Thierry_Henry#Endorsements

I've removed said section, no other FA I've found has it, and it is unclear why it is so significant it deserves a list in the biography. Now the BLP is shorter and better. Sandman888 (talk) 10:28, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Michael Jordan, albeit an FA on a different type of sportsperson, has a similar section. We can condense the section, I'm not sure why you are so averse to the factual information about his endorsements if indeed that is a substantial source of revenue for him. Chensiyuan (talk) 14:05, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
At Jordan I get it, it's relevant because Nike named a shoe after Jordan and marketed it as a Jordan-shoe. This is entirely different to Henry appearing on a poster saying Pepsi is great. Furthermore Jordans section isn't list-like and poorly written. I propose the section should still be deleted. Sandman888 (talk) 14:38, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
What are we talking about here exactly? – Michael (talk) 19:50, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
The Thierry_Henry#Endorsements section Sandman888 (talk) 20:54, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Making a caricature of the situation (Henry obviously does more than appear on a poster) is a poor attempt to foreclose discussion. The fact that a person is one of the most marketed in the world (in monetary terms) is mentioned in various FAs on athletes, and if you need another example you can look at Ian Thorpe. If you've a problem with the prose, the solution is not to take out the entire section, and not to mention delete references that destroy other references in the body. Chensiyuan (talk) 09:35, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Examples won't cut it. Steve Bruce doesn't have one, therefore we shouldn't (to follow the example logic). Which other references? There is one reference in the lead, and that's all. Don't try to make it sound like this is written into the article and mentioned several places when it isn't. Sandman888 (talk) 10:21, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Failed analogy. I gave you two examples of two of the most highly marketed athletes in the world, which targets the shared characteristic at hand, and you're suggesting that Steve Bruce falls in that class? As for the references, when you take out references beginning with "ref name", you will want to check the references section to see if any references are broken as a result. There was in this case. Chensiyuan (talk) 14:55, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
The reference can easily be repaired. But given that the section needs copyedit I've tagged it as such instead Sandman888 (talk) 08:14, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Handball versus ireland

perhaps the most infamous image of Thierry Henry is of his hand ball in the world cup qualifier versus ireland. shouldn't there be a copy of this image in the article, as it does refer to one of the major incidents in Henry's career, and was the subject of worldwide coverage, even in countries which do not demonstrate a big interest in football? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Robof231 (talkcontribs) 12:08, 12 June 2010 (UTC) --Robof231 (talk) 12:13, 12 June 2010 (UTC)--Robof231 (talk) 12:15, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Commercials in Wikipedia?

Should there really be sections for which commercials a football-player has been in? Is it really important to a biography? So Henri advertised for Pepsi at a time, but should there then be opened for any company he has endorsed in his career? I foresee, that a lot of companies will start to rewrite any bio, so their product is mentioned in the bios. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fightdane (talkcontribs) 17:41, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

Mistakes in this article

"Henry left Monaco in January 1999, one year before his friend and teammate David Trézéguet, and moved to Italian Serie A club Juventus for £10.5 million.[4] He played on the wing,[7] but he was ineffective against the Serie A defensive discipline in a position uncharacteristic for him, and scored just three goals in 16 appearances.[8]"

How was playing in the wing uncharactaristic for him? Up until that point, he had been a winger his whole career. Citation 7 is also expired now.

The section on Henry's playing style uses citations that merely someone's point of view. WEll his cousin Marvellinho is going to replace him

He has retired from the national team. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 175.156.7.232 (talk) 19:56, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Regarding MLS - only add officially confirmed transfers

