Invitation to HWY Cup

Hi Tomobe03,

As someone who has previously worked on road articles, you may be interested in participating in the 2014 HWY Cup (a similar concept to WP:WikiCup, but for road and highway articles). The exact rules are not yet determined, but will include points for article improvements such as expanding stubs. If you think you might be interested, you should signup at User:TCN7JM/HWY Cup 2014. Greetings!

Below are the suggestions you made during your Good article review of the Mahan-class destroyer on 28 November 2013.

“While the table in the "Ships in class" section is referenced just fine (no action required), I'd suggest adding another column to the table named "Source" and moving references to that column (only reference). That would reduce clutter since each field in every row is referenced to the same document. I'd also suggest prevent wrapping of dates and hull numbers in the table by adding nowrap=yes parameter to one field in each column (one with the longest text, of course).”

  • I added a Source column to the chart, and moved the references to this column.
  • As for the wrapping of dates and hulls numbers, I’m still stumbling around with it. Would you have time to give me a tutorial on the subject, or refer me to some Wikipedia instructions?

Thank you. Pendright (talk) 01:53, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Copyedit request

hello!

I have a question. I came across this sentence during my copy edit

By the end of September, Croatian defensive positions around Otočac were shored up, allowing minor attacks—largely in area of village of Drenov Klanac

I'm not entirely sure what meaning was being attempted here. Is it meant to imply that

  1. the defensive positions were shored up thus only allowing attacks to get through? or
  2. the defensive positions were shored up and used as staging posts for minor attacks?
  3. some other meaning.

Thanks for clarifying this. Blackmane (talk) 16:47, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Hm, "allowing" is completely misused here. I meant to say the defensive positions were reinforced or otherwise improved but the opposing force launched only minor attacks (i.e. no major offensive) in the area specified. Thanks for pointing this out as well as for all the copyedits.--Tomobe03 (talk) 19:58, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
I see! Well, that's all cleared up. I'll finish that last edit up and that'll be the copyedit done. If you don't mind having a read through, that would be much appreciated. Blackmane (talk) 21:00, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
I read the article once again, and fixed one issue. No qualms otherwise. Cheers--Tomobe03 (talk) 22:38, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
I've closed the request at WP:GOCE. As a suggestion, you may wish to have a GA reviewer look over it again. I'll go and tidy up the tags on the article. Blackmane (talk) 15:16, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Um, still can't find (or derive) the figure from the content there... GregorB (talk) 09:58, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
Just take a look at table 2-2 (Counties, surface area, population, towns, municipalities and settlements), and then some math is required to calculate 641/56594=1.1%. Mind you p56 of the yearbook itself is p58 of the PDF.--Tomobe03 (talk) 10:12, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
Aargh, thanks, I misunderstood the sentence - it refers to Zagreb only, not to total city-administered area of Croatia. GregorB (talk) 13:21, 18 February 2014 (UTC)

Advice

I need a bit of advice regarding a list I started on my sandbox page. The plan is to list every ship that was in service with the JRM (planning on doing the same for the HRM). I was wondering, would it be better if I continued as started, using a ref right next to the claim, or should I just create a new column at the end and "gather" all the refs of that particular class in one place?--Saxum (talk) 15:26, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

If a single reference covers all items contained in a table, it may be placed next to table caption or in the final row after an introductory line such as "Source: XYZ". If a single reference covers all items in a given column/row, it may be placed next to the specific column/row header. Failing either of those, I'd place one ref next to each claim. There are alternative solutions, such as a "Sources" column, but I'm not too fond of those.--Tomobe03 (talk) 15:34, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Re: Curiosity

Alas, not really related to tabs... I've been trying to make the section headers look less atrocious, but this seems to be unusually difficult to achieve.

In a way, it is related to tabs in a sense that the current layout can't be salvaged, so tabbed layout seems inevitable. Hell, I could have been almost finished with it by now, given the time I wasted on tweaking. :-P GregorB (talk) 14:07, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Is it close to working? GregorB (talk) 14:37, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Yes, the basic setup is simple enough. However, it is difficult to make it work big-bang-style, due to a large number of related subpages. Maybe there is a way to introduce it gradually, using a "hybrid" design before everything is finished... GregorB (talk) 15:03, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Absolutely, great artists steal. :-) There's also WP:GA, for example. Didn't study how it works, but it doesn't really matter - we should simply adopt whatever works best. GregorB (talk) 15:36, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
Of course, why not? I'll take a closer look and see what might work for us. GregorB (talk) 16:04, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
This is the list of all subpages. Basically they all fall into one of four categories:
  • Tabs
  • Subpages (should merely be linked to from somewhere)
  • Zagreb TF
  • Obsolete, unused and miscellaneous stuff
I'll get back to you with a more concrete suggestion regarding the layout. GregorB (talk) 00:01, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

GOCE Requests

Hi Tomobe03, I've removed your copy-edit request for Battle of the Dalmatian Channels here because you already have two requests pending. We have a maximum of two requests per editor at any one time, which was changed on March 16 to help reduce our backlog of requests. Please feel free to re-add the request once one of your requests has been fulfilled. Sorry for any inconvenience and thanks for your understanding. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 00:28, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

No sweat. The last limit I remembered was three articles per editor and I missed that last change. I thought the queue was unusually short though :) I'll simply repost the request later on, cheers!--Tomobe03 (talk) 08:12, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Tab layout

Here is how I see it...

