Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators/September 2014

Overview

edit

This election is to appoint the project coordinator team for one year, from 29 September 2014 to 28 September 2015. Coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project. All of the coordinators, and especially the lead coordinator (or lead coordinators), serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues and focus on specific areas requiring special attention. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers.

Responsibilities

edit

From Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Coordinators:

The primary responsibility of the project coordinators is the maintenance and housekeeping work involved in keeping the project and its internal processes running smoothly; this includes a variety of tasks, such as keeping the announcement and open task lists updated, overseeing the assessment and review processes, managing the proposal and creation of task forces, and so forth. There is fairly little involved that couldn't theoretically be done by any other editor, of course—in only a few places have the coordinators been explicitly written into a process—but, since experience suggests that people tend to assume that someone else is doing whatever needs to be done, it has proven beneficial to formally delegate responsibility for this administrative work to a specified group.

The coordinators also have several additional roles. They serve as the project's designated points of contact, and are explicitly listed as people to whom questions can be directed in a variety of places around the project. In addition, they have (highly informal) roles in leading the drafting of project guidelines, overseeing the implementation of project decisions on issues like category schemes and template use, and helping to resolve disputes and keep discussions from becoming heated and unproductive.

Practical information on coordinating may be found here and here.

The current coordinators are:

For anyone who has been active in this WikiProject over the last 5 years or so, will know who I am. I was fortunate enough to be a Coordinator between 2011 and 2012. Since then, I’ve tried my best to cleanup articles, and talkpage templates. Adamdaley (talk) 01:25, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Auntieruth55

edit

Auntieruth55 (talk · contribs)

I've learned a lot from the participants and the coordinators. I've not been as involved as I'd had liked for the past couple of years, due to finishing my dissertation. That is finally done, although I'm still working on paring it down to book length. However, now that I have the time, I'd like to get back to the wikiprojects I enjoy, and I'd like to give something back.
  • Ooops! sorry to throw a wrench in the machinery, or a spanner in the works. I was away from my desk most of my weekend and did not actually decide to go for this coordinator business until mid-afternoon on Sunday. I figured there would be some notice of a time cut-off but since I didn't see one, I figured you'd erase me if there was a problem. Sorry to cause confusion and I won't be hurt or sulky if "yinz" (that's a Pittsburghism for you all) decide to keep the # to 12. auntieruth (talk) 19:32, 15 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't worry about it, I spotted the the error, reported it, and the current consensus is that your late nomination won't be an issue. Its AGF in action, and your nomination won't be disqualified. Also, "yinz" can tell the Steelers to shape up because this Pennsylvanian ain't too happy with the team's performance so far this year :) 19:38, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Professional (and professorial) level English. Fierce research skills and editing skills. Patience, perseverance, and kindness.

Dank

edit

Dank (talk · contribs)

Hi, I'm Dan, and I've had the privilege of being a Milhist coordinator for many years. For most of that time, I've been copyediting almost all of the Milhist Featured and A-class articles, and I'm working on copyediting software that hopefully will let me help with more articles. You can find out about my opinions and activities on Wikipedia over the last seven years by wandering around my userspace, or searching for my username at our main talk page and archives or the coordinators' talk page and archives.

    • Copyediting, participating in discussions, and caring about the project.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Dedication, I guess ... I've devoted a lot of time to this project, and I'll keep doing that. Lately, I've been covering more articles and different types of articles than I used to, and narrowing my focus. - Dank (push to talk) 13:55, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dumelow

edit

Dumelow (talk · contribs)

I was asked to nominate myself by Harry a couple of weeks ago and have hummed and hawed over it since then. I have been around for a while now (8 years and counting) and have been an admin for five years but my editing tends to come in bursts of activity whenever I get time. The nature of my work means I occasionally go through periods when I can devote little time to Wikipedia so I was unsure whether it was fair to nominate myself. However I am a big fan of the project and would love to be able to help out where I can - Dumelow (talk) 07:52, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • All four of my FAs have had some milhist connection (as do all 23 of my GAs) and I have always received a great deal of help from the project in preparing them for FAC. I am particularly proud of my latest, Charles Inglis (engineer), as that was my first biography FA and the subject shares my field of work. I also enjoy writing shorter articles on subjects that interest me. Whilst most of my milhist contributions have been about British military history I have recently developed an interest in French colonial history following my article on the Zaian War and I am proud to have helped expand the encyclopaedia's coverage in this area - Dumelow (talk) 07:52, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hawkeye7

edit

Hawkeye7 (talk · contribs)

I go by the name of Hawkeye7. The names comes not from the character in M*A*S*H as is often assumed, but from a comic book character I was fond of as a boy. Like Harry Mitchell, I was first elected three years ago with tranche XI. Like Harry, I won't be offended if you ask me to make way for new blood. At last count I had contributed to 38 featured articles, 73 A-class articles and 172 good articles, most of them on Military History. At the moment I am still finishing off a series of articles on the Manhattan Project. I have a masters degree and a doctorate in Military History, and have contributed to a number of books. I was awarded a Golden Wiki by the Military History WikiProject for Military historian of the year in 2012.

