The "end Eocene" event.

I began editing to sort out the Isle of Wight and played with the Categories until I went crazy. I tried to copy the layout of Cornwall which looked very organized. None of the other counties of England are that well organized.

Then i wanted to write some pages. I found this very hard to put something together which would be both encyclopedic and relevant.

Then I significantly rewrote Brighstone Forest and modified Parkhurst Forest. This of course had to go into a new category. (Category:Forests_and_woodlands_on_the_Isle_of_Wight)

I finally managed to create my own new page, a page called Newtown River

Being a bit! obsessed with the IOW I added an IOW section into List of bays of the British Isles, List of places on the British coastline, List of rivers of England

Following my work on IOW forests I graduated to doing tables - pretty tricky! I created a new page called List of Forestry Commission land on the Isle of Wight

I have now started a large piece of work with more tables called List of National Trust land in England

Finished Thames and solent region by extensive research of the National trust website, the information is all over the place! Then i poored over the 1:25000 scale o/s map of the IOW and found a whole load of land manged by the NT but not mentioned on their website, they are so modest! This i have added to the table, areas are missing, how do you calculate them off a map?

Definitely finding that my interests lie in the nature/conservation side of things. There are so many artices that have not been written, particularly to complete the links on List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest on the Isle of Wight and also i'm thinking lots of articles need to be updated to indicate that they are in the Isle of Wight AONB

Just updated the Western Yar entry. Hope its OK

The work continues....

IOW Chines

edit

A funny thing happened on the Chine page. I came up with the idea of adding a section on the IOW chines, by creating a list. It was incomplete and within a few days someone had completed the list and started creating chine pages. Amazing that I could have this effect. I have now set out on "project chine" which is to photo all the IOW chines and write up any that are needed.

Nice work! By coincidence, I briefly got an Athens login in August, and was able to find a systematic list in academic journals. I'm going to the IOW later this year (my dad's from Newport and still lives there), but it's a visiting-family kind of trip and I don't think I'll be too popular if I start sneaking off chine-hunting. The Clare Balding Incident

edit

In an episode broadcast on 15/12/07, the defending the indefensible round between Clare Balding and Will Buckley was too close to call. He deffered the decision to his producer but in an effort to sway the decision Clare apparently exposed her breasts to Colin Murray. In customary Murray style, he awarded the win to Will Buckley. He signed off by saying, "..it will take me 7 days to get over that!". Clare replied by saying, "It was specially for the Webcam."

Without the Hot Air

edit

Sustainable Energy – without the hot air is a book written by David Mackay, Professor of Natural Philosophy in the Department of Physics at the University of Cambridge. The book was published in December 2008 in the UK and released in May 2009 in the US. It is 380 pages long and is available in both hardback and paperback for £45 and 19.99 respectively. It is also published in html and freely downlaodable as pdf documents from a website.

The book is divided into 4 parts

Part I – Numbers, not adjectives The first part of this book discusses whether a country like the United Kingdom, famously well endowed with wind, wave, and tidal resources, could live on its own renewables. We often hear that Britain’s renewables are “huge.” But it’s not sufficient to know that a source of energy is “huge.” We need to know how it compares with another “huge,” namely our huge consumption. To make such comparisons, we need numbers, not adjectives.

Part II – Energy plans that add up The second part explores six strategies for eliminating the gap between consumption and renewable production identified in the first part, then sketches several energy plans for Britain, each of which adds up.

Part III – Technical chapters The third part of the book drills down to the physical foundations of energy consumption and energy production. Eight appendices show from first principles where the numbers in the first two parts come from. These appendices explain, for example, how cars can be made significantly more energy-efficient, and why planes cannot; and they explain how the power from wind farms, tide farms, and wave farms can all be calculated on the back of an envelope. It contains more formulas

Part IV – Useful data The final sixteen pages of the book contain further reference data and conversion factors, useful for applying the book’s ideas to other countries, and for translating to and from units used by other organizations.

Chapter 1

edit

Chapter 2

edit

Key forms of consumption

  • Transport - cars,planes
  • Heating/cooling
  • Lighting
  • IT and gadgets
  • Food
  • Manufacturing

Renewable Energy

  • Wind
  • Solar
  • Hydroelectric
  • Wave
  • Tide
  • Geothermal
  • Nuclear?

