MEA have no plans to introduce the A380 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.44.169.37 (talk) 08:04, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yup exactly. Why would an airline that small order such a big airplane? —Compdude123 16:26, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
MEA parent company
editI have changed the parent company to the Banque du Liban, and have changed the lead paragraph to Middle East Airlines Air Liban SAL. Middle East Airlines has the legal name of Middle East Airlines Air Liban SAL. This is similar to Qantas Airways having the legal name of Qantas Airways Limited, Singapore Airlines having parent company of Singapore Airlines Limited, etc, etc. WP:MOS tells us that the lead paragraph should show this legal name. The parent company of Middle East Airlines Air Liban SAL is the entity which has enough voting shares in the company to be able to dictate board decisions. As per information in the article, this is Banque du Liban, which holds some 99.37% of the shares of Middle East Airlines Air Liban SAL (doing business as (d/b/a) Middle East Airlines. If there is any confusion with this, please leave a message and it can be discussed. --Russavia 14:58, 16 August 2007 (UTC)
- Middle East Airlines / Air Liban SAL may be the legal name of the airline, but the airline hasn't been branded Middle East Air lines / Air Liban since the late 1960's and would be misleading to include it as the name of the airline. Middle East East Airlines / Air Liban SAL remains as the legal name of the parent company which in addition to owning the airline, owns three other 100% owned independently operated subsidaries: Middle East Airport Services, Middle East Airlines Ground Handling, and MidEast Aircraft Services Company. Banque du Liban is the central bank of Lebanon, a part of the Lebanese government and is not the parent company of MEA.
- Under Lebanese law, MEA is considered a private company. Banque du Liban did not assume a any stake in MEA until 1996 (or it might have been 1997) when they bailed MEA out of impending bankruptcy. To ensure that MEA remained a private company, legislation was passed to ensure that the management and operations of MEA were not controled by the government. Banque du Liban cannot legally interfere with MEA's operations or decision making. Banque du Liban for three years now has been trying to sell off its shares in MEA, but the worsening situation in Lebanon since Rafic Hariri's assassination has prevented this from happening. Banque du Liban assumed a majority stake in MEA simply to prevent it from bankruptcy since it is the national airline of Lebanon.
- If you still insist that Banque du Liban is the parent company of MEA, then you will need to change the parent company of EgyptAir from EgyptAir Airline Company to Central Bank of Egypt and countless of other airlines that are state-owned. MEA707 17:42, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- I have re-added Banque du Liban as the parent company as it fulfills all of the requirements of a parent company. I have gone thru this on Singapore Airlines now for over a year, and have no desire to get into a protacted dispute on this article. It is irrelevant whether Banque du Liban has a say in management or not, as 99.37% of the voting shares are held by Banque du Liban, which by legal definition of all countries laws dealing with companies, places Banque du Liban as the parent company. Middle East Airlines Air Liban SAL is the same entity as Middle East Airlines - the former is the legal name, the latter is the trading name. We do not deal with ultimate parent companies on WP, only the direct parent company, and the direct parent company of MEA is Banque du Liban SAL. Additionally, according to this reliable source, the subsidiaries of Middle East Airlines are:
MASCO Lebanon 100.00% Middle East Airlines Ground Handling Lebanon 100.00% Middle East Airports Services Lebanon 100.00% Lebanese Beirut Airport Catering Company Lebanon 77.50%
This has nothing to do with portraying airlines as government-owned or anything else, but creating articles which deal with companies correctly, and nothing more. --Россавиа Диалог 08:14, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