There are only six "important" sections:

  • Announcements
  • Article alerts
  • Assessment
  • Participants
  • Recent Articles
  • To Do List

The rest is static, non-essential, and can be dealt with later.

Your layout envisions five tabs:

  • Main page = Present main page minus non-essential stuff
  • Discussion = Simply a link to the talk page
  • News & open tasks = Announcements, Article alerts, To Do List (is this too busy for a single tab?)
  • Assessment = Assessment section (subpage)
  • Participants = Participants section (subpage)

"Non-essential stuff" for the main page is certainly Participants, very likely To Do List.

The gradualist approach would be:

  1. Introduce tabs (not necessarily all of them at once)
  2. Tweak the subpages while moving/retiring content from the main page
  3. Iterate #2 until we have a satisfactory design

Not that easy to do, but there are no deadlines either. I'd be willing to participate. GregorB (talk) 14:15, 16 April 2014 (UTC)

Citation

Just one question regarding citing something in this list im working on. I stumbled upon this old newspaper article. As you can see the interview was published in Slobodna Dalmacija with a date in the upper right corner. Whats not known is the author and is this a regular article in SD or a special subsection. With this in mind i'm not sure if it's good enough to be used as a source? --Saxum (talk) 18:06, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

I don't see anything wrong with the source, author names are not always included in newspaper articles for one reason or another. Furthermore, there's nothing to indicate that the article was published in anything other than a regular issue of SD. If I were you, I'd use the source and cite it as:
  • "I mi smo Mornarica". Slobodna Dalmacija (in Croatian). 12 March 1988. {{cite news}}: Unknown parameter |trans_title= ignored (|trans-title= suggested) (help)

Re: Whats new

Excellent stuff. I thought having three large sections in this page may be too much, but it doesn't appear so.

Assessment and Participants should be easy to do, and this one was probably not that hard either...

I'm all for recognized content; I didn't know there was a way to have it maintained by a bot - that's even better.

Happy holidays to you too Tomobe ! GregorB (talk) 11:47, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Bold is the word! :-) Very nice - I hope feedback will be positive. GregorB (talk) 00:37, 21 April 2014 (UTC)
You know, back in the day I did some web design (or development, rather). Maybe you have similar experiences; if not, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to get an unanimously positive feedback when redesigning a website. No matter how retarded the old design was, some people will always think it's better. Even if the new design were able to materialize naked hookers bringing in bags of money into one's living room, some people would still be unhappy with it. :-D That being said, I can only agree with you here. :-) GregorB (talk) 00:48, 21 April 2014 (UTC)

Zagreb population

Can you tell me why you reverted my edit?Where in the link is mentioned 688 000?Can you please tell me because i don't see it.I just see 790 000 number.Thank you. Also in the text above populations it says like this:"Ten municipalities where the city is situated have combined population of 1,283,783 as suburban settlements are added, while the Belgrade metropolitan area encompasses population of 1,639,121.[53] Zagreb is the second largest city on the river, comprising population of 688,163 living in the city itself, and 790,017 in the city-administered area.[54] Together with the Zagreb County, largely corresponding to various definitions of the city's metropolitan area,[55] it has a combined population of 1,110,517.[54].But for Belgrade under Municipal population the number is from it's Metropolitan population.Andunder Zagreb municipal population or Metro population the number is just from City of Zagreb population not it's Metro poulation. The numbers are not correct. So i will put the number as they are in the text above. No double standards.Cheers Scrosby85 (talk) 23:35, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

City of Zagreb has a population of 790 000..Metro has over 1 mil...How can then be that Belgrade Municipality has 1.7 mil?It is a bit unrealistic compared to Zagreb. It turns out that Belgrade has 1 mil more people than Zagreb. That is not the case..Belgrade Metro or District has 1.65 mil not Municipality. If you would like to change that once again you can put 688 000 people just for Urban but 1 110 000 for Municipality.Like Belgrade has but that is a population of it's Metro not Municipality. Scrosby85 (talk) 17:19, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

I'm not increasing numbers just because it seems like Belgrade have 1 mil more population than Zagreb.I'm just adding numbers which are quoted in the text above...Because number under Belgrade is his Metro area not Municipality..Like quoted in that text "while the Belgrade metropolitan area encompasses population of 1,639,121.[53]"...You get what i want to say? Scrosby85 (talk) 22:56, 23 April 2014 (UTC)

I asked you to show me where in the source is Belgrade municipal population,Metro population and District population.I think you also don't know what are you trying to say here.In this case Municipal population of Belgrade is bigger than Metro population..But Municipal population is not Metro population because it is 20 000 difference.Where is the logic? What qualify under Urban,Municipality,County,Metro..You can define it how you want it. Scrosby85 (talk) 00:40, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