Please do not add info about Henry joining any other club until its official, per the WP:FOOTY guideline or per WP:NOHEARSAY (or whatever it's called). Sandman888 (talk) 19:54, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware there is no guideline preventing the addition of relevant news being reported in reliable sources, such as this, which looks a little more substantial than just a rumour. Even if no move happens, it is certainly worthy of inclusion in the article that Barcelona confirmed they are in talks with the Red Bulls. If you are going to revert three different editors point blank three times for trying to add this, you should at least be able to link to the guideline you believe you are applying. MickMacNee (talk) 22:19, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
The deal is not official yet, I already read articles that said he will join the New York Red Bulls, which I don't understand why, but those don't prove anything. You should consider Henry joining New York, but we're still waiting for the final word. – Michael (talk) 23:22, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Players are linked to new clubs all the time and reported by even decent sources all the time. The wise thing to do will be to wait for more solid sources to corroborate the story before acting. Chensiyuan (talk) 02:47, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
The source is perfectly valid for what it says, and what it says is perfectly valid info for the article. I will say again, if there is a policy preventing this from being added, let's see it, otherwise, stop getting in people's way without good reason. MickMacNee (talk) 10:59, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
WP:NOTNEWS. Btw, editting is done by consensus, so if one or more editors find an edit controversial a consensus should be reached at the talk-page before editting. Sandman888 (talk) 13:30, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Lol, typical. So now soccernet (inter alia) has reported that Henry has denied the transfer, what then? Shall we report it too? This will go on forever. I've already explained that the nature of such news is that they come and go and the back and forth is to no end till the transfer is a done deal. Have some sense of reality and the practical consequences that senseless edits like this will bring about. Chensiyuan (talk) 14:05, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
He's denied the transfer? I dont think so. He told soccernet "For the moment, nothing is certain". That does not contradict the previous source, or any other source that I've seen for that matter. This is beyond NOT#NEWS, by a long way, and would easily be covered in one line under the Barcelona section, if the intention is to make this article actualy reflect reality. This would be a standard update in any other footballer article, and would go in without any objection or drama. There is no policy based reason why Thierry Henry should be any different. MickMacNee (talk) 15:12, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Oh yeah, every year any given prominent footballer is openly courted by some other team, and the whole circus of yeah he's a done deal and oh he's not a done deal is played out. Let's report all of that! Oh wait, while we're at that, since "nothing is certain" is in your mind THE SAME as "I'm going to New York", footballers who've said "nothing is certain in football" should be reported every time they spout that rhetoric! Hmm, I guess reporting that 1000 times is okay. It's all good news that WP should care about. It's all very valuable. Manderiko (talk) 12:21, 12 June 2010 (UTC)
Christ. I assume you don't have a television, don't read newspapers, and aren't watching the World Cup. Whenver France is discussed, the only subject that comes up is Henry's blatant handball and Henry's imminent move to the USA, because ever since that handball his career for both club and country has nosedived, and the handball has become a defining moment for him and for France. You guys can bury your heads in the sand all you want, it just makes Wikipedia's article on Henry look discreditted at best, massaged at worse. I'm waiting to see what the article will look like if he does move to the USA. No doubt he will be painted as the most talented and marketable footballer ever to play in the MLS, or some other such puffed up blatant bollocks. MickMacNee (talk) 16:29, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

New Information on Henry at Red Bulls

I request to add a line to the Red Bulls section:

Henry scored in his debut for the Red Bulls on 22 July 2010 in an exhibition match against the English Premier League club, Tottenham Hotspurs. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pavlovscat567 (talkcontribs) 05:50, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I also request that the main picture of Henry be changed. The current picture shows him in a Barcelona jersey (his old team). The photo should be updated to show him in a Red Bulls jersey. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pavlovscat567 (talkcontribs) 05:51, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

A new picture would have to be at least as good quality wise, not just be more up to date. I doubt there are many, if any, free license and high quality photos of him in a Red Bulls jersey yet anyway. Camw (talk) 05:58, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll look for free licence photos. What about adding a line to the career stats that shows his new stats at Red Bulls? Currently, it still shows Barcelona. Also, in the top-right bracket, it says that henry has 1 appearance and 1 goal: but are goals in friendlies counted, ordinarily, on Wiki? I don't think it does. I'm sure Henry scored tons of pre-season and friendly goals that aren't listed with his Barca and Arsenal tallies. I think we should only list goals in official league play, including CCF/Superliga. Endorsements - Renault. - correction required.

