In answer to your first question, nope, you don't need references on your userpage. You may put any information you like on your userpage, as long as it doesn't violate your privacy. In answer to your second question, there are the Wikipedia IRC channels which may also be helpful.

Communication

Hey, just read the Communication subpage you created, and I just wanted to say it is absolutely fantastic! Very appropriate and truly accurate. I really hope others (both new here and "old-timers") will find and read that essay. If nothing similar exists in terms of Wiki essays (and I don't immediately see anything), I may have to get you to prettify it, move it to the Wikipedia: space and place it in Category:Wikipedia essays. Huntster (t@c) 10:58, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Hey, any time. You've obviously got brains and drive, and that is very welcome around here. Before tucking it into the main essays category, it should probably be looked at by a variety of others to pull additional opinions. Do you use IRC? Wikipedia editors/admins/lurkers have a strong presence on Freenode...you can get a lot of second and third opinions there. Huntster (t@c) 11:51, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Norton Articles Sup tag?

Extended content

What is a "sup" tag? TechOutsider (talk) 21:49, 27 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

"sup" is a tag that tells the embedded text to display as superscript. When it was used in conjunction with the ref tag - it caused a funkey alignment for the sentence, and was the likely culprit for the spacing issues in that paragraph. There is sup, and sub - sub is a subscript (footnote kind of thing) example.
  • If I have this text - and I put the sup tags around it like this
    • If I have this text ... it will look like
      • If I have this text

The sub I mentioned puts it at the bottom. Hope that helps — Ched (talk) 22:01, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

GA review .. how bout it?

Are you willing to do the GA review? You qualify; you obviously aren't a die-hard Symantec supporter; you just used their products a little in the 90s because you had too, right? And you didn't make that many changes to the article. TechOutsider (talk) 01:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I'm not a member of any official assessment team or anything, but sure - drop me a link, and I'll be happy to contribute. As far as my knowledge of Norton, when I was an network admin in the 90's, we ran Norton for a while, and now, as a self-employed "tech", I see it a couple times a week or so doing house-calls for computer related services. I've run into v2009 a couple times in the last month or so, and I'm impressed - great improvements - but no, I haven't installed it on any of my personal computers. You doing a peer review, or going to one of those assessment boards? Either way, drop me a link and I'd be happy to help. ;) — Ched (talk) 01:46, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
It's a GA nomination. The talk page is here. [[1]]
About v2009. As with all security suites, it's boring after the hype wears out. Right now, it just sits in my tray staring back at me. Before, I would click and provoke the tray icon at least 120 times a minute. So I started using Kaspersky on my Windows 7 side ... got boring, now switched to Nod32 v4 beta. Both Kaspersky and Nod are actually nice; however I don't feel like replacing NAV09 on my productivity side (Windows XP); it's such an integral part of my computer and switching would mean a big learning curve for the other users of my computer. Have you heard about Norton 360 v3 yet? Don't buy it; it feels like a mess, honestly. Just NIS's features and menus pasted all over the place. Psh. With a highlighter yello interface. Horrible. I'm open to other security suites. TechOutsider (talk) 02:32, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

Norton Internet Security MAC ed. The only reason this article could fail GA is because of the MAC section. Can you help expand that particular section; I'm deaf to the article's shortcomings after my hundreds of edits. TechOutsider (talk) 02:51, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

(ec) I'll take a look late Sunday - I'll be busy all day tomorrow with Red Cross (First Aid, CPR) training classes and such. Then I have a few jobs to do in the evening - one quite elderly lady requires taking a bit of time explaining why POP and HTML mail is different. But I will look at it. Also have that Trojan merge I need to get done, and new article Shutdown Day that I'm working on. Then there's the Malwarebytes article that I found some good info on, want to get that updated too. I'm not sure how one gets behind in volunteer work, but somehow I seem to have managed ... LOL. — Ched (talk) 02:59, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Ha nice article. TechOutsider (talk) 05:25, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

Just filling up your talk page

I remember when we clashed over the Norton articles .... back when I was slightly biased. I remember the first time you ventured to communicate with me. And look at us now :) TechOutsider (talk) 02:56, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

<* smiles *> .. yep, sometimes it's a little harder with text than it is sitting at the bar havin a beer, cause you can't tell the tone of voice in what someone is writing. You're a good editor, and you've learned a ton since starting, I'm proud to know you. Just curious, are you in the USA? ... none of my business - just wondered. — Ched (talk) 03:02, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Yep; I've learned a lot. I didn't know how to make a line like his before (|), and recently I found out. I didn't know how to reference; i just used external links. Now I know. I didn't know how to make a wikitable. Now I do! Yay! TechOutsider (talk) 05:26, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

Fail

Talk:Norton_Internet_Security/GA2. Everything was good except for fact NAV was to be merged into the NIS article! Argh! I'm really going to have trouble diff. between the two since their feature set changes each year. TechOutsider (talk) 05:35, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

More specific. How do I merge the system requirements; both have different requirements? Could I do like a ...

256/512 MB RAM needed; where the first # applies to NAV and the second # goes for NIS?

Alternatively, could I just make NAV a little subsection on the bottom, removing all of the version history except for the 2009 version information? TechOutsider (talk) 05:40, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

And of course, what to name the new article? Norton Internet Security/Norton AntiVirus. Or could I just make redirect pages? TechOutsider (talk) 05:41, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

Hmmm ... not sure - I was just looking at the review. Something about the closer. Only been here a couple weeks?... I don't think so! Someone that knows their way around pretty well. Not that it's important, but yea - a merge at this point could be tough. Not sure I'd put AV at the bottom, but yea would need to create a section, and several subsections. The tough part's going to be cleaning out the dup stuff. — Ched (talk) 05:45, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Norton security products? ... don't know, but that can be done after the merge. — Ched (talk) 05:45, 28 February 2009 (UTC)
Don't forget about Norton 360. I may have to merge that as well. I see that you have rollback capabilities; you may have to use them. How bout under Version History, at the bottom, I just say taht NAV has everything mentioned above cept' for .... Or should I make NAV come first and then at the bottom say NIS has all of the above + ... ?TechOutsider (talk) 15:41, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
Ok, everything's going somewhat smoothly now :) Thanks for all your help! I am receiving a lot of support. TechOutsider (talk) 15:58, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
Hey Tech, I don't use rollback for that kind of thing - rollback is only for very clear cases of vandalism. Don't worry too much about the merges yet (other than the one of Trojans -- and I'm about 1/2 through that one. Just because 1 editor says one article should be merged - doesn't make it so. I'm still a little in doubt about that last article assessment thing - not sure that holds water. Wish I could do a checkuser on that editor - it's someone that's been around - but has created a new account. I'll take a closer look at NIS, NAV, and 360 later tonight. Yep, there's a lot of great folks here that can and will help - no doubt! — Ched (talk) 20:50, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Norton II: Software Info Box

How many software info boxes should/can I have? TechOutsider (talk) 21:50, 28 February 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

Well, I'm not sure I agree with merging the two pages, but I would have one box for NIS and one for NAV. — Ched ~ (yes?) 00:27, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Well that's the reason why GA status is on hold. Can I challenge? However, I agree; the two articles should be merged. TechOutsider (talk) 03:03, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
OH ... You think the two article the other. The GA review doesn't need to be "challenged" as such. All editors are encouraged to state their viewpoints, I've just made a comment myself. In the end, it will depend upon consensus. Now if you can figure that one out - you're better than most folks here ... LOL. — Ched ~ (yes?) 03:16, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
No. The ga review specifically mentioned to merge the two articles. Ok, I read the ga talk page, and you got it right. I agree with merging and I've already done so much. I think that they both share a common thread and merging is actually best. Anyways, I need help developing the opening statement for the newly merged article ...

