A7 request on Daniel M. Russell
Hello Sierrak28 -- I've declined your A7 request on Daniel M. Russell as there are plenty of claims in the article. Please reread the criteria carefully at A7 before requesting deletion under this criterion again. Espresso Addict (talk) 22:38, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Espresso Addict: Respectfully, I disagree. When I patrolled the article, I felt that too much of the article used self-published sources to describe Daniel Russell's work As a matter of fact, the majority of the article itself is sourced only by his CV and about page on his personal website. With this in mind, I also felt that the article didn't adequately "indicate why its subject is important or significant..." using third party sources. Finally, I believed that the article did not meet the WP:BASIC threshold for notability, given that the majority of the article relies on two self-published sources, with only two exceptions, and there wasn't any apparent "significant coverage in multiple published secondary sources that are reliable, intellectually independent of each other, and independent of the subject. Sierrak28 (talk) 00:09, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- None of this is remotely relevant to A7, which doesn't require any references at all. "The criterion does not apply to any article that makes any credible claim of significance or importance even if the claim is not supported by a reliable source or does not qualify on Wikipedia's notability guidelines." A quick google search shows Russell exists and is broadly who the article creator says he is. I do worry about conflict of interest or even paid editing based purely on the fact that the average newbie article doesn't look like that.
- I think Russell is likely to be notable under WP:PROF, based on his citation record. I've tagged the article as requiring improved sources, requested more sources at the creator's talk page and tagged it for various wikiprojects so that hopefully experts will be able to either improve or request deletion. If there's no improvement within a reasonable amount of time (a week or so) feel free to take it to Articles for Deletion. Espresso Addict (talk) 00:22, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- Also worth mentioning that I don't feel strongly enough about it to continue to seek its deletion, but I felt that a rationale describing my thought process when considering whether or not it fell under WP:CSD was necessary. Sierrak28 (talk) 00:11, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
- This essay is helpful if you genuinely don't understand the A7 criterion: Wikipedia:Credible claim of significance. Espresso Addict (talk) 00:25, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – April 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).
- 331dot • Cordless Larry • ClueBot NG
- Gogo Dodo • Pb30 • Sebastiankessel • Seicer • SoLando
- Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
- Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
- The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
- The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.
- There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.
- The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.
- A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
- The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Recent changes
- Template Wizard script available for testing. It will show up as a puzzle-piece icon in the 2010 WikiEditor. You can click on the icon to insert a template.
- The Wikimedia Communities and Contributors survey is to be sent to participants around the world this week. If you are volunteer developer, and have contributed code to any pieces of MediaWiki, gadgets, or tools, please take 20 to 40 minutes to complete the survey.
Problems
- MediaWiki deployment train has been rolled back to version 1.31.0-wmf.26 on week 13, due to a multiplication of lost connections during MySQL queries. Some of the recent changes may have not been applied. They will be deployed next week. [1][2][3]
- The Notifications badge icons were overlapping other links. This has been fixed. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 April. It will be on all wikis from 5 April (calendar).
- User subpages ending in
.json
will now be protected from other people editing them, like.js
and.css
pages already are. If you have a tool that stores static configuration, you can now use a subpage likeUser:Example/mygadget.json
to do this without concerns. [5] - Tidy will be replaced by RemexHtml on the next set of wikis. On April 4, we plan to turn off Tidy on all Wikiquotes (except frwikiquote) and Wikimedia chapters and user groups wikis. 23 wikis will have Tidy replaced this time. [6][7][8]
- AbuseFilter will transition to use OOUI starting April 4, and the rule editor will also be changed to a CodeEditor (ACE) similar to what is found on user JavaScript pages. The move to OOUI will continue over the next few weeks. [9] [10]
- In Special:Preferences, the preference "Reload the watchlist automatically whenever a filter is changed (JavaScript required)" is now only visible for users who have opt-out the New Filters for the Watchlist. [11]
- You can see names of individual abuse filters in Special:AbuseLog. Now if the name of an abuse filter contains some wikisyntax like links, it will not change to a link when displayed. [12]
- You can now search through filter patterns at Special:AbuseFilter. You may specify either a plain string or a regular expression and the matching filters will show a snippet of their pattern with the match highlighted. [13]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 3 April at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 4 April at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- If you're using, creating or improving Lua modules, you can give your feedback to help harmonizing the modules across wikis and add more useful functions.
- On April 11th, we plan to turn off Tidy on all wikis with less than 50 entries in all high priority linter categories. About 60 wikis will have Tidy replaced. Currently about 600 wikis have had Tidy replaced and we have another 300 wikis to go. We plan to finish this transition from Tidy to RemexHtml by end of June 2018. Please follow T175706 to monitor progress of Tidy replacement. [14][15]

