Ziphosuchia
editDon't revert it yet: according to Turner and Sertich (2010) [who specifically used the clade name "Ziphosuchia" without changing its definition] Ziphosuchia is a subclade of Notosuchia. As its wikipage points out Ziphosuchia is defined to include Notosuchus, Libycosuchus, and Sebecosuchia. Turner and Sertich followed "an amended definition given by Carvalho et al. (2004), with Ziphosuchia defined as the most recent common ancestor of Notosuchus terrestris, Libycosuchus brevirostris, and Baurusuchus pachecoi" {from T&S2010}. Notosuchia is a stem-based clade (Notosuchus > Crocodylus), and therefore only if Baurusuchus and/or Libycosuchus are found out to be closer to Crocodylus, Ziphosuchia will include Notosuchia. This result is quite rare these days :) Rnnsh (talk) 19:14, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- Than never mind me, too... ;) 19:18, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yeay, that one is really confusing, but for now I think it should stay.. T&S 2010 used Sebecosuchia to include Baurusuchus and Sebecia (a funny thing for sure) without defining it, pending a coming soon revision... In the paper of Caipirasuchus, the authors used Sebecia to incuded Sebecidae and more basal forms, again, without defining it... Rnnsh (talk) 19:37, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- Already did that: Notosuchia Rnnsh (talk) 19:47, 20 November 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I know. And there is more to come: NEW REMAINS OF MIADANASUCHUS OBLITA FROM THE LATE CRETACEOUS OF MADAGASCAR AND A REEVALUATION OF TREMATOCHAMPSIDAE (SVP 2011) I can't wait to see that paper!
- Already did that: Notosuchia Rnnsh (talk) 19:47, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

Subfossil lemurs (and your latest work)
editI just saw your latest piece of work: Purlovia maxima. Very nice! Anyway, Ucucha and I are about to re-write Pachylemur. We have a picture of a skull, and I can point you to a reconstruction from the latest edition of Lemurs of Madagascar. If I can arrange support from Dr. Godfrey, would you be up for it? We plan to work on re-writing the article this coming week, in preparation for DYK. If you don't have time, just say. – VisionHolder « talk » 10:29, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's been a while since I've worked on lemurs, and I'd love to give Pachylemur a try. I'm going to be a little busy for the next few days, but I should have more time over the weekend. Smokeybjb (talk) 03:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- Excellent! Let me see if I can get in touch with Dr. Godfrey and get you more than just a picture of a skull. At the very least, a portrait of it's face based on the skull and Nash's Lemurs of Madagascar drawing would be nice. If we do a body shot, I would like to capture it's suspensory behavior, as seen here in one of its living relatives. – VisionHolder « talk » 04:18, 10 January 2012 (UTC)
- Sounds good, that pose looks great! Smokeybjb (talk) 04:19, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

- Alright... when you are ready, email me through Wikipedia and I will send you a photo of a full skeleton (probably with inaccurate posture, but good for proportions) as well as Stephen Nash's most recent reconstruction (done in collaboration with Dr. Godfrey and other experts). I would email you directly, but I'm having a hard time finding your email address. – VisionHolder « talk » 21:19, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Also, I don't know if you want to dare it, but I plan to re-write the aye-aye article soon, and I would love to have a life reconstruction of a giant aye-aye. I don't know if you're up for that. The trick is that no one has attempted to draw one, and no skulls have been found. (Basically, it sounds like an over-sized aye-aye, roughly 5 times more massive.) It would be a true adventure, but I'm sure Dr. Godfrey can help you make a guess.... if you're up for it. – VisionHolder « talk » 06:49, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