'Henry featured in the Renault Clio advertisements in which he popularised the term va-va-voom, meaning "life" or "passion". His romantic interest in the commercial was his then-wife, Claire "Nicole" Merry.'

There is no link whatsoever between Claire Merry and the 'Nicole' character (Estelle Skornik?) from previous Clio ads. This needs changed for accuracy. Just 'Claire Merry' will suffice. --Weirdingmodule (talk) 13:00, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

I'll tell why this article is protected→ → → →France vs Republic of Ireland 2010 FIFA World Cup play-off

LOL this article is an utter piece of POV propaganda written by people who have their own agenda (hmm do any work for Henry's PR company I ownder?). Take the intro:

Thierry Daniel Henry (French pronunciation: [tjɛʁi ɑ̃ʁi]; born 17 August 1977) is a French professional footballer who plays for the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer. And that's it...what a nice man!

No mention of why he plays in America "because he washed his career down the drain when he deliberately handled the ball twice during the controversial France vs Republic of Ireland FIFA World Cup play-offs in 2009."

Henry managed to infuriate an entire country with his actions but there is just one mention with two sentences buried in the article. And you wonder why this article is vandalised so often? I mean what is the notability for such behaviour in the English-speaking world? The ire of an entire country's 4.4m population? It seems that the Wikipedia editors who spend so much free time on here trying to protect their version of the truth should wake up to the fact he will be known in western Europe as one of the biggest cheats to ever walk the face of the earth. What value is there to denying that fact? Pop quiz for you: if Henry went for a walk up O'Connell St in Dublin, Ireland what are the chances he'd be: a) welcomed with open arms b) given a good thrashing?

Maybe you'll start to understand why this article is far from neutral! Seems to me, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year people watch this page like hawks, for what? Nothing save moral superiority and the need for self aggrandising!!! Doesn't the frequency of reverts and insertions regarding Henry's behaviour go some way to suggest that you've got it wrong? It would to me, but rather than admit that, the page is blocked and protected from the masses who dare suggest that Henry has blown his entire career down the pan.

An article that is not "contentious" doesn't get trouble because it expresses facts in terms that most people would find acceptable. But when an article is just the agenda of a minority then it draws in responses from all and sundry. (I know I am not the first and I certainly won't be the last to make such comments on this article). Any right-minded person reading this can tell that this article is a whitewash of the facts all because some self-appointed Wikipedia users don't want to concede defeat. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.173.141.224 (talk) 01:13, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

In case of theirry henry's summary given on the right side of the page, only those goals and matches have been included in his arsenal carrer which he has played and scored in the premier league.whereas, the number of matches that he has played in Fa cup, carlling cup and champions league matches have not been included there in as well as the respective goal count in those matches.this gives an incorrect impression of the number of matches and goals in which he has featured. In all theirry henry has playes 374 matches for arsenal and scored 219 goals.

As Thierry Henry is no longer a F.C. Barcelona player, I believe that the heading picture should be changed. It could be replaced with either:

The handball incident should feature far more prominently in the Wiki. It is barely mentioned in the Wiki; let alone not being in the introduction.

It should be featured for obvious reasons - the incident came to worldwide attention and sparked massive controversy. It is the most known moment of Henry's career. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.9.177.21 (talk) 11:52, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Completely agree, but Wikipedia is edited by people with too much unwarranted self importance. Note this page is blocked to any IP with an opinion. The only views allowed on the "great" Henry are those from the established cabal of known editors. He basically handled twice to keep the ball in play making it one of the most flagrant breaches in the laws of Football. Yet there is no mention of it or the fact that this man incurred the ire of any entire nation. Yeah complete BS but par for the course on this cabal-controlled propaganda project. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.150.226.106 (talk) 11:18, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Leaving aside nationalist arguments, compare Diego Maradona (another scandal-tainted footballing great). The good and the bad are in Maradona's introduction (andd there are a lot more bad incidents). When Henry returned to Arsenal, the number 14, the number Henry have always played with, was taken by Theo Walcott, so Henry chose number 12, the number which he used at his first club, Monaco, and France. He should have 6 games for Arsenal not 5 since his return in 2012. One premier league game is missing.

