Rich F,

I notice that you edit at the page Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives/Reports page. I've never been on that page before, but my interest is in Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives/Reports#MaxBioHazard. I do a bit of statistical work see, e.g. User:Smallbones/1000_random and User:Smallbones/1000_random results (check out the graph!)

Max is trying to help me do something similar on ruwikipedia and apparently needs to access my page with his Russian(?) bot to deposit the data. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated.

All the best,

Smallbones(smalltalk) 13:00, 5 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I saw the graph! Incidentally the shelves should be expanded, since the original graphic demonstrated the potential size of a printed Wikipedia.
I'm sure we can resolve this. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 19:19, 5 March 2016 (UTC).Reply

Library fire in Northam Devon?

edit

Back over a decade ago (!) you added a mention of "sun's rays setting fire to leaflets through the action of a hands-free magnifier in a library in Northam Devon." I'm trying to track down more details about this -- do you remember any more about it? For example, what year (or even decade) it happened? Thanks. JesseW, the juggling janitor 02:59, 10 March 2016 (UTC)

I believe it was at the time fairly recent. It may have been sourced from a local paper, or possibly something related to fire prevention. I have commented on the talk page. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:40, 10 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
There's a mention here. 3. Northam Library, Devon, England Total loss of building and 90% books. Fire thought to have started by sun’s rays setting fire to leaflets through action of a hands-free magnifier. The Times 17 June 2005 --Cavrdg (talk) 15:53, 10 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Igbo wiki

edit

Hi and good day, thank you for ur work at Igbo wikipedia! And - if you might have some spare time... you know, as I'm a technical blockhead it would be helpful to get your opinion on some problems there... Best wishes --Tschips (talk) 15:14, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, saw you visited igbo wiki. Would you like to help with some template staff? Greets, --Tschips (talk) 16:03, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Sure, let me know what you need. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:04, 15 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
Hi and - thanks for your positive answer! Here we are:
You know, when using the coordinate's template like here it always shows 'minutes and seconds, therefore I didn't add it to the west african country articles yet where degrees would be sufficient. Besides I couldn't modify it to show up at the top right of the article above the country box, therefore put it in the text which appears to be kind of "raw".
Recently I started to add the navigation board to country articles like in Togo or Senegal. I added the whole table which was a source for copy and paste mistakes, moreover it appeared to be a bit confusing when editing the article. Do you know how to create a "one line expression" to add to the article.
Furthermore I didn't find country boards for other continents - or a board for the nigerian states - don't know how to create them....
Would be nice if you could give some advice or even technical support... Greets, --Tschips (talk) 11:09, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I have changed ig:Togo - the navigation box is simply transcluded with {{Ala no n'ime Afrịka}} the same as any other template.
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:54, 16 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
Ya, great!!! To you it might look simple, but to me it is such a great help... :-) Thanks so much!!! Greets, --Tschips (talk) 18:15, 16 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • I fixed the Coords template so it will work with just degrees and minutes. The display probably needs a change to the .css file.
  • {{Sovereign_states_of_Europe}} is another continent:

There's a good list in the following navbox:

Hey, that was great work you did yesterday! Thanks a lot! For the Europe-template: I tried to fit it into Poland, but it showed like
Àtụ:Sovereign states of Europe
Did I make a mistake? And thanks for the coordinate modification. Looks better now. Might be tricky to work on that? It's seems to be fixed to north / east..., is it? Greets, --Tschips (talk) 16:31, 17 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
We need a tech fix over there. I will contact you there. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:18, 18 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
Hey Rich Farmbrough, ok, we can go on at my talk page. By the way: I tried to create a navigation board for the european countries, hope it didn't crush the system... :-) If you have some spare time could you change the country names to Igbo language? I will sort the table later then. Greets, --Tschips (talk) 23:44, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Could you show me where "and converted to decimal ("Sr"=0, Jr"=1) usually one digit will suffice" was discussed? Bgwhite (talk) 22:08, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