Recent changes
- Some pages have templates that describe problems with that article. There is now more information for mobile readers and what is wrong with the article and how they could help fix it. [16]
- You can now thank users for many more actions than edits to a page. This was one of the top ten requests in the Wishlist Survey last year. [17]
- The sort order of categories will have errors for a short time starting Monday 9 April (UTC). We are upgrading versions of an internationalisation library (ICU) and using a script to update the database. This will take between a few hours and a few days depending on wiki size. You can read more details. [18]
- Tag filter titles will now work better on wikis where the tag filter title is in a language that is written in another direction than the language of that wiki. This could for example be an English title (written from left to right) on a Hebrew or an Arabic wiki (written from right to left). [19]
Problems
- The bookmark icon for saved filters on the recent changes page disappeared because of new icon changes. This has now been fixed. [20]
- For a week in March rollbacks got both the
rollback
and theundo
tag on the recent changes page and other pages where you see tags. This has now been fixed. [21]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 April. It will be on all wikis from 12 April (calendar).
- Patrolled edits now have three states instead of two. Recent changes filters are updated to show unpatrolled, autopatrolled and manually patrolled edits. [22]

- Profiling statistics for an abuse filter tell how often edits match the filter. The statistics for the abuse filters were reset after 10000 actions. Wikis can now decide to reset it more or less often. They can file a phabricator task to do so. [23]
- Abuse filters will now treat integers and floats more precisely. For example, 5/2 was rounded down to 2 but will now be 2.5 and 2*4 will be the integer 8 and not the floating-point number 8.0. Division values are the only ones changed. For the rest only strict comparisons (
===
and!==
) will be affected leaving the values unchanged. [24][25] - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 17 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 18 April. It will be on all wikis from 19 April (calendar).

Rollback
Hi, you recently reverted me here, but my blanking of the section was not vandalism. The paragraph in question is entirely incomprehensible and its statistics are not relevant in the scope of the article. There's nothing to be salvaged from it for inclusion in the article, as far as I can see. For this reason, I have reverted back to my version that omits said paragraph. Thanks. --184.167.233.229 (talk) 22:54, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- The IP is correct. Please take more care with your use of rollback. Bishonen | talk 23:01, 20 April 2018 (UTC).
- For future reference, the user has rescinded their warning and sincerely apologized for the mistake. Thank you Bishonen for coming to my defense, as well. It's a hard life out here for us IPs. --184.167.233.229 (talk) 23:10, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) I sincerely apologize for the mixup with my revert, struck out the erroneous warning, and left an apology note on the respective IP's talk page. Guess I get to have some trout for dinner tonight. OhKayeSierra (talk) 23:11, 20 April 2018 (UTC)