However, as you said it is implied by the -inae suffix, so I think it sould be considered a subfamily or Desmatosuchinae shouldn't be cosidered a subfamily, too. Nordenosaurus the 'gator(oid)
editHello, Smokeybjb;
I was wondering if you could tell me where Nordenosaurus was described as an alligatoroid. It hasn't made it to the Paleobiology Database, but I can tell from Googling sideways that either Gauthier (1982) (Fossil xenosaurid and anguid lizards from the early Eocene of Wyoming, and a revision of the Anguioidea. Contributions to Geology, University of Wyoming 21: 7-54.) or Estes (1983) (Sauria terrestria, Amphisbaenia. Handbuch der Paläoherpetologie 10A:1-249), or both, have something to do with it. J. Spencer (talk) 22:25, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'll have to remember to have a peek at the Handbuch next time I can find one (hopefully, it's one of the volumes that are in English and not German). J. Spencer (talk) 01:41, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Template:Mesoeucrocodylia and some categories
editHi again! I would like to consult you about some things:
- Template:Mesoeucrocodylia - I think this template isn't so good and it's confusing. There are different definitions for Mesoeucrocodylia so the template is unstable and it includes Notosuchia (which has a template). I suggest to open a template for Neosuchia and redirect Template:Mesoeucrocodylia to Template:Basal crocodylomorphs.
- The list of genera in the Notosuchia page is long but incomplete, and I don't know what to do about it (to add more taxa or to divide it...)
- The categories Terrestrial crocodiles and Marine crocodiles are mostly used for taxa that are not "crocodiles", so maybe we should rename them?
What do you think about my suggestions? Thank you! Rnnsh (talk) 16:40, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I agree, however there is one thing: maybe it will be better to use the name "Category:Aquatic crocodylomorphs" since taxa like Pholidosaurus, Sarcosuchus, Elosuchus and Meridiosaurus were freshwater forms, but not marine. (Forteir et al., 2011) Rnnsh (talk) 10:10, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, I think we should open three categories.. Rnnsh (talk) 18:23, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks! Now should I delete the list and create the tamplate? Rnnsh (talk) 19:43, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
- I think I have just realized something about Anteophthalmosuchus hooleyi and Goniopholis willetti, from Andrade et al. (2011) - there were Hooleyi's Goniopholididae indet and Hulke's Goniopholididae indet (="Mr Willett's crocodilian skull"), that with Dollo's Goniopholididae indet clade together near Goniopholis. Is it helpful? Rnnsh (talk) 18:26, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I don't have access to any of those, and although there's lots of information in Andrade et al. about them, I don't know if its ok to use this info until we will know for sure that A. hooleyi and G. willetti are Hooleyi's Goniopholididae indet and Hulke's Goniopholididae indet...
And thank you about the tamplate! Rnnsh (talk) 06:22, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

In The Meantime
editFirst thing's first, I want to congratulate you for the splendid job you've been doing creating that Placodermi template, and working on all those cladograms. Second, I was wondering if you know of a cladogram for Aspinothoracidi. I do know that, since the separation of Dinichthyidae from Dunkleosteidae, some of the genera mentioned in Apinothoracidi were deemed basal pachyosteomorphs, and others relegated to Dunkleosteidae, and a couple were banished to Newark, but, I keep forgetting which is where.--Mr Fink (talk) 22:42, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
- Well, at the very least, we should modify the Dunkleosteidae template.--Mr Fink (talk) 05:36, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- As far as I know, those were the only genera Hlarr et al directly said as belonging to Dunkleosteidae. We could try combing scholar.google to see if any new stuff has come up for Aspinothoracida.--Mr Fink (talk) 18:15, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Amniote Taxonomy
editI have reverted your edit to the page Template:Taxonomy/Amniota, for the reason given in my edit summary. If you disagree with me pleas reply here, on my talk page or at the templit's talk page (Template talk: Taxonomy/ Amniota).Aliafroz1901 (talk) 10:04, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for the note, I've reverted myself. By the way shall I rank Amniota as unranked seing as clade is not a rank. The reason why I am writeing this rather then makeing the change is that I am not shure whether it would be WP:synt or not.Aliafroz1901 (talk) 15:43, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Hy Smokeybjb the mane problem with your argument is that clade is not a rank. About the parents if other groups are ranked as clades then their ranks should be changed to unranked as well. Looking at these taxoboxs makes me think that people are beginning to think that clade is the same as unranked, when it is not so (as I staded in my edit summary clade is a turm for cledisticly valid groups and thus not a rank). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aliafroz1901 (talk • contribs) 16:03, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Hm the enstructions are pretty strange and I am still not satisfyed, you see ranking a group such as eugnathostomata as a clade and then ranking some thing like Amniota as a clade makes it very confuseing for the genrel reder while unranked is english and thus is understandable. About Amphibia sensu lato, your reasoneing is incorrect in that you ar asumeing that the reder will clik on the link when very fue or no reders will clik on the link. asume that a reder has red a croun group definition for amphibia and the reder thinks that the sensu lato was aded just like that, isn't the reder going to be teribly misled.Aliafroz1901 (talk) 16:58, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Smokeybjb wikipedia is written for the genrel reder not for the experts so even though sensu lato has an exact definition we still need to give its mening. And linking is, especially in this case a very Inefficient compromise for defining. in other cases like Gnathostomata the reder knows nothing about it so is more likely to clik on the link, but every body knows about amphibia and even if the sensu lato catchs their atention the link simply takes them to the amphibia article and the title makes them think that the article contains no information about sensu lato. Either define amphibia sensu lato (the better option) or create a new article for amphibia sensu lato.Aliafroz1901 (talk) 15:52, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Hy I didn't know that you had linked amphibia sensu lato to the classification section of the article but plese be avare that some times links to sections of articles do not bring the clicker to the section instead bringing the clicker to the article's hedding (it has hapined a few times with me, I don't know the exact reason).Aliafroz1901 (talk) 16:34, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Good idea, I'll change it to "Amphibia (in the wide sense)".Aliafroz1901 (talk) 15:27, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

