Any reason why WP:BRD should not apply here? Gnevin (talk) 23:29, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'd be hesitant being bold to enforce a guideline; no harm in discussing. Mackensen (talk) 00:52, 13 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
What is the specific reason to keep them? As the guideline states, "Icons should not be added only because they look good, because aesthetics are in the eye of the beholder: one reader's harmless decoration may be another reader's distraction". I am the latter. Zzyzx11 (talk) 10:06, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Keep the icons, because they help make it easier to identify systems in the {{s-line}} tables. DReifGalaxyM31 (talk) 01:46, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't think they serve an essential purpose of identification as the thing they identify is listed alongside in word, but maybe they do have value as a secondary form of identification. I can see this one both ways. I would like to keep them but they are not essential. --DanielRigal (talk) 22:22, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
DReifGalaxyM31, how do they "make it easier to identify systems in the {{s-line}} tables"? Examples like London Waterloo station and London King's Cross railway station are unnecessary and bloody distractions when each table is already identified by both their word name AND their own separate sections. And it is extremely unnecessary on such articles as Waterloo tube station and Mornington Crescent tube station when there is only one system for those stations. If you want the icons, they should be effective and efficient on all the articles that use this template, not just the pages that you primarily work on. Zzyzx11 (talk) 04:29, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
Rather than have this turn into a flame war, let me explain myself: I restored the icons because I thought that the idea didn't have enough consensus and there wasn't enough discussion and thought about the idea. I support DanielRigal's remark that "maybe they do have value as a secondary form of identification. I can see this one both ways. I would like to keep them but they are not essential."DReifGalaxyM31 (talk) 16:11, 15 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
This effectively means, "restore the icons and keep them until the subject has been further discussed at length." DReifGalaxyM31 (talk) 19:40, 16 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

System names for Manila are LRTA and MRTC officially and not Manila LRT and MRT

edit

Hi i would like to call the attention of all regarding the proper system labels for Manila as the System names used are the colloquial ones. Based on maps on stations and some trains (Particularly LRTA-MRT Line 2), The system name are the same as the operator's name officially just as any other system in the world such as that of Jacksonville Transit Authority which uses "JTA" in the template. With this I suggest correcting the system name to follow the format used in this template by replacing Manila LRT with LRTA and Manila MRT with MRTC.

Some users might fail to notice these official system names used in the system maps and insist on "media colloquial" terms so in order for everyone to see and know that the above suggested names are what should be followed, here are some of the official route maps deployed in trains and stations:

Route Map above the door of an MRT-2 train showing the official system name "LRTA" and not "LRT".
  • More images and links to follow soon

With that I hope this would lead to the necessary changes to make things better here at wikipedia. PhilippineRevolution (talk) 11:00, 21 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

There are a handful that are inconsistent (e.g. messed up spacing in MSR, only using an acronym in MSR and several others, different background color for GCRTA, etc.), but they are very few and should be fixed; the are not justification for a "my transit system is somehow different" variance. The wording is present because the logos are meaningless to non-locals; it's not there just to disambiguate between two systems with the same acronym. Per MOS:ICONS, if we removed anything it would be the logos, not the wording.

Hello, I would request the addition of the Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM) to the template for the Montreal region in replacement of the AMT (Agence métropolitaine de transport). The AMT was dissolved and replaced by the RTM since June 1, 2017. Piper13 (talk) 11:31, 16 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Fait. I kept AMT as an alias for RTM, so as not to break the pages that call this template with title=AMT as a parameter. If at some point all the pages using that parameter are updated, then this alias can be removed, but there's no real need to do that, other than speeding up the parser by a nanosecond or two. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 13:59, 16 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

New template for REM rapid transit project

edit

There is a new 67-kilometre rapid transit network planned for Montreal called the Réseau électrique métropolitain. It will have 27 stations, 3 branches and construction is supposed to start in late 2017/early 2018. There is no template yet so I thought it would be a good idea to create one.

Here's the map of the network for the official color and station names: https://www.cdpqinfra.com/sites/default/files/map_static/carte-rem_27-06-2017_en.png