Rollback granted
Hi OhKayeSierra. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 17:28, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- Please exercise a little more care when rolling back edits as here . The IP was trying to enter a valid article name into a category. The method was wrong but the intention was good and it just needed a little fixing up of the article and not a warning on the talk page. Please try not to bite the newbies. Thanks. Oh, and you might want to strike out your warning just to set things right. Thanks Velella Velella Talk 22:58, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Velella: I sincerely apologize for my mistaken revert, and thank you for tidying up the cat. I took your suggestion and struck out the mistaken warning, and left an apology of my own on the IP's talk page. OhKayeSierra (talk) 23:11, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
- Excellent. We all make mistakes like this at some time. Great that it is all fixed up. Regards Velella Velella Talk 08:16, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

Indian Summer (Mad Men)
Hi. Especially with a new editor, it's important to get them to take articles through the correct process. Putting out a virtually uncited article isn't a very good way to learn how to write an article. All for encouragement, but if the new editor stops at this point, and simply walks away, it leaves an incredibly poor article out there. I'm pretty sure that's why we have drafts. Anyway, that's just my .02 Onel5969 TT me 00:26, 22 April 2018 (UTC)
- Hey (pinging @Onel5969: so they can see this as well), I've also been dealing with this recent influx of Mad Men created episode articles. As far as I can, they're for a school project, per here. Does anyone know if there's guidelines for this: creating articles specifically for school/work/etc.? The majority of the articles are in poor shape–formatting/layout errors, no Wikipedia links/or various disambiguous links, using inappropriate references such as blogs/fansites, possible original research, and are generally poorly written or read like an essay. Of course, I'll all for helping out, but aren't these for a school project, wouldn't we/I be doing the work for them? I generally have been moving the articles to the draft space, which seems appropriate. Should we reach out to them, and figure out exactly what their intention is or what? The users involved include Lorikuns, Englishpw, Amiajmeri98, and UBEng210. Thanks. Drovethrughosts (talk) 18:42, 26 April 2018

Recent changes
- The parameter for unpatrolled edits in recent changes filters changed name. You might need to update saved filters and links. [31]
Problems
- We are migrating wikis from Tidy to Remex. Because of a bug the 250 wikis which do not yet use Remex were switched on 23 April. This is two months early. This meant that pages with broken wikitext showed wrongly to readers. The bug was undone the next day. You can help fix broken wikitext to avoid this problem when your wiki switches. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. You can follow the process on Phabricator. [32]
Changes later this week
- You will be able use CodeMirror in the 2017 wikitext editor on all wikis. CodeMirror helps with syntax highlighting. It has previously been a beta feature and only available on wikis with scripts that are written from left to right. [33]
- When an administrator blocks someone they will have a calendar they can use to choose when the block ends. This is to make it easier to pick a specific date. [34]
- You can soon turn on the Performance Inspector in the Editing section in your preferences. It shows information about the performance of pages. This could be the size of modules in the page, how many CSS selectors are defined on the page and how many are used, or the size of the images on the page. This tool is intended to help editors fix pages that load slowly. [35]
- There is a new abuse filter function called
equals_to_any
. You can use it to check if its first argument is equal (===
) to any of the following ones. For example you can use it to check if the page's namespace is amongst a given set of values in a more compact way than you could earlier. You can read more on mediawiki.org. - The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 May. It will be on all wikis from 3 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 1 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes
- The Wikimedia Cloud Services team is working on a new project called Toolhub. The goal is to make it easier for Wikimedians to discover software tools they can use. You can leave feedback on the talk page or email jhare wikimedia.org to leave private feedback.
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in all namespaces will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 2 May. Other wikis will be recommended to switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Wikibooks wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch on 9 May. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [36][37][38]

