Lord Boston

edit

Your reversion of me wasn't a reversion of mistaken good faith edit: it was no mistake. At the time I reverted you, there was no source provided in those articles, your edit summaries, or Boston's article, and no web articles mentioned the death (which is still true. Nor was he listed at dead at Parliament's website (that at least has changed). Even now, the article only has a reference to page 55 today's Times without a title of any kind, and again, it and the mention of his death only appeared after you were reverted. Your edit summary mentions the Daily Telegraph as a source, but it is not included anywhere on Wikipedia. Next time you decide to declare someone dead, be sure to provide a source somewhere, preferably at the subject's article. There have been embarrassing false death edits at Wikipedia, and it is our duty as editors to ensure that any claim that a person has died is backed up by reliable sources to avoid additional embarrassment for us and more importantly spare undue stress on people who know the subject and receive false information from us, directly or indirectly. -Rrius (talk) 17:36, 27 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Dashes for date ranges

edit

I'm not sure whether you are the same person as the IP editor who has noted deaths of Privy Counsellors at List of Privy Counsellors (1952–present); if you aren't, please disregard this. When making a date range such as 1966—2011, please use a dash, not a hyphen, to join the dates. If you use a Mac, the code is Option-hyphen; on a PC, it is Alt-0150 (on a laptop, you may also need to press Fn). In Wikipedia, you can also make an en dash by clicking the first dash after "Insert" below the Save button when editing a page. In a page such as the one I mentioned, you can also copy an existing dash from elsewhere. Finally, you can type & ndash; (without the space after the "&") between the numbers. -Rrius (talk) 16:49, 2 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Robin Williams (canoer)

edit

Hi Rcb1,

are you sure you have assigned the MBE title to the correct Robin Williams? In the document you provided as source material it says Robin Williams is a rowing coach. The Robin Williams you edited is a former slalom canoeist. Those are two very different sports and I am not sure these two are one and the same person.

Categorisation

edit

Thank you for your recent work for Wikipedia. I see that you have added 'Actors from Surrey' to many articles. A lot of these are already cat'd by the towns they are from. As this page explains "each categorized page should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs. This means that if a page belongs to a subcategory of C (or a subcategory of a subcategory of C, and so on) then it is not normally placed directly into C". That is to say, if Plath is put in the cat of 'American women poets', she should not also go in 'poets', 'American poets', or 'American writers', which are parent categories. The idea is that if you are looking via category, you go to the parent category first, say, 'Poets', then you see there 'poets by Nationality'. You can then see 'American poets' and finally 'American women poets'. It's a 'tree based' approach. It would be helpful if you went back and checked which actors' articles were already cat'd by town and removed Surrey cat (to save the work of some sap like me). I recently relocated to the country and haven't remembered to update my user page in that respect. Besides, its a joke column, as it shows with the (on Google Maps ;)) bit.I don't view it as my job, I have OCD and get agitated when my routine gets intervened with. I concede when I'm wrong, but here, it's a pattern, it's what I do and have for two years. And citing your revert as vandalism is wrong, I agree. I was just angered. Another editor, Vandelack or something back in 2011 would revert me each and every time. Deaths in month

edit

Thank you for your many contributions to Wikipedia, including various Deaths in (month year) articles. I have noticed that you have made many edits where you strip out useful reference material. For example your edit of 00:12, 24 November 2015 of Deaths in December 2011 stripped out useful reference info on 7 entries. I believe Wikipedia favors more rather than less reference material. I base this on WP:CITEHOW, which says

Citations for newspaper articles typically include:
  • byline (author's name), if any
  • title of the article within quotation marks
  • name of the newspaper in italics
  • city of publication (if not included in name of newspaper), in parentheses
  • date of publication (the "{{Cite news}}" template places the date after the byline if there is one)
  • page number(s) are optional
...
Citations for World Wide Web pages typically include:
  • URL of the webpage – that is the URL of the webpage where the referenced content can be found, not, e.g., the main page of a website when the content is on a subpage of that website (see Wikipedia:Shallow references)
  • name of the author(s)
  • title of the article within quotation marks
  • title or domain name of the website
  • publisher, if known
  • date of publication
  • page number(s) (if applicable)
  • the date you retrieved (or accessed) the webpage (required if the publication date is unknown)

If you know of a Wikipedia policy supporting the changes you made, please share it here. Otherwise, please do not make any more edits like the one under discussion. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 05:34, 30 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Michael Proctor (botanist)

edit

Hi - you've really upset me by your edit today to Michael Proctor (botanist). Not that by adding a note of his death was in any way wrong from a Wikipedia perspective - it's just that MCF Proctor was one of my botany lecturers at University who, forty years ago, inspired me to spend all of my own working life in the field of natural history and especially botany. I was motivated a couple of years back to write to him and tell him about his influence, having just published a county-based Flora which took 18 years of data collecting. He seemed genuinely delighted that I should contact him, and it seems somehow very fitting that I found out of his passing through your edit here on Wikipedia. Lord Brabourne as courtesy title

