Rifle research

Hi, I'm doing research for a novel, and I was wondering, since you contributed to the Henry Rifle article, if you know of resources available online or to you regarding breechloader availability in the period 1850-1860. Specifically, how likely would it be that a cowboy could own a breechloader rifle during this time period? (Likely suspects: M1819 Hall rifle, maybe?) Other than learning about the Henry rifle from a novel many years ago, I don't know much about it. My contribution to the article was from bits of information I gathered on the Internet. As for owning a breechloader rifle, I suspect most cowboys couldn't afford one. There's the Hollywood movie image of cowboys, and then there's the reality: They were mostly poor, uneducated laborers, whose most important possession was their saddle; everything else they owned in the world, except for what they wore on their backs, could fit into a couple of saddlebags. Anyway, for a cowboy, a long rifle would tend to get in the way during their herding duties. He would be more likely to have a revolver, a more affordable firearm, strapped his hip. Henry rifle I am not the expert on rifles of the 1800's. If you look at the "history" tab for many of the rifle articles you will see names of contributors that have added more information, and know more about, than I do.

That said. prior to the end of the Civil War, the rifle was a great LUXARY in the west. It was VERY expensive, and would have been few and far between. Rich cattle barrons, and then railroad men, would have been some of the only owners (unless it was stolen). After the U.S. Army ordered it in larger numbers for the Civil War (c.1869), the rifle started increasing in numbers in the west. When the soilders, like the Buffalo soilders finished their term of service the would try to find a way to take it with them ("somehow I lost my rifle..."). These babies were prized possesions. My thoughts on my ArbCom Candidacy

I think this userbox issue is really getting out of hand. Also, I confess: the only real reason I added ego as a reason for running was to stand out a little bit. One good thing that's come of running for ArbCom as such a new user is that I've really been able to learn a great deal about the Wikipedia user culture here, far sooner than I would have had I simply kept my head down and edited the encyclopedia to the exclusion of all else. I've learned that I'm Mergist, not Deletionist; exo-Pedian, and quite possibly a little Inclusionist. That's all, mostly. This is going on my User page. Information on Rifles?

Hi. While I'm not sure what models whare avilable in the continental US in the timeframe you are considering (apart from the Henry and possible some old Halls), there are two military models avilable in Europe, at least one of which was avilable for civilians:

• The Prussian needle gun (adopted in 1848, paper cartridges, range of 600 m)
• The Norwegian kammerlader (adopted 1842, paper cartridges with seperate caps, range in excess of 1100 m)

While I'm unsure if the needle gun would be avilable for a civilian in the timeframe you are considering, I do know for a fact that civilian kammerladers were possible to buy - eitehr manufacured in the same factories that produced the military versions (and thus identical), or produced by local gunsmiths.

Ammo. I'm not certain what sort of ammunition the Hall used; I'm assuming that the paper cartridge used for the Hall would be more or less the same as the one used by the Kammerlader. There is an external link (reprodused here) in the Kammerlader article showing how to 'roll your own' cartridges. Provided one had a bulletmould (for casting bullets), I see no reason why someone in the 1850s or 1860s shouldn't be able to do the same thing. Interestingly enought, on the same page, is a picture of an unaltered 2 band chamber loader gun model 1860 made for target shooters found in U.S.A... perhaps that could give you something to spin on as far as a backstory goes. If you aren't already aware, you are only attracting a vote of under 20% support to 80% oppose. This is mostly due to perceptions of a lack of experience.

Statistically, your vote is unlikely to rise above a 70-80% supermajority threshold required for election.

Therefore, it would be helpful if you would withdraw your candidacy from the election. This way there will be less candidates for others to read through before deciding their votes. The best place to announce such a decision would be on your candidate statement on the vote page, or on WP:AN/I, IF you choose to withdraw.

Wikiproject: aircraft

Regarding your comments on the F-16 Fighting Falcon FAC subpage, I have joined up to the project now. And when I said there was bias against Aircraft, I was referring to the comments on the Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/F-35 Joint Strike Fighter page, not to you directly. I mean, the Wikiproject doesn't use infoboxes, and if I use them then I get told that the article is not using the wikiprojects guidelines! Project news An independent military history peer review has been created for the benefit of the project. A number of articles have already been reviewed, receiving significantly more feedback within the project than they did on the generic peer review page. The project's Collaboration of the Fortnight got off to a great start with Ferdinand Foch and is now focusing on the military history of Spain. Two new task forces—dealing with warfare during classical antiquity and the Middle Ages—have been created. An effort to build a catalogue of high-quality maps for use in military history articles is now underway. The newly-formed translation department is looking for volunteers to help with translating featured articles from other-language Wikipedias.	From the Coordinators Welcome to the inaugural issue of the Military history WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this new format will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new groups and programs within the project that they may wish to participate in. User group for Military Historians

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias.