Mini-bank
Hi, I'm surprised that you've decided to remove my contribution of the word "Mini-bank" from the ATM article. This is the most popular colloquial term for an ATM throughout the North of England used particularly by the working class. Some of your names (Tyme machine for example) are completely unknown to me and are not descriptive of an ATM's function; "Mini-bank", on the other hand, Is very descriptive. To strengthen my point, I have "Googled" the term mini-bank, and at the top of the list Is that very same ATM Wikipedia page! I respectfully ask you, therefore, to reconsider, as your reasoning seems rather strange (no disrespect towards your excellent article). My name Is Stephen Hoyland, I am 54 years of age, I have a first In Science History(Hull.1986)and a Masters In Political Science(OU.2001). If you'd like to discuss this matter further please feel free to e-mail me (steve.hoyland1963@gmail.com). Its just Grammatical editing
I didn't "vandalized" the page...I merely edited some grammatical mistakes, thats all. I have helped in editing the grammar many times before too on the same page. I don't mean to be rude but please review carefully before issuing vandalisation warnings. Yes, I have made mistakes in the past edits but I have learned from them too. I hope to keep helping in making Wikipedia better in the future.

So how do I fix it?
I appreciate your comment, but telling me that my addition is not consistent with the objectives as an encyclopedia without telling me how it is not consistent is not really helpful. It leaves me to only guess at how to change it to be consistent. As a math and science teacher I can assure you that the oh ah oh-ah ah-oh ha ho mnemonic is a time tested one that many thousands have used since the 1960s. Instead of -- that's not good, delete -- isn't the idea of wiki that people edit things to improve them? So how do I fix it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bob.A51 (talk • contribs) 06:49, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Bob.A51: Thanks for reaching out to me, and I apologize for not elaborating further than what the template I left on your talk page said. If you feel that the mnemonic you originally added warrants inclusion in the article, please feel free to readd it, and I assure you that I won't revert it again. If there's a reliable source that can be added to it (perhaps about how effective the mnemonic is?), that would actually strengthen the article as well. I'll admit that, as an English teacher myself, Mnemonics in trigonometry beyond SOH-CAH-TOA is pretty much foreign territory to me. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me! OhKayeSierra (talk) 21:07, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the explaination. I think I will add it again at some point, but likely redo the wording and delete the comment about how to get a class to learn it; since when I was searching what I might have done wrong I found that Wiki is not a how to manual. Unfortunately, I do not know a reference -- most mnemonics are passed down word of mouth, or chalk to brain -- but if I ever find one not self published I will add it. There is a place where 100s of people list the most memorable mnemonics they learned on all different kinds of topics; but that was deleted by another editor as not a reliable source, being "a wiki". Collective wisdom of humanity like this, similar to oral historys and stories passed down, can be tough to reference. Like all mythology someone has to be the first to write it down! Thanks. Reply to greeting
Hi, OhKayeSierra. Thanks for the new user greeting, but as it happens I've been editing regularly on Wikipedia for something like 15 years, mostly on the Reference and Help Desks but occasionally in Articles or their talk pages.
You may wonder why, therefore, you spotted an apparently new IP edit from me. The answers are that:
- firstly, I'm reluctant to join, sign up or open accounts in general, wheter online or in real life;
- secondly, if I were to open a Wikipedia Account, I'd feel self-pressured to spend lots more time reading up policies and so forth, and perform more active editing than I do – or should, given other real life priorities!;
- thirdly, I've no interest in building a reputation and feel that any edit should stand or fall on its own merits.
Consequently, I'm content to remain an IP editor.
I've edited from my home PC and various workplace and other machines over the years. Originally I was with a home ISP that provided a fixed IP, which was taken over by another such, which itself was taken over a few years ago by one that only provides a dynamic IP. As a compromise, to provide continuety in discussions during which my actual IP might change, I always end my posts with a "pseudo-signature" of my last fixed home IP, thus: {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.217.209.143 (talk) 23:59, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
Hello!
Hi,
I just created a page - Neel Bhattacharya. It is in the Draft Mode now. How long can it take for anyone to review it and get it publish on the Web?
Thanks, Shayoni — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shayoni15 (talk • contribs) 02:58, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Shayoni15: Thanks for reaching out to me. It looks like Neel Bhattacharya is already in the mainspace. As far as reviewing goes, that would depend on how soon the specific WikiProject for the article subject can get to reviewing it, but you can get a pretty good idea of what it might be graded as at this page. If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me again! OhKayeSierra (talk) 03:23, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The Wikimedia Commons mobile app has a new version. It is now easier to find nearby places that need pictures. It helps you with direct uploads and title and category suggestions. The app only works on Android phones. [39]
Problems
- The abuse filters had a problem with blocks where you had changed how long they last. It used the default length everywhere. This was in late April. Abuse filter users should make sure the right block length is used and change them if needed. This is only for filters where how long blocks last had been changed. [40]
Changes later this week
- The advanced search function beta feature will be on all Wikimedia wikis. It makes it easier to use some of the special search functions that most editors don't know exist. [41]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 May. It will be on all wikis from 10 May (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 8 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 9 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- All wikis with fewer than 100 high-priority linter errors in the main namespace will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 16 May. Other wikis will switch soon when they have fixed the errors that must be fixed. Tidy will be removed on all wikis before July 2018. [42][43]

