MountVic127, welcome to the "teahouse", where people ask questions about using Wikipedia. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:14, 18 May 2023 (UTC) Your advice regarding Great Circle Distance, combined with DecDeg, have allowed me to get two distance which look about right. - Hello MountVic127. You cannot expect numerous bots working on over six million articles to produce instant results. Unless you have bot coding skills and can help streamline their operations, I suggest that you be patient and grateful for the useful work that these bots do. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:47, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
- @MountVic127: It is very helpful for editors, I agree, but I think that if it were made the default setting it could be confusing for Wikipedia readers who are not editors. That's just my immediate thought, and you could suggest this at the Idea lab (which is part of the Village pump), to get more input. There's quite a few helpful tools and scripts that make editing easier, and it's hard to say which is the most useful one... check out WP:TOOLS!
- As for adding a copy of a post to the end of the Teahouse page (or any talk page) to keep it visible, that's not a good idea for a couple of reasons: the original post is still there, currently near the top of the page and subsequently in the archives, and this post will gradually move up on the page as well – there is no way to keep it at the bottom without copying it repeatedly, and we'd end up with hundreds of copies of the same post in the archives. Secondly, when copying the entire post and thread you also copied the replies and signatures of other editors, which is something you should always avoid doing. And finally, it would not be read by very many editors here. New editors who come to the Teahouse don't usually read other posts, not even the ones immediately above their own post, and a brand-new editor does not necessarily know what a disambiguation page is. --bonadea contributions talk 08:03, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

editRailway stations in Laos
editThis new article is the result of reading the UN Map and other articles descending from "Transport in Laos".
Maybe I should change "See also" to "See also and cite"
The layout of Railway stations in Laos follows the same pattern as used by most of the "Railway stations in Xyz" articles.
A particular feature of these files is that they list the stations in "line order".
Maybe there needs to be a Category: Railway stations by country.
You have reverted this file too soon; you could have recorded your reactions in my User:MountVic127 page. May I revert your revert?

Ranked choice voting in Australia
editRCV is the voting system used in Federal, State and Local elections.
The prime reason for using RCV is because the right of centre party is actually a semi-permanent coalition of two right of centre parties and RCV is needed to avoid suicidal three-cornered-contests. RCV has gradually spread from federal elections to state and local elections. The counting RCV votes is gradually being automated; now the ballots are "scanned" by hand into the computer which then eliminates the lowest rank candidates until only two candidates remain. This is called the "two party preferred" vote even though one of the parties may actually be a coalition.
This system allows large number of candidates, parties and groups to nominate; and measures are necessary to winnow out the number of candidates. For example, a registered party with 1500 members can have their party name and logo printed on the ballot paper which is not possible with fewer than 1000 audited members.
Whether the rankings are optional or compulsary depends on jurisdiction. If a party advertising "just vote [1]" may counter-productively discourage the numbering of all the squares if that is necessary to cast a valid vote. In the scheme of things, numbering some or all of the squares is not rocket science.
Ranked choice voting is used in the upper and lower houses in all federal and state elections in Australia. The following table shows that the upper and lower houses are more similar than seen at first sight.
The elections are gradually being automated. Firstly the ballots are manually scanned into a database, and then the commission activates the computer to eliminates the lowest scored candidates, and so until there are only two candidates.
Comparison of Upper and Lower houses
editHouse | House name | Quota | Quota 1/n | System name | System | Remarks |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Lower | Representatives | 50.1% | 1 / 02 | Preferential | Ranked voting | Number all squares |
Upper | Senate (half dissolution) | 14.3% | 1 / 07 | Proportional | Ranked voting | Above line 1 ... 6 Below line 1 ... 12 |
Upper | Senate (double dissolution) | 07.6% | 1 / 13 | Proportional | Ranked voting | Above line 1 ... 6 Below line 1 ... 12 |
The essential difference between voting in the upper and lower houses is the size of the quota.
