License tagging for Image:Nahuel Tank.jpg

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Nahuel Tank.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

TAM

edit

Hey,

I'm currently working on the TAM (tank) article, with the ultimate goal of taking it through featured article candidacy (as I do with all of my tank-related articles), but unfortunately the only really good source I own is Javier de Mazarrasa's La Familia Acorazada TAM, which is from Spain. Although another three books are used as sources where they can be used, the majority of the information provided is from the stated book. I was wondering if you knew of any other book published in Argentina which covered the TAM in detail, and where I can buy it. Although I believe that this article will pass the A-class review, I don't know if it will make it through the FAC with only one major source. I plan to masquerade this by adding a new section when I pick up one of my books from my cousin's car's trunk (de Mazarrasa's book Carro de Combate AMX-30E - also has details on Venezuela's AMX-30s) covering how the TAM compares to other tanks in service on the continent (mainly, Venezuela's AMX-30s, Brazil's Leopard 1A1s (I'm not sure when Brazil is supposed to get the "new" 1A5s) and Chile's recently acquired Leopard 2A4s). That way there will be an entire section with sources other than those already used, and it will look as if the article is far more versatile in regards to references. However, I'd still like to know if there are other good and detailed sourced on the TAM which I could buy. I'm avoiding websites because two of the ones I have visited (globalsecurity and FAS) are not reliable (some of their information is incorrect, at that) and any other websites are really not verifiable or reliable. In the article Nahuel (tank), of which you've written most of what is currently there, I see the book Blindados Argentinos, de Uruguay y Paraguay, Ayer y Hoy - does that contain any information on the TAM? If it does, I'd like to look for it and see if I could buy it on the internet.

In any case, thank you for your time. JonCatalán (talk) 04:51, 10 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your reply! I bought my copy of Mazarrasa's book while I was living in Spain, but you can probably find it on the internet (he is one of the most sold authors on this type of topic from Spain). In regards to how the TAM compares to other tanks, I would agree that when comparing armor and firepower the TAM is not in the same league as the Leopard 2, but I doubt the Leopard 2 would have the degree of mobility that the TAM has in the Pampas, or even in the Amazon jungle (referring more to Brazil - I would bet money that this is one of the reasons why they still hesitate about replacing their Leopard 1s with Leopard 2s). I mean, even Chile's Leopard 2s are deployed along the Peruvian border, as I doubt they would be as effective as the TAM in the mountains. I agree that the TAM could probably be upgraded, but I don't think the lack of money should define its role, which was my main argument - its role in the Argentine Army, in my opinion, remains the same as any other main battle tank. Although, I do consider the TAM a superior tank to the AMX-30 and Leopard 1 (it actually has greater armor protection!). And, I will continue looking for Fogliani's book. Thanks, again! JonCatalán (talk) 05:19, 12 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
I left some comments on the TAM page. JonCatalán (talk) 23:45, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey, you can purchase de Mazarrasa's book here. Also, here. Do you have the names to those magazines? Perhaps I could find them by emailing the editors? Thanks! JonCatalán (talk) 03:34, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Looking for help... How do I "bookmark" an article?

edit

Hi, would greatly appreciate if anyone can give me advice on how do I "bookmark" an article that I'd like to read later (as is usually done in "paper" books, including encyclopedias).
I've already placed a question in the Help Desk, maybe it's better to answer there.
Thanks & regards, DPdH (talk) 07:46, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, I don't know about "bookmarking", but you may click on the "watch" tab and it will place the article on your watchlist. When you're ready to view the list of articles of your interest, simply click on the "my watchlist" tab, and the articles you "watch" will be sorted by the latest timestamp in which the article was last edited. I hope that answers your question. Have a great day. - Jameson L. Tai talkguestbookcontribs 07:48, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the fast response. I ommitted here (but did mention in the Help Desk) to say that I'm already doing so, but there are heaps of articles that I'm not interested in tracking changes; but just mark them for later reference. Have a g'day too! DPdH (talk) 07:53, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

