According to Louis-Frédéric, Eisō was "king of the Ryūkyū Islands in the thirteenth century" ... -- see Nussbaum, Louis-Frédéric. (2002). Japan Encyclopedia, p. 172., p. 172, at Google Books

I modified the first paragraph and the succession box -- changing from "King of Okinawa" to "King of Ryukyu Islands" because of this reliable source. --Tenmei (talk) 09:35, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Thought I recognised the name, he's the legendary cousin of the alleged Genghis Khan! Funny old world.

• "The official histories of the Ryukyu Kingdom" might want to specify that they ruled/lived on Okinawa.

• "against Riyū, who had usurped" was Riyū a god too?
  • One of the sources called Shunten the first human ruler, and now I realized it was probably not something they thought about much. Clarified that lol. - G
• "He gained the recognition" should the "the" be there?

• "as the overlord of Okinawa chieftans in 1187" unless you're paying attention to the dates, this sounds like a different event to the revolt against Riyū.

• Hi Generalissima, this article was an interesting read! Article long enough, well-sourced, copyvio-free, and presentable. This nomination is just within the 7 day deadline. QPQ done. Hook is interesting and sourced (offline accepted in good faith).

I can't help but think a hook along the lines of: "... that the myth of Shunten, the legendary first king of Chūzan, was used to justify the 1872 annexation of Okinawa?" would be more interesting, if just because it shows how late this myth still had currency (I also suspect front page readers would be more familiar with Okinawa than Ryukyu).
