April 2018
editHello, I'm I dream of horses. I noticed that in this edit to Nicole Awai, you removed content without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry, the removed content has been restored. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message (talk to me) (My edits) @ 18:57, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
Why were all my edits deleted?
editMy deletions were correct because the links were deficient and or dead. i replaced them with correct citations. I did this after reorganizing the entire article to improve readability but didn't delete any data therein. Now I find all my edits undone. If this work is not according to wikipedia standards please explain.Nudgol (talk) 19:28, 3 April 2018 (UTC)
- Fortunately, this case does not require an effort to WP:Assume good faith, because it's between a long-time editor of good reputation and a newbie whom I met a few weeks ago while coaching at a WP:Art+Feminism session and has been a friend ever since. I pretty much dictated the above paragraph, but without reading on a screen or asking enough questions, so it's not quite on point.
- @I dream of horses: You may have noticed that my friend spent much effort over a couple days in reorganizing and re-referencing the article in question. Of course, that does not excuse mistakes, but it gave rise to a flutter of panic and a phone call to me. Hours later, checking in myself, I took a quick look at your undo and, far as I can see, you incorrectly identified the erroneous edit. The edit you chose indeed deleted words, which were variously re-added in later edits or were inadequately referenced.
- The error that I think is genuine is this one which, without explanation, deleted the infobox. In honest disputes among attentive editors hasty correction is not my habit, so I'll only act after waiting overnight. My intention is to revert your undo, and then restore the missing infobox. If you see this reply before then, you might want to do that yourself or else reply explaining where my analysis went wrong. Incidentally, I am not following your suggestion that my reply be in your talk page, on the theory that we old-timers can handle irregularities more easily than a newbie can follow the sequence of one of our many regular procedures. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:54, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Jim.henderson: and Nudgol I went ahead and self-reverted. In this situation, it made sense to not leave a message on my talk page, but somewhere else. -- I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message (talk to me) (My edits) @ 03:49, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- All right I restored the infobox. It had a few errors such as adding information that does not fit the template format and trying to use a picture on a distant Website, so I repaired those. Infoboxes are, alas, one of the many tools in Wikipedia that need separate study to use properly. Ping templates are another. Pinging was invented years ago in an attempt to alleviate one of the inadequacies of encyclopedia software in organizing discussions. Eventually we'll have a better solution, but for now we're in the unfortunate situation that a newbie must learn to use the software in order to ask how to use the software.
- @I dream of horses: one little thing that you did made it more difficult. You said that my friend's version had been "restored" which, since it was not yet true, caused much concern. That version had been preserved, and it could be restored, which is not at all the same thing as "has been restored". You should say "has been preserved" or maybe "can be restored" or perhaps even both. I hope you can get a chance to coach at an edit-a-thon and get a good idea how hard this all is for a beginner no matter how attentive and eager. We had the advantage of working in an existing mess where nobody could react promptly on the rare occasion when our bungling made a bad article even worse. Anyway it seems all has ended well and we can all continue to march. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:59, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Jim.henderson: I honestly don't recall saying anything had been "restored"...? Am I forgetting something? I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message (talk to me) (My edits) @ 14:12, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- I dream of horses: Hee-hee, even the wisest make tismakes. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:32, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
@Jim.henderson: Oh, of course, the template. Apologies. I dream of horses If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message (talk to me) (My edits) @ 15:34, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- @I dream of horses:@Jim.henderson: even though i don't explicitly understand, thank you both , and I will get my coach to explain explicitly what was against WP procedures.Nudgol (talk) 18:56, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

- This particular event won't be about intros and explanations like the editathons, but more focused on nitty gritty and bureacracy of planning our next steps as a chapter. For something rather brader covering the same areas, you may prefer our monthly WikiWednesday in 2 weeks on April 25, which is more of an salon-style event for new and long-term members alike.--Pharos (talk) 15:08, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Tuesday evening meeting?
editThis is something I just now sent by E-mail, except I've edited out some parts.