Arsene Wenger references

The first two sentences, of the second paragraph in the "Monaco (1992–1999) and Juventus (1999)" section can give the impression Wenger was managing Monaco well beyond September 1994. Given that is when Wenger left however, whatever tutelage Henry had at Monaco after that point, it was from someone else. The wording and tack seems to have stemmed from reference [2] which has erroneous information in it. Baarb (talk) 03:47, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey, Thierry Henry has made 337+39 caps for Arsenal so far, and scored 229 goals...the statistics on this page are incorrect. If you need clarification, it has it on Arsenal's webpage.

Please read the bottom of the infobox which says "Senior club appearances and goals counted for the domestic league only". The figures are correct based on the site you linked for premier league appearances. Camw (talk) 09:00, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Infobox picture

Shouldn't the infobox picture show more of Henry's face, regardless of keeping update with his current team? I'd say his loan to Arsenal picture is far more clear than the one that is currently used. The Madras (talk) 07:57, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Don't think there's an immediately clear answer. The loan picture is terrible in image quality; the Barca picture is better. But, a picture reflecting where he is makes sense and is pretty conventional. Chensiyuan (talk) 09:05, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Edit request on 30 July 2012 Thierry Henry

Page: THIERRY HENRY

Please change: 1999–2007 Arsenal 254 (174) TO: 1999-2004 Arsenal 373 (226)

Please change: 2012→ Arsenal (loan) 4 (1) TO: 2012 Arsenal (loan) 4 (2)

Reason: Thierry Henry between the years 1999–2007 made 373 Appearances for Arsenal Football Club scoring 226 Goals during his loan spell in 2012 he made 4 appearances scoring twice. One vs Leeds United and one vs Sunderland FC. Thierry Henry did score another goal vs Blackburn, however this was later chalked off by the dubious goals panel.

You're probably referring to the infobox. You'll have to read the fineprint at the bottom of the box. Anyway the stat you're looking for is found in the career stats box. It's 2 goals, instead of 3, because one of them was adjudged as an OG, which is explained in the table. Chensiyuan (talk) 13:53, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Better intro.

This page somehow does not show the almost legendary status that Henry enjoyed in the Premier League. Nowhere in the intro does it mention that he was at his peak, literally, the best Premier League player of the time and one of the best in the world, sometimes single-handedly being responsible for Arsenal victories, who were at that time one of the top two clubs in EPL. His impact at Arsenal and popularity and skill as a striker just don't come through in the intro when you read up on the man. Please fix this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.106.18.10 (talk) 20:02, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

I want to edit this page because Thierry Henry did not score 1 goal o his return to Arsenal but he scored 3 goals. This page has provided wrong information to many people. So plaese let me edit this page.

Can the Summary of his career in the box on the right hand side to say 2014 to end his red bull contract

49.204.28.150 (talk) 08:28, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

Not done An edit request is to say exactly what you want to be done and then someone makes the edit for you, we can not give out permissions to edit the page, that is not how it works. And officially Henry scored one league goal in his Arsenal comeback as the second goal later was judged to be a own goal (source below stats table) and also in infobox we only list league caps and goals. Do you have any source saying he scored more than one league goal? QED237 (talk) 10:04, 23 October 2014 (UTC)
To clarify 1 league goal (added in article), 1 later judged to be own goal, and 1 cup goal so yeah it was 3goals but only one official league goal. QED237 (talk) 10:07, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

"Honours"

Question: Does losing in the final of "a championship" constitute an honour?

