Lord Chief Justice of Ireland
I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the issue which I have raised at Talk:Lord Chief Justice of Ireland about pre-1377 holders of the office. Alekksandr (talk) 12:55, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
I think the two offices may well have been the same before 1377. Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 12:59, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
- I am not sure that I agree. If you compare: -
- 1. The list at PP 37-8 of Volume 1 of Elrington Ball's 'The Judges in Ireland', which starts in 1324 (see P 25) and
- 2. Those shown as 'J' in the list at PP 469 ff of Volume IX of Moody, Martin and Byrne's 'A New History of Ireland',
- the two seem to be different, with occasional exceptions such as Thomas Mortimer. As stated in that talk page, I propose to replace the current pre-1377 list with the list shown on that talk page. The current pre-1377 list seems to be an improvement on List of Lords Lieutenant of Ireland, and could be 'transplanted' onto that page. Alekksandr (talk) 14:19, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
I wonder if part of the problem was loose terminology? For example the Serjeant at law and the Attorney General were quite separate offices, but it is sometimes difficult to be sure who held which. Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 14:27, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
- It's always possible. However, as always with Wikipedia, I feel that we should go with what is in the sources. Elrington Ball is the most recent list of Lords Chief Justice of Ireland that I am aware of. NB that the article until 14 May 2012 - https://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Lord_Chief_Justice_of_Ireland&direction=next&oldid=492246103 - followed the list at P 452 of Haydyn's Book of Dignities (1851). The 'New History of Ireland' list does not mention the office of Lord Chief Justice. I therefore feel that the article should follow Elrington Ball. Alekksandr (talk) 15:29, 23 August 2015 (UTC)
Oh Elrington Ball is the absolute Bible here - and should always be trusted in case of difficulty. Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 18:45, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi
Hi Chrisdoyleorwell,
Thanks for your great work on Sunderland's page! It is a lot better. Le Sanglier des Ardennes (talk) 01:50, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you too Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 10:48, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- Chrisdoyleorwell, what are you trying to do with Sunderland? Wherefore point out that he was not a rake? I never saw anyone claim he was. 'Tseems to me that you're pulling the tone down a little. Le Sanglier des Ardennes (talk) 02:05, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- Apologies- Kenyon in his biography does draw the contrast between his gambling and his otherwise blameless life- but Im happy to remove any such reference.
Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 11:08, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
- I'm sorry it only seemed to me that under your hands the page was becoming too much of a panegyric. I could add that
Despite this he was never accused of being either a gangster or a rake, all admitted him to be a faithful husband and no more than a moderate drinker.
I can’t see why we should list things that Sunderland was not; and besides, it was already mentioned that he was no lecher. No offense intended, but I might report you as having a conflict of interest here – you're partiality is such that I come to suspect you’re his ghost editing his page! Le Sanglier des Ardennes (talk) 21:56, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- No offence taken. But he was perhaps the most hated Englishman of his time and it is very difficult to get the balance right.
Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 22:00, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- Utterly agree. I can't help but admire him, despite his foibles, and pity him. But lets keep the page as sober and decent as you say he was. Le Sanglier des Ardennes (talk) 22:03, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- Agreed
Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 22:05, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Chrisdoyleorwell I've been doing some more alterations to Sunderland's page; do you want have a look sometime and tell me what you think? I hope it meets with your approval. Le Sanglier des Ardennes (talk) 23:21, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. William Aston
Hi, I'm impressed with your page on William Aston. However, most of the things that I know about William Aston are not really mentioned here, e.g. Recorder of Louth, landowner also in County Armagh, soldier in Col. Hungerford's regiment. From your knowledge of him, are you content that this is the same person, as I would intend to supplement the page with this sort of information. Thanks. Aldernodules (talk) 20:10, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Certainly add everything you can! I relied on Elrington Ball, who wrote pretty much the Bible ob Irish judges but was not omniscinet! Chrisdoyleorwell (talk) 20:57, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