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I'm not an admin, so I cannot perform any admin tasks. I am first and foremost a content creator. I am pretty knowledgeable about 20th century Military History, my theses being on the two world wars, and will help when I can. I frequently review articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Requests and at DYK, where I also assemble prep areas. I wrote a Bot (MilHistBot) to perform routine coordinator tasks.

HJ Mitchell

HJ Mitchell (talk · contribs)

Hi, I'm Harry! I've been a coordinator for three years (!) now. I haven't been a very active coord this last year, and I was going to take a year out, but several of our best and brightest are stepping down this year. A healthy turnover is a good thing and helps us bring in new blood, which keeps the coord team vibrant and keeps us in touch with the project we serve; equally though, we need to retain institutional memory and newer coords need somebody to turn to for advice, and that is why I'm putting my hat in the ring for a fourth term.

As mentioned, I've been a little derelict in my duty recently; I had health issues from the end of last year, thankfully resolved by an operation in June, and upon my recovery became heavily involved in organising Wikimania. Before that, and in my previous terms, I made a point of keeping a close eye on the coords' talk page and the project talk page, weighing in where I've had something to contribute and trying to make newer contributors feel welcome and part of the project. I feel I can still contribute as a coord, but if you can find 12 other candidates who would represent the project well and reflect a broad cross-section of our community and diverse experience across Wikipedia, I won't be offended if you ask me to make way. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I'm proud of my work as a coordinator over the last three years, helping with the smooth running of the project, contributing to and facilitating discussions, contributing reviews at A-class and FAC, and closing A-class reviews. I consider myself a writer first and foremost; I've written half a dozen featured articles (all of them MilHist-related, all with the support of this project) and my seventh is currently going through FAC. I've also written dozens other articles, some of which have attained A-class or GA status or have been on DYK, mainly focusing on British military history, but I'll write about anything that piques my interest.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have three years' experience as a coord, so I'm familiar with the workings of the project, and I've been an admin for four and a half years. In that time, I've dabbled in most areas of Wikipedia, so I can offer advice on a wide variety of subjects, processes, and policies.
  • What do you think about the current state of British Military history on Wikipedia? Hawkeye7 (talk) 09:42, 12 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • The first half of the 20th century, particularly the Second World War, is pretty well covered; not 'finished' by any means, but better covered than other areas. We're sorely lacking on some of the older stuff from before the era of petty squabbles with European neighbours to the beginning of the path that led to the First World War, perhaps because most of the sources are older, relatively obscure books. The latter half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st is also sparse; the issue with history from the Internet era is sorting the wheat from the chaff—the Internet gives every armchair general a voice! Ian Rose

edit

Ian Rose (talk · contribs)

I've been editing for at least eight years now, and a project coordinator for five. I've always considered myself first and foremost a content editor, and I think I recently notched up a half century of Featured Articles. My specialty is Australian military aviation, mainly biographies and unit histories, but I like to think I can contribute intelligently to articles or discussion on other subjects as well. Along with my MilHist coord duties, I'm active in the monthly article writing contest, edit The Bugle newsletter with Nick-D, and am one of WP's FAC coordinators.

Comments and questions for Ian Rose

edit
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I'm pleased to have edited a good many quality MilHist articles, and particularly proud to have collaborated with different editors on several of them. Having written a few pieces outside my immediate comfort zone, such as a trio of Royal Australian Navy biographies, is another source of pride. Finally, I think that reviewing articles is almost as important as writing them in the first place, so it feels good to consistently be among the top ten reviewers of GA, A-Class and FA articles.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • Experience in the role and also in a position of responsibility outside the project, i.e. as a FAC coord, as well as (I hope!) enthusiasm, good humour, and a level head.

MisterBee1966 (talk · contribs)

I had the honor to have been elected twice already. I enjoyed this experience very much and would be happy to again help and support our project. Earlier this year I had already considered retiring from Wiki but I am still not quite content with what I have done here. I believe to have a good understanding of what the task requires, I believe that I am good at resolving conflicts.

