Comment: None of the sources actually give a detailed coverage of Rudolf Gonzalez. Many sources are simply mention Gonzalez once in a gallery announcement, and the only two sources that do not [1][2], give very surface level commentary about his art. Rodolfo "Rudolf, Rudy, Ody" Gonzalez (Filipino: Rodolfo Sarmiento Gonzalez, February 27, 1955 – March 5, 2020) was a Filipino painter known for his cloudscape, seascape, still life, and abstract art works.
Early life and education
editGonzalez was born on February 27, 1955, to Rick Gonzalez and Nemy Sarmiento in Manila, Philippines. He was the eldest of six children, with brothers Rodel Gonzalez[1] and Naldy Gonzalez who were the co-founders of the Filipino pop band Side A (band) in 1985.[2][3]
Rudolf started exploring art at 8 with the influence of his father, Rick, and grandfather, Felix Gonzalez, a first-generation Gonzalez artist[4]. By age 12, he sold his first 9 x 12 seascape in their family gallery along Mabini Street in Ermita, Manila.
He studied architecture and fine arts at Far Eastern University.
Style and influence
editGonzalez specialized in cloudscapes, seascapes, and still life. He spent several years in the United States, where he honed his realism skills by observing the coastlines of Hawaii. His style developed from those of his admired artists, including Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, and Alfred Sisley.
Career and latest exhibitions
editHe has participated in exhibitions in the Philippines, Hawaii, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Japan throughout his career. Some of his latest set of exhibitions before his death were through Galerie Joaquin's Chinese New Year Show in 2015,[5] Galerie Joaquin's "Unparalleled: The Art of the Masters" in 2020,[6] Galerie Joaquin's "Unparalleled Inspirations: An Interactive Approach to Works of the Vanguards of Philippine Art" in 2016,[7] Galerie Raphael's "The Exquisite Collection: Davao" in 2019,[8] Galerie Nicolas' "Romancing in the Sea" in 2015, [9] and Galerie Nicolas' "Sublime Seas: Rudolf Gonzalez's 50 Years in Art"[10]
Death
editHe died at the age of 65 on March 5, 2020, in Las Piñas, Philippines.