TechOutsider (talk) 03:19, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

umm .. ok? That means you want to merge them? — Ched ~ (yes?) 03:22, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes. I actually do. It has always been a pain to "sync" the two articles. TechOutsider (talk) 03:24, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
OK... then go ahead and start copying the stuff from NAV over to NIS - when you're done, PROD NAV. From what I can see in a brief skim through, I'll admit that the bulk of NIS is actually NAV, with the firewall and spam filter thrown in. I understand why you think the merge makes sense. — Ched ~ (yes?) 03:33, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
About the software infobox ... do I just put them on top of one another? The only thing that varies is the picture ... Can I have two pics? Or should I just illustrate NAV later in the article? TechOutsider (talk) 03:35, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
I'd just use one info box, if the pic is that much different - use it further along in the article. I wouldn't put a second info box for NAV, I just note the differences in the section covering NAV. — Ched ~ (yes?) 03:39, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Naming the article

What should I name the new article? I'm just going to move it so the wikilinks that link to the article aren't suddenly outdated. TechOutsider (talk) 03:51, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I'm thinking about Norton from Symantec; that's their logo.TechOutsider (talk) 03:56, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
Do a RfC first - see what others think. Let me know the link when you do. If you want me to do it, let me know. — Ched ~ (yes?) 04:01, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes please; I am not familiar with the process. TechOutsider (talk) 04:06, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
If you are done, where can I find the Rfc? If you aren't, don't rush. TechOutsider (talk) 15:43, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
Will post it here shortly (as in within the next couple hours) - have you got everything copied over yet? I'm also looking into the whole "Pass" / "Fail" thing on GA - getting some feedback on that.

Heidelberg Raceway

I replied on my talk page. I notice that you're planning this article on Heidelberg Raceway. I'd love to help! It was one of the original NASCAR tracks for Strictly Stock's (now Sprint Cup) first season! Of course I have lots of sources for a track that important. I'd expect it to be an easy WP:DYK. Royalbroil 05:11, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure, glad to help on Heidelberg. Is it okay for me to work on it in your sandbox? When I'm done, should I move it to mainspace to preserve the edit history? I've put significant effort into Tim Richmond lately. It was in sad shape. I'm closing in on nominating it for WP:GA. Royalbroil 05:33, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
The track held 4 Sprint Cup events (as Strictly Stock and Grand National) plus 1 NASCAR Convertible race [2]. That makes it inherently notable. It was an original NASCAR track. I've found enough independent reliable sources that it won't matter anyhow. Yes, I know OrangeMike - even before he was an admin. We worked together at WikiProject Wisconsin. Royalbroil 05:49, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
I've done a lot of the work on the older drivers! About the deleting of userpages - I noticed a least a week ago that something was going on in the deletion log. I'm like you - I don't worry about what other people are doing here in situations like this. I hate political things like that. I think that why so many other people come and go - they get caught up and worried about situations like this. Royalbroil 06:09, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Cool, and very good advice too. Huntster told me the same thing, (and I pretty much have blind faith in him), so I moved the AN stuff off my watchlist. I have to plead guilty to peeking in every once in a while, just to see what's going on though. Making a note to myself to stop doing that! ;) I'll dig out my NASCAR books next week, and start getting involved there shortly. I do want to get a one sentence stub Shutdown Day propped up a bit too. I live about 7 miles from where Heidelberg used to be, and grew up at the track, so I look forward to working on the article with you. ;) reply— Ched ~ (yes?) 06:20, 1 March 2009 (UTC) (note: deleted my drama page)

Tim Richmond

I guess I accidentally didn't save my reply yesterday. About the AK article - go for it! As far as I'm concerned it's not complete. Of course, what article is truly complete! There were several statements that I had to remove because I couldn't source them. If you want to meet up at Slinger, email me by hitting "Email this user" on my userpage. Their season runs from early May until around the first weekend of September. Maybe you could shoot a picture of whatever exists where Heidelberg used to be.

I've copyedited the Tim Richmond article to my satisfaction. The next step is to get a few people to proofread it. Here is where it pays to have Wikifriends. It's good to have at least one person who is very knowledgeable about the topic. I'm hoping that you would be this person. It's good to have someone who is real good at English proofreading to review it. It's best if they don't understand the topic so they have no preconceptions to get in the way. I have a friend at WikiProject Wisconsin who I'll ask. Depending on how this goes, I might nominate it for GA. I'll keep you informed. One of the criteria for GA is that the article is stable. That means that there should be some time for anyone to edit the article and there cannot be any edit warring. Fortunately, it takes several days or up to a few weeks for someone to review it. Also, it's expected (and good karma) for a nominator to review another article which needs reviewing against the GA criteria. I like picking one that's ahead of mine on my list. Royalbroil 02:25, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for being willing to do the peer review/copyedit. I asked the other copyeditor for a grammar check. About Kulwicki, I've looked long and hard to find a free image of him. I've talked on the phone (literally) with his friend who's writing a book about him. I've asked several photographers on flickr, including one who used to photograph for Circle Track magazine. So far I've found nothing. I'd REALLY appreciate a picture. I'd love to find a picture of Rob Moroso too. Cheers! Royalbroil 03:18, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Please edit the article directly. When you start, please check to make sure that you're not editing at the same time as the other proofreader. Royalbroil 03:25, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
I stopped just prior to the NASCAR section - check to see that the edits are actually improvements before I go further ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 04:44, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
I have no problems with everything that you did, so I have no changes. It's hard to see these little problems without someone pointing them out to you. Keep up the great work! My philosophy for reviewing someone else's proofread is that I have to see something wrong with the change before I discuss. If I feel it's a neutral change or an improvement, I leave it be. It usually reads better with even a neutral change. I'd only change if I think it's wrong.
I'm concerned about the writing style in the NASCAR section. I had no race information from 1982 until 1985, so I think it's real dry statistics. Anything that you can do to improve the choppiness is appreciated. Another concern is that there used to be a criticism of NASCAR section talking about how people felt it was unfair that he was the only driver that had to do "random" drug testing. Another section had talked about how he had to submit his medical records to NASCAR before he would be reinstated, which he wouldn't do because he didn't want anyone to know he had AIDS (especially with the either "gay" or "drug user" stigma from that time). I couldn't find reliable sourcing, but I wasn't too sure if it belonged there in the first place. Royalbroil 05:00, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
Looks like we're both instinctively on the same page ;). I saw that section, and wondered about it - so I asked - I'll go through the rest of the article tonight when I get home.

Peter Norton

For the opening statement, I was looking for help @ the Moz. FF article. Very interesting. FF mentions market share. I know that NAV/NIS is the most popular and most used product in the world; however I lack exact numbers. According to Symantec, they protect more people in the world than anyone else. However, I think that statment could be seen as advertisement/promoting Norton and it is too general. And I found it on the box of N360 I brought; I have seen it nowhere else.