Figures basic unit of energy = kWh

basic unit of power consumption= kWh per day

basic unit of power generation= kWh per day per person

Light bulb 40W=1kWh/d Electric heater 1kW=24kWh/d UK electricity consumption=40Gw=16kWh/d per person

High grade energy= electricity/chemical Thermal energy is low grade energy, it is difficult to store and transport. The higher the temp the more useful the energy Converting energy from one source to another wastes energy

Chapter 3 Cars

edit

They use lots of energy

Energy use:- Average car driver (11000 miles) uses 40kWh/d. i.e. 14MWh per year. Petrol 10kWh/litre. Diesel 11kWh/litre

Efficiency:- 80kWh per 100 passenger kilometres (compare walking 3.6kWh per 100 miles)

Chapter 5 Planes

edit

They use unbeleivable amounts of energy

Energy use:- One trip to South Africa in a year uses 30kWh/d. i.e. 10MWh per year

Efficiency:- plane (jet or turboprop) 40kWh per 100 passenger kilometres(twice as efficient as a car) 2 short haul flights to Europe 6kWh/d: Frequent flyer 60kWh/d

Chapter 7 Heating/Cooling

edit
  • Bath 5kwh
  • Shower 1.4kwh
  • Kettle (20 mins per day) 1kwh/d
  • Electric Cooker (2 rings 30mins per say) 1.6kwh/d
  • Electric Oven (60 mins per day) 1.5kwh/d
  • Microwave(20 mins per day) 0.5kwh/d
  • Washing machine 1kw/h
  • Dishwasher 1.5kw/h

Total average water heating 12kWh/d

Total average air heating 24kWh/d

  • Fridge/freezer 0.5kwh/d
  • Air Con 0.6kwh/d

Total average cooling 1kWh/d

Grand Total average heating and cooling 37kWh/d

Chapter 9 Lighting

edit

Total average lighting 4kWh/d (Street lights 0.1kwh/d, traffic lights 0.005kwh/d, lights while driving 2% extra power)

Chapter 11 Gadgets

edit

"All the energy saved in switching off your charger for one day is used up in one second of car-driving.

The energy saved in switching off the charger for one year is equal to the energy in a single hot bath."

Up to 5kWh/d depending on number of gadgets. Beware of guzzlers, like printers, computer, TV, DVDs Electricity generation, more than half the energy goes up the chimney and 8% is lost in transmission. Burning Fossil fuels at home means that more of the energy goes into creating hot air.

Chapter 13 Food and Farming

edit

15kWh/d

Chapter 15 Stuff

edit

48kWh/d + 12kWh/d to transport it

Chapter 17 Public Services

edit

4kWh/d Defence

Chapter 4 Wind

edit

Onshore Windiest 10% of the country with windmills (delivering 2 W/m2), we would be able to generate 20kWh/d per person (29GW compared with current 3GW capacity (1GW useable assuming 30% efficient)

Chapter 6 Solar

edit
  • Solar thermal: using the sunshine for direct heating of buildings or water. 10 m2 of panels per person – and let’s assume these are 50%-efficient generates 13kWh/d.
  • Solar photovoltaic: generating electricity. Every person 10 m2 of expensive (20%-efficient) solar panels and cover all south-facing roofs would generate 5kWh/d and 5% of the UK covered with 10%-efficient panels generates 50kWh/d.
  • Solar biomass: using trees, bacteria, algae, corn, soy beans, or oilseed to make energy fuels, chemicals, or building materials. 75% of the country covered with 2%-efficient plants would generate 24kWh/d (with some loss in the process)
  • Food: the same as solar biomass, except we shovel the plants into humans or other animals.

Chapter 8 Hydroelectricity

edit

Exploiting 78000 km2 of highland would generate 1.5kWh/d per person. Currently 0.2kWh/d per person, so this would require a seven-fold increase in hydroelectric power.

