Tech News
- The next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 19 July.
Recent changes
- AutoWikiBrowser is a tool to make repetitive tasks easier. It now uses JSON.
Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage
has moved toWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPageJSON
andWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Config
.Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/Version
has moved toWikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/CheckPage/VersionJSON
. The tool will eventually be configured on the wiki so that you don't have to wait until the new version to add templates or regular expression fixes. [1]
Problems
- InternetArchiveBot helps saving online sources on some wikis. It adds them to Wayback Machine and links to them there. This is so they don't disappear if the page that was linked to is removed. It currently has a problem with linking to the wrong date when it moves pages from
archive.is
toweb.archive.org
. [2]
Changes later this week
- The tool to find, add and remove templates will be updated. This is to make it easier to find and use the right templates. It will come to the first wikis on 7 July. It will come to more wikis later this year. [3][4]
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- Some Wikimedia wikis use Flagged Revisions or pending changes. It hides edits from new and unregistered accounts for readers until they have been patrolled. The auto review action in Flagged Revisions will no longer be logged. All old logs of auto-review will be removed. This is because it creates a lot of logs that are not very useful. [5]

Help out with edit to the Quad (company) article
editHi there. This is a gentle reminder to see if you wouldn't mind having a look at my most recent edit request on the Quad (company) Talk page. This is a straightforward addition to the company's history section, and quite helpful for readers wanting to learn more about the basic background of Quad. I hope you can find the time to help with this, as you've been so helpful in the past. Thanks very much, Tina at Quad (talk) 18:51, 8 July 2021 (UTC)

American politics discretionary sanctions notice
editThis is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in post-1992 politics of the United States and closely related people. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.
For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.

editI explained my reasons perfectly clearly on the talk page for the article don't just revert changes for 'look at all my edits' brownie points. this isn't the first time you've done this looking at the history of this talk page.

- If your wiki uses markup like
<div class="mw-content-ltr">
or<div class="mw-content-rtl">
without the requireddir
attribute, then these will no longer work in 2 weeks. There is a short-term fix that can be added to your local wiki's Common.css page, which is explained at T287701. From now on, all usages should include the full attributes, for example:<div class="mw-content-ltr" dir="ltr" lang="en">
or<div class="mw-content-rtl" dir="rtl" lang="he">
. This also applies to some other HTML tags, such asspan
orcode
. You can find existing examples on your wiki that need to be updated, using the instructions at T287701. - Reminder: Wikimedia has migrated to the Libera Chat IRC network, from the old Freenode network. Local documentation should be updated.
Problems
- Last week, all wikis had slow access or no access for 30 minutes. There was a problem with generating dynamic lists of articles on the Russian Wikinews, due to the bulk import of 200,000+ new articles over 3 days, which led to database problems. The problematic feature has been disabled on that wiki and developers are discussing if it can be fixed properly. [9][10]
Changes later this week
- When adding links to a page using VisualEditor or the 2017 wikitext editor, disambiguation pages will now only appear at the bottom of search results. This is because users do not often want to link to disambiguation pages. [11]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 August. It will be on all wikis from 5 August (calendar).
Future changes
- The team of the Wikipedia app for Android is working on communication in the app. The developers are working on how to talk to other editors and get notifications. You can read more. They are looking for users who want to test the plans. Any editor who has an Android phone and is willing to download the app can do this.
- The Beta Feature for Discussion tools will be updated in the coming weeks. You will be able to subscribe to individual sections on a talk page at more wikis. You can test this now by adding
?dtenable=1
to the end of the talk page's URL (example).