So, I'm thinking about incorporating Peter Norton, somehow. However, looking at the Peter Norton article, I cannot find any interesting or notable information. Symantec just decided to use his name. TechOutsider (talk) 17:25, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

First before I forget, I got some clarification on GA here. OK, yep, I remember when it was Norton - I used his tools a bunch back in the 80's. He got bought out by Symantec. Depends on how you word it, and the sources you cite I think. (regarding the advertisement stuff). Probably the Peter Norton stuff could go in the History section (or sub-section). By the time you get all that kind of stuff in, you may be looking at FA too. I'm gonna get the RfC thing done now ... I'll leave you the info shortly. — Ched ~ (yes?) 17:31, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
don't know if it would fit, but at one time - McAfee and Norton had a very intense rivalry over getting the AV market. — Ched ~ (yes?) 17:33, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

OK - I added the RfC to both Technology and Business: tech is here ~ the Business one is here ~ and the section in the talk page where we'll get comments is here - you should probably put your comment in right away so it's at the top of the section too. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 18:10, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Merge WholeSecurity and Norton AntiBot

The reasons are listed here. Do you know anywhere I could post the proposed merge for publicity? The Computer Security wikipjt isn't especially active. TechOutsider (talk) 23:50, 1 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I posted there - but don't know much about bots at this point. I haven't done any serious programming in years, but I'll see what I can do down the road. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 04:20, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
"PROD" the article? It goes like this. WholeSecurity was acquired by Symantec. The technologies developed by the company formed the basis of Norton AntiBot, along with technologies licensed from Sana Security]]. Key technologies in Norton AntiBot were then put in NIS/NAV for the 09 release. TechOutsider (talk) 23:57, 2 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

Someone keeps taking down my corrected page.

Hi there, I am new to Wikipedia and I'm confused right out of the gate. I posted corrections and additions to the page on Kentucky author Gurney Norman, but someone keeps taking the corrected page down and reposting the previous page. This has happened several times and I'm pretty frustrated. Why is this happening? Many thanks, Spudsparo (talk) 06:22, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Merge

Sorry to arrive so late, been a bit busy over the past couple of days. I see you've got the articles merged...I see nothing out of the ordinary. As for the rename, so long as noone on the talk page has a problem with it, then you are free to do so. Just give it a few days to see if there are any objections. I trust you'll do fine, but if you want, I'll double check the move when you've finished it. Huntster (t@c) 06:58, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

By the way, I'm astonished with the sheer amount of talk page activity you've got going on! You've probably generated as much traffic in one month as I do in a whole year. Not to mention, far more active than me. Kudos! Huntster (t@c) 07:03, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
(ec)No problem - I was half tempted to drop a "You appear to be engaged in an edit war" note on your talk page - but thought better of it, at least until you got everything under control. ;) ... I'll drop a "Move" discussion on the talk page first then, and check back later for objections (doubtful). Seriously though, you may want to call down to the station if he's that close, better safe than sorry - CYA.
Did you get to see the race? .. Jamie Mac pulled a drifting move that can go in the next Fast and Furious movie ... lol. — Ched ~ (yes?) 07:08, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, edit war with regards to the vandalism and such going on? Yeah, that's a mess. Guy is caught red-handed and still won't admit to his errors. Oh well. And I'm not concerned with his proximity...there's virtually no way for him to know who I am, locate me, or even really determine where I work (not to mention *when*). In the unlikely event he would make any moves in real life, I know I have blue backup. *grin* And no, didn't get to see the race, sounds like it was a darn good one. Huntster (t@c) 07:13, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
LMAO, if only all editors were as teachable! If only I was as teachable, hehe. Avoid teh dramaz! Huntster (t@c) 07:24, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

← Thanks for the kind words :) Yeah, I saw where you were working to rescue Shutdown Day. At first I was concerned it was too non-notable, but there appear to be several varied sources within Google News (link) that you may find useful as refs. Not sure if there needs to be separate subsections for each year...I doubt each iteration is notable enough; and do remember to change all references to inline citations, rather than just hanging in the References section. Huntster (t@c) 07:41, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for news links! - and yea ... I'll do the proper format for the refs here shortly - very rough draft right now, and was just taking short-cuts (even though I shouldn't). After the Study Skills purging, I've learned to save to HD too, just in case. Yea, now that I think about it a bit, you're right, probably should just flush the separate years. Thx for checking it out ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 07:49, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

New happenings

Ched, could you please go and take a look at my user (not talk) page, there's a brief correspondence there that I'd like you to see. Once again, thank you for your insights on many different things in Wiki, you rock! Edit Centric (talk) 08:53, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

I REALLY hate to see this Edit. I'm not sure what precipitated this (yet), so I don't exactly know what course of action could help at this point. I am hoping that after a good nights sleep, some time with your family, and maybe a beer or frapachino you will reconsider. I'm sorry I wasn't around to help (if that would have even been an option). Maybe just going to another area for a little while would help - A couple folks here suggested that I avoid the drama pages for a bit, and it's been helpful to me. Maybe do some editing on some subjects that you enjoy, twinkle some vandalism, chime in on some of the PRODed pages. Please don't let one or two editors you don't agree with get you so down. You were working in one of the toughest areas of Wikipedia - dispute resolution often requires grabbing the most aggressive person in the room, and trying to pull them off the pile - that means you're going to get a black eye now and then. But, I guess that doesn't really help - you already know that. I will see if I can piece anything together tonight, and if there is any way to work through this.
I really am very sorry to see you feel this emotionally drained, please feel free to let me know if there is anything I can possibly do to help - sometimes just having someone to talk to can have a great healing effect. I am honored that you consider me someone that you respect, and I don't take that lightly. I'll consider your user pages a sign that "You're not home at the moment", and as such - I wouldn't feel right about leaving anything there (other than a note on the front door). I truly hope that you'll keep this line of communication open - even if it's after a short wiki-break

Ched ~ (yes?) 13:59, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

As promised, I did review what I could here. Again, Edit, I am sorry that you feel dismissed or discredited. My guess is that the constant strain of moderating disputes at WQA has taken an understandable emotional toll on you. Sort of like the wide receiver that goes over the middle for a passing offense - you take a lot of hits, and eventually, you get tired and start to hurt. Looks like a "straw that broke the camel's back" case. Funny how it's always the little things that can be the ones that push things over the top. To be honest though, I really didn't see anything so awful. I've seen roux and Future Imperfect at other places, and although I've never directly interacted with them (as least as far as my feeble memory can recall), I've never seen any indication of rudeness or even a hint of unfriendliness from either one of them. In fact, my perception has always been one that roux has a fantastic sense of humor when the mood calls for it. I honestly doubt that there was any dismissive intent at all, (unless there is some past history that I'm unaware of). The only possible items I can see that could be defined a little more are 1.) Moderator and 2.) Text color

  1. While in the context of the WQA discussions the term moderator carries the connotation among you regulars as simply that of: Offering a third opinion in an attempt to counsel disgruntled users, and attempt to de-escalate potential problems. On a larger stage, (meaning the Internet in general) web-sites such as BBS, forums, message boards, chat rooms, etc. - a Moderator can indicate a position of authority, an editor who has the ability to remove threads, and block or ban users from a particular website (much like the "Administrator's" functions at Wikipedia).
  2. Text color - I'm used to seeing all different colors and fonts through-out various IM, chat-rooms, message boards, forums, blogs, etc. In fact I never would have even noticed or thought twice about it if it hadn't been mentioned. But I guess that other than the green text on policy pages, (and the various creative signatures) - it's really not seen too much on Wikipedia.