How to create a family tree?
, how can start a family tree? I have looked at some family trees' edit source section. It looks like this:==Family tree== {{chart top|width=100%|collapsed=no. Please teach me! Linear D (talk) 02:30, 17 May 2018 (UTC) Linear D (talk) 02:54, 17 May 2018 (UTC)Linear D
- @Linear D: Wow! Thank you for the kind words! I’m somewhat unfamiliar with family trees, but I’ll try to help you out as much as I can. It looks like {{Ahnentafel}} might be your best option in terms of how to create a family tree on Wikipedia. The link I gave is going to have more information on how to use it. Help:Family trees is also an excellent resource in other ways to create family trees. If you have any more questions for me, please feel free to ask away! Happy editing! OhKayeSierra (talk) 03:03, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
Thank you so much OhKayeSierra. It's good to be kind, you know. Linear D (talk) 03:57, 17 May 2018 (UTC)Linear D
Thank you for the suggestions. It's so hard!😭 I have another question, why do I have to became a administrator to upload pictures? Linear D (talk) 02:39, 18 May 2018 (UTC)Linear D
I told you that I told the Tech news to the User: Soni yesterday. But I found that it was disappearing. Then I looked at the page's history. You said:"If Soni wants to know about tech news, they are more than welcome to sign up for it". But you told me to sent that to other users? Why is that?(I just want to ask, not to be mean or rude) Linear D (talk) 02:48, 18 May 2018 (UTC)Linear D
- @Linear D: Sorry it took a bit to reply back! I could have sworn I typed one up too. At any rate, you should be able to upload images. Perhaps you weren't fully autoconfirmed at the time you wrote your message to me? According to your user rights, you shouldn't have any trouble uploading images now. In regards to me reverting your edit on User:Soni, that was because the newsletter that you copied is a newsletter that is automatically delivered to users interested in signing up for it. Also, editing other user pages without permission is generally considered to be a major faux pas in the Wikipedia community, as most users have a specific layout to their userpage that they want to keep a specific way. OhKayeSierra (talk) 22:19, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Linear D:, More relevant, you edited User:Soni, which is my Userpage. That's where I keep information about who I am and what I am doing on Wikipedia. User talk:Soni is where other users interact with me and leave messages for me, including newsletters if needed. Going on someone's User talk page and leaving a message is alright. (If someone minds, they will tell you). But try not to edit someone's User page (except if they ask you to). Soni (talk) 00:47, 22 May 2018 (UTC)
Not everything The Daily Mail writes is fake
Those two pieces I wrote about Curtis Sironen were real and did actually happen. Not everything The DM writes is fake you know. Anyway, I found better sources that are more reliable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sully198787 (talk • contribs) 10:56, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