DYK for Mallard II
editOn 5 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Mallard II, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the wooden-hulled Mallard II (pictured), built in 1936, is "probably the oldest operating dredge in California"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Mallard II. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Mallard II), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
Clarification on source for Mad Max (video game edit)
editI am one of the people who preordered the game and was never notified that it was canceled, along with a few of my friends. After the estimated delivery date came and went with no updates, I decided to do some searching online. Chatting with others on a number of web forums, I discovered quite a few others were still patiently waiting for the game to arrive, as well. After doing some further searching, we discovered the game had been cancelled. We were all forced to go through the Amazon.com order cancellation/refund process. This is why I didn't list citation on my edit that mentioned the incident. It was personal experience. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.92.181.198 (talk • contribs)

Shoop
editHi JPxG, I re-reverted you edit to Shoop because I cannot find a Wikipedia article that mentions this use of the word. Disambiguation pages are supposed to guide readers to existing information in Wikipedia, and any reader who clicks on Adobe Photoshop or image editing looking for 'shoop' is going to be disappointed. Could the term be added to either article? Leschnei (talk) 13:39, 18 July 2021 (UTC)
- @Leschnei: I've provided a reference for that entry, but if there's a problem still I would be happy to put a brief mention in the page on Photoshop, on image editing in general, or a Wiktionary link. jp×g 22:55, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- That would be better, since references are always supposed to go in articles rather than DAB pages. Leschnei (talk) 23:52, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
Reason for deletion
editHi,
I did explain my deletion...the page already covered much of what was in that subsection already. You have to actually read the other sections. With the addition of that subsection, there is now quite a bit of redundant information, which degrades the article. 174.193.195.63 (talk) 09:30, 19 July 2021 (UTC) Looks like my IP reset...I am referring to 2021 California gubernatorial recall election 174.193.195.63 (talk) 09:31, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
The subsection in question:
In 2017, ahead of the recall of State Senator Josh Newman, the law concerning recall elections was changed to give voters 30 business days to withdraw their names from the recall petition (43 voters out of the more than 1.7 million valid signatures took advantage of this opportunity in this recall election).[14] The 2017 law change also added a 30 day period for the state Department of Finance to conduct a cost estimate, and the Joint Legislative Budget Committee has 30 days to review that estimate.[15] On June 28 2021 Newsom signed SB 152 into law to allow the California Secretary of State to certify the recall, and then for the Lieutenant Governor to set a date for the recall without waiting for the Joint Legislative Budget Committee to review the cost estimate "so long as the Legislature has appropriated the funds it determines 'reasonably necessary' to conduct the recall election."[16] With the same law change, the legislature appropriated $250 million to administer the recall election.[17] However, on July 1 the Department of Finance estimated the cost of the election at $276 million.[18]
What already is in the article:
The recall campaign submitted 2,117,730 signatures by the March 2021 deadline.[48] On April 26, 2021, the office of Secretary of State Shirley Weber announced that the recall effort had gained enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, pending official certification after a period of 30 days where voters could retract their signatures[Note 1] and where state officials tallied the costs to conduct the election (up to 60 days).[50] The final count yielded 1,719,943 valid signatures, which was roughly 13.8 percent of votes cast in 2018, exceeding the 12 percent threshold required to trigger the recall election.[51] On June 23, 2021, the secretary of state announced that only 43 recall signatories withdrew their signatures statewide prior to the withdrawal deadline, ensuring that the election to recall Gavin Newsom from the governor's office would proceed.[52]
Note 1: Due to legislation introduced by state Democratic lawmakers trying unsuccessfully to prevent the 2017 recall of Democratic State Senator Josh Newman[49]
After official certification, Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis was legally required to call the election within 60 to 80 days.[53] The official certification occurred on July 1,[54] and on the same day, Kounalakis called the election for September 14, 2021.[55]
On June 10, 2021, lawmakers in the supermajority-Democratic state Legislature announced the inclusion of $215 million in election funding in the regular state budget to waive the required review of election costs, which would have allowed the recall election to be held by August 2021, earlier than November 2021, which was expected. An early election could help Newsom avoid potential political fallout over fires, virus variants, or school reopenings, and increase the odds of him defeating the recall.[81][82] California's county election clerks urged Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis to schedule the election after mid-September, citing an inability to guarantee a successful election, possible voter confusion, and the potential for costs far beyond the $215 million that Democratic legislators had provided in their budget proposal. The $215 million estimate was originally produced by county election officials, who had assumed there would be a traditional recall calendar, which ran counter to Democratic legislators' goals to change the laws to speed up the electoral process to help Newsom defeat the recall.[83][84] Jack Citrin, a political science professor at UC Berkeley, said changing the calendar threatened to reinforce the public’s cynicism about politicians using any means available to stay in power, and that they were "trying to create a situation that is most favorable for the partisan outcome that they favor".[85] The date for the recall election was chosen to be September 14, 2021 after the proposed rule changes were signed into law by governor Newsom. The changes were heavily criticized by Newsom's Republican opponents.[86]