So, in a sense I could see a new user thinking a different text color and title of moderator might be inclined to think there was some sense of authority inferred there - even though I have no doubt that wasn't the intent. So, in conclusion:

  • Upon further review - I find that there has been a ruling of "No harm, no foul" - that's not to say that you were not injured on the play, you, as a valuable member of our team, obviously were. I'll call a suspension of the game, everybody belly up to the bar, I'm buying the first round! Relax a bit, take a break from the tortures of WQA - and get refreshed, we're gonna need you for the play-offs buddy. I look forward to your return. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 10:37, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Past v. Present tense

Which should I write in? TechOutsider (talk) 00:53, 7 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I would think that for the NIS / NAV articles it would be fine to write in present tense since the topic is current. If however you are referring to a past event or state (NAV 2006 runs slowly in such-and-such a case) then I would probably write that in past tense. If there is something in particular you'd like me to look at, drop me a link.
On a side note - I have to apologize for not getting back to you on the image issues. By the time I got around to looking at things, it appeared that Huntster was helping you get the items sorted out. To be honest, I am not up to speed at all on the image issues. I'll have to research that very soon though because as a (hobbyist) photographer, I'll be adding some content before long. Since my brother is a professional photographer, I'm pretty well clued in to the concerns on copyright issues, but not from a Wikipedia standpoint.
Did that one editor come back and do the GA review yet? — Ched ~ (yes?) 01:02, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
I'm a bit haggard and out-of-it at the moment (really really bad week) and failed to follow up with Tech regarding those screenshots. I'll try to write something tomorrow. If either of you need advise regarding image licensing of any kind, please ask on my talk page. Huntster (t@c) 19:22, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

Sorry

Whoa, I'm sorry. I'm not quite sure how or why that happened. It was pretty close to right before I went to bed though, so maybe I was overtired. My apologies, I didn't mean to. Vincent Valentine 12:38, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

I've done some more thinking about my accidental deletion and here's my best guess: I was using Huggle, and if you look at the time stamps for our edits they were at the same time. My guess is that you saved yours a split second before mine, so when Huggle added a warning for the vandalism I had just reverted, your warning got wiped. It was only my second time using Huggle, but I'm pretty sure the timing thing was just a weird freak occurrence where your edited had just saved and Huggle's internal mechanisms were setting up the warning and they got conflicted. I did not mean to undo your edit. Sorry, again. Best, Vincent Valentine 14:32, 7 March 2009 (UTC)
Absolutely nothing to apologize for - I noticed the time thing this morning as well, but was in a hurry to leave - wasn't you at all, Huggle "out-warned" my Twinkle ... LOL. I'll follow up tonight when I get home (Ched - not logged in) (replied on tp)
(x-posted) Hi Daniel, absolutely no reason to apologize what-so-ever. When I saw your reply this morning, I double-checked as well, and as you said - it wasn't you or me. Looks like "Huggle the Heavyweight" out-wrestled "Twinkle-toes" on a vandal revert. An edit conflict (exact same minute on two different articles) which appeared to get caught up in the server cache I guess. The only reason I even asked, is that when I warn a new user (rather than an IP), I'll watchlist for a short time - just to make sure that they: 1.) Get the message, and 2.) don't end up running loose for too long unchecked. I didn't know if maybe you knew some history or information that I wasn't aware of, so out of my curiosity (I know - it killed the cat ... LOL), I dropped the AGF question. If I hadn't been so rushed for time this morning too (was out of town all day), I would have replied sooner. The important parts: Vandal warned, and I got to meet another editor - Hi, I'm Ched. I appreciate you taking the time to check it out too - not all editors are as dedicated or polite, so ... Thank you - and it's a pleasure to meet you. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 02:48, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
I was a bit worried that I wasn't using Huggle correctly or something, since it was my first day using it. I posted my first reply and then I took a shower and had a cup of coffee and thought about it some more and that's when I checked the time and realized what had happened. Like you, I also add talk pages of IPs that I warn for pretty much the same reasons you listed. Great minds think alike, perhaps? No worries about not replying until now, I can understand a time crunch, I'm finishing up a paper myself before I go on vacation next week (first one in years!), while running AWB for some typos in the background. As you pointed you correctly (despite what my user name says!) my name is Daniel (Dan, Danny, Danno, any of those are OK by me) and it's great to meet you. I noticed the dog on your userpage, very nice! My family owns a West Highland White Terrier ourselves and I have a pet cat as well. Anyway, nice to meet a fellow editor and I appreciate your reply--as you aptly point out it seems a lot of people don't really respond to messages you leave them (at least in my experience). A little interaction is always nice! Well, to spare this from turning into a tl;dr situation, I will merely repeat that it is nice to meet you and farewell for now. Hey Konsole, sorry for delay - I was out of town for the day. Information on Lupin can be found at WP:Lupin. A couple notes of caution in case you're a new editor:
  • When using the spell check - make sure you are also using the correct dictionary - there are subtle differences in versions of English (US, UK, Canada, Australia, etc.). Most editors are nice, but a few can get snippy if they perceive a slight.
  • Check to see that the spell check is actually in an article, rather than a quote or reference.
  • When using the anti-vandal tool, make sure it is actually vandalism, editors can get testy when an AGF edit is reverted as vandalism in the edit summary.

All in all the typical "Use Caution" disclaimer. Looks like you have an interest in computer related articles, I'll probably see you around, and look forward to working with you. Good Luck — Ched ~ (yes?) 03:11, 8 March 2009 (UTC) (cc: UT)

An Important discussion

Please stop in at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2009 March 5 to view a timely and important discussion for all wikipedia editors.--Buster7 (talk) 03:42, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Judging by current Wikipedia trends, recent Wikipedia history, and the sum of discussion(s) at the individual article(s), I will assume you are referring to section #Template:Rescue. While my immediate inclination is to !vote Keep and supply an emotional response, I feel it is in the best interests of the community to evaluate this item with objectivity, reason, research, and a certain lack of emotion. As such, I am compelled to withhold an immediate and impulsive reply. The article was posted on March 5, and as the guidelines state "Articles listed here are debated for at least five days...", this allows me some breathing room. Specifically until March 10.
I believe that this particular entry is but a small thread of a deeper, and far more important issue, than the individual item may indicate. However, as this particular item must be addressed only within the scope of the specific 1 and 1/2 year old template, a considered and concise comment attending my !vote should be the most properly prepared post I am able to supply. While the tentacles of this current and rampant deletion campaign must see their way to their natural conclusion, this particular nomination will ultimately be decided by the closing admin. I would hope that overall issues will be apparent to those dealing with the larger issues. I also hope that all final decisions will include an educated and far reaching decision which considers a vision that is in the best interests of Wikipedia's future. — Ched ~ (yes?) 04:49, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
<sidebar>....The Big One's offpring... having been orphaned at Wiki-birth, I would appreciate any info you can provide. The Big One...sounds important. Am I of royal heritage? Does my lineage go back to the early days of WikiWorld? I would pay a penny to know who this Big One is! Please advise.--Buster7 (talk) 15:29, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
LOL .. I was referring to the topic of the situation, rather than an individual editor. This is a very hot topic at the moment, spread across many boards. There are many high-profile players involved, some whom carry a great deal of weight. My edit summary had nothing to with any particular editor, but rather a meager attempt to cast a wide eye on the overall topic. While I have some strong opinions, and I'm an inclusionist at heart - I do understand the need to keep non-notable, trivial, and "not ready for prime-time" items off the desk so to speak. I do have a rather lengthy text file which contains many of my thoughts and feelings on the matter - but it would require a less emotional and more objective re-write to achieve any measure of acceptable maturity. I'm not sure why you would feel "orphaned", and I hope that is simply a humorous sidebar. I personally appreciate your abilities, and admire your enthusiasm. I think you're a good editor, with a great future. And indeed your lineage, (sum of human knowledge), does go back to the very conception of WikiWorld - see Larry Sanger.
Sometimes winning a war requires choosing which battles to fight, sacrificing some valuable resources, knowing when to sit out a particular conflict, and observing the overall lay of the land. If your opponent has the upper-hand - evade. If your opponent has a superior tactical advantage - reposition. and perhaps most importantly ... If a battle appears to have already turned in your favor - remain in an observation area to avoid collateral damage. If a particular commander-in-chief of an opposing force is suffering attacks from all sides, and is dangerously close defeat - a last ditch, scorched earth, frontal attack is common. However, ultimately this can lead to his Waterloo. That's just my personal opinion and game-plan, your mileage may vary. Note: this is all a hypothetical mock-up. Wikipedia is indeed not a battlefield, and this is purely a euphemism for the wide-range and diverse perceptions of what is best for Wikipedia. Always my primary concern. — Ched ~ (yes?) 16:19, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
Wise observations. The euphemism fits. And thanks for the pat on the back. FYI...having been a court jester in a former life, humor is a tool in my arsenal.--Buster7 (talk) 17:48, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Heidelberg