- I was going to write to you a couple days ago .... but I was unexpectedly in Pittsburgh, and busy, and deprived of my most accustomed communication hardware.
- I intended to invite you .... to the monthly meeting of the Kings Byte Computer Club. So, here's your invitation. .... That will be Tuesday evening, 12 June at 7 PM at the same place, Park Plaza Restaurant, 220 Cadman Plaza West and Cranberry Walk, convenient to Downtown Brooklyn subway stations. Go right in, I mean, bear left since we're not in the bar but in the back of the dining room.
- > I have one small but essential phase of my work to shore up. And that is the talking to others. Heck, I would talk to you properly and not here on email If I just could get the system down.
- It's not terribly complex. Corresponding on Talk Pages is the same as writing articles. Except, umm, different. Every page, be it an article or a rulebook or a fellow editor's personal page or other kinds, has a tab for its Talk Page or Discussion Page. Click that, and either add a reply to the bottom of an ongoing discussion, or click the thing for adding a "New Topic". There's some additional rigmarole for using a colon or two (sometimes three or four colons) at the beginning of a reply so as to indent, which marks the reply as different from the previous thing that someone else said that you are answering. And sign with four tildes ~~~~.
- Talk Pages speak in a conversational tone, unlike articles that try to sound like the Voice of God and Britannica. Anyway if you goof up these things, it marks you as a beginner, but you're not trying to pass yourself off as an old-timer, so no problem. ..... Jim.henderson (talk) 19:36, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Seeking help
editYes, WP talk pages stink. The editing interface is ugly and complex; the rules on punctuation, politeness and other matters are similarly complex and often not followed, and there's no privacy for those few matters that need privacy. That's why some business is carried out on external channels including E-mail groups, Facebook pages, and Twitter. In Cape Town I couldn't keep up with several things that were happening until I was told to install Telegraph on my phone.
However, discussions of how to edit articles belong on-Wiki. That's to secure maximum attention. One complication is, where to ask, on the literally millions of pages that are for communication among editors? When it's about a particular article, the venue is its talk page. When it's a particular other editor, it's theirs. For a vaguer question like how to get a translation done, it's more difficult. WP:Teahouse is often a good start for elementary questions, as are the talk pages of editors you already know. More advanced questions often find useful answers on the various divisions of WP:Village Pump. Anyway, with proper use of forums and watchlist it is sometimes easy and it is usually possible. Jim.henderson (talk) 04:48, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
User:Jim.henderson, I do have WP:Teahouse and WP:Village Pump on watchlist. I do try to fathom what people on WP are talking about (in the background as I call it) half the time not knowing their articles which I then have to look up and then hearing personal gripes and such, and all those dreadful abbreviations. Combing through different discussions on those and others about extraneous things often seem like such a waste of time and make me lose focus if I let them. I have no idea where or to whom I can just barge in and say I need some info on how to get someone who wants to translate properly an article on a German artist. Ok well at least I talked. That is some progress. Thanks Nudgol (talk) 21:57, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Yes, you're moving along. Your later entries at Teahouse were better formulated, better formatted, and ultimately successful. As you noticed, a successful translation of German language is not enough to bridge the gap between the citation practices of two Wikipedias (due to cultural differences) so more work remains. Yes, as in other pursuits, there's a jargon among Wikipedians, in this case laden with TDM-TLA (Too Darn Many Three-Letter Acronyms). As with other jargons, it makes communication easier for insiders and harder for outsiders. Teahouse makes a real effort to bridge the gap; VP does not. Anyway I hope you will join us, Tuesday evening. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:35, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College | |
Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City. New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events. |

Hello Nudgol, I noticed that you added a death date to Moira Roth, an article I created. Sad news, indeed. I am wondering if you have a reliable source for her death, as the wording in the lead needs modification, but need a source for birth and death dates. I didn't find any announcement about it in the usual newspapers or art journals. Thank you in advance, Netherzone (talk) 13:10, 16 June 2021 (UTC) July 2021 at Women in Rededit
