Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Update from President, WANZ

The WANZ Committee did not meet in January but work continued to progress. We're delighted to welcome two new committee members. Kowhaiarewhana and Avocadobabygirl are well-known members of our community and will provide useful viewpoints as we develop the forward plan of our affiliate for 2024/25. The addition of these two committee members expands our committee to the maximum allocation of 9 people permitted under our constitution. These leaders join existing board members Einebillion (President), Giantflightlessbirds (Vice President), Marshelec (Treasurer), Noracrentiss (Secretary), Pakoire, Schwede66, and MurielMary.

Kowhaiarewhana
Kowhaiarewhana is a multidisciplinary artist, Pasifika advocate and independent researcher of Niuean (Alofi, Hikutavake), Tahitian, Māori (Ngāti Porou, Ngāpuhi), Italian and Hungarian descent. She began editing Wikipedia when she was involved in the Creative New Zealand Wikipedian in Residence project led by Pakoire in 2022. Kowhaiarewhana administers the talawiki website, presented at the World of Wikipedia event in Sydney in 2023, and was a performer and attendee at Wikimania 2023 Singapore.
Avocadobabygirl
Avocadobabygirl is the Digital Outreach Manager for the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. She has developed tools and workflows to share Te Papa’s collections, data, and research on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. She works with Te Papa’s curators and content creators to encourage them to engage with Wikimedia projects as outreach channels for specialist subject knowledge. With Stitchbird2, she runs a regular staff lunchtime Wikipedia meetup. Avocadobabygirl was a presenter at Wikimania Singapore and is a regular attendee to the Wellington meet-up.

The elections for positions on the committee will be held at the Annual General Meeting planned for April 2024. The committee has also launched the WANZ website https://www.wikimedia.nz/ and we're currently working on the draft business plan and budget for the 2024/25 financial year ready for submission to the ESEAP grants committee by 14 March. We're having a committee away day on Friday 9 February to progress this. There's an opportunity to provide ideas on our private Facebook group or in this session later on. The President and Executive Advisor are working on organising the annual WikiCon - registrations are available but programme is still under development. Links below. The committee are also working on getting WANZ to chapter status. We are currently a user group affiliate and we'd like to be a chapter. This is progressing.

Update from Treasurer, WANZ

Our financial year is the calendar year, so it is now time to prepare the annual financial statements for 2023. We have begun the work on this, and the report will be ready for the annual general meeting. At balance date, we have a large unspent portion of the WMF General Support Grant for the 2023-24 period. Our report for 2023 will show the liability of the unspent grant, and the commitments we have made for expenditure against the grant, as at balance date. We are in a strong position, and are keen to receive good proposals from the community for funding initiatives.Marshelec (talk)

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2023

There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref. There is also a video on how to add thesis to people's pages. This work is ongoing and could use more editors to help out.

Planning any Activities or Organising for July 2024 to June 2025?

The WANZ committee is working on the business plan and budget for 2024-2025 and having an away day on Friday 9th of February. We're wanting to make sure that we are placed to support the editors and the organisers of the community. Do you have any feedback for the committee? Is there anything you're planning on doing that you will need funding support for? Einebillion will take notes and provide them back to the committee to input into the plan.

  • Ambrosia10 is planning to apply for funding to attend in person the joint TDWG/SPNHC conference to be held in Okinawa, Japan 2-6 September 2024.
  • Ambrosia10 is still keen to do some wikipedia editing events at Ōtari-Wilton's Bush on New Zealand species. Likely to be held in the New Zealand autumn.