"If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page"
editYou did. Surprisingly. My description stated that the corrections were of grammar and semantics, i.e. the previous version contained incorrect and confusing usage of English grammar and meaning. However, if the state of Wikipedia 'editorship' is such that poor English usage (i) is not recognised and (ii) is confused with meaning then I can't waste my time correcting what should be secondary school mistakes. At least they would be in most countries outside the US of A. I'm not surprised as there are so many examples of poor education and use of language in the US of A. In education terms the US of A really is a 'third world country'.
- Since you have not signed your comment, and you have not said what page this is in reference to, I have no idea what you are talking about. With regard to grammar mistakes, I would recommend you write "in educational terms" instead of "in education terms". jp×g 23:02, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
Mallard II
editI'm about to take a look at the Mallard II article, and I was wondering if you have any way of finding out certain mechanical details (e.g. hull dimensions and propulsion) and where the ship was built, and by whom it was built.
Regards: GreatLakesShips (talk) 17:44, 24 July 2021 (UTC)
- @GreatLakesShips: This was actually one of the things I'd been meaning to ask you about -- what are good resources for finding this information about ships? I couldn't glean anything about that in the sources I found. Are there databases or gazetteers that have things like that? If it helps, I have access to local libraries (and could probably go look at the thing in real life to locate identification numbers). jp×g 23:04, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- The only global database I know about is the Miramar Ship Index, which I don't have access to. GreatLakesShips (talk) 00:23, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Accademia
editYou recently reverted an edit of mine. Unfortunately, you don't seem to speak Italian, and I do. "Academy" is spelled with one C in English, but "Accademia" with 2 C's is the Italian word, as you should have checked before talking of experiments and sandboxes. The Accademia Peloritana is well-known (and under that spelling). I used to be a very active Wickedpedia editor under my own name, but the combination of ignorance and snarkiness, hostility, or worse, had me quit about ten years ago, and I now very rarely fix some minor thing, usually a typo. Even proper spelling one has to fight for around here. Ick. 24.136.11.43 (talk) 12:41, 25 July 2021 (UTC)
- @24.136.11.43: It would seem that I fucked up here, so I offer you my apologies. jp×g 23:05, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
editing tourism security section
editwe are needing your help in reversing the dishonest intervention of Mr. Ollie. We have edited the section Tourism security with changes important for Emerald Group, which were reversed because we would make so-called ads of the editorial organization. We are far from doing this. the text we want to insert is this.. the reason is simple tourism security lacks of a journal and series, and this is the first in its nature.
Although the specialized literature in tourism security abounds, there is a scarcity of book series and journals in the theme[1]. In 2019, Emerald Group Publishing creates the first book series dedicated to tourism security and safety. The series, which entitles Tourism Security Safety And Post Conflict Destinations, is directed by Niall Kennedy. The series publishes books associated with risk perception theory[2], terrorism, tourism security[3], aviation security, pandemics, dark tourism and post-disaster tourism[4].
- Apologies: I would look into this in more depth, but your post wasn't signed, and I am having trouble finding this section's addition in the page history, (which means I'm unable to find the article and edits this is in reference to). jp×g 23:09, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
