Speedy deletion nomination of Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya

Hello Obi2canibe,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, University of Kelaniya#Faculty of Medicine.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4

Hello Obi2canibe,

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 812 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.

Burning of Jaffna Library

Two images are getting removed by a bot due to I don't fully understand why reasons, can you help me in figuring out the needs as those pictures are essential in telling the story. The bot left a few messages on my talk page, I reverted the removal as it could lead to deletion of the hard to find images. Thanks Kanatonian (talk) 20:04, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

@Kanatonian: I've added fair use rationales for both images - copyright requirements have changed since you uploaded the images ten years ago. Hopefully that should be enough to prevent deletion.--Obi2canibe (talk) 11:53, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Thank you, cant imagine its been 10 years :) Kanatonian (talk) 18:58, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

List of University of Jaffna people

You have removed 3 reputed alumni of U of Jaffna from the list. Could you give me a reason? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aruppillai (talkcontribs) 08:03, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

@Aruppillai: First of all, my apologies for not providing the reason in the edit summary - I normally do, I don't know what happened in this case.
They were removed because they were, in my opinion, not notable according to Wikipedia policies and guidelines. If you believe that they are notable you should create articles for those three individuals and see if they stand up to scrutiny by the Wikipedia community.--Obi2canibe (talk) 12:53, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 18,511 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.
  • Some editors are committing to work specifically on patrolling new pages on 15 July. If you have not reviewed new pages in a while, this might be a good time to be involved. Please remember that quality of patrolling is more important than quantity, that the speedy deletion criteria should be followed strictly, and that ovetagging for minor issues should be avoided.

Technology update:

  • Several requests have been put into Phabractor to increase usability of the New Pages Feed and the Page Curation toolbar. For more details or to suggest improvements go to Wikipedia:Page Curation/Suggested improvements
  • The tutorial has been updated to include links to the following useful userscripts. If you were not aware of them, they could be useful in your efforts reviewing new pages:

my (obsolete by you) edit

i did my edit on royal college because that content promoted the school, overshadowing the other sri lankan schools.so never remove my edits without talking to me.I am disgraced.

@Daham jayarathna: If you wish to continue to edit Wikipedia you need to follow its rules. You removed content without providing an edit summary which goes against good practice.
The content you removed may look promotional but was supported by reliable sources. You need to discuss this on the article's talk page prior to removing it.--Obi2canibe (talk) 11:16, 16 July 2017 (UTC)

realiable sources !!!! raliable source your head

Listen here buddy,I don't care whether you're an award winning wikipedian and trash bag but realize this:in reality you're nothing,6 feet of nothing,500 kg of nothing,

Ministries of Sri Lanka

Hi again Obi.

I've been going over the List of ministries of Sri Lanka over the past week or so, and I've been updating pages and moving obsolete ministries to the "former ministries" section.

One of the things I tried to do was to shift the currency sign to LKR from the existing Rs., since pages were using a mix of the two. I'd also made some other changes, one of them being to shift the various "Colombo X" to link to the page of whatever page that covered that area (e.g.- Colombo 10 linking to Maradana etc.). I also belatedly realized that the Jurisdiction field should contain the name of the government, not the name of the entity over which the agency has jurisdiction.

You had recently undone these (and other) edits and others on the ministry of health page. While I have no objection to you rolling back these edits, I'd appreciate it if you could:

a) extend these edits to the rest of the pages on the List of Ministries of Sri Lanka page, and

b) agree to a compromise to start using LKR in place of Rs. I admit the preference is personal, but I do think using the ISO symbol is...classier, if that makes sense.

What's going to happen otherwise is that these pages are going to just sit there with no standardisation, one page using this currency format, another using a different one, one phrasing addresses or other statements in one way, the others in a different way etc. That list hadn't been updated in a couple years by the point I took a look, and it showed.

I'm currently on the Women and Children's Affairs article, and I'll keep going down that list sticking to what you've done on the Health page with the exception of the currency symbol, which I hope you'll agree to.

As I said on the WP:SL page, we really should have a page for rules on making ministry articles and stuff. Get everyone on the same page. - ක - (talk) 03:56, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

P.S.- I would also ask we not use the "(Ministry name) secretary" (e.g- defence secretary) title, since (while people may use it colloquially) these guys are not politicians and don't have the same kind of authority implied by that title in places like the US, for instance. Ministry secretary, secretary or permanent secretary might be a better fit.

We really should draw up a set of rules.- ක - (talk) 04:03, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

P.P.S.- ok, there's way too many changes to that Health article for me to replicate in other articles. Since I can't figure out if this stuff is rules or personal preference, I think it's better if I stop editing these pages altogether. I hope you can edit the rest of the pages on that list too. - ක - (talk) 04:11, 12 September 2017 (UTC)

@Jesuschristonacamel: a) I intend to update other ministry articles so that they all are in the same format as the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine but this may take some time as there are so many articles. You are welcome to have a go at bringing all the info boxes in line.
b) Whilst ISO symbols are classier they are not widely used in the real world and that's why most articles use the local symbol e.g Department of Health (United Kingdom) uses £, not GBP; United States Department of Justice uses $, not USD.
c) Agreed, will change back to [Ministry name] secretary.
I'm sorry if I've put you off editing these ministry articles. You made many good edits and I hope you will continue. It took me a very long time to add all the ministers to these articles. Your assistance in expanding, updating and standardising the articles would be very appreciated.--Obi2canibe (talk) 11:26, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
"Whilst ISO symbols are classier they are not widely used in the real world and that's why most articles use the local symbol e.g Department of Health (United Kingdom) uses £, not GBP; United States Department of Justice uses $, not USD."
True, but unlike the lankan rupee, they have a unique symbol for their currency. We share ours with several others that use different versions of the rupee. Unless there's a hard and fast rule, I don't see any particular need to stick to that convention.- ක - (talk) 17:03, 27 September 2017 (UTC)
That's not correct, the $ symbol is used by several currencies e.g. Canadian Dollar, Australian Dollar. Someone seeing the Rs. symbol on a Sri Lankan article is not going to think it refers to the Pakistani rupee. There's no rule, it's really up to individual editor preference. However, it would be good to get consensus so that we have consistency.--Obi2canibe (talk) 14:15, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