What do you think about the article in your sandbox? I can't find a list of track champions, but otherwise it looks solid. I'm going to nom this article for DYK since the highest ever NASCAR finish by a female happened at the first race at the track when Sara Christian finished fifth. I started her article and had it placed on DYK several years ago. I love seeing things come full circle! Royalbroil 02:12, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Wow, I can't believe how far you've brought the article in such a short time! I'll clean out my junk at the bottom and move it .. (The first move I did .. well, didn't work so well ...lol). I'm not sure about references, but other regular drivers were: Tommy Gale (NASCAR driver), Bob Senneker (ASA Champion), Bob James (Richard Petty crew member), Dick Trickle (NASCAR), Harold Smith, and Jody Ridley. I'll see if I can find the refs and post info. Other (possible) notes:
  • Bobby Allison's brother came up and spent the year when Tom Colella bought one of Bobby's cars. Tom had trouble getting the NASCAR machine to handle on our track (wasn't Donnie - can't think of his name at the moment).
  • Joe Mihallic won one of the Tri-State 150's on three wheels. When he lost the left front, he kept going the last 50 (?) laps and let the centrifical (sp?) force keep the corner off the ground.
  • Joe Mihallic once broke his back when he hit a tire rolling down the front stretch. The damn flagman (one of the worst we ever had), never threw the caution when he saw the loose wheel. scared the living crap out of us fans at the time, and Joe didn't end up going to the hospital until 2 days later.

Other drivers who ran a lot of big events included: Joey Fair, Iggy Katona, Dick Trickle, Butch Miller, Gus Linder, Moose Meyers, Ed Mitchell and probably a handful of others I can't think of at the moment. Also - can I upload a picture of Bill Steinback interviewing Ed Howe after winning the final event? - I took the picture, but don't have any signed release forms from the people in the picture. — Ched ~ (yes?) 04:47, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Serious as an admin?

Thank you very much for your supportive comments on the nomination talk page. Coincidentally, I was just telling a familiar admin, via e-mail, pretty much what you said - that I would take the job itself very seriously, that my behavior would likely pleasantly surprise the naysayers, and that I would be very cautious in the use of admin authority. The naysayers all make good points and fair complaints. You might notice that I have totally backed off from the Obama article. If I had it to do over, I would take someone's advice from last night and do nothing - drop the shields and let them take it over for a day. Or at least leave the defense of the page up to others. It could always be repaired later. That's the thing - you learn something new here every day. Thanks again for your support. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 03:04, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

np Bugs, I don't doubt for a second that you'll make a great admin. I ran into similar problems at the Larry Sanger article a while back - real mess. I personally don't think that Obama is on the right path economically, and while he wasn't my choice as President - he is my President now, and I'll support him. I also did a lot of research during the campaign - and found that I was at times embarrassed by some of the accusations of various right-wing advocates - I've disowned them, but not my conservative ideas. Much of the fault lies in the previous administration I think - perhaps with the best of intentions, but often with the poorest of ideas and common sense. Well, I think that's all I'll say about the political arena here - I tend to avoid it (or at least posting to them) on Wikipedia. There's nothing anyone can say that's going to change my mind on things - only actions will convince me of Obama's quality. And as far as trying to convince anyone of my thoughts ... I'd be wasting my time.
I truly wish you success at the RfA, but I do know you're in for a bumpy ride - but I'm sure you can handle anything that's thrown at you - that's why I think you'll make a good admin. ! ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 03:20, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Whatever happens, happens. Regarding Obama, he's basically toeing the liberal line, and everyone who has bothered to study his record knew he would. Whether he'll be able to fix anything or not remains to be seen. There's only so much the President can do. Basically, he's in the midst of trying to do everything he said he would. And he might be biting off more than he can chew. But nobody ever said being President was easy. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 03:40, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
And as regards "my President"... Whether I like a given President or not, he's our guy, we chose him, and nobody around the world better mess with him... be it Obama, Clinton, the Bushes, Reagan, etc. So call me a patriot. I can handle it. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 03:43, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Welcome to ARS!

Hi, Ched, welcome to the Article Rescue Squadron!

Here to help articles tagged for rescue!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying and rescuing articles that have been tagged for deletion. Every day hundreds of articles are deleted, many rightfully so. But many concern notable subjects and are poorly written, ergo fixable and should not be deleted. We try to help these articles quickly improve and address the concerns of why they are proposed for deletion. This covers a lot of ground and your help is appreciated!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

regarding this vote- it seems very ambiguous. If it exceeds notwebhost surely you think it should be deleted right? --DFS454 (talk) 10:10, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Not really - I don't think the page should be deleted. I'm strong on the "Keep" part there - it's a moot point because the user blanked the page - no reason to delete it! The history part I'm less clear on because that is an admin task I wouldn't want to pass judgment on. There is no way I'd want to see something like that in article space, but I tend to be much more tolerant of user space. Deleting pages in user space (while they do belong to Wikipedia), just crosses the WP:BITE line as far as I'm concerned. (Excluding the notable exceptions of copyvio, legal issues, attack pages and blatant spam articles) I hope that clears up my feelings on the matter, and feel free to copy this to the MfD if it helps clarify my !vote. Re: the (deleted) article "Eat a salad"

This is regarding this comment: I marked that article as an attack because it contained a list of names and declared them to be "retards". I'm not certain why you consider me marking the page as an attack to be ironic. If you instead consider the article itself to be ironic, I have to disagree because it was pretty clearly vandalism...unless you're suggesting the vandal who created it was overweight and could do with some healthy greens...  :) Flopsy Mopsy and Cottonmouth (talk) 08:14, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

NASCAR, eh? Well, I'm not much of a racing fan, but I know folks who are fans, and they love it through and through. I sometimes tell people that NASCAR might be the most popular sport in America, and they laugh, but this much I know: In the south, at least, on weekends when there's a racing event, it gets top billing on the sports segment. It's a sport filled with colorful personalities, kind of like pro wrestling except it's for real. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 02:06, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Rex White

First of all, I invite you to join me at WikiProject NASCAR! The Heidelberg Raceway article is still waiting in the suggestions area - it'll be at least a day before it runs (probably at least 2). This is normal and there's no need for alarm. I reviewed the Rex White article, and it easily meets the 5x expansion already! You should propose it under March 12, the date that expansion began. You don't need to be done to propose it, so I'd do it now. I like the hook with shortest person to win the championship. Made sure you be clear that this is now the Sprint Cup Series, even if you hide that in a Wikilink. Royalbroil 05:18, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Welcome to WP:NASCAR! I noticed you were an Earnhardt fan. I wasn't and I'm not interested in developing that article. Otherwise I would have done it already. I'm not trying to be rude, just honest and forthright. In any case, whenever you feel ready, that might be a good article for you to attack as your first GA. I'd be willing to help coach you. You might find it most beneficial for you and I to collaborate on a different article first. Having your hands in an article is the best teacher. I had User:4u1e help me with my first GA, Mario Andretti. The Formula One parts of the article had been done and his IndyCar career was about 2 sentences long. Oh the tragedy! I knew he deserved much better. The most important thing is to find high quality reliable sources and build the article from them. I learned that lesson from the failed Alan Kulwicki Featured Article attempt. I won't be surprised if Tim Richmond's article is already near FA level. Royalbroil 18:43, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
I was warming up to Dale at the end of his life, I admit that I wasn't sad to hear that his car had been pushed into the wall at the Daytona 500. I got profoundly sad to hear that he had passed in the incident. So you can say his name, no problems. He was an awesomely talented racer! I'll help coach you on that article if it's one of your priorities. It should be an extremely high priority for WP:NASCAR. I won't be on the 'pedia much today anymore. Just giving you some input and things to think about.
I saw Kyle Busch race 3 times last year at local Wisconsin tracks! I'm not a fan, but I was very impressed with how he handled himself. He was very polite and gracious to the fans and he threw the trophy for winning the WIR weekly event into the crowd! Very impressive! Royalbroil 19:30, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

