Page move

I noticed you were trying to move Juan Vasquez (composer) to Juan Vásquez. Since there was already content at the destination article, the Wiki software won't allow the move to proceed. I've placed a speedy deletion tag on Juan Vásquez to clear the way; once an admin deletes this article, you can move the original article there using the move tab along the top of the page. I have a sneaking suspicion that Jacob de Reis (c. 1540 – c. 1605) (in the "Unknown nationality" section) may be the same person as Jakub Polak (c. 1545 – 1605) ("Polish" section)...? --MrOzik 14:06, 3 August 2007 (UTC)

Roles

We usually start with a list like that in La scuola de' gelosi - which is formatted correctly IMO - and then make tables later to accommodate the role creators, as for example the other Falstaff - so i guess my answer would be that tables are great but really we need the names of the role creators as well. -- Kleinzach 14:59, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

I copied that outline from the Dutoit recording. I've also got Gardiner's recording, which can be programmed to play just about any version of the symphony ever devised, but I thought I'd add the straightforward, most frequently performed one first. Glad to see someone else is working on Berlioz too. I had planned to deal with all his works in detail, but I got distracted. I haven't managed to find that information about Wagner in Cairns yet, but he has more about the composition history (R&J was finished on September 8, 1839) and plenty about the critical reaction. Also, MacDonald confirms that it is in seven movements. Maybe I'll add some of this material once you've finished. --Folantin 10:35, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

The Berlioz biography is another article I promised to fix. I was planning to re-read Cairns (a great book) but I blanched at going through all 1000+ pages. The Classical Project isn't dead, it's merely playing possum :) (it does tend to be one of the sleepier projects). I've just moved the Symphonie fantastique article myself to the correct spelling. I agree with you about "Harold" (plus I think it should be La damnation de Faust rather than the English title). Those moves might cause more controversy so it might be best to put in a requested move for them. I'll see if I can fix that a little later, unless you want to go ahead yourself. Really thorough work on the bio, by the way. I can't think of anything to add there, except his parents' names and the fact he first met Mendelssohn during his stay in Italy (I can fix that - with references - myself). If you don't mind, I'd like to rewrite the "Style" section (there is a good chapter in MacDonald I can use). Also, I've never been keen on that introduction so I might try to rejig it as well. --Folantin 09:10, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

D'oh! I meant "Musical influences" (which I'll probably rename "Musical style"). I'll take that section if that's OK with you. I might put the information about his attitude to and relations with other composers (including Mendelssohn) in there too. I certainly agree that I don't care about length limitations where Berlioz is concerned (I've been expanding the Rameau article likewise - it's currently 40k and it's going to get even longer). Once we've finished the body of the page, we can use the introduction to provide a short summary of the info in the article (per WP:LEAD). As you know, I've also been working on the individual composition articles (ideally we should have decent pages on all his works by the end of the year). I've done L'enfance du Christ, Les francs-juges and Symphonie funèbre et triomphale and a bit towards Overtures by Hector Berlioz. My next target will be finishing Prix de Rome cantatas by Hector Berlioz. You've already fixed R&J. If you're planning to do some more and want to divide "spheres of influence" we can arrange that. Elgar's 'cello concerto

Good afternoon (GMT -7, that is).

Quick infobox question

Hi. Thanks for your message. The infobox question has been discussed by all three mainstream music projects: classical music, composers and opera. Berlioz is really in the Composers bailiwick.

Turangalila made a detailed case for using infoboxes using User:Turangalila/sandbox/Infobox_composer as an example but the result of the debate was not to use it. The practice of the Composers project is explained on their project page here. Basically people felt that for every good infobox there were 20 bad ones, so the simplest solution was to ban them altogether rather than have time-consuming arguments about each one individually. -- Kleinzach 03:01, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Featured Article: I'm afraid to say I'm a little sceptical of the whole FA process given my experiences there. Too many reviewers can't see the wood for the trees. I'm sure there are enough references (maybe more than enough) in the sections you've worked on, but have you inserted the right kind of dashes and hyphens? LOL. By all means go ahead and put it up as a candidate once we've finished the revision, but bear in mind that I've seen the FA process make articles worse rather than better. For instance, someone will almost certainly complain it's too long - but why should we lose any valuable information for the sake of gaining a Featured Article star? Anyway, let's finish the article first before we worry about FA. --Folantin 17:44, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Lethesl, I came across some fine edits from you on some pages I watch and I thought I'd say hello. Since you're interested in classical music/opera/etc., perhaps you'd like to help filling in some missing articles at the Wikipedia:Music encyclopedia topics (there's about 40,000 of them, so there's plenty to do). It's just a hotlist compiled from various music encyclopedias, but there are so few people working on it the project was recently declared inactive. I occasionally work on it and am trying to encourage some other people so that we can make some progress bringing the daunting list down. Berlioz Citation

No problem! Hey, I own a copy of the original score for the Berlioz Requiem, and the Treatise on Instrumentation, which are both probably full of citations and information. Let me know if I can help! -Oh yes, I remember reading a segment in the Treatise about Berlioz having to use multiple sub-counductors for performances that large. GIF -> JPEG

Thanks for trying to replace a gif with a jpeg. I ended up duplicating your work because you didn't mark it with {{superseded|Image:new image name}}. I've now done that here http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Berliozpaint.gif and requested an admin delete the duplicate image I uploaded, and... started the process of having various wikis actually switch to your image. Maybe the badGIF template needs to be clearer about what to do? --Elvey 03:00, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

User:Lethesl/UBX/Skepticism

Hi Lethesl, I thought I'd let you know that a bot removed the image from that userbox you made, as it was free use, and not allowed anywhere but on an article related to the subject. The bot replaced the image with Image:Example.jpg, which I removed, so that everyone didn't have that funny image in the userbox. Helgoland (Bruckner)

Dear Lethesl,

See my update of the page Helgoland (Bruckner) and my comments on Talk:Helgoland (Bruckner).

Bruckner's "forgotten" Helgoland, composed in 1893, is of course not a potboiler, but an even mature choral works as his Psalm 150, composed in 1892. For unexplained reasons, this work is "neglected" and there are only four issued recordings, of which two are by Daniel Barenboim, one in the US and another in Europe.

I have expanded the sections "history" and "music", and added "citable" sources:

• Uwe Harten, Anton Bruckner. Ein Handbuch. Residenz Verlag, Salzburg, 1996. ISBN 3-7017-1030-9
• Cornelis van Zwol, Anton Bruckner - Leven en Werken, Thot, Bussum (Netherlands), 2012. ISBN 90-686-8590-2

I also have added a link to a not-issued performance of the work by Takashi Asahina, which can be heard on John Berky's website. A few other not-issued performances by, i.a., Gennadi Rozhdestvensky are stored in the Bruckner archive.
