Former good articleNouakchott was one of the Geography and places good articles, but it has been removed from the list. There are suggestions below for improving the article to meet the good article criteria. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Editors may also seek a reassessment of the decision if they believe there was a mistake.

From Khartoum:first section: "The city proper has a population of well over a million inhabitants, making it the second largest city in the country, but forms with its neighbours, linked by bridges, Khartoum North (al-Khartūm Bahrī) and Omdurman (Umm Durmān) a metropolis with a population totaling over four million.".......This Saharan city seems larger than Nouakchott. --McTrixie/Mr Accountable 19:06, 21 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question for anyone: On Google Earth, the city of Nouakchott appears to be getting swallowed by the Sahara desert. How long has that been going on? You can see cars driving around and the airport is active, as if people just ignore the encroaching desert.--Johnreep 02:29, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well, for quite some time. There used to be some kind of a Green Belt to protect the city from the dunes, but now it's been built over. It's an extremely rapidly growing city. The alarming part actually is not so much the desert taking over (people are used to that in Mauritania, they just move a little further and build anew), it's more that the Dunes Belt protecting the city from the sea (Nouakchott is below sea level) has been taken away as construction material!--SidiLemine 10:49, 13 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation?

edit

Could anyone provide an indication of the pronunciation of this word (preferably in IPA)? --babbage 04:22, 17 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't know IPA, but recently returned from the city, where people pronounced it

No ack shot

No = opposite of yes

ack = as in acknowledge

shot = as in gunshot

The accent seemed to be on "ack" maybe someone else could write this up as IPA? I'm not from Mauritania, but hope it helps. --Tomhannen 01:40, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, you would have to choose between the arabic pronunciation or the romanized one. It seems customary to use the romanized one, which in this case would be the French pronunciation: exactly as above, but with the "Nou" pronounced "Noo".--SidiLemine 14:01, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
new-ock-chott. cram all three words together. source: lived there for a year. Earthpigg (talk) 08:04, 15 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Moved from main space

edit

I moved this from the "Culture" section.

What is the most precious item in the either the library or the archives? Someone please answer.

What are some of the most prevalent species of fish that are caught and sold in Nouakchott? Someone please answer.

--SidiLemine 11:20, 11 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

you are misinformed. they don't have any libraries or fish. they have illiteracy and starvation. ask anyone that has been there if they disagree. the preceding comment is a joke, please disregard it. Earthpigg (talk) 08:05, 15 April 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Moved here from the article [2]: "(Note: The original language in Mauritania is the "Hassania" not berber, and most accurate translation is "lake's shell" (Nouak= shell chott= salt lake). Due to the citi is placed in a "chott" and is plenty of shells" Pavel Vozenilek (talk) 00:40, 20 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Central location?

edit

The city was selected as the capital city for its moderate climate and central location within the country. It may well have been chosen for its position in the middle of the country's coast, but central location within the country - is this a joke? Judging from the map, a location could hardly be less central than Nouakchott's. Jimmy Fleischer (talk) 21:51, 11 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

GA concerns

edit

I am concerned that this article no longer meets the good article criteria. Some of my concerns are listed below:

  • Many sections are quite short for a city article, such as "Sport" and "Economy". I suggest that these be expanded upon.
  • There are uncited statements in the article, including the entire "Sport" section.
  • The "History" section stops at 2013, and most of the recent information about its history is population figures, which is already described in the "Demographics" section
  • There is a large "Further reading" section, and more sources at Timeline of Nouakchott. Can these be incorporated as inline citations in the article?

Is anyone willing to address these concerns, or should this go to WP:GAR? Z1720 (talk) 03:39, 1 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