No, however it is used, and for good reason. The first five Mr. Fred Bloggs will otherwise sort as:
  • Bloggs, Fred, III
  • Bloggs, Fred, IV
  • Bloggs, Fred, Jr.
  • Bloggs, Fred, Sr.
  • Bloggs, Fred, V
All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:12, 18 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
It should, of course, read ("Sr"=1, Jr"=2), though either method should have the same effect. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:18, 18 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
Then you'll need to discuss this somewhere. Roman numerals are already converted to numbers. Sr. and Jr. are not and this follows convention put out by the indexing people. 99% of Sr and Jr don't have a follow on to III, defaultsort has been this way for years, and thus tons of articles follow this. It's a very minor point when there are a couple in the list. Bgwhite (talk) 23:15, 18 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Who are "the indexing people"? The citations to Chicago Manual of Style mix up how items should be written with how they should sort, two different things. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 23:18, 18 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
I proposed this, to no opposition here. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 20:48, 19 March 2016 (UTC).Reply

Sheila Fox - possible candidate for an article?

edit

Is this girl worth an article - http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/732dfuk.html , http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/1374545.stm , http://www.historicbolton.yolasite.com/sheila-fox.php Paul Benjamin Austin (talk) 08:33, 19 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

There are probably enough sources - newspaper coverage at the time of the disappearance, and the more recent BBC article. The Historicbolton site is probably not a RS.

…efforts at Shire (pharmaceutical company), and elsewhere, to use a standard form of complete citation, including author, date, title, and (if web) data of content access. In engaging others, please remind them that URL-only citations, and other incomplete, and unstable ways of providing sources, are disallowed by WP:VERIFY, and that use of self-published and non-independent sources are likewise limited to very small roles. Please, somewhere, tie your opinions to the content of WP:VERIFY, WP:CITE, WP:OR, etc. Chapter and verse, please. It is one thing to say "I would rather" to it's my opinion. It is quite another, to declare "This is not true." Make clear the basis of what you argue, please. (Thank you.) Leprof 7272 (talk) 17:03, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
Where in VERIFY does it say that URL only citations are disallowed? If it does say that it should be removed immediately. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 17:33, 22 March 2016 (UTC).Reply
here you go: WP:KDL: "Do not delete a URL just because it has been tagged with [dead link] for a long time." you realize there are more than 69,870 bare urls on this site? [2] Duckduckstop (talk) 19:13, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
I am not surprised (actually it's more because of multiple bare links in an article). I will do something about it if those nice people at Arbcom will let me.
And thanks, that does support my position.

yes, we had some tools, but they need a refresh. tags are not enough. i see there is User:cyberbot II doing some #IABot: i.e. [3], but it needs some citation formating help. cheers Duckduckstop (talk) 20:10, 22 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rich. This edit changed a valid link to that of a redirect to a dab page. Redirects don't need images, nor do dab pages. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:09, 23 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

Request for help with TLS article

edit

Dear Mr Farmbrough,

Apologies for contacting you out of the blue. I am currently writing a book review for the Times Literary Supplement on the history of encyclopaedias, and was hoping to use the example of the Wikipedia page on best-selling books of all time as an extended example of the benefits and perils of Wikipedia. I was wondering whether you might be willing to have a brief email correspondence about the history of the page-edits (esp. the sales figures for Tale of Two Cities)? I'd be very grateful, if so. My email address is peter.thonemann wadh.ox.ac.uk.

With all good wishes,

Speedy deletion nomination of BoostedBoards

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on BoostedBoards requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, a group of people, an individual animal, an organization (band, club, company, etc.), web content, or an organized event, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Proposed deletion of Pan Am Flight 841

edit

The article Pan Am Flight 841 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unrefrenced. No proof of notability. Hijackings in the 60s and 70s were common.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ...William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 15:42, 30 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
