Are you sure chicagos low rent district was an attack page? You deleted it immediately after it was vandalized into an personal attack page, now i can't see the history but it looked (at a glance) legitimate, at lease it had a few seperate users editing it. --Darkfred Talk to me 23:44, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

vandalism

edit

Hi There, You left me a message (to IP address 152.91.9.115, I wasn't signed in) regarding vandalism to the Political Correctness article. I removed those three sentences because I thought they were false, or at least unencyclopedic. “Aborigine” is a noun and “aboriginal” is an adjective – the removed sentence, as well as not referencing that “aborigine” is declining in use, also didn’t explain why the use of an adjective rather than a noun is “PC”. Also, the term "Torres Strait Islander" is not 'recent' having been used for at least 40 years. I thought the overall impression was misleading and the information unreferenced (and false), so I deleted it rather then “rephrase”. Assuming you have no objection, I will re-remove those sentences tonight. -Mb99 04:34, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Moved Irish-Americans back

edit

I moved List of Irish-Americans back to that page. Funny how no one seemed to have a problem with it when it was done to the Irish. I guess that's just goes in with the long history of descrimination in America towards Irish. AR120346 18:56, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

List of Irish-Americans

edit

If none of the others groups at at "List of Americans of ___ descent" then the Irish shouldn't be there either. One editor has put them back there. The Irish should stay at "List of Irish-Americans" untill all groups are moved to a new title. AR120346 19:03, 18 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Dechronifying

edit

FYI - I've re-deleted Shultz IV's article Dechronifying as a recreation of the AFD'd article Dechronification. I pointed him to WP:DRV as I expect he will want to contest this deletion. However, as you may know, Dechronification went to DRV once already, where it did not find support. FreplySpang (talk) 14:34, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

P.S. the DRV discussion can be seen in [this diff], in which Shultz withdrew it from consideration. FreplySpang (talk) 14:40, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
How long is Freply's memory??? If she's a mid-30s who has bigger fish to fry (i.e. more important things) in her life, having to work on graduate studies, (possibly) raise a family, and deal with thousands of other issues on Wikipedia, don't you think she could've forgotten about the whole Dechronification issue by now?
One of my pet peeves is when someone has a LONG memory about the negative things involving me. If they were positive, I wouldn't mind but negative long-term memories trouble me because times change, and so do people. When they still consider those memories however, that implies that they don't acknowledge that. --Shultz IV 18:08, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oxymorons/Oxymora

edit

Where are you ultimately wanting this page to be? With admin tools I can merge two pages with histories and leave the rest as empty redirects, if that's what you want. Leave a note on my talk page. (ESkog)(Talk) 01:36, 28 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

When I wandered in, "List of oxymora" had content and "List of oxymorons" redirected. Then i noticed that someone decided to swap the article and the redirector. (Spelling preference.) I agree, let it happen. (No complete straw poll, but the pretentious old spelling exceeds many peoples' threshold of annoyance, as mentioned on the discussion page. Someone finally acted. I doubt the changed version will annoy anyone enough to change it back.

Next, I noticed that "Talk:List of oxymora" had content and "Talk:List of oxymorons" did not exist. That is, the other user moved the page but did not move the talk page. So I tried the Move button and it worked. (Yay!)

Next, I thought, "Why did that user "move" the article page by cross-pasting the contents?" (When you do it that way, the History does not follow.)

So, I tried reverting both pages, intending to do a real "Move". Then I got stuck. You can't move a page onto its redirect, if that redirect has History. (Logical, I guess?) I then tried moving the redirecting page away, but that act leaves behind a redirect. The new redirect has no history, but it does not point back to the parent page either, so again NO DICE. Maybe the system needs a SWAP method, whereby one can swap a page and its redirect (and their histories?)? Something to think about. (Or else that's where the administrators come in.)

Your proposal sounds right. If you can, (1) wash out the cyclical edits i just did, (2) consolidate the histories under the page with content ("List of oxymorons"), (3) make "List of oxymora" a 'fresh' redirect, (4) burn the unintended "List Of Oxymora" page

warnings????!?!?!