In my my opinion of course not, it is simple only winning is an honour. Losing in a final is not an honour no matter what the tournament is. Simple you win it is an honour. You lose it is not an honour. If losing is an honour how far down the line does it count as an honour, Semi-final, Quarter-final, knockout stages, group stages? I think not. Winning is an honour and nothing else. Sport and politics (talk) 17:38, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Removing not winning also removes the superfluous addition of winner being added, which is wholly unnecessary. Sport and politics (talk) 17:44, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

  • The answer is yes. It is very easy to go and find other articles that have runner-up positions in the honor's list; in fact, it's generally standard practice to do so. However, the way it was done on this article does not appear to be the standard way of doing things. The way I believe is the standard way can be observed on Zinedine Zidane, in the following manner;
  • "Serie A: 1996–97, 1997–98; Runner-up: 1999–00, 2000–01"
  • Whilst not perfect, it gets rid of the winner text, and finishing second in something can easily be considered an honour. Would it be an honour to be runner-up in Player of the Year? Yes, absolutely it would. Your comment about losing is irrelevant, and technically, if a match is won on penalties, it is statistically a draw - so no-one has lost or won. Perhaps "honour" is not the best title for these sections... but I am firmly of the opinion that finishing second (which is not simply "losing") is noteworthy. I'm afraid your viewpoint, although understandable, is also against common consensus... and I also vaguely remember an editor in the past getting blocked indefinitely for edit-warring over this sort of thing, and socking to try and carry it on. That's not insinuating you are them, just a warning about your behaviour so far. Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 18:39, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

US Open stats

Hi everyone! Could someone please point me to where Henry's US Open stats, that is: the Cup stats from his New York stint, are from? None of the listed references mention any. I am currently editing the stats table for another player who has played in the MLS and I haven't been able to find a source listing US Open stats. Regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 00:56, 14 December 2015 (UTC)

I don't think he ever played in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Stats from his soccerway don't say he did at least and soccerway is very good at providing US Open Cup stats for players. --ArsenalFan700 (talk) 05:14, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. That's odd. The table's stats and, even more so, its notes suggests he was involved in U.S. Open Cup (and MLS Cup Playoffs) matches. Robby.is.on (talk) 00:39, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Lede

The lede has clearly been written year by year, with little thought to actual structure, just layering more stuff on top of others. I have gone back to 2012 and can see it used to have a proper structure but at some point has been recomposed and added to before this edit tried to tidy everything up. However all it did was removed the last remaining structure already eroded by several years editing and cross-editing. I have looked at several other lede's such as Didier Deschamps, Jurgen Klinsmann, Ronaldo, Hristo Stoichkov and attempted to re-align the entire structure to more logically reflect importance and notability. Koncorde (talk) 13:54, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

The opening para summed up his position, current employment, clubs and national team he played for and record for both, without going into any detail. The next three then cover his club followed by his international career with statistics. The drastic rewrite is all over the place chronologically, and is a mismash of his club and international career. Then there's "forward for several clubs", and the clunky sentences that go on and on. Carlos Rojas77 (talk) 18:00, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
1 chronology is not a feature of a lede. Notability and importance is the critical factor. 2 opening paragraph summarising the content of the lede is not a standard for opening paragraph. 3. The language, terminology and sentences used are all standard English. If there is something particularly clunky, fix the phrase. 4. You also keep reintroducing factual errors and spelling mistakes.
You may not like WP:BOLD but unwillingness to engage in editing to improve the existing article without recognising the blatant errors is not helping. Reverting contributions wholesale is not how editing works. Koncorde (talk) 17:44, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
Your edit started off by stating he was a forward for several clubs. That's inaccurate. He was a forward. That it's. Notability and importance is just what the first para achieves; his occupation, position, current employment. Then his clubs and national team, and being the record goalscorer. The rest then goes into detail (how long he stayed at each club, goal statistics, awards), with the same done with his national career. It then ends with detail of his current employment. Anyone reading it will clearly get an instant understanding of the subject. Carlos Rojas77 (talk) 21:23, 6 October 2016 (UTC)

In the box on the right hand side, showing Thierry Henry's career stats(underneath the picture) it says (2012 - Arsenal(loan) Apps: 4 Gls: 1) Shouldn't the Gls here say 2, considering he score twice upon his return, which the wiki article actually states further down under the "Return to Arsenal" heading.