  • Alexeyevitch - Spent alot of time on Wikipedia these past few weeks, doing the usual copyediting, vandalism patrol and pending changes reviewing, he has been working on New Zealand National parks, and he's extensively expanded the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park article. He's looking foward to attending the meetups in Christchurch.
  • Ambrosia10 (talk) has been busy! - The Wikidata:WikiProject International Botanical Congress is full steam ahead after both I and User:S.v.mering obtained funding from the Wikimedia Foundation to attend the conference. User:Stitchbird2 was the instigator of this project and has recently submitted both an abstract to the conference dealing with wiki outreach and also a Wikidata workshop proposal to be provided by our group. Our main aim for the WikiProject is to hold a Wikidata workshop for 50 botanists to teach them about Wikidata. Further information on the project, meetings and progress can be found at Wikidata:WikiProject IBC 2024. As part of this I've been starting to "Wikify" the International Botanical Congress working through the invited speakers, organisers and advisors of the Congress that have bios on the congress website enriching Wikidata and where possible their Wikipedia articles. Over the last week or so this has been my priority. Also my Women Genera group has had an abstract accepted for the IBC conference.
- I've accepted the nomination to be the chairperson of the BHL-Wiki working group. I now chair meetings between Wiki editors, the Wikimedia Foundation and BHL and attempt to organise and support work being undertaken by these groups to improve the Wiki-BHL ecosystem. Further information on this work can be found at WikiProject BHL. We are also in the process of creating a new BHL metawiki page. These Wiki-BHL meetings are open to anyone interested and information can be found here. As a result of getting this chairperson position I've been invited to attend either in person or virtually at the BHL annual general meeting to be held in Chicago in May. Some funding may be able to be provided by BHL and I'll be discussing this at the next Wiki-BHL meeting to see if I can also get funding from the Wikimedia Foundation to attend the annual general meeting in person.
- I've also put in a funding application to Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand for a three month pilot project at Te Papa. If I get funding I'll create a WikiProject page for this project and include links to it both on the WikiProject Te Papa page as well as the WikiProject Research Expedition page.
- I've been continuing to attend the Hidden Figures project meetings where we are currently making progress of the Wikidata module for the Course based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) course. This should be finalised in the next couple of weeks and then forwarded to our wider group for feedback. We've also recently been in discussions about being interviewed by a podcast called BioTA.
- I've also been meeting with my Women Genera project. We're in the process of getting an analysis done for our data so that we can then write our data paper for the project. In the meantime one of my collaborators has submitted an abstract to the International Botanical Congress to present on our work.
- As for English Wikipedia editing I've been attempting to sort out the taxonomy of two more New Zealand moth genera both in Wikipedia and Wikidata as both were out of date. This is still a work in progress! Once I'm happy I'll raise a Github issue with the Catalogue of Life and attempt to get that identifier sorted which will also flow through to the GBIF identifier and then place both those in appropriate Wikidata items.
- I'm continuing to make contributions to Wikidata mix'n'match datasets of BHL creator id (I'm now over 16,000 people disambiguated and am now aiming for 20,000), as well as the Harvard Index of Botanists. The more I do this the more flow on effects I see for this work. I'd highly encourage others to get their heads around mix'n'match. Progressing on datasets IS impactful, not just for our community but also the wider world.
  • Einebillion has been working on organising the WikiCon 2024 and doing a lot of committee work in preparation for the business planning session for 2024/25 financial year. I'm having a weekly half hour one on one with Dianne to help her prioritise her work and help her navigate the Wikiverse. She is WANZ's executive advisor. I also met with the Auckland Museum summer interns and talked to them about the wider administrative set up of affiliates and Wikimedia Foundation and how that works. I also informed them on how to become members of the affiliate / incorporated society and what funding opportunities are available to them.
  1. Talked to the Auckland Museum summer interns this week about the thesis project and Wikidata/Wikipedia interactions. I hope I didn't overwhelm them, they asked some great questions and seem to have been having a very productive summer.
  2. The OpenRefine Train-the-trainers course is progressing - things have been quiet but we had a couple of calls with some really useful details on what has worked well and not so well for trainers in the past. I also had a cocktail meetup with Pru Mitchell in Melbourne which was lovely.
  3. I committed to trying to get all the NZ women professors into Wikipedia this year (currently just under 120 to go, although it's something of a moving target as we don't have a complete list, and I occasionally find more to add to it). I'm going to have a good go at #1woman1day this year (I managed 31 new bios in January, so, so far so good!), and am spurred on by having won a physical barnstar from Women in Red for the education event, which is winging it's way to me in Dunedin. Did I mention the importance of swag? ;)
  4. Am providing support one-on-one to a NZ editor to audit a Wiki dataset in OpenRefine.
  5. Have done a massive amount of author matching on the thesis project, as I did a reconciliation with Orcid and created almost a thousand new records for people who have an Orcid and a thesis but who weren't already in Wikidata (or at least, if they were, they didn't have their Orcid applied).
  6. I nominated Carol Mutch for Did you know to run on 22 Feb, as she does research around schools coping with disasters, which was prompted by her experiences in Chch earthquakes.
  1. Visited Karamea in early January to finish up the West Coast Wikipedian at Large project, taking photos and taking from a donation of hundreds of wildlife shots from a local photographer: now to upload them with OpenRefine.
  2. Started the Aotearoa Wikipedian at Large project with a field trip to Cass Field Station with the UC biology students. Photographed and fixed Wikidata for numerous local spots, including the famous Cass Railway Station, created an article on the Field Station using a UC publication, taught the students about Creative Commons and open licensing, and made sure their local plant photography project on iNaturalist was using a Wikimedia-friendly licence. There are more historical photos in the Biology Department's collection to upload.
  3. Ran a training session for the Auckland Museum summer interns and helped them prep for their edit-a-thon.
  • Pakoire (talk) A brewing project is about the 30 year history Treaty of Waitangi Education in Aotearoa - it has been brewing for a while and I have a meeting next week with someone who has their PHD in this subject. It seems timely when their is so much confusion about the Treaty. It feels like a big part will be on Wikidata. I will shape and update at the end of next week. I am running an 8 week 'Lisa's Wikipedia Reading and Writing Book Club - Wellington' to build the community of arts folk known to me. An experiment. I have applied to attend and present this and about WANZ to ESEAP conference in May. I am writing one women / non-binary article a week as part of Women in Red - and am enjoying it.   • Paora Has worked on the New Year Honours - up early and linking all folk who had articles. User:Thneed did Wikidata. Adding Post nominals. Couple of Knights or Dames also got stubs as a result of this. He has also been keeping with the notable NZ's recently deceased, see the 2024 in New Zealand article. Also has been trying to keep up with the new New Zealand articles ie tidying them up etc. Other than that he's been having a nice relaxing summer.
  • CopperAlchemy Has been supporting committee and events that are happening. She feels she needs to come to meetings to learn more about editing. She is also curious how to handle contentious pages.
  • Quilt Phase - He's been getting married! Getting back into things. On the call to here CopperAlchemy with the Wellington Picture This Wikicommons event that is coming up. 2 sessions introduction to photographers to Wikicommons. First session what is commons, what is copyright, and talking photos. 6 weeks later uploading them into commons and reusing on Wikipedia. Flyer is currently being produced. The main aim is to encourage 3 - 4 new members of groups like this and to become regular contributors to wikicommons. Current pressing issue is how to correctly do the attribution for the flyer.
  • Leigh - had question about how to edit articles that are partially protected.