{{helpme}}

Your best bet is to create a subpage (say, User:DPdH/Bookmarks) and just populate it with a list of the articles you want to keep an eye on. Also, for future reference, please place the {{helpme}} tag with your question--makes it a bit easier for us! :) [roux » x] 08:07, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, good workaround, thanks. It'd be very nice if bookmark were a functionality already included in "Wikipedia". Maybe for a future release? Regards, DPdH (talk) 08:20, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Well, in that case, why not bookmark it with your browser instead? Depending on the browser you are using, bookmarking or marking a page in your favorites is relatively easy. - Jameson L. Tai talkguestbookcontribs 08:10, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fighter aircraft contributions

edit

I just wanted to drop you a note to express my appreciation for your efforts to contributing to improving the Fighter aircraft article and its offshoots. Please see my response to your question there and explained where we are in a long-term attempt to improve this set of articles. If you're interested in the subject, we can certainly use a few more hands! Cheers, Askari Mark (Talk) 03:40, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Right now, the main focus is the Fighter aircraft article, which is considered a “core article” for Wikipedia (one of those that any decent encyclopedia should have). Once we get that fixed up, we can export the improvements to the “1st Gen” and “4th Gen” articles. The main thing we need right now is to add sources for much of the extant text. Since so little has been cited yet and much of the material is pretty basic, there’s a lot of “low-hanging fruit” out there (from both online and print sources). If you haven’t worked that side of Wikipedia, it’ll be a good learning experience – not just about sourcing, but you may also find material worth adding. The article currently reflects the personal historical and technical knowledge of a handful of us that needs to be retroactively sourced; this approach has been driven by the short timeline given to clean up the article for WP 0.7. (I was actually working on overhauling the F-16 Fighting Falcon article, which I am still not finished with.) If we had held to finding sources as we went, there’s no way we could have shaped it up in time. What exists is pretty much a “go” for WP 0.7. Now, it’s more a matter of going back and doing it right with sourcing. That will help advance the article to where it can make GA or even FA class and thus qualify for WP 1.0. Does this sound like something up your alley? Best regards, Askari Mark (Talk) 04:44, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, most of my library is packed up and in storage, too. Something about having a family means having them expand to fill all space available – and only your space is negotiable! ;-) Askari Mark (Talk) 16:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Helibras

edit

DPdH, I could use some assistance on the Helibras article. (I know Spanish and Portuguese are related, and somewhat mutually intelligiable, so you might do better looking at this than I would, whterh or not you know Portuguese.) The current "products" list in our article makes it appear that Helibras manufactures 19 different types of helicopters, while the company's wabsite lists 11 models. What I'm unclear about is the extent in which Helibras actually contributes to these models in production. I believe Helibras assembles some Eurocopter modesl, and may be a subcontractor on others, but I am unable to distinguish between the two without a greater understanding of the language. WPArgentina

edit

The criteria used for topic, class and importance can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Argentina/Assessment. Thanks for the offer of help, but if you don't mind I would like to empty Category:Unassessed Argentine articles and Category:Unknown-importance Argentine articles all by myself. I have moved to this project recently and my idea is to fill my watchlist with argentine articles, to be able to track changes and revert vandalism on the periods I'm not editing. I know I can do that more easily by other means, like copying and pasting categories contents in it, but I thought it would be better to add them in a manner that helps along the way with maintenance. Speedy deletion nomination of Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 16:19, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Nomination of Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control for deletion

edit

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (2nd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Hell In A Bucket (talk) 21:50, 1 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control

edit

Hi there I can see you're confused as to how article should be if it's in mainspace, The article as it stands and the certification as it stands lack ntbility. You use the CISA article as a reason it should be kept but look at that article compared to yours. WP:GNG requires that the product be covered by third party sources which help validate if it's a notable product or ust something being sold. As is it appears right now that it's a non notable product that's being peddled on Wikipedia. If you think you need to beef it up consider making a subuserpage like User talk:DPdH/Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control once it meets the notability guidelines then move it to mainspace. Something I've learned in the 70 or so articles I've made if the notability is in question before you publish make sure you have at least three 3rd party sources when you publish and it may help avoid csd and deletions. Sunda Strait Bridge references

