"extremely ethnically diverse"

edit

Actually, no it isn't. The largest racial group- Asians- make up 7/10ths of the population. Whoever wrote this nonsense clearly thinks "diversity" just means a low number of whites. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:630:12:2B24:9176:FEED:1708:232C (talk) 22:17, 24 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Natives

edit

I hadn't heard of Benoy Soman, and he doesn't have a Wikipedia entry, so I looked the name up in Google. I can't see anyone noteworthy of that name referenced, so I've removed him from the Natives list. If he is noteworthy, please explain who he is.

Sections

edit

The article could do with a heavy edit - dividing into sections, removal of advertising, more encyclopaedic style ... the block of text at the front is beginning to read like a stream of conciousness novel. Kbthompson 00:23, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Earlier history

edit

I suspect that a lot of this was originally written by someone from the local Council. As a resident I recognise the style, in particular the attempt to downplay the status of East Ham, the over concentration on modern 'celebrities' and the inverted snobbery of (false) claims to East End status.

I have added a number of items using information taken from a book by a former mayor Alfred Stokes "East Ham from village to County Borough". I believe this to be reasonably accurate, however as usual such secondary sources will need to be verified.

Duplication

edit

Having edited this page I now find that there is a second wiki page for The County Borough of East Ham that could be used to replace much of this article and includes information from the same source. Suggest merge/replace —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.31.111.163 (talkcontribs)

That's a view, but then it would be the only place in Greater London without a previous authority page. This page is about the district of East Ham in the London Borough of Newham; this area does not include the districts of Beckton and Little Ilford that are included in the County Borough of East Ham - or should they be merged too?
Having separate articles makes sense if you think about it. Kbthompson 01:01, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK provided there are clear links between the pages, they are all equally accessible and the facts match up. Manor Park and Beckton have statements that they were part of Essex until 1965, when in fact they were within the County Borough of East Ham; althoguh Little Ilford is clearer on the matter. Also yesterday (although not today) it was not possible to access the County Borough pages from the search box. (I tried several times and was careful with the spelling!) The East Ham page tried to ignore/gloss over the fact that the area had had an independant status for 50 years.

The former authorities tend to be listed in the London Borough pages, with a clear link there. That partly reflects the way people filled in the districts - from the top down. I did convert the ... became a County Borough into a link, so that will take you to the former Borough of East Ham (to whose Burghers I remain eternally grateful for paying for my education!). Often there's a few people on these pages, often trying to do a lot, I like the fact that someone is trying to write a bit of history here! With a bit more text, it might be an idea to structure it with section headings, but it was very sparse before - see Barking for an example.
Often the articles will reflect a particular PoV, and if you disagree, you should go ahead and change it. Certainly a background to the development of the area would be an appropriate addition. It would be good if you could find references for your additions. Kbthompson 14:47, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The material I heve entered is all from Alfred Stokes book, previuosly mentioned.
