Sunday January 14: Wikipedia Day NYC Celebration and Mini-Conference
editSunday January 14: Wikipedia Day NYC 2018 | |
---|---|
You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day NYC 2018, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 16th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with keynotes, plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions. And there will be cake. We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.
We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 18:41, 27 December 2017 (UTC) |

editWikipedia Day 2018 video
editHi Jim - I finally have a weekend devoted to Wiki learning and writing and came upon my first difficulty. I couldn't find a link to the video recording of WikiDay 2018 where it should be somewhere on the event page Do you think it is there - I don't know how to do an exhaustive search Hannah Silverman (talk) 04:38, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
- I have been patiently waiting. They should be at Media related to Wikipedia Day 2018 NYC videos at Wikimedia Commons but that's empty so far. As it happened I was dining with Wikipedians including @Bluerasberry: a few hours ago and the videos have been delayed getting there because Wikimedia Commons only allows a few rare video formats and they haven't been converted yet from ordinary format. However, most of the videos are at the Livestream site here. The one I shot, no, not yet, but that was for software writers anyway. Doing anything with video, I learned when I gave it a try, takes a lot of time. Would you like me to pedal downtown this weekend to a restaurant or library to meet? I need the exercise, having recently recovered from more than a month of illness. Especially fun if you can invite another new editor. Jim.henderson (talk) 05:05, 25 January 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, I forgot to ping @Hannah Silverman: to make sure you get a little red alert bell at the top of your page.

Disambiguation link notification for March 5
editHi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited World War II by country, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Mobile warfare (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.) pictures on a non-published article
editI tried to put a personally created picture (Cecile Chong wikipedia IMG_6329.jpg) on the sandbox material on this future article material which I am not submitting until better citations as we talked. it seems wiki commons wont let me do until there is an actual stub. Is that right?Nudgol (talk) 02:39, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
- Nice to hear from you again so soon, @Nudgol: In all my years I never heard of such a restriction, but there's always a first time. Incidentally it's easier if you can link to the various things in question, though it was easy to see that what you are talking about is User:Nudgol/sandbox. A little investigation turned up File:Cecile Chong wikipediq IMG 6329.jpg. Oh, of course you don't know that odd little insider's trick of the two brackets and colon; silly forgetful me. Anyway with the Edit Source you can see the line at the top of this section which invokes that picture. You can paste that line into your sandbox; I'll let you do it rather than put it in myself. You should also look in your Commons watchlist to see what happens to the picture; sometimes they are deleted because of minor errors that could easily be corrected if only the author noticed the warning.
- Incidentally tonight, Tuesday, I'll be dining with a few old friends at the Park Plaza Restaurant [1] in Brooklyn Heights, convenient to Downtown Brooklyn subways, 7 PM in the back of the restaurant. We'll bring our laptops and cameras and discuss local history and putting pictures in Wikipedia, among other topics. You and others watching this page will be welcome; there's always a spare table in case we get an unexpected crowd. Good Wi-Fi and good food, too. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:42, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

accumulator
editgood day.
in this edit you added a beautiful photo of Walther calculator. however, the main visible feature is not the accumulator (which is partially shown at the lower right section), but the "rotor", a row of pinwheels that activate the accumulator. because it's such a beautiful machine, i'm replacing it with another photo from the same photographer, where the accumulator is a bit more prominent.

Event coordinator granted
editAfter reviewing your request for the "eventcoordinator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:
- The event coordinator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
- The event coordinator right allows you to temporarily add the "confirmed" permission to newly created accounts. You should not grant this for more than 10 days.
- The event coordinator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the event coordinator right will result in its removal by an administrator.
- Please note, if you were previously a member of the "account creator" group, your flag may have been converted to this new group.
If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the event coordinator right. Happy editing! — xaosflux Talk 21:54, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

New Page Patrol?
editHi Jim.henderson,
I've recently been looking for editors to invite to join New Page Patrol, and from your editing history, I think you would be a good candidate. Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; we could use some additional help from an experienced user like yourself. The flag might also come in handy with your event coordination activities.
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. If you choose to apply, you can drop an application over at WP:PERM/NPR.
Cheers, and hope to see you around, — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 13:04, 16 June 2018 (UTC)
- I am honored, @Insertcleverphrasehere: but have already bitten off more than I can chew. More of my time and edits now go to pictures in Wikimedia Commons, another of the many corners of the Wiki-empire that need more attention from us experienced editors. I hope the recent ban on new articles without an account is a help. Jim.henderson (talk) 19:03, 20 June 2018 (UTC)
- Yes ACTRIAL has been an enormous help. If you are busy elsewhere that is totally fine, and uploading of images to commons is something that we also need more of, so thanks for that work! See you around and thanks for your work on Wikipedia. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 19:17, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