Chapter 10 Offshore Wind

edit

Total shallow area 40000 km2, guess available fraction 1/3 gives 16kWh/d per person Total deep area 80000 km2, guess available fraction 1/3 gives 32kWh/d per person Requires huge engineering effort, uses vast amounts of steel and concrete and boats. Windmills do kill birds but cars and cats kill many many more.

Chapter 12 Wave

edit

Let’s assume that brilliant wave-machines are 50%-efficient at turning the incoming wave power into electricity, and that we are able to pack wave-machines along 500 km (half) of Atlantic-facing coastline. That would mean we could deliver 4kWh/d per person.

Chapter 14 Tidal

edit

Raw total available tidal power around whole of UK is 250GW. Equivalent to 100kWh/d each. Assume 5% efficiency then 5kWh/d. Tidal Stream Farms at pinch points around UK could generate 9kWh/d Barrages, Seven barrage to generate 0.8kWh/d Tidal Lagoons. By using two side by side can make a useful pumped storage facility. Two proposed off Blackpool and the Wash generating 1.5kWh/d. Total Tidal 11kWh/d Many benefits, predictable, times vary around UK, out of sight.

Chapter 16 Geothermal

edit

1kWh/d possible

Chapter 18 Can we live on renwables?

edit

Grand total consumption 195kWh/d per person Grand total generation from renewables 180kWh/d per person

Chapter 19 Every BIG Helps

edit

Small things wont help. Unplugging Mob phones won't fix the problem. Need to do BIG thinks. Reduce Demand by:- 1) Reduce Population 2) Change our lifestyle 3) Be more efficient Option 3) only real possibility

Simplify situation by focusing on the big picture, by ignoring industry, agriculture and embodied energy. That leaves 125kWh/d per person. Namely heating (40kWh/d), transport (40kWh/d), electricity (18kWh/d) (27kWh/d lost from conversion to electricity)

Chapter 20 More Efficient Transport

Climate change reporter and myth de-bunker Todate has made 11 Utube videos discussing climate change

1. Climate Change -- the scientific debate Basic introduction to greenhouse gas operation - effect of carbon cases Global dimming - by 1980s global warming prevelent Satellite temperature measurement in lower troposphere show cooling Visible signs of warming - ice melting in Greenland, glaciers melting, Antarctic ice shelf breaking off 1997 Kyoto 2005 Satellite temp problem solved agreement that world is warming - but is it man-made? 800 year CO2 lag - positive feedback - cold world warmed by small trigger which increases release of CO2 which warms world more ,and so on until all ice has gone, this proves that temperature and CO2 are linked. Triggers not known, consensus is that its caused by variation in earths orbit. In the past the temp change caused the CO2 conc to change, just this time its the other way around. Not variation in orbit so what is causing the recent warming Current positive feedback - methane in Siberia Overwelming majority of scientists accept role of man made CO2 in global warming

2. Climate Change -- the objections Water vapour less spectrum of absorbtion than CO2 Large degree of consensus for anthropogenic climate change Two areas of disagreement:- 1) Increased Output from sun - solar forcing - good correlation for last 250 years except for the recent period last (40yrs), recent research shows some increase but not enough to explain statistically significant rise in recent temp. 2) i) Global cloud cover - Cosmic rays remove cloud - depends on solar output again. Correlation breaks down after 1991 ii) Warmer tropical oceans, fewer cirrus clouds, more IR radiation can escape - Linzen IR Iris hypothesis - area of differences of opinion During 9/11 disruption when no planes, no contrails, daytime temp rose, but night time fell by equal amount - other research shows fewer clouds produces slight warming, Linzen used Indonesia, warmest oceans in the world, Effect is less over the whole tropics. Volcanos - not significant in global warming agreement.

3. - Climate Change -- Anatomy of a myth "Iceage on the way" Time magazine - We were in a cooling period, but it was coming to an end. Search of Scientific journals of the period discovered 7 global cooling, 44 global warning (1965-79). 6 times as many scientists were predicting global warmng global cooling agreed to be caused by pollution caused by particulates/aerosols which block sunlight. This would be overwelmed by CO2 global warning in the atmosphere end of high temperatures....leading into the next glacial age, in 20000 years (16000 current prediction) Urban myth, perpertrated by Senators, no consensus in 1970s, scientists knew climate was changing, didn't have good data.
