It seems to be working out well enough. Life has been delightful including the Jersey City Ward Tour a week and a half ago and yesterday's group of 18 hot and humid old folks biking through The Bronx, Yonkers and Hastings (I know the number because a head count was among my duties). Summertime means more time pedaling around snapping pictures and less time processing them, so I am just today handling pix of JC taken 'way back on April 14 on my way back from Secaucus. This weekend I must mostly stay indoors and hope to get my backlog down to a month and a half. Maybe it will be easier after retiring from my job in a few months. Queens Village Pics

Is there any chance you have some pics from Queens Village, Queens in your files, or know of some other editor who has them? I just uploaded nearly a dozen of Queens Village (LIRR station) yesterday, and I've seriously considered creating a new category for it. I would hang the subcat from Jamaica, since QV lies south of the Moraine, was in that Township, and has a 114 ZIP code. No; got no pix from there, or nearly anywhere, that I haven't already uploaded. Just the seven weeks backlog of ones snapped on bike trips, now working through my May 16th trip in western Essex and southern Morris Counties. And an hour from now I'll be pedaling north with a biker gang through Central Park for today's target, Piermont, New York. So few days in a lifetime; so many interesting places to go and photograph. In the former township but not in the former village now called "Downtown" Jamaica, so there's room for judgement. My Piermont expedition stopped at Englewood Cliffs when a lack of food and money came to light and I returned to GW Bridge. As it happens, the Tour de Queens is next weekend. Route from Flushing is unknown to me, but might go through QV or I could go there afterward. We'll see. Busy, busy. Allen Street intersection

Jim, I see that I'm not the only editor intrigued by your prolific photographic record of New York City. May I add another request? I see that you have a photograph of the meridian mall on Allen Street, looking south from Delancey, which is used to illustrate Allen Street (Manhattan). Is there a chance that you may have a photograph of the building at the southwest corner of Allen and Delancey? That would be 105 Allen, and I believe that is the same building that was the site of a horrific fire in 1905 that claimed the lives of 20 people. I'm considering starting an article on that fire, but I've found no photos of the building, either then or now. (sigh)Sometimes I think someone should make a Google Street View crown for me to wear, instead of a helmet when bicycling, recording panoramic views of everything I pass. Anyway, no, I have no indication or recollection that I swiveled 60 degrees right and got that shot. There's a chance my return from Williamsburg tomorrow evening will be on Delancey Street and we'll see if it yields a picture though Sun angle is likely to be unfavorable, or the trip might even be cancelled or go over another bridge. Puerta del Conde

Hey Jim, I just referenced that latin inscription on the page. If you go to the reference you'll see that it's so. Yet I don't think that the referenced webpage looks too reliable, so if you believe that you can correct the Latin grammar please do.

I actually used some translator (and it say that the phrase translates to "Sweetness and Beauty is for fatherland to die,"yet I also know that these translators aren't reliable, because if I input a Spanish phrase I often get gibberish. So if you're fluent in Latin please help.

I didn't really learn Latin and can't find my grammar book but I'm pretty sure "decori" is plural, while the other adjective "dulce" is correctly written as singular. Also the second "i" in "morii" invalidates it from being a word at all. I think. The more usual version from Horatius is "Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori". So, though a Latin scholar might help, what we need is a reliable source for the inscription. Even better if someone can supply a photo, in a country I have never visited. Luck has a lot to do with it. Having looked at the Avenue of Americas article for downtown reasons, the next day I was looking in the Manhattan image category with a view to subdividing it. Ain't gonna do that, but wow, someone's unused and precisely relevant photo was sitting there, waiting to be picked up. In a few hours I expect to be walking up the Avenue in Midtown and will look out for other surviving signs. Sounds good. If you had an exact time I could adjust my walking speed to arrive at the PATH exit, but maybe better to meet in the basement Reference Room of the library. Let's see; 40 minutes by IND from 14th Street to Ft Washington Ave, two hours walking mostly downhill and wandering, and 40 minutes by IRT from Inwood to Sheridan Square in time for the big meeting, would mean meeting at 11:10. Thanks; that did it. I'm still a bit grumpy at the process; a block notice should be more complete and give links to a log that explains a particular action rather than just a vague discussion of general principles. Admins shouldn't impose a block without having a way to find out which of their address blocking actions are blocking a particular user's editorial attempts. Electrical insulators

Hello. Re: you added an image of electrical insulators to Overhead power line - I like the image - but it is in silhouette and lacks colour - would you consider choosing another insulator image that shows more - there are lots at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Electric_insulator eg I find http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Endmast_Bernhausen_-_20090909-05.jpeg more 'encyclopedic' since it shows the insulators, wires and other bits in more detail, and with more colour.

Hi, we met at the convention last week. Currently most of the church building article stubs that you've been contributing photos to have the potential to be up for deletion. I had been creating articles of noteworthy churches not on the NHRP. The discussion was primarily based on an abundance of New England church article stubs but seems to be deciding that archtiecture stubs outside of the NHRP are not notable and should deleted in mass, as opposed to those articles on the NHRP. New York City Marble Cemetery

Hello. The New York Marble Cemetery article says it's located between 2nd and 3rd Streets, putting it on the north side of 2nd. Is that incorrect? Station1 (talk) 01:20, 23 January 2011 (UTC)

Oops! Drat; I thought I knew the difference but now I see Google Maps putting NYMC at

40°43′32.1″N 73°59′27.4″W and NYCMC at 40°43′28.5″N 73°59′20.6″W which means they are both on the north side of East 2nd and what separates them is The Bowery, not 2d. Yes, it's pleasant to link a person to the handle, and more pleasant the second time. After a few unhappy experiences, mostly in Google, I have come to mistrust online databases to do this job. All mine are by map study and geotagging camera, including recently my new Samsung M910 camera phone, which is a less versatile or convenient camera but more reliable geotagger of its photos. Of course it is easy with a GPS camera, but you may also have older photos, or other peoples photos for which you may want to obtain coordinates. Checking them with Google Maps or Bing maps is something I regularly do. Also, sometimes I want to add coordinates for a bridge or building a long way from where I am, so this technique can be helpful. --DThomsen8 (talk) 02:00, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Sure; as in the case of

, a photo dominated by buildings that were town down before either of us old farts was born. I'm not saying GE and Bing's aerial pictures have many errors (though I've found quite a few in Google Street View). What I'm saying is about the coordinates their lists give for addresses and especially for buildings. Google's coordinates for

for example are off by more than half a mile, presumably because they are based on a mail drop for the parish rather than something to do with the NRHP building. This is not at all rare, nor is it rare to find coordinates for a street address that are out in the middle of the street or, less explicably, on the property boundary with another building.

Also practically all my coordinates in uploads are written manually into EXIF by Microsoft Pro Photos or by GE working through Picasa. That goes even for the ones that the camera coded, because those are usually off by more than five yards and sometimes a couple hundred. Position checking is one of the things that slow my uploads. The new camera phone eases the job by coding the great majority of its pictures rather than a small minority in the big city, and by doing those five or sometimes times more accurately.
