Alias El Mexicano (aka 'The Mexican') is a 2013 Colombian television series produced by Fox Telecolombia for RCN TV, loosely based on the story of Colombian drug lord Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha and which mixes scenes with stories and fiction. The series has been criticized for its increased focus on entirely fictional characters, taking away the spotlight from the real characters; however, the performances of Juan Sebastián Calero, Fabio Rubiano and Rafael Novoa were praised.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]

Plot

edit

At 15, Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha left his town with his pride wounded when the woman he had set his sights on called him a liar for giving her a stone that was passed off as an emerald. Years later, working for the emerald businessman Gilberto Molina, he found a legitimate gem in the emerald mines that, instead of taking him to his imaginary lover, helped him buy his first shipment of marijuana in La Guajira, Colombia. Seeing the business that was opening up before his eyes, Gonzalo Rodríguez Gacha understood that drug consumption in the United States could only be satisfied by setting up an industrial production chain that originated in the plains of Colombia and that in less than 5 years became the nucleus of a multinational cocaine sales company with global reach, thus becoming the true leader, behind the scenes, of the Medellín Cartel.
