with other Wikipedians is missing videos similar to those included on the editing part of the third module.

What was unnecessary

...Although I understand the reasoning behind enforcing the assuming good faith rule, I do think it was a bit overstated by the fourth time I came across it.

What I liked

There wasn't anything in the orientation I didn't like. I found everything that was said helpful.

What was missing

I didn't feel like anything was missing. I thought that the orientation covered everything I needed to know, and then gave information about where to find more information about certain topics if needed.

What was unnecessary

Nothing was unnecessary, I felt that everything was necessary.

What I liked

I appreciated the video animations that broke down the different parts of Wikipedia into manageable steps.

What I didn't like

Some of the wording was confusing. Usually the videos clarified what was written, but for those subsections that did not have videos it was more difficult to understand the different steps of editing.

What was missing

After editing and saving in the sandbox, text appears as one long line across the browser. It is unclear whether spacing between lines must be manually entered or if this is just a feature of the sandbox.

What was unnecessary

It did not make sense that early in the training process it asked us to make an account, then later on it provided the videos about choosing a username.

I enjoyed the last page of the Orientation to help with other resources which might be needed for this project.

What I didn't like

The tutorial was well organized and easy to follow; there was nothing that I did not like.

What was missing

Maybe the tutorial could include a more extensive section on the talk pages because the discussions seem very important on Wikipedia and the means of communication between editors. It would make the talk page's importance more clear.

What I liked

Concise nature of every step was great. Learning a whole system of light coding/tagging can be a deterrent, but this was very short and accessible.

What I didn't like

Some of the videos along with the pages seemed superfluous. For example, when explaining how to bold something, a simple screen cap of the "B" button on articles and maybe a short, in-text example would have sufficed.

What was missing

I would have liked a HUD breakdown, for lack of a better term. A simple screenshot with arrows to important tabs and links, labeling them. This would help better understand when a tutorial makes reference to, say, the Sandbox but a user might not have noticed it at the top right corner. Also maybe a page on navigating another user's page.

What was unnecessary

The general opening page on community wasn't very useful. Saying that there is a website community doesn't do much unless you explain how to reach, contact, view, and dialogue with (in formats other than the Talk pages) other users.

What I liked

...I really liked that video tutorials were offered along with text explanations.

What I didn't like

...I felt that some sections could be longer, specifically the citation section because citation is a very important part to the article. Also there are many different types of citation so a little more clarity would be appreciated.

What was missing

...Not much was missing from what I could tell. The nuts and bolts were explained clearly.

What was unnecessary

What was missing

I thought the interactive videos were very helpful and showed exactly how to make certain edits, changes, etc. I also found the entire presentation to be pretty thorough, as it answered all the questions I had going into this as a first-time Wikipedia editor.

...

What I didn't like
The section about editing and accepting other peoples whole-scale edits was a bit odd to me. I am not used to someone being able to take a page I've created and completely rework the entire thing. Although I understand that multiple editing is a main feature of Wikipedia.

...Had to keep going to youtube for the vids

What was missing

...To soon to say

What was unnecessary

...Nothing that I could see

I would like to create a number of index pages to enable people to more easily locate the articles they are looking for. It's not always obvious what you should enter into the search bar. For instance if I wanted to find out who won the medals in table tennis at the 1988 Olympics it doesn't occur to me straight away that I should enter "Table tennis at the 1988 summer olympics" which in any case is a bit long. I would prefer to enter something like "Olympic results" which would then lead me to an index page full of links and from there I would click on the link which would take me to the required page. I hope you think this would be a good idea. This index article would by its nature not require any references, although there would be the occasional note to explain any apparent anomalies. I would appreciate your comments; I have already started work on an index page covering all summer and winter olympics in the modern era. If you feel that this kind of page is unnecessary please let me know so that I don't waste a lot of time on something that is not needed. Although I suppose people would soon let me know if they thought it was a superfluous page. Regards.

What I liked

...I enjoyed the set-up of the training in that it was interesting, detailed, and informative without feeling unnecessary or like a burden - the language was clear and concise, and the inclusion of links to other pages/videos enhanced the reader's understanding of those basic topics. The inclusion of those resources also allows individuals to seek further information on topics they may find particularly important or useful to their specific task without clogging up the basic training.

What I didn't like

...The pillars stress that authors shouldn't agonize about making mistakes - while that is true to an extent in terms of creating a comfort level for authors, it is important for information to be accurate, so I wonder if that statement should be re-phrased in order to keep the standards high.

What was missing

...The information regarding the transition from the sandbox to the page was a bit difficult to understand at first and took a couple of readings - perhaps having a clearer example of something moving forward from the sandbox would give the reader an easier method of understanding that process.

What I liked

...was that there were videos that took you step by step as to how to create your practice page in which you will use later on with Wikipedia.

What I didn't like

...is that as you create a Wikipedia page there are so many ways in which you have to remember to use a symbol for this and a symbol for that. Just a little to much.

What I liked: I thought the modules were very thorough in providing the necessary information to create a successful and informative article.

...

What I didn't like: It dragged on for a bit, but all the technological explanations were needed to get a clear understand of the whole Wikipedia editing and creating articles.

...

What was missing: I didn't think anything was missing. Maybe adding a more personable tutorial session will make the modules go by a little less slow. The content, however, should stay the same as it was essential to correctly complete the assignment.

...

What was unnecessary: I thought it was all necessary. Because I had never even thought of editing or creating my own article on the site, everything that was shared in the tutorials and modules were, as stated above, essential to my understanding of the process. Thank goodness there is this "orientation" to the site, I feel without it I would have been completely lost in navigating the site and might have unintentionally done something in violation of the Wiki core rules, etc.

What was missing

I have been wanting to learn how to engage with Wikipedia for a while now but it wasn't until there was an event sponsored on Twitter that I actually went through the steps to take the tutorial and learn.