edit

You removed the note that Earl Mountbatten of Burma's son could choose Lord Brabourne or Lord Romsey as a courtesy title with the claim that "Lord Brabourne is not a courtesy title". That this had not been a courtesy title before is irrelevant...now that it has the same substantive holder as an earldom,it is,as a barony older than Romsey and not of the same name as the earldom,is the subsidiary peerage that would be expected to become the first choice as courtesy title for the heirs of the present earl and his descendants holding the title. When the 3rd Duke of Fife inherited the title of Earl of Southesk on the death of his father, his son straightaway changed his courtesy title of Earl of Macduff that he had borne since birth to Earl of Southesk. When the 1st Marquess of Linlithgow received that title his former principal title of Earl of Hopetoun became the courtesy title for heirs apparent of holders of that marquessate. So also when the 3rd Earl Grosvenor became 1st Marquess of Westminster. That's just the way it's done.I'd be surprised if the Knatchbull Earls Mountbatten did not use their family's longtime title as their preferred courtesy title henceforward.12.144.5.2 (talk) 07:38, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Rcb1. I wanted to let you know that I have reverted a number of your recent edits related to broken external links in references. Please do not delete them. Very often the broken links can be repaired, replaced with links to archived copies, or replaced with suitable equivalent links. However, when you simply delete a reference because of a broken link, the reference becomes lost. Ropner Baronetcy

edit

Hi Rcb1, I wonder if you could clarify your source that Henry Ropner, of Thorpe Perrow, has been given the title of "Sir"? I may be wrong, but a hereditary title is not a given, but must be proved through The Standing Council of the Baronetage. If you read their section on "Succession to a Baronetcy" it is explained there. Therefore, as the title is still not official on the Standing Council's list, and not wanting Wikipedia to be incorrect in their information, may I suggest you remove the word "Sir" or Henry altogether. I only wish to bring this to your attention for fear of you putting someone as a "Sir" who is not legally entitled to be until proven, so please forgive me if your information is from a reliable source. The standard template automatically provides the correct wikilink, and makes the post-nominal letters smaller. So, for example, if you type

'''Nigel Incubator-Jones''' {{post-nominals|country=GBR|KBE|QC|DL|MP|FRS}}

you get Nigel Incubator-Jones KBE QC DL MP FRS, with each of the honours properly wikilinked. A list of the supported honors for the UK can be found at Template:Post-nominals/GBR, and the order of precedence is at List of post-nominal letters (United Kingdom). Hi Rcb1. You might want to have a look at Template:Post-nominals: this has more details about the use of the post-nom template. There are also some guidelines at WP:POSTNOM, which incudes the all or none requirement for commas (you may not have noticed the comma when you added the template to John Stollery, but just in case you didn't know). Hope this helps, Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 18:48, 10 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Post-noms

edit

Hello again! Could you please maintain the same post-nom styling as per WP:POSTNOM when you add the template? This isn't a choice but a rule settled by the Arbitration Committee, and is the same one that applies to other guideline-defined optional styles such as date formats and American vs British spellings.

The Arbitration Committee has ruled that editors should not change an article from one guideline-defined style to another without a substantial reason unrelated to mere choice of style, and that revert-warring over optional styles is unacceptable. If discussion cannot determine which style to use in an article, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.

Thanks, Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 22:24, 25 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank for doing the 100% when appropriate, but you also need to add the correct commas: eg "John Smith, CBE, FRS" or "John Smith CBE FRS" not "John Smith, CBE FRS" or "John Smith CBE, FRS". I can give more examples if you need, Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 12:48, 7 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

edit

You may be blocked from editing without further warning the next time you add unsourced material to Wikipedia, as you did at 1933. Elizium23 (talk) 17:57, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