I did not say that sources are wrong..I just asked you where in that sources is pointed what is the population of Municipality,of Metro and Cities itself. Scrosby85 (talk) 22:59, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Well, normally I'd be quite interested, but for me it would be difficult not to use the access granted to me knowing that someone else could have got it had I not applied. Article name(s)

I have a question regarding the names of navy related articles. I'm familiar that ship classes are written with cursive follwed by a dash and a short explanation, for instance, Una-class submarine, but what if the class doesn't have a name, but rather just a designation such as "Type 132" (a class of Yugoslav patrol boats). Do I just go with "Type-132 patrol boat", "Type 132-class patrol boat", or something third?--Saxum (talk) 13:30, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ships)#Ships with hull number only has some info on numbered ship names, but I'm not quite sure what it means - if it were "T132", the title would be written as T132, but I'm not at all sure about "type" here. In that respect, perhaps it would be the best to ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history. As a side note, are you sure the Type 132 ship has no NATO designated name? For instance Project 641 soviet subs are presented here as Foxtrot-class submarine. I have no clue if the Type 132 had a NATO name or not, but it is not entirely possible. I'm sorry I was not of more help. Cheers.--Tomobe03 (talk) 19:35, 18 June 2014 (UTC)

10th century counties map

Have you done this map: Croatia Counties 10th century? I think that Lika, Krbava and Gacka should also be added to it. They were under the rule of a ban, but also a part of Croatia. Ferdo Šišić placed them like this: "gatska sa središtem oko današnjega Otočca; lička sa središtem oko današnjega Počitelja; krbavska sa središtem u gradu Krbavi {danas Udbina)", and this is a map from Ivo Goldstein and how he positioned them [[2]] (Rani hrvatski srednji vijek, p. 154). He also switched the positions of counties "Nina" and "Nona", although Šišić and some others place both like you did.Tzowu (talk) 18:03, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip and the source. I'll add those as soon as I manage some time to tweak the map and the accompanying text. Cheers--Tomobe03 (talk) 10:33, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

MiGs in Croatia

Hi. I have plans for writing an article about MiG-21s in service with the Croatian Air Force so I was wondering what would be the appropriate name: MiG-21 in service with the Croatian Air Force and Air Defense or simply MiG-21 in Croatian service? I also hope such and article would meet Wikipedia's notability guidlines because I believe there is plenty of info to be written and the existing articles (Croatian Air Force and MiG-21 operators) would be derailed if I packed them with detailed info regarding the recent crashes and overhauls in Ukraine.--Saxum (talk) 19:06, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

As long as it meets WP:GNG, I see no problem with any topic at all. I presume a correct title would be "MiG-21 in the Croatian Air Force and Air Defence", though there are other options too. I am aware that there is/was no other combat aircraft (at least no jets) in CAF service, but later on (presumably) topic scopes such as Tanks in the Australian Army - focusing on a weapon type rather than exact model might be worth exploring. At any rate, I like your idea. Cheers.--Tomobe03 (talk) 23:02, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Photos

Hi again. I have a question regarding some photos I would like to use in my article about Croatian MiGs. Commons has a lot of photos of the Croatian aircraft, but unfortunatelly, these are all older photos with none of them being from Ukraine. The only relatively non-private source of these photos is the site of the Croatian MoD. You can see the licence at the bottom of the page. I'm not an expert on the topic so I'm not sure if I could upload the photos (one or two) on Wiki and if so, what licence to use on them?--Saxum (talk) 11:43, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

I'm not sure really. At any rate, the images should be uploaded at the Wikimedia Commons provided they are free. The permission provided at the MoD site indeed seems to provide sufficient background for use under CC-BY-2.0 licence (Template:Cc-by-2.0) or maybe CC-BY-3.0 (Template:Cc-by-3.0-hr). I suggest you to check at the Commons or at WP:MILHIST talk page though.--Tomobe03 (talk) 17:17, 23 August 2014 (UTC)

Blanking of Operation Flash

Hi Tomobe03. You recently reverted a near total balnking of Operation Flash. Did you happen to notice the nature of the content that was blanked? I didn't get that impression. If the blanking was intentional (I did not explore the IP's editing elsewhere) it better resembles random vandalism.--Tomobe03 (talk) 19:54, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Vukovar massacre, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Operation. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Prijedlog i zamolba

Pozdrav, Tomobe03. I sretan ti 1. maj!--Seiya (talk) 12:55, 1 May 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Editor of the Week : nominations needed!

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:09, 7 November 2016 (UTC)

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Bombardment of Dubrovnik Croatia by Yugoslav Peoples Army on 6 December 1991.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Bombardment of Dubrovnik Croatia by Yugoslav Peoples Army on 6 December 1991.jpg. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Tito–Stalin split, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page National Liberation Movement. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

The article Tito–Stalin split you nominated as a good article has passed  ; see Talk:Tito–Stalin split for comments about the article. Well done! If the article has not already appeared on the main page as a "Did you know" item, or as a bold link under "In the News" or in the "On This Day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear in DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On This Day" column do not affect DYK eligibility.