User Rudreswara

I noticed the message you recently left to a newcomer. Please remember: do not bite the newcomers. If you see someone make a common mistake, try to politely point out what they did wrong and how to correct it. Thank you. . They've created a valid new page, though it was poorly made and I've put some time in to knock it into shape - I doubt their intention is vandalism. Fences and windows (talk) 07:26, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Responded, - Now, I'll admit, ''perhaps I jumped the gun. Hopefully the user will review the policy and guideline pages, at least the basics, and there won't be anymore confusion. I noticed that you also left 2 previous warnings in template format, and my third warning is pretty standard issue in these cases. However, I removed the 3rd warning and replaced with not only a welcome message, but a personalized apology as well - due solely to your {{uw-bite}} template. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why the user did not heed the previous warnings, and at least contact someone in response to those warnings. It occurs to me that most users, new or not, when confronted with 2 warnings about the edits they are making - that they would want to stop introducing unacceptable material into articles. Wikipedia is not a playground, and if the user wanted to experiment with introducing edits which obviously did not belong in the article - s/he should have been doing so in user space. And the closer I look, the more I have my doubts.

and then

  • this (after already being told it wasn't acceptable.)

just seems questionable to me - sorry.

I am all for not biting, and for welcoming new users - I have been on the receiving end of some bites as well. I'm glad you took the time to look into the matter, and I will watchlist the users contribs for a bit, and see where it goes.

On one closing note, while I'm far from being a seasoned veteran, I would have hoped that my contributions would exclude me from the newbie warning templates, - I noticed a page some time back, and hoped that I was within the Wikipedia:Don't template the regulars region, but I guess you don't agree. Well, that's just my thoughts on the matter, all IMHO as they say. I admire your efforts to be welcoming to the new users, and I wish you Kind Regards. — Ched ~ (yes?) 09:01, 14 March 2009 (UTC) (cc: UT)

Apologies, I didn't know about Don't template the regulars! I also hadn't seen them making the same mistake after being reverted, which is much more like vandalism. Fences and windows (talk) 09:12, 14 March 2009 (UTC) p.s. There's even a template warning for DTTR (rolls eyes) Fences and windows (talk) 09:15, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

ahhh ... ok, thought maybe you were thinking I was trying to be cute or something - like the "carrots" addition to the sig too. — Ched ~ (yes?) 00:32, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
I've seen more and more editors attaching "contributions" (a generous term if there ever was one) to their signatures, so I gave it a try. I figured saying "Victory garden" would have been both too pretentious and too obscure. And since many readers can't recognize a joke when they see one, I didn't want to take any chances. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 00:49, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
hmmm ... garden - Bugs & Fudd - the haircut clip where greenery sprouts from Elmers head - Classical music ... damn, I know there's a great one liner in there somewhere - guess I'm just too tired to find it ... lol. I'll "Figero" it all out tomorrow. - (ewww, yuck - I know I can do better than that!) :D — Ched ~ (yes?) 01:02, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Puns can't be forced, they have to arise spontaneously. And even if they're bad, they're pretty good. And if they're really bad, that's even better. "Garden" by itself would work, but "carrots" seems better rooted. Yeh, "The Rabbit of Seville" is a classic. By then there weren't any victory gardens. You do know what a victory garden is, right? That was a prevalent theme in WWII cartoons, and one of my favorites (unfortunately not on DVD yet, if ever) had Bugsy chopping down gigantic carrots in the realm of the giant, in "Jack-Rabbit and the Beanstalk". The giant pulls a gun on Bugsy - "caught ya tampering with my Victory Garden", and then tells Bugsy he's got him covered, and not to try anything - "You can't fool me - 'cause I'm a moron!" Hey, maybe I should use that as my new slogan. :) Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 01:48, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Lester Coleman v.s. Lex Coleman

I think you need to re-assess your opinion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lex Coleman. You appear to be confusing two different people: Lester Coleman and Lex Coleman. The Lex Coleman article asserts that he is a different person than Lester Coleman. Nrswanson (talk) 21:25, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I'll double-check, perhaps you're right. The only "Coleman" I'm really familiar with is the one that signed my portable stove. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 21:30, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Block question

Heh, it's kind of a running joke. The idea at the time was to drive schoolkids away for 1 year, but I get tired to redo the same blocks every year in September and January, so I added a month to that. Then I figured out I could have more fun and ended adding a very quirky length ^^ Someone noticed that was more or less 400 days, but that's not intended! -- lucasbfr talk 10:09, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

Video question

Does this video play for you? I get no sound. It's a video to demonstrate modified racing. I haven't uploaded many videos. I'm experimenting with converting the video. Royalbroil 01:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

hmmm ... plays ok, but like you - no sound. Did it play with sound on your PC, before you did the upload?— Ched ~ (yes?)/© 01:26, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
The unconverted AVI version has sound (it sounds AWESOME!), but I can't play the converted video because I don't have an OGG player. Thanks! Royalbroil 01:28, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
You can get the ogg codecs here, and an external player called VLC, which is a crossplatform player - I've used it for folks that don't have DVD player software before and it works ok. I made sure that I had the ogg codec installed, and it played other files OK, but still no sound on the modified race. Musta got lost in the translation. — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 01:39, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
This video plays correctly now with sound. I converted this file in 2007, but I can't remember how I did it. Royalbroil 01:46, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I found a different converter called Media Coder. I can hear that video here on my PC but not from internet. Does it work for you now? Royalbroil 04:49, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

←Yep - works fine now. Sorry of the delay - lost the Internet there briefly. — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 05:59, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I'm 100% sure all three are the same person; their actions are the hallmark of a novice and not very keen sockpuppeteer. I've just not cared enough to take action...I'll wait till they step over the line, because it appears they do make useful edits elsewhere. I can't figure out why they are so latched-on to keeping that plagiarised content. Regardless, I do appreciate you watching my back...I'm not the least bit ticked off. Signatures

Please do not tell new users to put big tags in signatures, seen here. It is clearly outlined in WP:SIG that such use of big tags in signatures is disrutpive.— dαlus Contribs 07:29, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

I appreciate you acknowledging the fact that I provided the link to WP:SIG in my help desk posting. Perhaps it would assist you to carefully re-read exactly what I did post on that help desk thread; then, if you still feel that I have in some way done something wrong, and your posting above is valid, I'd be happy to address your concerns. — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 14:36, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Note: To be honest, my first inclination was to lol this; however, seeing that you've gone through and re-factored another users signature on over 2 dozen talk pages, I do take your post as a "warning". — Ched ~ (yes?)/©
Alright, so you did not explicitly say that you can put big tags in signatures, instead, you cited a signature that did. I realize you cited the guideline, however, I still feel the need to stress that a specific line of text on said guideline should have been noted, specifically, the one concerning big tags.— dαlus Contribs 20:57, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Daedalus, I've reviewed a lot of material since receiving this post; and I understand that you've had difficulties with other editors, as well as with your own signature. That said, might I suggest that you be a little more careful in the future. CUTKD is new, seems to be trying very hard, is fighting vandalism just as you are, and some of your actions could be taken as quite bitey. Also, I don't believe that a <big> tag pulls quite the same resources from the servers as pulling templates and parsing functions in a signature. You may also want to note that WP:SIG is a guideline, not a policy - there is a big difference. You may also want to note the line 3 items below the big tag, about color? ... green background - green text?
I appreciate you returning to "man up", it shows me a lot. If you have any more questions, need any more clarification, or just want to stop by and say hi - then ya'all come back and visit anytime. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 21:25, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