edit

Hi -- I notice that you have added a notification to the Sunda Strait Bridge page asking for more references. I have collected most of the material so I'd like to respond. The basic problem is that although this project is potentially an extremely important project for Indonesia, detailed information is very thin on the ground. I speak Indonesian fluently, and I have searched hard in Indonesian-language sources. The fact is that there just isn't much around. And that, indeed, is one of the main reasons that I looked for as much reliable information as I can find to post on Wikipedia. This page provides far more information about the proposed bridge that I think that one can find anywhere else. To be honest, I would have thought that most of the piece is fairly well documented, no? Apparently you do not agree. I guess, perhaps, that you would like to see more references to the sorts of items covered in (for example) the "Technical aspects" section? It is indeed possible to dig out some more reference on these issues but my own feeling is that it is, surely, not necessary to reference all sentences? Having said this, I note that somebody (I assume an Indonesian Wikipedian) has inserted the second sentence to the piece with a reference to one Professor Sedyatmo from Bandung. This piece of information is new to me and I don't know if there is a source for it. It may or may not be true. But it is harmless, I suppose. A bit irrelevant, really. You linking to "List of ships present in the International Fleet Review 2013".

edit

I propose you link to the main page of the RAN International Fleet Review on the ship's pages that were involved, instead of linking to List of ships present at International Fleet Review 2013. I also advise you to fix the new content from "In October 2013 [blank] participated" to "In October 2013 [ship name in italics] participated". Acalycinetalk 05:37, 6 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the suggestion, I already thought that but changed idea as the reference to the ships is in the list rather than in the IFR main article. As I'm doing the change manually (don't know how to use scripts or bots) it'll take me some time to implement your suggestion. Kind regards, DPdH (talk) 05:24, 6 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Parenthetical Referencing

edit

Wikipedia supports parenthetical referencing and it is not confusing. You find the first word in the citation in parentheses and then find it in the references below. The general feeling in Wikipedia is that the established referencing style should not be changed. I often add to and edit the diecast and modelling articles and find the in-line citations harder to construct. I request that you do not change the citation system (and Wikipedia supports parenthetical referencing). Thank you for your contributions--Cstevencampbell (talk) 15:11, 7 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the feedback, I've provided a response in your Talk Page. Regards, DPdH (talk) 23:06, 7 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
I've reviewed the citation style guidelines, and actually they discourage switching between "major styles" unless there is consensus that the change will be appropriate for the needs of the article. They also recommend that an edit notice is placed in each article using this style. I'll follow these recommendations. Regards, DPdH (talk) 07:04, 9 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the coffee. I needed the break ! I agree that in-line citations sometimes work better for the reader in longer articles only because you can roll over them and see the citation. Otherwise I think they are more confusing than parenthetical referencing. With parenthetical referencing you simply look up the cited first word and date in the references in alphabetical order. Works first time every time. In-line citations are confusing when you have multiple citations to one author as you are forced into the op cit garbage. And again, people have told me how easy in-line citations are to set up, but I still don't see it - they are a bunch of gobbledygook to arrange and with parenthetical references you just write them in and you are immediately finished. Anyway thanks for your help.--Cstevencampbell (talk) 17:07, 9 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, and first off, thanks for adding the table to the article. I'd ask that in the future, though, that you make sure that the references are consistent with what's already in the article, since it creates needless work to standardize later. Thanks. Argentine Air Force vs Army Aviation

edit

I would suggest you might want to read the relevant pages - the Argentine Air Force did not exist prior to 1945 - the Avro 504 was long gone by then, and it was operated by the Argentine Army Aviation.NiD.29 (talk) 06:47, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