Comments and questions for MisterBee1966

edit
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I strongly believe in the concept of Wiki and the ideas of information evolution. I especially enjoy the collaborative approach here, bringing information and articles forward. I enjoy working with other editors on articles. I think this approach has made some of the articles we have worked on better.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I guess seven years of Wiki editing has taught me many things. I don't want to elevate one single aspect over another. As a coordinator you may have to face many challenges, ranging from personal conflicts, POV editing to technical issues. I believe I can support our project in all these areas.

Molestash (talk · contribs)

I have been around MILHIST for around 3 years now and Wikipedia since Halloween of 2010. This would be my first effort running as a coordinator of the project. I would definitely consider myself a WikiGnome with the vast majority of my edits going to the assessment of articles and other general "monotonous" tasks. I have written two good articles and helped get many pistol articles properly sourced with multiple articles on my radar for future improvement once more reliable sources become available. --Molestash (talk) 23:28, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions for Nikkimaria

edit
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • If Day remains my favourite article among all that I've written - it's a quirky bit of Canadian military history. I'm also proud of my work in reviewing MilHist articles to ensure that they exemplify our project's highest standards.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I have extensive experience in the various review processes and am confident that I can continue to contribute to this area of the project. I also have experience working with newer editors, helping them become attuned to the intricacies of editing Wikipedia.
  • You recently resigned your administrator tools during a dispute. What have you learned from this experience, and how will you apply what you have learned if you are elected as a coordinator?
    • Bit late in the game to discuss this extensively, but broadly, I learned quite a bit about the project and how I enjoy it best. In that vein, I look forward to continued collaborations with my fellow MilHist members. This is a great WikiProject for just that sort of thing.
  • Will you, going forward, agree to take advice from more experienced and more senior editors in other WikiProjects, such as User:Montanabw? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Demiurge1000 (talkcontribs)
    • I will consider good-faith advice from any editor, no matter their level of experience or seniority.

Peacemaker67 (talk · contribs)

I've been a coordinator for a year now, and a member of the project (and editing WP) for nearly three years (about 10,000 edits a year, about 45% of that in article space). I work mainly on articles in the WWII in the Yugoslavia area (known as Operation Bora), but I also help maintain the MILHIST Announcement Template (especially GANs), welcome new members, try to help with questions on the MH talk page, and do some reviewing, develop ideas for the project (eg the A-Class Cross series), and verify the monthly contest and tally quarterly reviewing. I also try to keep the task force backlog under control. So pretty much normal coordinator stuff, nothing particularly striking. Peacemaker67 (send... over) 11:13, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • The FAs and A-Class articles I've developed as a collaboration with other editors.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I'm no guru on bots, scripts and some of the more techo stuff (thankfully we still have Kirill), but I am starting to develop a wider range of knowledge and skills across the project. And I have a bit of free time...
  • WWII in the Yugoslavia area is complex and controversial topic. What attracts you to it? Hawkeye7 (talk) 11:55, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yeah, it sure is. I personally served in the former Yugoslavia with the UN and NATO during the Bosnian War, and in common with any country undergoing a civil war, it was a very nasty place to be. My interest centres around better understanding what I saw and experienced in the 90's in the context of the history of Yugoslavia fifty years earlier. There are strong links between the two, in terms of both mythology and reality. It's strange, because as a retired Australian soldier, I have a lot of interest in Australian military history, but I can never drag myself away from Yugoslav topics for long. • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • I was the MilHist Historian of the Year in 2010 and I was a primary contributor to the largest Featured Topic in all of Wiki. And while I may have the most Good Articles in Wiki, I have reviewed just about as many and am in the top 10 for the number of articles reviewed.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I've done this job before and it hasn't changed much in the interim. I'm not an admin, but I'm extensively involved in the various review processes. Everything from ordinary assessments of quality to Featured Article reviews.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 15:04, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comments and questions for TomStar81

edit
  • What have been the achievements of which you are most proud within the Military history WikiProject?
    • Hard to name any one particular achievement, since over the last ten or so years I've dabbled in all of it to some greater or lesser extent. I suppose if I had to name a few things I've been proud of the list would include founding Operation Majestic Titan, suggesting up our two-tiered award system for the chevron and chevron with oak leaves award, and accumulating a number of GA, A, and FA-class articles for the project.
  • What skills/qualities can you contribute as a coordinator?
    • I'm usually an idea person, so I can be found suggesting ideas or solutions to problems that come up in a given semester. I've been active at various points in my coordinator life cycle in our assessment, review, and article development processes, so on the whole I'd consider myself well adjusted to hit the ground round in any given direction the project needs its coordinators for.

Yeah, I had good chuckle thinking about that the other day. At this point it seems that I am for all intents and purposes our unofficial 3rd Coordinator Emeritus :) At the rate I'm going I may end up in that community if only for the purpose of opening up a slot for new blood! (LOL! :)