DYK good news

I see that you have articles in back to back Did You Know queues! The Heidelberg Raceway article should appear at about 10pm Chicago time and the second one for Rex White should appear at about 4am Chicago time. A nominated an image of White's NASCAR car which will be pictured beside your expansion - you got the precious top spot! I uploaded that picture from a flickr friend and I already notified him. I might do the 10pm update (I'll get someone else to credit me for the article). I suggest that you record a list your Did You Know articles - I like how some people keep the hooks. You might want to add {{User Did You Know2}} to you userpage. I'm very proud to say that I started that template (diff) to tally my DYK articles and it has achieved widespread usage. Royalbroil 00:19, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Cool ... I added it, but I'm not sure it's displayed right. I probably won't still be up when they go up, is there anyway to get a screenshot? - the history on that front page is not something I want to mess with since it seems to just transclude other sections. Also, I did get the Tim Richmond stat table done, I'll try to get the AK one done by tomorrow evening - I may put it in your sandbox though, I'm not sure where you want to put it on the page. I was watching some of your youtube Ice racing .. now that's cool! I've never seen that in real life before. Every year I like winter less and less, but with "the Dells", WIR, and Slinger - that kind of makes up for the cold I guess ... lol. Milwaukee Mile I never got to see a good race at - ASA, and they all just went single file through the turns, Slinger on the other hand ... wow. DYK is cool, and I'm glad you've taken the time to teach me so much Royal, I do appreciate it! — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 00:53, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I fixed the template. You might want to display it on the right, look at the code on my userpage. I don't know how to get a screen shot. I've reproduced the main page for the April Fool's Main Page and it's a major pain even with the admin tools. I've already saved the main page with a feature on yahoo that I can't find anymore. I think it was called My Web or something like that. You can add the Richmond and Kulwicki stats at any time. The old version will be in the article's history.
I'm glad you enjoyed those racing videos! My favorite it the 6 lap dash at Slinger - just over one minute! That video kept me warm during the cold in December. I did like the ice racing. The best are easily the studded rear-wheel-drive. Watching what ends up to be IMCA Stockcars on ice is an experience that every racing fan should share. I've tried to get my cousins who are NASCAR fans to come. At least they came to that ASA races at the Milwaukee Mile. They need to come to Slinger. My favorite tracks are the tiny 1/4 milers. I don't watch many NASCAR races anymore, but I'm looking forward to Bristol this weekend. Too bad I have my niece's birthday party at that time. Maybe I can convince my family to turn it on. I should have went to that race instead. One of my pictures on flickr got selected by a NASCAR engine parts supplier (Mahle) to be used for their marketing. Instead of taking money for the picture [3], I opted for the free pit pass to a NASCAR race. I'm going to the Nationwide race at Milwaukee. I wanted to not drive real far to see the race. Royalbroil 01:36, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll check out the way you did it too. didn't realize I was supposed to add the pipe|2 ... lol. I'll definately check out your Flicker flics too. Richmond is done, still have AK to do .. but will soon. Bristol should be a good one, no doubt. I'll get to Erie, Jennerstown, Motordrome, Lernerville this year - not sure what else - prob. nothing NASCAR though. Free pit pass to NASCAR - you bet! lol. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 01:51, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
I watched a few televised ASA races at Jennerstown on TNN back in the day. I drove through Erie on the Interstate on my way to Niagara Falls. My main impression was driving through hard rain through Pennsylvania. It was hard to see! Royalbroil 02:00, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Ched, just for the record I placed no email addresses in the Royal Confraternity of Sao Teotonio article. I undid vandalism by another who DID include same. Perhaps I missed something? After discussion with you on my talk page, I have removed the level 4im warning from your talk page. Having brought the matter to administrative attention, it is agreed that the addition of the personal information (name and email) could have been added by a citation bot in which the edit was not recorded into article history. While I can neither deny or confirm that this was the case, I feel that the fact that the possibility exists to be enough to Assume Good Faith, and remove the warning.
I also note that there are concerns about a Conflict of interest; however, as you appear to be discussing those matters on the Royal Confraternity of Sao Teotonio talk page I will not further discuss the issue here. I also note that you appear to be approaching an edit war, and would encourage you to read Wikipedia:Three-revert rule. Perhaps you would find more success at editing other articles which you were not so personally involved in, that's just a suggestion. Either way, I wish you the best of luck with your editing at Wikipedia. — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 04:48, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi! You might be interested in the discussion at Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard#Incivil personal attacks from Malleus Fatuorum. Thank you. Ipatrol (talk) 21:32, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi ipatrol. Sorry I didn't get to posting any more to the WQA and AN/I threads before they closed - I tend to be slow in that regard, simply because I like to think things through for a while before I speak. I can certainly understand why you felt insulted. I also think it's best to put the whole thing in the past as well. I do agree that a couple editors said some things that they should not have, made snarky comments best left untyped, and treated you with a lack of respect that they shouldn't have. Not all ideas are going to be keepers, not every post we make is going to be a pearl of wisdom; but I agree that there is no need to make sarcastic hurtful remarks either here or in IRC. That said, I also don't see a benefit to calling editors on the carpet for every snide comment they make. We're all human, and we're all going to let our fingers hit the "Save" button without thinking things through on occasions. I don't know your actual physical age, and it's really not important to me to know. I also don't consider it to be relevant to building the wiki. I'd just suggest that you continue to work on adding quality edits to wikipedia, ignore the snide remarks of others, and take the high-road the best that you can when you do run into these occasional situations. Remember, an editors remarks reflect more on the person that is making the comment, than they do on the person they are commenting about. I hope things work out well for you ipatrol, and try not to hold a grudge. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 06:10, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey Hey

Thanks for the good word, Ched! Yeah, I just can't quite bring myself to leave Wiki alone entirely, so I do the occasional "maintenance" edit now and again. As for the 9-11 project, I have the first two hours of coverage (08:31 to 10:36) of the four major networks (ABC//NBC//CBS//FOX) on four DVDs. Again, it's kind of weird watching all of this again after so long, since I was in Korea when it happened, and only picked up on the coverage on CNN after the reports of fire at the Pentagon. What's even weirder is sitting and watching the ABC DVD. It starts out with GMA already in-progress, and it's like being in front of the tv on THAT morning, the picture is just that good...