As said, please check your sources. In the "Argentine Army Aviation" as such did not exist prior to 1954 (as stated in that wikiarticle), and the statement in the Argentine Air Force wikiarticle is not correct; the Air force predecessor is the Army Aviation Service which so far does not have an article on its own. Plus the Avro 504 is listed in verifiable sources as having been used by the Argentine Air Force. Please check sources and don't revert my edit. Thanks , DPdH (talk) 06:56, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I have "Servicio Aeronautico del Ejercito" (Army Aeronautical Service) or "Servicio de Aviacion Militar" (Military Aviation Service) formed in 1912... Army Aviation IS much closer than Air Force. Perhaps a redirect to the Air Force page with the correct title would be the best option until the historical page is written. I was merely trying to stop you from changing all the operators to an entity that didn't exist, rather than changing them all to the historically correct name(s), so no need for further undos.
I find that hard to believe when the last one is listed in my references as out of service in 1938. Perhaps you are be referring to museum aircraft kept nominally on strength? Not really the same as actually being operated by the Argentine Air Force.NiD.29 (talk) 07:44, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
If that was your intention (I've assumed your changes were in "good faith"), I agree so have redirected under the historical name as suggested. Can you please share your sources where those names are mentioned? I'm mostly using online ones (other than Wikipedia) and would like to double-check before starting amending other similar cases I've already found. Thanks & regards, DPdH (talk) 10:43, 31 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

La Plata vs El Plata

edit

Most of my English-language sources use La Plata, but I did find one that says that the ship was indeed named after the river and uses El. It would have been helpful if you'd provided a link to your source as almost any source at all on these ships would expand the small amount of coverage available on them. Which is one reason why they're still stubs.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 18:01, 2 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

"El" is correct not only semantically but historically. Yesterday I didn't have time to add links to both articles, and I'm providing a link today (sadly the source is in Spanish). I've been thinking on creating wikiarticles for these ships for a long time, and now that you've kicked-off with a "stub" I'm happy to contribute expanding them. Regards, DPdH (talk) 14:02, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Their technical specifications are pretty well covered in English, but there's very little available on their careers so your Spanish-language sources should prove to be very useful.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 14:19, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Both articles cover in depth the ships' careers, and I'm happy to translate and summarize those to expand the articles. Regards, DPdH (talk) 14:25, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

A-4 Skyhawk aircraft on display

edit

Greetings DPdH! About a year ago, you suggested on the A-4 Skyhawk talk page that the "Aircraft on display" section should be split into its own article. I believe this is still a needed improvement to the overall article, and no one else seems to be chiming in on the talk page....are you still willing to create that article? Cheers! Argentine Air Force in the Falklands War Suggestion

edit

Hi, Noticed you took an interest and I've added a cite as requested. I am aware from a number of websites that Argentina was seeking to use the F-86 in a ground attack role but I am struggling to find a reliable cite for it. I'm also struggling for reliable cites for the torpedo equipped Pucara trials the FAA conducted. If you have an interest would be grateful for anything you turn up. Regards, WCMemail 20:29, 31 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your note; will check that citation later, as AFAIK F-86s were not put in service again (but I don't have a verifiable source for this either!). As for the torpedo trials with the Pucara, I do have a verifiable source, and will add citation later today. Regards, DPdH (talk) 00:57, 1 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Couldn't find where in this article the torpedo trials with Pucaras are mentioned? Anyway can provide at least 1 verifiable source. Regards, DPdH (talk) 07:46, 23 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ah sorry, should have explained. I knew it happened but it was removed from the article previously due to a lack of inline citation. Regards, WCMemail 21:18, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Any clue where that sentence or paragraph was located, or when was it deleted? Just went thru the last 3 months of "article history" and couldn't find it... Thanks! DPdH (talk) 09:34, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
No sorry, it is likely a lot older than that. I saw it removed but was topic banned at the time and couldn't comment. WCMemail 12:22, 25 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Operation Typhoon

edit

Hi, would you still be interested in working on operation Operation Typhoon? Christwelfwww (talk) 17:29, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