DYK for Cryobatrachus
editOn 9 August 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Cryobatrachus, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the extinct amphibian Cryobatrachus (restoration pictured) was discovered in the Transantarctic Mountains of Antarctica? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cryobatrachus. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Navbox for early amphibians
editHi!
I see you have put in a very nice navbox for the early amphibians. There's one problem with it though. It uses the term "Stem tetrapods" (linking to Stem Tetrapoda). Due to the extreme instability of the basal tetrapod tree, this unit is practically useless. The only thing we know belongs in there are the Ichthyostegalia and a whole lot of fishes (Rhizodontidae, Canowindridae, Megalichthyidae, Osteolepidae and the Elpistostegalia), but from there on the scientific consensus brakes down. On one extreme end the above would be it, on the other, all labyrinthodnts save Diadectomorpha and Lepospondyli should be included. I suggest sticking to the more well understood traditional units (Temnospondyls, Lepospondyls, Reptiliomorpha etc) and drop the stem group system here. Dimetrodon review
editLet me know when you are ready for me to resume the review of Dimetrodon. There was a lot of lengthy discussion that I haven't had time to follow closely, plus you were talking about reorganizing the article. I don't mind keeping things on hold, but I would like to wrap things up relatively soon. If needed, we can always fail it and you can notify me when you're ready to nominate it again. I would be more than happy to do a second review if you took that route. – Maky « talk » 06:13, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
- There's been a lot of tweaking and reorganizing with some not very major problems left to fix, so I think it will be ready soon. Some Manda Beds taxa
editHi Smokeybjb,
I'm not sure where some Manda Beds taxa should be mentioned (in the Paleobiota section). I thought that Stanocephalosaurus pronus is known only from its holotype, UMZC T.288, a partial skull from Ntawere Formation. Am I missing a referred specimen or is it just a mistake? Additionally, is Stenaulorhynchus major valid? According to the Paleobiology Database it is known from two specimens from Manda Beds. From Lautenschlager and Desojo (2011): "Von Huene (1939) noted that the distal element {type of S. major} is nearly indistinguishable in size and shape from the humerus of Stagonosuchus nyassicus, which originated from the same locality and level, and attributed the fragmentary left humerus also to Stagonosuchus nyassicus." However, it's not very clear what they think about this synonymy, and it's problematic as S. nyassicus was named in 1938 but S. major in 1932. And there is also Stagonosuchus tanganyikaensis (SAM 11754) - Lautenschlager and Desojo (2011) wrote: "... Based on these differences, we do not refer SAM 11754 to Stagonosuchus", and suggested that it might represent a rhynchosaur...
Thanks, Rnnsh (talk) 20:25, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
- But Stanocephalosaurus/Eryosuchus pronus came from the Ntawere Formation, right? And thanks for the explanation about S. major two specimens, because only paleodb mentioned a second one... Also, should we list S. tanganyikaensis in the rhynchosaur table? Rnnsh (talk) 17:32, 5 October 2013 (UTC)
Templates not expanded by default
editHi, have put a statement on a template talk page. There are 3 settings - collapsed, expanded, and expanded if template is alone. This last one is the correct one in most cases as it prevents sprawl when as with this template it can have neighbours. Would appreciate a resolution as having it expanded all the time is very inconvenient. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 06:39, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Question About Your Photo
editFor your photo of the fossil of Pteraspis crouchi, is it a distinct species from Belgicaspis crouchi?--Mr Fink (talk) 21:01, 7 September 2014 (UTC)
- The label said "Pteraspis crouchi", but maybe the museum was going off outdated information. A quick google search makes me suspect it was reclassified as a species of Belgicaspis sometime in the 1960s. Smokeybjb (talk) 20:34, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