I'll catch ya online again soon! Edit Centric (talk) 02:04, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

The vid sounds great! Yea, as much as there are certain sections and editors that contain negative aspects - all in all I think Wiki is a good place, with mostly good people, providing a good and valuable service. Oh .. and Edit ... in case I've neglected to say this before "I greatly appreciate your service to our country." My dad served in Korea when he was a young man; but, my coming of age came at the end of the Viet Nam war, after the draft had ended. The Air Force didn't want me for a pilot because of my poor eye-sight, and for many other reasons - I failed to provide my services to any of our wonderful military forces. I do have the utmost respect, admiration, and gratitude for the men and women who have, do, and will serve our great country.
I can imagine that re-watching the 9/11 vids can elicit a great deal of emotion for you. I'm also glad you can't leave the wiki alone, your contributions are simply not easily replaced. I look forward to keeping in touch no matter how often or in what way you visit and continue to contribute to our wiki-culture. Have a wonderful day/evening/week/month/year! ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 05:51, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Gimp

Just wanted to drop a note saying thanks! for telling me about Gimp; it's an awesome photoshopping application and I am using it extensively. I also used it to extract Norton Internet Security's icon. TechOutsider (talk) 12:22, 28 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I've been looking to improve on Paint.NET. Does this software allow you to adjust the lightness and/or contrast on specific spots on an image, for instance the "burn" feature in Fireworks? Screen shots don't do a program justice. Royalbroil 12:33, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Out of its numerous features, I would expect the feature to be there. You can try it here; its the portable version (no installation). http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable
Yep. If you select the area you want to adjust .. then go to the "Colors" .. Brightness and contrast - it will adjust only what you have selected. I have to confess though, I had to look to make sure. I still use an old version of PSP (Paint Shop Pro) that's prolly 8 years old - back when JASC still owned the program - and I'll use Corel Draw/Paint from time to time as well. I can't say much about Paint.NET since I've only looked at it briefly, it seems robust enough, I'm just not familiar enough with it to know my way around the different features. One thing that I do like about Gimp, is what TechOutsider mentions - the portability feature. I have it on one of my thumbdrives, so never need to install - just plug it in and go. Have to admit, I never knew about the extracting icons though - I'll have to check that out, were they in the .exe, a .dll, or a .icl? — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 16:51, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Well I used Snagit 9 by TechSmith to capture the Icon. I then used Gimp to remove the background colors. Very effective. No, Gimp cannot extract icons from .exe, .dll, or .icl files. I tried an icon extractor and it didn't work. Had to a little manual work, however it was very rewarding. Just love noting each X and Y coordinate to get a perfect image. Ched, you can see the icons here and here TechOutsider (talk) 19:17, 28 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
I'm looking to improve my photo editing software, not improve the article. Sounds like a winner, I'll give it a try. I'm big into IT as a recent IT-Networking graduate, but I know how installing and removing programs really screws up an installation. I try to keep my computer real stagnant but not testing software on it. I want it to be able to boot in 1 or 2 minutes like it does now. I hate how my old computer used to take 10 minutes to start. I'm probably reformating/reinstalling tomorrow as we are expecting a major winter storm in Wisconsin - my internet connection will most likely be down starting in maybe 5 hours. Royalbroil 20:18, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
That was my mentality earlier. Now, I just pile apps on my system ... uninstall/install, yet my system still boots in ~30 seconds. 1 or 2 minutes sounds excessive ... TechOutsider (talk) 21:57, 28 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

My RfA

First of all, thanks for taking the time to look through my contributions and give some feedback. Second I'd like to address admincoachgate. To be perfectly frank, I'd forgotten that particular line in the agreement I made. Of course, "ignorance of the law is no excuse," and this is doubly true when you've actually agreed to something. Self-nomming for the RfA was a lapse a judgment, but I had no idea how strongly the community would respond. As you point out, I essentially broke my word, and that was a mistake. I've considered withdrawing the RfA, and you make a good point that WP:ER may be a better place to go, rather than letting the debacle continue to unfold at my RfA. I imagine this all more or less a moot point, as a bureaucrat will probably close the RfA before too much more time passes unless some unexpected surge of support appears.

While many of the comments on the RfA indicate a condemnation of my decision to run, I'd just like to say that all of my actions were in good faith. I sincerely believe that I would make a good administrator, and that my edit history is sufficient to demonstrate this to the community. It would absolutely have been the best course of action to discuss the matter with KnightLago first, as you point out, but as we all know hindsight is 20/20. My only reason for doing what I did was a genuine desire to help the project, and a frustration with the current administrative backlog. As such, I was acting in the spirit of WP:IAR, and just trying to improve the encyclopedia. It appears, however, that I ignored the wrong rules, and for that I am also sorry. I am discussing the situation with Cool3, thank you for the note though. KnightLago (talk) 00:19, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
I am very, very glad to see this working out so well. Cool3, I admire your ability to face such harsh criticize with a calm demeanor, and proceed in such a mature fashion. As for KnightLago, while I wasn't around at the time you had your RfA - I think I can see why you passed with such flying colors. Please, if I don't notice the next RfA - drop me a line, and I will be very pleased to support. On a side note, I do apologize for being so critical - in retrospect, I should not have posted to the RfA at all. In fact, if I'd have known there was going to be such an outpouring of oppose votes, I would have either stayed neutral, or not posted at all. My very best to both ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 01:16, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Firefox

Looking at the FF article, I think it's time that NIS became a GA. The FF article is a little technical, although jargon are wikilinked. Some sections in the FF article are comprised of one or two sentence paragraphs. And they have a long embedded list. TechOutsider (talk) 13:38, 29 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I hadn't really gone through it that closely yet - but I did see that you addressed all the items on the last review. I trust your judgment, if you think it's ready, nothing wrong with giving it another shot. ;) — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 13:55, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
I'll be closing the peer review once you are done. No need for you to rush. Is there a waiting period between a peer review and a GA nomination? TechOutsider (talk) 15:30, 29 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
Edit: No waiting period. TechOutsider (talk) 15:35, 29 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider
It's entirely up to you, I might want to leave it for a week or two - see if anyone else picks up on something we're not seeing. — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 20:32, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Really want to get done with the NIS article before spring break is over. TechOutsider (talk) 16:34, 30 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

GA

Hi Ched. I was reading the GA nomination process and details and found some concerning details. It stated something along the lines of the article must meet requirements set by the wikipjts it applies to. Norton Internet Security for Mac has been around for almost a decade, if not more than a decade. I cannot really find much information though. So, if NIS is rated as GA class, it will only be a GA class article in the WikiPjt Computer Security/Software/Computing categories, not the Mac category? TechOutsider (talk) 15:57, 29 March 2009 (UTC)TechOutsider

I'll need to look a little closer to be sure, but I'm wondering if you're trancluding category with projects. I think that once an article makes GA, the category really isn't an issue. I would think that NIS would fall under the Wikipedia:WikiProject Computing as far as assessment. Maybe here would be the place to ask? — Ched ~ (yes?)/© 20:38, 29 March 2009 (UTC) (cc: to TO's UT)
addendum added:
My understanding is that category is basically just a file system to find articles of a similar nature. The project, sort of defines how the GA standards apply to an article that would fall under that particular group of articles. You couldn't really use the guidelines from a person WP:BLP for an article about software. The basics for GA would always apply. Is the lead well writen? Is the subject explained in enough detail? Is it stable, no edit wars? Are the resources and references good ones and are they used properly?. I'm sorry I haven't spent more time on the NIS article yet - I've been reading up on sock puppets and have a few other articles I'm researching - but I will look in more detail soon. Do you want me to just "edit" or put suggestions on the peer review page? Might want to get a few other opinions from peer review too, since I've edited the article before. And good to talk to you again too!! OK - I've gotta run for a bit, but I'll try to get some of the NIS stuff done before I hit the sack tonight.Ched ~ (yes?)/© 23:04, 29 March 2009 (UTC)
Tech, I think what you mean is that a Good Article should follow the standards set by its relevant WikiProjects. These standards have nothing to do with the categories that the article belongs to. A good example is an article about a Formula One driver should include the WP:F1 standard infobox that show's the driver's race results. Royalbroil 04:45, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the follow up. A couple of editors have offered to nominate me but at the moment things are a little too busy for me to devote the time necessary to the RfA process. Maybe in a month or so... – ukexpat (talk) 19:33, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Text between two tables

Thanks Ched. I'd started by using http://people.fas.harvard.edu/~sdouglas/table.cgi which was fine but maybe I messed up a ′cut&paste′.
Are there other converters/templates & instructions out there for tables on wiki?Frisasu (talk) 20:03, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

In all honesty, it's my first time too, so I really can't give any advice. Just use your discretion and common sense, and you should be fine. bibliomaniac15 23:57, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