What's exactly the idea? DPdH (talk) 00:04, 28 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've rfecently created an article about the Battle of Rzhev in the summer of 1942 Battle of Rzhev, Summer 1942 I must admit it took a long time working on it. I see the battle of Moscow page is not right, there should be numerous sub articles becuase its a massive topic. I then saw your comments which I 100% agreed with, but to create a article about Typhoon is a bit daunting, so I was interested to see if there was any interest elsewhere for colaberation. I also have a family, a job other commitments that only allow me to work intermittently. My idea would be to split into subtopics. Please let me know if you are interested, maybe others might also help Christwelfwww (talk) 11:39, 28 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Image alignment

edit

Hello. FYI not all images need to be aligned all to the right, we can offset them left and right per WP:IMAGELOCATION. Kind regards. Anotherclown (talk) 23:49, 11 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for your commentary. As per same guidelines ...In most cases, images should be right justified on pages, which is the default placement... hence the realignment I did was correct, and there was no reason to revert it. Regards, DPdH (talk) 02:10, 12 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Yet if the guidelines also say left and right is also acceptable (i.e how it was first) then that means the original layout was also correct doesn't it? Hence there was no reason for you to make any of your edits or reverts either (by your logic). Its obvious that policy says either is correct and usually in those cases the original style adopted is the one that should be applied (i.e. left and right alignment). This is completely pointless though and I'm not interested in getting into a petty edit war with you, so have it your way. Anotherclown (talk) 05:45, 12 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Left is acceptable as an exception, an I don't see here reason for such exception; hence my minor change. We seem to understand the guidelines differently, an that may happen sometimes. Too much time already spent in this petty point, thanks for your commentaries anyway; I'm never interested in edit wars and try to act in a civil manner. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. See also section are discouraged by WP:Ships in general. More specifically, one of the lists that you added a link for was already in the navbox at the bottom of the article. The dimensions in this article are grossly wrong and impossible. 11 seconds of review was not long enough. 7&6=thirteen () 19:31, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Both dimensions were ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, except that had a "decimal comma" as used in Spanish instead of a "decimal point"; sorry for overlooking that. As for the "record" time of its review, is not something that I could manage (and surprised me too), so please talk to the reviewer. Regards, DPdH (talk) 23:53, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Tripod British versus American English spelling changes

edit

In a recent edit to the page Tripod, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to India, use Indian English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. NotaBene 鹰百利 Talk 17:16, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for that, as a non-native English speaker I am not usually aware of subtle differences between versions of English; in this case, I just fixed spelling errors shown by my computer. I am aware of what the MoS recommends in this aspect, and consciously follow it as with any other Wikipedia policy; regardless, I can still make mistakes as my English is probably a mix of variants. I suggest that the article is tagged indicating the English version it is written in, to help prevent this kind of mistakes. Regards, DPdH (talk) 19:49, 13 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I tagged the article accordingly. You probably have your computer set for British spelling, which will mark any non-British spelling as incorrect. NotaBene 鹰百利 Talk 05:19, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 00:31, 27 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

edit

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Help needed with submarine class template

edit

Dear wikiproject colleagues, I've recently created a navigation template for the "Santa Fe-class submarines" of the Argentine Navy, and need help to fix 2 problems in it:

  • The template name must have the disambiguation (1931) as there were 3 classes named similarly; however the template syntax doesn't seem to support this (or I can't work it out). Need to fix soon, otherwise someone may create again the class-article but without disambiguating as needed.
  • The template can be searched for and visualized, however the code can't be edited or viewed as the V T E commands are "red links".

I modeled existing templates, but obviously missed something... Will appreciate help and guidance to fix this ASAP. Thanks and Happy 2017, DPdH (talk) 09:48, 3 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

@DPdH: I think the problem was the server cache, which is fairness isn't something people usually think of (I think of it only due to csd-related work), anyway it seems to be in working order now. TomStar81 (Talk) 11:51, 3 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

