Gift of the Gab

edit

Will that be anything to do with the title? Go Futurama! Sp3000 10:34, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, I think it has more to do with "gift of the magi", from the Bible's Nativity story. Plus, it's a Christmas episode, so more connection there. Or read one of the deleted cultural references below. --SpyHunter29 (talk) 15:09, 22 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

incorrect airing info

edit

The opening paragraph reads, "It was the final episode of the 20th century" However, this episode aired at the end of 1999. The 20th century ended at the end of 2000, and so the information is incorrect. I'll alter it...--Tiberius47 13:15, 17 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cultural References

edit
  • Milhouse sings "Sisters are doin' it for themselves!", a song by the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin.
  • The toy, Funzo, is a parody of the popular Furby dolls (although the Furby dolls were mentioned in the story line as an example of a popular toy).
  • In the episode, Lisa is writing on the blackboard: "I will not do math in class". A parody to the show's own chalkboard gag. Bart even laughs at her and comments, "The ironing is delicious." (leading Lisa to correct him, "The word is 'irony'.")
  • Gary Coleman once worked as a security guard in real life. Coleman spoofed Arnold's (Coleman's character in Diff'rent Strokes) catchphrase, "Wha'choo talkin' 'bout, Willis?", three times.
  • At the end, the narrator says Mr. Burns was visited by three ghosts in the night which showed him the error of his ways, a homage to A Christmas Carol. A further homage occurs when Gary Coleman says, "Wha'choo talkin' 'bout, everyone?", in the manner of Tiny Tim's quote, "God bless us, everyone."
  • The narrator also says that Moe, in his annual suicide attempt, was shown what the world would be like without him after sticking his head in his oven. This is a reference to the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life.
  • This episode's title is a pun on O. Henry's short story The Gift of the Magi.
  • The musicians that participate in Krusty the Clown's Krusty's Christmas Fun-O-Rama are Beck and The Dixie Chicks. Téa Leoni and Patrick Ewing also make an appearance on the special.