Review of questions raised during round table

  • A new editor is seeking guidance on working on the page Traditional Chinese medicine in a way that acknowledges new research, learning and information on the topic. How do we handle contentious pages? There was a discussion on this topic with various editors suggesting that she gain Wiki experience on less contentious pages before diving in to those that are more difficult. If she is still keen editors suggested she run her edits through the article talk page since the article she is interested in likely wont allow her to edit it directly as it is partially protected.
There was a further discussion about traditional knowledge in Wikipedia and Einebillion pointed out the interesting approach taken in the Wikipedia article on traditional medicine and traditional knowledge and western science. It was pointed out in discussions that traditional knowledge tends not to be well documented and yet Wikipedia replies on written sources. This is a barrier to this knowledge being covered in Wikipedia, and also there are ownership/sovereignty issues, with the owners and guardians of knowledge not necessarily wanting to share publicly. There might also be different versions of indigenous knowledge. All considerations when creating or editing such articles.
This led onto a discussion about new contributions and users. And there was also a further discussion with Alexeyevitch discussing his anti-vandalism work and how he handles contributions that could possibly be classed as vandalism. Editors recognised it can be hurtful if your edits are reverted, but if they unsourced and irrelevant to the article they should be. Alexeyevitch and Marshelec both try to be measured and also recommend using talk page on a tricky issues. Einebillion mentioned the Article: FAFSWAG which was tagged as having a tone that was proportional. There was a portion of the article where the group was part of very big arts festival. The sentence mentioned that the NZ media didn’t pick up story. It’s not that what has been expressed is wrong but how it’s been expressed. Einebillion rewrote this portion of the article explaining that a report was produced on this festival and addresses the fact that participants weren't covered in New Zealand media. Example of how an article can be edited to ensure the article has encyclopaedic tone.
  • Marshelec had discussion about a draft article on Jason Xenakis and how the editor is using content from a website that the editor wrote. Einebilion suggested he openly licence the original website using a creative commons licence and then use the Creative Commons text attribution template. This would sort out the copying of his own content but his content would still have to obtain appropriate references in Wikipedia. Ambrosia10 suggested Marshelec raise this article with the WikiProject Philosophy group.