March Madness 2017

edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Lord Eldon (1801 ship)

edit

Dear DPdH, I must say I am mystified by your classifying this ship article as "Start" rather than "B". (Note: I don't care how you classify MilHist articles.) I have had great difficulty finding photographs from before photography was invented. Some line drawings do exist, but almost exclusively of military vessels, and even then rarely for small vessels. (I have checked the NMM so I am pretty sure of this.) Similarly, paintings are rare, absent a dramatic disaster, or a chance painting of warships and large vessels. Your application of the criteria mean that almost no article on an age of sail vessel, no matter how long or well researched, could ever go beyond Start class. What really irks me is that the "B" class criteria for ship articles read for B5: "It contains appropriate supporting materials, such as an infobox, images, or diagrams." (Emphasis added.) The key word though is "OR", which is not "AND". It is very discouraging to spend hours on an article scanning through Lloyd's Register, the Register of Shipping, Lloyd's List, lists of vessels from the period, etc., to create a relatively long article, one that is highly referenced, only to have some one drive by and declare it a "Start", in defiance of the classification criteria. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 17:09, 9 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Ha! I came over here for the same reason. As you say, an infobox fulfills the B5 criteria. In fact, there is no requirement that any WP article must contain a photo; even an FA class. Brad (talk) 02:31, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback; will respond once I review criteria again. Too busy now in real life, please give me time. Also, can we discuss at the article's talk page please? So has more visibility. Thanks, DPdH (talk) 12:04, 10 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for addressing my feedback, IMHO only an appropriate infobox is missing. Reassessed against B-class criteria, "Aviation" rates "C" while "MilHist" rates "start", if no infobox is adequate should be "B" in both. Regards, DPdH (talk) 13:07, 12 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Himmelstürmer Flightpack

edit

Just responding to your query about the above. This is an interesting article. Initially I put this up, and then it was raised as a hoax. I wasn't sure if in fact it was or not. In the meantime, the AFD was removed by someone else. Doing a bit of research, there seems to be some evidence to it, and some references to the concept in German language books (which I can't read). As far as I gather, all the references are real published items (though they may not be in google, but I gather a more concerted effort in Library cats would bring them up). Would be good to have someone who can read German look at the German language references and see what they say. Either way they'll find more interested stuff about it, or find it's never actually existed and it can come off, so good to have it reviewed, cheers. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest

edit

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In November The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent at Missing articles. Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:47, 5 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

edit

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. edit

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Great article, thanks. To have a standard format across aviation articles you might like to use Template:WPAVIATION creator which takes all the drudge out of article writing and leaves the article in a format which is unlikely to be challenged / editted.--Petebutt (talk) 15:03, 29 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Spanish help

DPdH, could you look at this edit? (My Spanish is very limited, but I was able to use Google Translate to translate the edit summary.) The user is changing the number of aircraft built on personal knowledge without citing reliable sources for the number. If you could talk with this user in Spanish and explain the need for a reliable source, I would appreciate it very much. Muchas gracias. - BilCat (talk) 23:01, 21 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

It's possible that the user is adding the total number of A-4s that Argentina has operated, though it seems unlikely to be an exact number like 200. - BilCat (talk) 23:27, 21 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

That number should be less than 150 for both Air Force (A4AR, A4C, A4P) and Naval Aviation (A4Q). Can get that supported by verifiable sources, with a bit of time. Cheers, DPdH (talk) 09:44, 23 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Imperial Guard (Napoleon I), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Ordnance (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Request for review

edit

Hey there, DPdH,

I am contacting you out of the blue in hopes of being able to mooch a couple of minutes of your time. Please hear me out!

Here in Germany, we have quite a bunch of military schools of thought and theorists to pick from. One of them is Carl von Clausewitz. His heritage is cared for at German universities, e.g. by professor Lennart Souchon. One of his scholars, a serving officer of the German forces, is currently touring the US, discussing strategy with US military personnel. He gets asked quite often for reference to Clausewitz, as well as Souchon. First place to go then is Wikipedia, which does help in the first, but not in the second case.

So, I set about translating the German WP article and placing it in the English WP. Unfortunately, this article got declined for a lack of citations in the first run. I'll take the blame for that. However, it is fixed now, and waiting for a second review - since more than 40 days!

Since the page of the "WikiProject Military history/Military science, technology, and theory task force" states that you are used to reviewing articles, I am hereby applying for your help in getting this new article approved. Not only is there a specific demand for an English text, but the described person has also been in exchange with European and US military since the seventies.