Official YouTube Channel for the Canadian Nationalist Party
Hi,
You removed the links to the Canadian Nationalist Party videos. This was in fact, appropriate content for the party as the videos are used to explain what the political context of the party is. Video is the easiest way to get the different topic areas to people as not many take the time to read 3 or 4 pages of text anymore.
Please allow them to be added back with a tag that they have been approved and are actual Canadian Nationalist Party content prepared by, created for, and owned by, The Canadian Nationalist Party.
Namaste, Rhonda — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bikes and Sails (talk • contribs) 05:45, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Bikes and Sails: When I reverted your edit, there were two issues that I found with the edit that prompted me to revert it: One issue is that Wikipedia is not a web directory or collection of external links. The other is that, after looking for a precedent from other political party pages on Wikipedia, none of them have links to YouTube, which leads me to question its inclusion in the encyclopedia as a credible external link, especially since the information in the channel isn't substantially different than the official website's content. OhKayeSierra (talk) 06:01, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
Unsourced Articles
I am a new unsigned rapper and wanted to know how many press releases I need before I create my article.
Do I have to hire a publicist? Al Ayquna (talk) 08:53, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Al Ayquna: WP:MUSICBIO has a numbered list of what Wikipedia tends to look for, in terms of notability for musicians. I would also strongly caution you against creating an article for yourself or hiring someone to do it for you. That could be construed as a conflict of interest and Wikipedia isn't meant for self-promotion, anyway. A good rule of thumb is that, for true notability and inclusion in the encyclopedia (especially for biographies of living people), if the subject warrants creating an article, someone will have created it or will create one for you. Recent changes
- You can now use global preferences on most wikis. This means you can set preferences for all wikis at the same time. Before this you had to change them on each individual wiki. Global preferences will come to the Wikipedias later this week. [46][47]
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked. [48]
- Wikidata now supports lexicographical data. This helps describe words.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups. [49]
- Some rare invisible Unicode characters have recently been banned from page titles. This includes soft hyphens (U+00AD) and left-to-right (U+2066) and right-to-left (U+2067) isolate markers. Existing pages with these characters will soon be moved by a script. [50]
- There's a new Wikimedia Foundation team to support the Wikimedia technical communities. It's called the Technical Engagement team. Most of the team members did similar work in other teams before this. [51]
Problems
- Some translatable pages are showing old translations instead of latest ones. The cause of this issue has been fixed. We will update all pages automatically to show the latest translations. [52]
Changes later this week
- There will be a new special page named PasswordPolicies. This page gives information about the password rules for each user group on that wiki. [53]
- A new way to see moved paragraphs in diffs is coming to most wikis. This is to make it easier to find the moved paragraphs and the changes in them. [54]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 29 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 30 May. It will be on all wikis from 31 May (calendar).
- Wikis can enable Citoid to provide automatic reference look-up in the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. This is complex. The tool will now disable itself if the configuration isn't correct. It has warned about this in the JavaScript console since February. Check that your wiki is configured correctly. You can ask for help if you need it. [55]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 29 May at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 30 May at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Content Translation drafts which have not been updated in over a year will be removed. This allows other users to translate those articles. [56]
- A survey is collecting information on what users think about how Wikimedia wiki pages are loaded. This information could be used in future development. [57]
- Some wikis will switch to use the Remex parsing library. This is to replace Tidy. It will happen on 30 May and 13 June. Wikis with fewer than 100 linter issues in the main namespace in all high-priority linter categories will switch. This includes Wikidata. Tidy will probably be removed on all wikis in the first week of July. [58][59]

Administrators' newsletter – June 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2018).