question about your edit
editHi there Jim, noticed you added a hyperlink to the word "space" in my article on Thaddeus Stanley Golas. Isn't that a word everyone already knows the meaning of? Does it help the reader to define "space"? I wouldn't have thought to do that. So my questions are: why do you think it is helpful and how did you even notice this obscure article? Invitation re: Fourth Amendment related police procedure pages
editHi Jim.henderson, you responded to a comment I left on the Economic inequality page. My main interest is fixing up Terry stop and Consent search over the next few weeks. I left some messages on the Talk pages there and I'd like to see if I can get you interested. If so, please visit :-)
ArbCom 2018 election voter message
editHello, Jim.henderson. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

editWhatever you reverted [2], it had nothing to do with my edit to the introduction: [3]. Cheers, Rowan Forest (talk) 03:09, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for noticing, @Rowan Forest: Yes, of several edits I only reverted the mistaken one.Jim.henderson (talk) 19:36, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Can you offer your opinion in this discussion?
editHi. In the past you've offered your opinion in choosing photos for the Infobox. Can you offer your neutral opinion in this discussion on a related topic? It may go toward a precedent regarding captions. Thanks, and Happy Holidays. Nightscream (talk) 20:06, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for all the input on Economic inequality!
editHi Jim.henderson, thanks for all your amazing input on talk:Economic inequality. It's fun hearing you describe how you have to do surgery on these pages and all the negotiations it takes. Harlem, Long Island Railroad, and the Constitution of the United States are all iconic pages. I'm thanking you here instead of there because I want to let the other users get involved in the discussion. BTW, I split off New York City housing crisis from Affordable housing. No one is working on it. I plan on redoing it in a few weeks, but I thought I would mention it to you if you're interested. Thanks again! Seahawk01 (talk) 04:55, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

editSeems to be something missing in the sentence you edited - "This was a of confusion and of political animosity" - needs a word after "a" - pointed out in a note at OTRS Ticket:2018120810002089. Ronhjones (Talk) 13:44, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you, @Ronhjones: indeed it's my error a month ago. I am surprised it took so long; quicker if you simply trimmed the the passage as I did today, since the topic is adequately covered in the linked main article. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:11, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- It not really my subject, we do get lots of messages at OTRS saying "page X is wrong". Usually we tell them they can fix it, but they was not sure what word was missing. Ronhjones (Talk) 02:05, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- Ah. The original complainant saw the error, but was clueless and anxious, so your part was just to find and notify the culprit, namely me. The clumsiness of this method surprises me, but thanks again, @Ronhjones: for your part. Jim.henderson (talk) 02:27, 9 December 2018 (UTC)
- I got the impression that English was not their first language. Thank for the help, anyway. Ronhjones (Talk) 06:17, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

I am unable to sign up on Everbrite. Have you registered there? Any advice?
Perhaps Jersey as lightning talk. No, no, not New Jersey, across the river, Jersey in the Duchy of Normandy.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 22:51, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
- Got busy and later forgot about this. Sure, @Dthomsen8: it sounds like a good topic and one of which I know almost nothing. I could do one about New Jersey but signed at the Lightning Talk section with wiki-photography instead. Maybe with NJ examples. Yesterday I also signed on the Volunteer page which was an external link. Don't remember; was that Everbrite? Whatever; it gave me no difficulty; just gave my E-mail and will be contacted. I assume my hand will heal by then and let me work as porter or whatever. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:49, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
- I registered today on Everbrite.

I suspect I could easily do the lighthouse and peninsula in Normandy.--Dthomsen8 (talk) 17:42, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
- Idle moment while the astronomy lecturer describes the horoscope he cast for New York in the January 21 lunar eclipse. Most these lightning talks are technical, not topical, but I can’t guess whether this makes you smarter than most or dumber. Anyway, different, probably pleasant, and maybe highly informative. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:26, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- Jim, You already know more about Jersey from the above list than you did before. I plan to talk a very little bit about Jersey and other Channel Islands, 1 minute or less, and two minutes about what I plan to do this year, ending with a pitch for editors to join me. I will reherse this week, and I will have a handout on paper and online. --Dthomsen8 (talk) 03:28, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