I hope to find your support, or at least get hints on how to further improve the article.

Draft:Lennart Souchon

Thanks a million in advance! --MultiPolitikus (talk) 11:40, 27 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

The article has been approved of in the meantime. Have a good time! --MultiPolitikus (talk) 22:09, 10 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Armenia/Azerbaijan discretionary sanctions

edit

This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.

You have shown interest in Armenia, Azerbaijan, or related conflicts. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.

For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

Proposed deletion of Mis Ladrillos

edit

The article Mis Ladrillos has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability_(organizations_and_companies)#Products_and_services requirement. WP:BEFORE did not reveal any significant coverage on Gnews, Gbooks or Gscholar. Given the near total lack of references (outside of a single external link), and the fact that the interwiki'd Spanish article is no better, there is no content to merge and anyway there is no valid merge/redirect target I see. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page here in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back through WP:ECHO or by leaving a note at User talk:Piotrus. Thank you.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Redundant articles

edit

Hola, I just found 2 articles that appear to be about the same topic. See Army Aviation Command (Argentina) and Argentine Army Aviation. Thoughts? Gracias. BilCat (talk) 17:20, 3 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hola, sorry just saw this. The article "Army Aviation Command (Argentina)" is newer and created probably without checking that the older "Argentine Army Aviation" article existed and covered the topic. Whatever useful content should be merged into "Argentine Army Aviation", and the newer can remain as a redirect to the older. Regards, DPdH (talk) 22:48, 19 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
That sounds good to me. BilCat (talk) 06:39, 20 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Mack NR

edit

Hi, I'm sorry, just writing to let you know the B&W IWM pic "Mack NR-4 transporting a camouflaged Valentine tank Mk III Valentine tank" in your Mack NR article is miscaptioned.

The truck is in fact a White Ruxtall 922. Mack had a very similar model used as tank transporter, the EXBX (shown in the wonderful Vanderveen book, too), but also quite different to the NR-4.

Hope it helps a bit!

Best regards!

Camouflage Measure applied to USN Asiatic Fleet Ships in Feb 1942

edit

DPdH, Your article on USN ship camouflage measures is very interesting. I am modeling flush-deck destroyers that served in the US Asiatic fleet in early 1942 (USS Pope, USS Peary, USS Stewart, etc). Do you have any specific info as to what measure they were actually painted in? From your article I gather that they should have been painted the "new" dark gray. Might they have still been painted in Standard Gray? Waynemc65 (talk) 21:50, 8 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Discussion about correct name of ATGM system "Skif"

edit

Dear DPdH,

if you have the time, I'd appreciate your insight (and possible action) on this article: https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Skif_(anti-tank_guided_missile)

The issue that has arisen is in regards to the way the name should be spelled on Wikipedia: "Stugna-P" or "Stuhna-P" There's a short discussion on the talk page that, in my opinion, provides strong reasons why the system should be spelled "Stugna-P" (as it was before in that article) instead of the currently used "Stuhna-P": https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Talk:Skif_(anti-tank_guided_missile)

I thought about correcting all occurences of "Stuhna-P" to "Stugna-P" in the article myself, but I hesitate to execute such a significant unilateral revision and would like to hear your opinion before I decide to take any further steps. Many thanks in advance. MiBerG (talk) 11:10, 25 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of CITEFA AS-25K

edit

The article CITEFA AS-25K has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

I did a google search and it does not seem notable

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Vultee

edit

Hi, I appreciate your information on the Vultee page. However, I believe it used to have different information, including the management staff. Is there anyway that it can be added back? My great grandfather worked there as VP in the late 30s, early 40s and I would really appreciate it if he could be mentioned on there again. There are a few articles on Newspaper.com about him, but the one I attached is just one I found quickly. Kraftykimw (talk) 21:02, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apologies, haven't worked on the Vultee wikiarticle for a decade, not sure what specifically you refer to. If you have verifiable sources and want to improve the article, please do so. Regards,DPdH (talk) 08:21, 17 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
