Administrators' newsletter – October 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2022).
- Following an RfC, consensus was found that if the rationale for a block depends on information that is not available to all administrators, that information should be sent to the Arbitration Committee, a checkuser or an oversighter for action (as applicable, per ArbCom's recent updated guidance) instead of the administrator making the block.
- Following an RfC, consensus has been found that, in the context of politics and science, the reliability of FoxNews.com is unclear and that additional considerations apply to its use.
- Community comment on the revised Universal Code of Conduct enforcement guidelines is requested until 8 October.
- The Articles for creation helper script now automatically recognises administrator accounts which means your name does not need to be listed at WP:AFCP to help out. If you wish to help out at AFC, enable AFCH by navigating to Preferences → Gadgets and checking the "Yet Another AfC Helper Script" box.
- Remedy 8.1 of the Muhammad images case will be rescinded 1 November following a motion.
- A modification to the deletion RfC remedy in the Conduct in deletion-related editing case has been made to reaffirm the independence of the RfC and allow the moderators to split the RfC in two.
- The second phase of the 2021-22 Discretionary Sanctions Review closes 3 October.
- An administrator's account was recently compromised. Administrators are encouraged to check that their passwords are secure, and reminded that ArbCom reserves the right to not restore adminship in cases of poor account security. You can also use two-factor authentication (2FA) to provide an extra level of security.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections open 2 October and close 8 October.
- You are invited to comment on candidates in the 2022 CUOS appointments process.
- An RfC is open to discuss whether to make Vector 2022 the default skin on desktop.
- Tech tip: You can do a fuzzy search of all deleted page titles at Special:Undelete.

Hi, can you block 27.5.12.220 (talk · contribs · WHOIS)? It's clearly the same one as 27.5.9.213 (talk · contribs · WHOIS), which you already blocked. As it was previously, all their edits are blatant vandalism. Urbanoc (talk) 10:09, 6 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello old page del from 2012
Godlike productions I would love to see the old deleted pages please? I'd really like to re-make the page anyhow, as they do have better references by now, but again, would love to see what was deleted way back then as the website has been online since the 90's and the original owner name Elaine is someone I would love to mention in article. ThanksTeeVeeed (talk) 23:16, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- There is no page with that name. A quick search did not find it. You have to give more precise directions to look for. -- Alexf(talk) 00:41, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

(a link to their website) - Certains words are banned; be carefull". That is all there was (typos and all), and it was correctly deleted as A3-No meaningful content. -- Alexf(talk) 16:44, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Significant omissions from a Wiki page
Dear Alexf: I am 80 years old, and each year I have checked the Wiki page written about me out of curiosity. And each year I am upset by the sins of omission on that page, including numerous honors and awards (veriable), not the least of which is my involvement in founding the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985, the latter having been amply documented in the media. I understand now your Conflict of Interest policy to a certain extent, and feel I am powerless to to correct the record. What do you advise? Is there nothing I can do? Henry Abraham MD (talk) 14:49, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Henry Abraham MD: I must congratulate you on a life serving science and the public. I am not the best person to ask, but I would say you could always write about omissions/errors in the article's Talk Page, and as long as they are properly documented with verifiable references, you can request a change be made. The best place to ask for guidance is at the Tea House where there are people everyday answering all type of Wikipedia-related questions like this. -- Alexf(talk) 15:34, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Editing my comment
Did you mean to edit my comment on my talk page? [https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Theroadislong&diff=1116648316&oldid=1116634090&diffmode=source] Theroadislong (talk) 17:05, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Theroadislong: No. That was an error while having his Talk page also opened in another tab. Sorry. Removed. -- Alexf(talk) 17:08, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- No worries I suspect the user will shortly be blocked. Theroadislong (talk) 17:10, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Theroadislong: Not yet. I have already declined the blocking request. It is not yet a problem of self-advertising. Just a misguided user, talking about himself in his user page. Seems he was swindled out of money by someone offering to write about him. Was warned for hijacking an article. Was pointed to the Tea House for questions he may have. Watchlisted. Let's see how it goes. -- Alexf(talk) 17:19, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Help with User "Bazzascott1234"
Hello,
Would you be able to please help with this user User talk:Bazzascott1234. I am asking you because you have dealt with this person previously.
This user has been repeatedly adding unsourced and nonsensical claims to Bongani Khumalo, and has failed to provide any citations, for example here https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Bongani_Khumalo&diff=1120194069&oldid=1120194012. It appears he is using the page for some kind of promotion of a very minor youtube channel.
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mr Stroganoff (talk) 12:55, 9 November 2022 (UTC)
Block of Jossapjsfpaskfjlqoifwa
Hello Alex! I'm a bit confused as to why you blocked this user. They made 1 edit (which they were warned for) and then made no other edits. They also don't have any abuse filter logs. I'm always told blocks are meant to be preventative and not punitive so I'm a bit perplexed as to why you blocked a user who made 1 edit. I'm not asking you to unblock them since I have no problems with the block itself, just want to understand why you blocked. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:10, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Blaze Wolf: A good question. Besides the username, their edit started with the word "poop". Not indicative of someone here to help. New users either start helping, or ask questions on how to help. Not this one. -- Alexf(talk) 18:05, 15 November 2022 (UTC)