If you create the template, I can implement it to each station myself then. Mtlfiredude (talk) 18:04, 14 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Not done for now: per WP:NOT#CRYSTAL. This can be added when this transit system actually exists.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  05:30, 30 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
When it is U/C is it possible to implement it then? Mtlfiredude (talk) 19:58, 30 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Mtlfiredude: If you mean "under construction", I'm not certain but would be inclined toward "yes, if there are already articles for the system and articles or sections for its stations". That might even be the answer right now. I've asked three of the transit-related wikiprojects' talk pages for some input on this; we should probably arrive at a general consensus on when to add new systems or extensions of systems to the template, rather than it being up to random TemplateEditor interpretation.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  06:55, 1 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
@SMcCandlish: From a WikiProject Stations' point of view, I'd say once there is sufficient confirmation from reliable secondary sources, it should be ok to start making templates. From a TfD's point of view, I would also add the prerequisite that most if not all incorporated stations should have an article to avoid red links. This ensures the template can actually be used for navigation, which is a prime goal of such templates. Looking at Réseau électrique métropolitain, both seem to be fulfilled. Just in case, you could add something like "(planned)" to the middle cell. --HyperGaruda (talk) 16:37, 1 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Or at least a section or other link target for a station; not everyone is convinced that we need any more stubs about stations.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  17:56, 1 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
@SMcCandlish: "Planned" is perfect until the project is U/C (it will be within the next 4-6 months). I contributed a lot to the REM article with sources and created a page for every station using more sources. This isn't a hypothetical project, it is fully funded and approved and the winning consortium will be announced within 2 months. Mtlfiredude (talk) 18:20, 2 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'll say this; I once added parameters for the proposed LIRR Grand Central Branch. I would not add material for the IND Locust Valley Line, or the IRT Utica Avenue Line, or the IND Rego Park Line until I know for a fact that they were going to be built, even though all those projects have been on the books for decades. ---------User:DanTD (talk) 12:38, 6 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I get that. Nobody wants to do work for nothing by creating a template for an unbuilt project. However, this project is fully funded by federal and provincial governments ($1.3B each) and is being built by a pension fund manager. The Provincial funding came in March 2017 (source: http://montrealgazette.com/news/quebec/quebec-budget-2017-is-funding-earmarked-for-montreals-electric-train-project) while the Federal funding was announced in June 2017 (source: http://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/federal-money-moves-rem-closer-to-funding-6-million-price-tag). On September 27, 2017, the Quebec Assembly passed Bill 137 which basically allows the REM to be built by CDPQ Infra (source: http://beta.radio-canada.ca/nouvelle/1058290/reseau-electrique-metropolitain-rem-caisse-depot-projet-loi-adoption-assemblee-nationale-deputes-quebec). The call for tenders was launched last year and consortiums were selected in February 2017 (source: https://www.cdpqinfra.com/en/content/rem-project-call-tenders-selection-process-and-protection-confidential-information), and it is expected that the winning consortium will be announced by end of october/early november. Since this isn't a public project, the chances of it being cancelled for political reasons is none. Mtlfiredude (talk) 13:41, 6 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Icon removal

edit

Per MOS:TEXTASIMAGES, and WP:ICONDECORATION, the icons need to be removed. A global consensus has been established at the MoS that this usage of icons is inappropriate, any local consensus cannot override. James (talk/contribs) 21:21, 14 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

As a principal author of that guideline, I don't think this is quite a correct interpretation. We shouldn't use icons as replacement for text, but they're permissible as adjuncts to text when they're helpful, and are more permissible in navigation templates than elsewhere.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  18:16, 18 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Replace certain images with text per MOS:TEXTASIMAGES. James (talk/contribs) 16:45, 17 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Not done just yet. I think the transit-related wikiprojects are likely to object and will want to see the logo followed by the text. I agree that the logo by itself is insufficient; the words in many of them are illegible at this size. But each is a recognizable symbol to those familiar with the transit system in question.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  18:11, 18 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@SMcCandlish: I understand your reluctance, but the current situation is untenable, particularly for those using screen readers. Could you at least temporarily add text next to the images I pointed out in the diff? James (talk/contribs) 11:03, 28 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@James Allison:   Done, since the RfC result will either be to keep both or remove the image. However, there was no screen-reader problem, since the images have alt text; it was just a problem for sighted readers. There were also two errors in the sandboxed code, but I fixed those.  — SMcCandlish ¢ >ʌⱷ҅ʌ<  07:57, 29 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

REM

edit

Hi, is it possible to do the rail box for the Réseau express métropolitain project in Montreal? The winning bidders (SNC-Lavalin & Alstom) have been announced and construction will start in April 2018. Source: https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/the-reseau-express-metropolitain-project-officially-launches-673368213.html

I have already created pages for all the stations.

Mtlfiredude (talk) 18:20, 9 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

That seems a bit WP:NOT#CRYSTAL. What's the encyclopedic need for something so "not yet"?  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  05:30, 19 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Last time, you guys said there was no official launch so you wouldn't do it. Now that I provide source that there is an official launch in April and that the bidders have been chosen, you still won't do it? I don't get it... Mtlfiredude (talk) 13:47, 23 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
There was a groundbreaking ceremony on April 12[1] and construction work is currently ongoing which you can see here: (https://rem.info/en/works-info). So is it possible to get the template done? Mtlfiredude (talk) 09:52, 14 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

|Amtrak Arrow=[[File:Amtrak Logo.svg|50px|link=Amtrak]] [[Amtrak]]

This will be used on older Amtrak articles, an example being Union Station (Columbus, Ohio). (A version without the text in the image should be added soon) Cards84664 (talk) 16:49, 11 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Cards84664: I added it with the File:Amtrak logo (1971).png version to be consistent with colors, but I'm not sure why the template wants to link to a capitalized "Logo" in the file name – see User:Gfoley4/sandbox2. Also I think there's some template you need to have to actually ping admins/template editors to see this request, FYI. GFOLEY FOUR!16:09, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Gfoley4: It probably wants to link to a capitalized "Logo" because you capitalized it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Cards84664 (talk) 16:23, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
ah, of course. Looking at the usage of it now on my sandbox, I think maybe a version of just the "pointless arrow" without Amtrak words would be better. Don't think there's a file of it out there now, maybe I can fire up photoshop if I'm free tomorrow. GFOLEY FOUR!16:30, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Gfoley4: Can you modify the old style so the text is before the arrow? (Along with a non-breaking space)

Cards84664 (talk) 20:12, 15 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Cards84664: You think that would look better? I just went off the current Amtrak, with the logo beforehand. I think it looks alright now when in the infobox e.g. Harpers Ferry station. I feel like if there's a non-breaking space it might mess up the spacing. GFOLEY FOUR!05:11, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Depends. I just happened to notice the font is the same as the text that would be on the left normally. Cards84664 (talk) 10:54, 16 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Gfoley4: We could make a smaller image version for templates that have spacing problems. Cards84664 (talk) 00:15, 22 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
