editSomeone screwed the formatting up, otherwise, good article! I edited the bit that said he was only the 4th player to move from Everton to Liverpool. In fact these two clubs have traded more players than any other pair of English clubs. He is however the most recent player to do so, and the only player to play for both sides against each other in the same season. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.171.114 (talk) 00:45, 15 January 2014 (UTC) He has recently converted to Islam
Mozambique
editThe guy was born in Mozambique, not "Portuguese Mozambique". And there should not be a Portuguese flag, there should be a Mozambique one.74.72.251.23 12:42, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Abel Xavier was born in the Portuguese overseas province of Mozambique in 1972. The flag was not today's Mozambique flag, for sure. The flag used was the Portuguese one. I don't even know if he has Mozambican nationality. He was born in Portuguese territory, and so, he is a Portuguese national. Please, don't use anachronical flags. That flag was created in 1982. We're talking about an event (his birth) that occurred in the 70's. Joaopais 20:57, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Melbourne Victory
editMelbourne Victory FC has pinched Abel Xavier from LA Galaxy at the last moment: http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,21745664-5000940,00.html "Victory also announced yesterday it had signed former Portuguese international and Middlesbrough defender Abel Xavier"

Following Abel widely reported conversion and name change, this article should be renamed and page redirects created Codf1977 (talk) 13:55, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Support, out of respect for the player. Seems pretty straightforward. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 14:16, 30 December 2009 (UTC)
- Oppose He is not commonly known as Faisal. See WP:COMMONNAME--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 23:03, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
- To quote WP:COMMONNAME if an organization changes its name, it is often reasonable to assume that sources will be switching to the new name. It is not necessary to give weight to sources which are known to be out of date.Codf1977 (talk) 10:26, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
- If Mr. Xavier does something notable after adopting his new name then an argument could be made that the article name should change. Until then, it should stay as is.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 07:08, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- I disagree - if someone changes their name they change their name the notable test does not 'restart' Codf1977 (talk) 09:59, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

- Comment Cat Stevens looks like a similar situation.--SaskatchewanSenator (talk) 10:27, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose for the moment. In the event it is shown that post name changes reliable sources are using the new name with frequency, then this should be revisited. Name changes, for more often than things, are ignored by others.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:33, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Humorous anecdote
editPerhaps this should be included as a humorous anecdote in this article. "When the Galaxy's Portuguese defender Abel Xavier couldn't produce an I.D., his wineglass disappeared too. "What is this?" the 34-year-old Xavier thundered. "I have a kid who can drink." The other players laughed hysterically, partly because the waiter hadn't recognized the world's most famous athlete and partly because Beckham and Xavier were so used to being mobbed in Europe that they didn't bother carrying identification. Welcome to soccer in the U.S., guys." From http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/the_bonus/06/29/beckham.book/index.html#ixzz1I0OuVcsK VarunRajendran (talk) 16:10, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved. (closed by non-admin page mover) EggRoll97 (talk) 22:55, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Faisal Xavier → Abel Xavier – Page was moved unilaterally. The source about him changing his name when he retired (2008)...does not use the word Faisal once and calls him Abel three times, in 2022. [1] Even though the source is from the Anadolu Agency, a state-run agency from Turkey, whose government is not afraid of embellishing the influence of Islam, they're still calling him Abel. There's also a question of WP:OR in the mover's assumption that he changed his first name but kept the middle name Luís. Abel Xavier's verified Facebook still uses the name Abel [2] as does an Instragram account that is not verified but looks personal [3]. His Facebook even uploaded a new cover photo in June with the name Abel Xavier and a monogram logo of his initials. I think this is a case like Nicolas Anelka or Franck Ribéry in which a new Muslim adopts a name for his religious rites but uses his birth name legally and professionally. The social media shows this is certainly not a Muhammad Ali case of rejecting a birth name. I think that after this vote, the page should be move protected due to the very understandable tendency people could have to misinterpret this situation (see 2009 discussion). - Support per nom. Similar example to e.g. Sinéad O'Connor who changed their name long after they were famous, but is rightly known by their earlier name. GiantSnowman 17:24, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