Hey, I have a suspicion that this account may be a sockpuppet of Agustin Sepulveda Venegas 2004 Fan based on LollipopFanBot's identical request to this account at Wikipedia:Requests for undeletion. Just thought I'd let you know, as you are the blocking admin. LilianaUwU (talk / contribs) 13:42, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
- Ok. I have no basis to confirm that. They are blocked. Should they be back, or request an unblock/change of name, you may want to keep an eye on it, and then we can ask a CheckUser to look into it. At this point there is nothing more that needs to be done. -- Alexf(talk) 13:46, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
WP:UAA decline - Lil AL-K In Da hood
Hi Alexf, I find this odd, as the page was solely about a band/musical artist (promoting Spotify links and such). This led me to think that it would be shared by that band for a promotional purpose. What are your thoughts on this? Silikonz (alt)💬 00:51, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
- I saw one post. I warned them for self-advertising. Let's see what they do next. Is it blatant enough to block? Maybe. I want to see one more edit. Another admin may disagree. They should feel fee to do so. -- Alexf(talk) 00:54, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2022).
- Consensus has been found in an RfC to automatically place RfAs on hold after one week.
- The article creation at scale RfC has been closed.
- An RfC on the banners for the December 2022 fundraising campaign has been closed.
- A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. (T319449)
- Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 12, 2022 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.
- The proposed decision for the 2021-22 review of the discretionary sanctions system is open.
- The arbitration case Reversal and reinstatement of Athaenara's block has been closed.
- The arbitration case Stephen has been opened and the proposed decision is expected 1 December 2022.
- A motion has modified the procedures for contacting an admin facing Level 2 desysop.
- Tech tip: A single IPv6 connection usually has access to a "subnet" of 18 quintillion IPs. Add
/64
to the end of an IP in Special:Contributions to see all of a subnet's edits, and consider blocking the whole subnet rather than an IP that may change within a minute.
Hello
Hello, I'm new to this. I'm researcher & music fan Don Salter, formerly Breaking Point 27. I changed username to avoid conflict of interest. In error, I quoted Breaking Point Drummer Aaron "Zeke" Dauner without citation. I am not him. I was sharing actual Breaking Point YouTube link as they broke up in 2007 have no website & sell nothing on YouTube. This is not vandalism or advertising. It's the most factual info on the band as it's captioned video using approved copyrights/ music. The video captions also align with Windup Records band data. 2601:840:8400:4CD0:899B:6B0B:8B84:79C9 (talk) 04:21, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

This user has put in an unblock request that actually hits all the bases. What do you as the blocking admin think? Daniel Case (talk) 07:12, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Daniel Case: As long as the user plays by the rules in the future, and does the proper paid disclosures, I have no issues with unblocking. -- Alexf(talk) 09:17, 3 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi Alexf, due to their strange insistence and this diff, I think we may be dealing with a good-faith case of original research and a severe conflict of interest. For this reason, I'd like to convert Jside1846's block to one that isn't for vandalism but rather meant to enforce the use of one account, and I'd like to modify the protection reason to "persistent addition of unsourced content". Would that be okay? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 19:42, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
- @ToBeFree: Ok. Go ahead. -- Alexf(talk) 21:36, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Your views on reliable sources
Hello, I need some third opinion regarding a reliable source. I tried posting my request in the RS noticeboard, but nothing great came out of it. To be honest, we never reached a consensus. So I wanted to ask if you're any expert of sort that can help me guide and point out why this can't be used as a RS?
I have a link to the archived discussion if you're interested. Thanks ✠ Rejoy2003 ✠ (contact) 07:28, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for the block of 2001:16A2:E502:4948:E187:417A:F454:25E3, but they are on a /64 range and since you blocked them, they have already jumped over to multiple new IPs in that range and resumed their disruptive editing. Would you extend the block to the /64?

Are we required to cite sources in stand-alone lists?
I saw this editnotice that you left on a list article that I was editing: it states that any entries without references "will be removed without warning." But most of the entries in the list do not include inline citations: does this mean that they must be removed? Jarble (talk) 23:59, 24 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Jarble: No. It says "Every entry in this list must have an article written in the English Wikipedia". This basically means no red links or entries with no articles. The sources should be in the article. If there is an article in en.WP then it is fine to add, as long as the article supports inclusion in that particular list. --Alexf(talk) 00:43, 25 December 2022 (UTC)

- CVN is Countervandalism Network, a person being blacklisted on CVN has an Exclamation mark close to their edit logs. To activate this feature, try mw.loader.load('https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Krinkle/Scripts/Countervandalism.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript'); Lemonaka (talk) 12:42, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
- Ok. I seldom go to Wikimedia (no time), so I did not know. It might be (my guess) because I usually use a VPN when online and Wiki software does not like those IPs so they are blocked. In en.WP as I *always* come logged in with my account, that supersedes, so there is no complaint. If I ever try to come here as an anonymous IP Address, unless it is my real IP, it will be blocked. Just my guess. -- Alexf(talk) 13:07, 30 December 2022 (UTC)