edit

I have numerous warnings from you about vandilization and me being homophobic?????? I have NEVER written anything in wikipedia, why does it say that I have done all these horrible things???? I can't believe that someone would insult me on a personal level just because they assume I have done something; I am deeply hurt that you would call me homophobic- my college education is in defending people from discrimination, why on earth would i discriminate against anyone? I would also never think of vandalizing the site, i didn't even know i could delete or rewrite things on here! In using this website i understand that it is public opinion and not fact, and why would i have the right to change or vandalize anyone elses opinions and/or beliefs? If i don't agree w/ something on your site, i just go to another site that includes factual information to be used as a real reference. You have no right to resort to name-calling with customers of this site, how dare you!207.200.116.203 09:19, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm not really sure what you're talking about, since I don't see any warnings signed by me on your talk page. I'm sure, too, that I would never call another user homophobic - show me the link to whatever in the world you're talking about. Since this is AOL, and they assign IP addresses strangely, you will almost definitely receive warnings which are not meant for you. Your complaint is not with me, but with AOL. (ESkog)(Talk) 16:05, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
ESkog is right. Many users (including the less scrupulous ones) use AOL and the IP you left your message here with could have been used by a vandal just several hours prior. They assign IPs to one AOL customer for a time, and then assign the same IPs to a different AOL user some time later. Also, I recommend switching to a different ISP. AOL's monthly fees are far too high ($23.90/month for Dial-up!? Many other ISPs offer lower-priced services) and plenty more can be said negatively about the company. --Shultz IV 17:47, 30 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sincere Apologies

edit

I just learned how to use Wikipedia. I made external links on one of the pages I edited before realizing the mistake. I have since added similar material as external links. Otherwise, I believe the other edits I made were very reasonable. The site I am linking to (Art of Problem Solving) is a sponsor and associate of the AMC, hosting a *free* large forum used by thousands of students. If those external links to the AMC forum are not permitted, I will stop posting them, though I am curious as to why that's not okay (they are free resources).

I'm not yet comfortable with this form of communication, but my email is crawford@artofproblemsolving.com if you wish further correspondence. I'll avoid external links in the main pages, but add the forums in. I would like to add other free resources into other links, but I'll try to judge from the spirit of Wikipedia. Numerous of the links are just problem archives, which seem also reasonable to me. I hope I don't rub anyone the wrong way. Our site is not exactly a large corporate interest and provide enormous amounts of free material at what is currently an overall loss. I plan also to create Wikipedia entries for scholarship competitions and some other resources for math students. I will not post another link to our books pages unless I'm otherwise told that it's reasonable.

I forgot about that

edit

Look, I'm sorry; I completely forgot that you didn't want to make your personal information public. Now that you mention it, we did have this discussion at least over a month ago. Lately, I've felt worried that I've been forgetting more often. What can I do about this because forgetting can be harmful and even destructive in certain ways.

How long am I on this "probation"? What can I do to earn lifting the probation early?

About email communication- I didn't think it correlated. What does that have to do with it?

I meant well with the friendly request of if it was OK to upload your photo and maybe put it on your user page but honestly, if I had remembered that you didn't want any more personal info posted here, I wouldn't have uploaded and asked in the first place.

Forgetfulness is my worst enemy nowadays. I don't know how much longer I will last here as long as this looms over me. My life and survival as a Wikipedian now seems so fragile. How can I possibly cope?

Also, how long will it take and what can I do to earn back my emailing privileges to you?

I hope to restore the cordiality of this mentorship. --Shultz IV 21:36, 14 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Reply

edit

Oh no, this doesn't bode well for me (at least feelings-wise, maybe more than that...) If I wanted to discuss with you about something I prefer no one else reads, then and there, and I couldn't wait for you to log on, that's what email would be for. As long as I don't ask you for personal info in your email (and I won't try regardless), what's there to worry about? (I hope you don't interpret any of what I say in a negative way. I don't want my messages to inadvertently make things worse.)

Your reply also didn't lift the aura of fragility on our mentorship and my survival on Wikipedia. What if 2,500 edits down the line, I inadvertently post something someone construes as giving away others' personal info? No matter how good the 2,499 other edits were, I fear that saying something as benign-looking as "(username) likes to play 'Halo 2'" could be construed as that and therefore earn me an indef-block, a termination of the mentorship, and it would all be horrible. I have a feeling that I, the person, wouldn't be allowed back either, even with a completely different username.

I don't want to live in fear while contributing to Wikipedia. I wish for the atmosphere of our mentorship to again be as warm and friendly as it was before uploading the photo. As long as this probation persists, I don't know how long it will be before that previous atmosphere gets restored.

I read from other people that, to paraphrase, making a lot of good contributions gives users extra "second-chance tokens" so that in case they forget and break a rule thousands of edits down the line, that they broke thousands of edits ago, they would be forgiven and given a warning whereas they would've gotten a block if they broke the same rule just 100 edits later. I hope this applies to me too because we all forget occasionally and try to edit in good faith while others sometimes misconstrue them as bad-faith edits. (I hope I've been saying what I mean accurately.)

Minutes ago, I invited you to a private chatroom so we could discuss this. You haven't responded so unless you're AFK for a while, this is also worrying me. (I knew you were online because I had the client notify when you log on and off. If you didn't see the invitation, it might have been a glitch.) I've also put some of my latest thoughts on my userpage. Feel free to take a look. --Shultz IV 23:20, 14 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

edit

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wiki.x.io with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:20, 21 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