- Al Ameer son • AliveFreeHappy • Cenarium • Lupo • MichaelBillington
- Following a successful request for comment, administrators are now able to add and remove editors to the "event coordinator" group. Users in the event coordinator group have the ability to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit. Users will no longer need to be in the "account creator" group if they are in the event coordinator group.
- Following an AN discussion, all pages with content related to blockchain and cryptocurrencies, broadly construed, are now under indefinite general sanctions.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
- The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
- There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
- It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.
- A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.
- In early May, an unusually high level of failed login attempts was observed. The WMF has stated that this was an "external effort to gain unauthorized access to random accounts". Under Wikipedia policy, administrators are required to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Recent changes
- The MonoBook skin has been optimised for mobile devices. It now looks different. [60]
- Planet Wikimedia collects blogs about Wikimedia. It will now use the Rawdog feed aggregator to do this instead of Planet. [61][62]
- Redirect links in Special:WhatLinksHere now link to the original page and not the target page. This was done earlier and changed the used messages on some pages. This was a problem for wikis that customized the message. A new change fixed this by using the old messages with one more parameter for customization. Wikis that already changed their customized messages will have to move the customization back again. [63]
Problems
- You will not be able to edit some wikis between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 13 June. You can see if your wiki is one of them.
- MassMessage did not work 24–28 May. This is also why last week's Tech News was late. [64]

There is now a browser extension so you can add pages to your reading list from a web browser. At the moment it works with Firefox and Chrome. [67]
- There is a new version of Pywikibot. Pywikibot is a tool to automate tasks on MediaWiki wikis. [68]
Problems
- The MonoBook skin was changed to make it work better for mobile users. This caused some problems. The change was rolled back to fix them. The new version is now back on the wikis. MonoBook users can opt out from the new responsive design. [69]
Changes later this week
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. For most wikis this will happen on 18 June. For the rest it will happen on 25 June. [70][71]

Future changes
- Some old web browsers will not be able to read the Wikimedia wikis. This is because they use an insecure way to connect to them. This means that we get less security for everyone else too. This affects about 0.08% of all traffic to the Wikimedia wikis. This affects for example those who read Wikipedia on a PlayStation 3. [73][74]
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. Because there is no new MediaWiki version this week it will happen on 25 June for most wikis. For the rest it will happen in early July. [75][76]
- All wikis that have not already done so will switch to use the Remex parsing library on 5 July. This is to replace Tidy. You can help fix remaining errors. [77]

- A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.
- Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon ( ) in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
- IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).
- Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Recent changes
- WebM video files have smaller file size but still be of the same quality. Creating WebM files will take longer time. [80]
- The new filters for edit review tools and interface for watchlists will leave beta. This was supposed to already have happened but was delayed. For most wikis this will happen on 9 July. For the rest it will happen on 16 July. [81]
- All wikis now use the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy. This could cause errors. You can help fix the errors. [82]
Problems
- When you rolled back an edit it could get both the
Rollback
andUndo
tags. This has been fixed. [83] - Rollbacks from autopatrolled users were not marked as patrolled. This has been fixed. [84]
Changes later this week
- When you edit a link in the visual editor there will be two separate buttons to change which page the link goes to (target) or its text (label). [85][86]
- On the mobile version you can find a link to an editor's contributions from their user page. Now this will work even if they haven't created a user page. [87]
- When you edit a discussion on the mobile version you sometimes get your signature automatically added. This will now not happen if you have already added a signature manually. This is to avoid double signatures. [88]
- Structured discussions toolbars will have more style options. [89]
- When you look at Wikimedia code in Gerrit there will be a new interface. It is on by default for new users. This is also true for developers. This is to make it easier to understand what is happening. [90]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 July. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 July. It will be on all wikis from 12 July (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 10 July at 18:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 11 July at 15:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Today all administrators can edit CSS and JavaScript for the entire wiki. There will be a new user group for editing CSS and JavaScript. Administrators will no longer automatically be able to do this. This is because it is a security risk when all administrator accounts can edit JavaScript even if they never plan to or do not know how it works. You can read more. [91]
- Page previews will be on by default for new accounts. [92]

Administrators' newsletter – August 2018
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2018).
- After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
- Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.
- The WMF Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input on the second set of wireframes for the Special:Block redesign that will introduce partial blocks. The new functionality will allow you to block a user from editing a specific set of pages, pages in a category, a namespace, and for specific actions such as moving pages and uploading files.
