And it's nice to be back
editThank you, Will. Much appreciated. I'm enjoying it and learning quite a bit about cricket in the 19th century at the moment. Best wishes. BlackJack | talk page 18:11, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Chuck
editHeya. It's Wayward Genius by Greg Growden. Chuck seemed mad as a cut snake and the section on his living rough is hard to read but recommended anyway. --Roisterer (talk) 02:15, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Cricket nicknames
editHi WillE - I see you're going through the cricket nicknames list removing the unsourced. it's about time that happened, but it's worth storing the unsourced ones somewhere (e.g., a section of the talk page) in case sources can be found for the others - like this one, which you removed today (see bottom of page). Grutness...wha? 23:41, 16 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. History of Test cricket from 1877 to 1883
edit"Its highlights were two games against a Combined Australia XI, which later came to be recognised as the first Test Matches. By whom?" The matches are now universally recognised as Tests, but I don't know whether who first called them that is a question that can be answered. I think I remember reading that the term "Test match" originated in Australia some ten or fifteen years after this, but which writer or journalist first applied it retrospectively to the 1877 matches might be hard to pin down. The Imperial Cricket Conference wasn't founded until 1909, if I recall correctly, and only subsequent to that could there be said to be an official definition, even though the term had been in common use for several decades. Ditto
editJH, old chap! How the devil are you? I mourn the lack of activity in the quiz. :(
This question has bugged me for years. Someone suggested on the Ask Steven Facebook page that George Giffen was the driver behind the acceptance of a list of matches that he favoured. No idea if he drew it up. This would make an interesting research project. WillE (talk) 09:38, 8 August 2016 (UTC)

editCoggeshall and boudica
editHi there, I note on the talk page for the Defeat of Boudica you mention that Boudica is rumoured to be buried in Coggeshall. I'm certainly not seeking hard evidence for this but I have maintained the Coggeshall page over many years and would love to know any source/folklore for this claim. Any chance you could help?
