WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  •   Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  •   Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  •   SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. NadirAli

I see that since I blocked NadirAli a few days ago you've been going around systematically undoing their contributions, under a false pretense of ban evasion. The edits you have reverted are in violation of no ban, and your sudden pursuit of the blocked user in topics you have never edited constitutes harassment. Please take this opportunity to restore all of NadirAli's content that you have inappropriately removed. Thank you. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 14:52, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

Ivanvector, I don't think I've inappropriately reverted any of his edits thus far—but if you think otherwise, you should cite the specific diffs. And it seems to me that you jumped the gun here, and of course completely disregarded the fact that I had self reverted the edit quickly after realizing that my initial revert was inaccurate. In my next edit, I provided a valid rationale that I was reverting because of overtagging issue, which you seem to have overlooked. This has been a long term problem, in case you haven't checked his talk page. I will consider self reverting only if you provide valid reasons that the revert was incorrect. WP:CANVAS

The user in question has been indef'd for "proxy editing". The comment, too, has been removed by an editor per WP:DWS. Points noted. MBlaze Lightning talk 03:36, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

This removal was not appropriate. First, that is not a violation of WP:CANVAS, as the guideline applies to discussions requiring consensus. SPI does not require consensus. CUs and admins take whatever decisions are necessary. If other users provide useful evidence, it is taken into account; if users engage in mudslinging, it is ignored or sanctioned. As such other users cannot influence the outcome, and so requesting participation is okay. Second, WP:TPO gives editors limited latitude to edit others' talk page comments. Removing supposed canvassing is not covered there; the guideline explicitly says that "Posts that may be considered disruptive in various ways are another borderline case and are usually best left as-is or archived." Please don't repeat your removal, and remember that removing this message is considered evidence of having read it. Vanamonde (talk) 18:17, 11 August 2018 (UTC)

You are wrong. The message that مھتاب احمد left on Elephanthunter's talk page was inappropriate, because he selectively notified only him and in full awareness of his disputes with the reported editor, with an obvious motive. Such notifications are considered inappropriate and disruptive, just as the policy says: Inappropriate notification is generally considered to be disruptive. Canvassing normally involves the posting of messages. It is not necessarily limited to "discussions requiring consensus". While other editors do have the privilege to comment on that SPI report; مھتاب احمد was clearly exploiting that privilege by selectively canvassing editors of his own choice.
On a side note, what you are doing is called WP:WIKIHOUNDING; and for your own sake, I'd suggest you lay off it. Both the editors in question were perfectly capable of restoring that message, but you clearly learned about this incident from my talk page and jumped there without any prior history. MBlaze Lightning talk 18:51, 11 August 2018 (UTC)
MBlaze Lightning, Vanamonde is correct, canvassing is not one of the approved reasons to remove comments from other user's talk pages. Vanamonde's edit restored information that you were trying to obscure, and I appreciate that. Your accusation to Vanamonde is strange considering the circumstances. How did you come across User:مھتاب_احمد's comment? You have never made a post on my talk page before. It looks like you reviewed that user's edit history to revert their comment. And that is clear WP:WIKIHOUNDING. If you are following other user's edits to harass or otherwise undermine them, that needs to stop. --Elephanthunter (talk) 00:21, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
It has not been said anywhere that messages that constitute canvassing are not allowed to be removed. It seems you agree that the user was canvassing you after all. On a side note, you are really late since you posted this message after مھتاب احمد was already indef'd. Cheers. MBlaze Lightning talk 04:43, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
"It has not been said... that... canvassing are not allowed to be removed"? That is not ar argument! We shouldn't be deleting posts by default, unless they are allowed by policy. Sure, that post was canvassing, garden variety misconduct. It is not offensive to anybody or damaging to Wikipedia in any way. No need to remove it. I think you need to review your understanding of what can be removed by policy and stick to it. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 09:06, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
I note that you agree that the "post was canvassing"; however, you also say, "it is not offensive to anybody or damaging to Wikipedia in any way". I beg to disagree with you on that point. Like I said, Mehtab was assuming bad faith by selectively notifying an editor, who, he was convinced, must have a grudge against the reported editor. Now, this is something that needs to be frowned upon, in my opinion. But I do note your point, and that our current guidelines are vague at best when it comes to cases like this. Have a good day. MBlaze Lightning talk 10:43, 12 August 2018 (UTC)
Actually, telling editors about their misunderstandings of policy is not wikihounding, and if you think otherwise, please take the discussion to AN. I have not said at any point that the notification you removed was appropriate; I have said it would have no effect, something which you seem unable to understand. Your removal too had no effect, as an editor still sees a notification of having received a message. You removed another editor's talk page comment in a circumstance not explicitly provided for by WP:TPO; if you still think that's okay, I'm sure you can find other administrators willing to back you up. Vanamonde (talk) 17:05, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

To enforce an arbitration decision and for your participation at this ANI thread. This editor is heavily involved in the topic area that you are banned from, and your participation there is clearly related to that topic area., you have been blocked from editing for a period of 72 hours. You are welcome to edit once the block expires; however, please note that the repetition of similar behavior may result in a longer block or other sanctions.

If you believe this block is unjustified, please read the guide to appealing blocks (specifically this section) before appealing. Place the following on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Please copy my appeal to the [[WP:AE|arbitration enforcement noticeboard]] or [[WP:AN|administrators' noticeboard]]. Your reason here OR place the reason below this template. ~~~~}}. If you intend to appeal on the arbitration enforcement noticeboard I suggest you use the arbitration enforcement appeals template on your talk page so it can be copied over easily. You may also appeal directly to me (by email), before or instead of appealing on your talk page. ~ Rob13Talk 18:30, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Reminder to administrators: In May 2014, ArbCom adopted the following procedure instructing administrators regarding Arbitration Enforcement blocks: "No administrator may modify a sanction placed by another administrator without: (1) the explicit prior affirmative consent of the enforcing administrator; or (2) prior affirmative agreement for the modification at (a) AE or (b) AN or (c) ARCA (see "Important notes" [in the procedure]). Administrators modifying sanctions out of process may at the discretion of the committee be desysopped."

Please see what I wrote at User_talk:SheriffIsInTown#August_2018 about the nature of this dispute and the fact that it must stop. I'll extend the same basic offer to you; if I have your guarantee that this is the end of your participation in the ongoing dispute involving all the other editors topic banned along with you, I will lift the block.