I take GREAT offence to your baseless allegation.
To suggest that my edits were disruptive, presumably because they have no reference, is preposterous when dozens of similar entries on each of the pages are similarly formatted. Worse, as I have explained to you before, what I am doing is helping Wikipedia by unifying the births and deaths entries. So, if you delete these entries of myself, you are therefore yourself disrupting and damaging Wikipedia by failing to delete the similar entries on the births pages. At the very least in promulgating this inconsistency, you are guilty of a lack of rigour which calls into question your suitability as an administrator.
You need to explain why you consider my edits "disruptive" in the light of the above. Should you fail to do so I am minded to make a formal complaint against you.
In more than 10 years and 60,000 entries, I have never received anything remotely approaching such an intemperate threat from any other editor. So you have severely damaged my faith in Wikipedia Rcb1 (talk) 19:19, 9 January 2021 (UTC)rcb1Reply
The WP:ONUS is on you, the one adding the information, to supply reliable secondary sources, regardless of what already exists in the article (everything is required to be verifiable so eventually we have to furnish sources for everything in the article.) Elizium23 (talk) 19:32, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
First, there are verifiable sources in each of the articles on the underlying subject, to which I provide the link on each and every one of the articles I add. Second, not just the years I have edited but every year from at least 1500 to 1950 has an essentially identical page, in which the references are provided in the same way. I am explicitly mindful of the way that pages are formatted in every page I edit and strive to be consistent. Therefore I would assuredly add references on the page if they were provided for the thousands and thousands of other similar entries. They are not. To single out the few hundred edits I have made from the many tens of thousands of essentially identical edits is bizarre and itself disruptive. I contend that it you who is damaging Wikipedia by deleting bona-fide entries which enhance the pages seemingly randomly. To this once is unfortunate: to do it a second time when I have explained what I am doing is what Lady Bracknell would have called "careless." It is hard to avoid the sense that this has become a fixation, if not a vendetta. Please now desist from this most ill-judged campaign or add the references you seem to believe are needed to the births and deaths pages of each and every year which has a Wikipedia page.Rcb1 (talk) 20:01, 9 January 2021 (UTC)rcb1Reply
Wikipedia is not a WP:RS. You cannot cite an article by name, because it is user-generated content that could change at any time. Sure, the source is in the article now, but what about next week? Next year? 10 years from now? Copy the citations and place them, properly, in the article that needs the citation. Wikipedia:Other stuff exists. It doesn't matter "what everybody else is doing". Your own personal conduct is in question here. I am simply warning you so that you can do the right thing. I am not an administrator. That is all. Elizium23 (talk) 20:07, 9 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Your "warning" is unseemly and inappropriate. I would readily add references if I thought it would be helpful. But in this case, it is clear that it would only involve others in unnecessary, even fatuous, work to set such a precedence. In future, I will readily accede to your request by adding references where other similar entries on the specific page have references but I will NOT do so where it will set a precedent for the page. To do so would be ridiculous. And I will continue slowly to make the births and deaths pages consistent. Rcb1 (talk) 20:22, 9 January 2021 (UTC)rcb1Reply

Deb (talk) 15:01, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

The allegation claims that I added "unreferenced or inappropriate content." Inappropriate is plainly absurd, as what I was doing was adding in "Deaths" an entry which already existed in "Births", so that the two corresponded. If it were inappropriate, it would never have been added to "Births" or would have been quickly deleted. Unreferenced is true - but not a single other entry in that month was referenced, nor was the corresponding entry in "Births". While - in more than 60,000 edits, as a matter of course I add references where appropriate, I contend that to add a reference to that one unique entry would merely set a precedent which would create wholly unnecessary work for other editors. The entry in Births had no reference either.

Worse, prior to being blocked today, I had a bad-tempered exchange with Deb, the administrator. In response to a polite request only to revert part of the edit, if she felt she must, she sent me a silly, sarcastic and rude reply. I then made bad-tempered observation in adding the (unnecessary) reference to the edit she reverted. It seems plain that she took the action that she did in response to that. I contend that this is an abuse of her privileges as an administrator. Such behaviour is seriously detrimental to people editing Wikipedia in good faith and you should ask your yourselves if someone who behaves in such a vindictive way is a fit an proper person to be an administrator.

As it happens, I will be busy tomorrow, so I have no great concern about this temporary block. But I take grave exception to Deb's behaviour, which brings Wikipedia into disrepute for the reasons I have explained. Please ensure that this extremely unsatisfactory and unsavoury episode does not happen again - to me or to anyone else.

Your "polite request" was If you really must persist in the habit of deleting any entry without an reference - itself a dubiously useful practice when almsot almost no other similar entries in that section (or births) has a reference - at least please did not just lazily revert the other edits made at the same time, as you did with the birth date of Lloyd Gaines. Deb's reply precisely mirrored your own language: If you really must persist in the habit of creating new entries without the reference required by the guidelines, after being told previously not to do it, at least don't just lazily make other entries at the same time, as it causes additional work for others. If your comment is a "polite request", then so is Deb's. Schazjmd (talk) 21:34, 24 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I don't think you know what a category is for. How could you be an editor for 16 years and not understand that articles are put INTO categories, categories do not contain article content. Has this account been compromised? Liz Read! Talk! 01:24, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

2001

edit

Hi. I noticed your latest edit summary: "reinstated births, as only links to a category" as a reason for re-adding the whole Births section. I'm not saying I necessarily disagree with your action, but the reason seems very doubtful. Which category do you think is affected here? Deb (talk) 09:35, 19 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, Deb. The point I was trying to make, which I perhaps I didn't explain very well, is that I don't see the need to reinstate the deaths, as it links to a page which lists the deaths by date: but the births simply link to a category, which has an alphabetical list of births but not the specific dates. That seems to be useful information, which needs to be listed somewhere - and this is obvious place to put it, unless someone starts a "Births in 2001". page. Thank you for your work in this area; you have obviously spent many hours helpfully improving these pages. Rcb1 (talk) 12:29, 19 August 2023 (UTC)rcb1Reply
Okay, I see what you're getting at. Deb (talk) 13:36, 19 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for including me in this. There are 21 other essentially identical lists on such honorary fellows here: Category:Lists of Honorary Fellows of colleges of the University of Cambridge. `I don't see why Corpus should be missing from the group and feel with conviction that it should not be singled out for deletion.
