HyperOS[a] (Chinese: 澎湃OS; pinyin: Péngpài OS; lit. 'Surge OS'), officially named Xiaomi HyperOS (Chinese: 小米澎湃OS; pinyin: Xiǎomǐ Péngpài OS), is an operating system developed by Xiaomi. It unifies MIUI, Xiaomi's Vela OS, Mina OS and car-focused operating system's software architecture[2] for its smartphones, IoT devices and other Xiaomi hardware such as its automobiles. It was announced on X and Weibo on October 17, 2023,[3] and debuted alongside Xiaomi 14 Series on October 26, 2023.[4][5] It is replacing MIUI gradually as of 2024.[6]

History
editIn 2017, Xiaomi was developing Xiaomi Vela OS to use with its own IoT devices. It is based on NuttX[7] and was announced in 2020.[8][9]
In 2019, Xiaomi pre-developed Xiaomi Mina OS, a microkernel security system.[2]
In 2021, following its decision to make automobiles, Xiaomi was developing its own car-focused operating system.[2]
In 2022, Xiaomi decided to unity the aforementioned operating systems' software architecture, and HyperOS has finished its research and development.[2]
The new operating system was announced on X and Weibo on October 17, 2023, and debuted alongside Xiaomi 14 Series on October 26, 2023, at 7 p.m. CST.[4][5]
In October 2023, MIUI's social media accounts were rebranded to Xiaomi HyperOS.[10][11] HyperOS was then officially launched in Beijing, with the first batch of compatible models announced.[12] HyperOS was launched globally at MWC 2024 in Spain.[13][14]
Xiaomi HyperOS 2 version was launched with Xiaomi's proprietary self developed new kernel : Xiaomi HyperCore Kernel.

Features
editCore architecture
editHyperOS introduces changes to its underlying architecture, aiming to optimize hardware resource management. The system is designed to adapt firmware size for different hardware configurations. HyperOS is designed to reduce mobile device system firmware size; for example, the Xiaomi 14's system firmware is reported to be 9GB, 3GB less than the previous generation. HyperOS also claims improvements in OTA update speeds and reduced storage requirements.[15]
Cross-device connectivity
editHyperOS implements a unified cross-device connectivity framework called Xiaomi HyperConnect.[16] This framework is designed to allow multiple devices to share a single codebase. The system aims to enable real-time networking between smart devices, with control available through a centralized interface on phones, tablets, and other devices. Hardware capabilities can be used across devices, such as tablets accessing phone cameras or 5G modules.[17]
AI integration
editXiaomi claims that HyperOS incorporates AI features on compatible hardware platforms. These include functionalities including image editing, text generation, and predictive input. The system introduces "Xiaomi HyperMind," which attempts to automates smart home device controls by learning user habits.[18]
Security measures
editHyperOS uses end-to-end encryption through a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) kernel. Xiaomi reports using a self-developed TEE kernel for MediaTek devices but not Qualcomm platforms. The system can manage permissions for cross-device functionality.[19][note 1]
User interface
editHyperOS includes a redesigned system interface and restructured graphics subsystem, with new visual effects and redesigned application interfaces. Over 600 languages are stated to be supported.[20]
HyperOS 2
editHyperOS 2.0 introduced upgrades with a focus on cross-device connectivity, AI features, and improved system performance.[21]
HyperCore
editHyperCore is a new core system aimed at improving system stability, graphics, network performance, and security. HyperCore claims to optimize over 25,000 usage scenarios, and reduce CPU idle time by 19% while improving task cycles and memory latency.[22]
HyperConnect
editHyperConnect extends connectivity capabilities allowing Xiaomi tablets and phones to be controlled from each other. The cross-device clipboard supports copy-pasting, and dual camera streaming between Xiaomi devices is supported. In China, HyperConnect offers compatibility with Apple devices, allowing Xiaomi devices to share files with Apple, and open Apple files like Keynote, Pages, and Numbers.
HyperAI
editHyperAI has AI-powered features, such as deep video analysis to create cinematic depth effects on lock screens. Static wallpapers can be animated with AI-generated content, and Mi Canvas can convert sketches into paintings on Xiaomi tablets.
Visual and performance enhancements
editHyperOS 2.0 is stated to introduce:
Smoother transitions and 3D weather visuals 54.9% reduction in app launch delays on smartphones 15% reduction in app launch delays on tablets 25% increase in heart rate measurement accuracy on wearables 23% improvement in third-party app launch speeds on wearables
Supported devices
editXiaomi HyperOS 1.0 is compatible with all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones running Android 13 or later. Eight phone models come pre-installed with HyperOS 1.0, including the Xiaomi 14 series (three models in four versions), Xiaomi Civi 4 Pro, Redmi K70 series (three models), and Redmi Turbo 3. Two tablets, the Xiaomi Pad 6S Pro 12.4 and Redmi Pad Pro, also ship with HyperOS 1.0 out of the box.
Additionally, 63 mobile devices are eligible for an upgrade from MIUI to HyperOS 1.0. This includes 26 Xiaomi phones, 7 Xiaomi tablets, 28 Redmi phones, and 2 Redmi tablets. As of now, 19 phones and 1 tablet are receiving development versions of HyperOS.
Currently, the development version of Xiaomi's Hyper OS has stopped receiving updates. In the future, Xiaomi will replace the current development version model with a new Beta version model. Therefore, going forward, Hyper OS will offer two versions: a Beta version for early internal testers and an official version for all users.

Controversies
editAlleged name change before release
editIn August 2023, during the promotional phase of the Redmi K60 Extreme Edition after its release, Xiaomi stated that this phone would be among the first to upgrade to MIUI 15, promising five years of OTA updates.[30] However, Xiaomi ultimately did not release MIUI 15 but instead officially announced Xiaomi HyperOS. Some netizens believe that Xiaomi HyperOS was a temporary rebranding of MIUI 15 for promotional convenience. Additionally, on November 4, 2023, during a Bilibili live stream by the Chinese digital media Geekerwan, the host Yunfei revealed that the system version sent for media testing in September for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was MIUI 15, not HyperOS.[31]
Xiaomi has not explained the cancellation of MIUI 15, and the promotional material regarding the five-year system OTA updates for the Redmi K60 Extreme Edition has not been retracted. On December 1, 2023, the first official version of Xiaomi HyperOS was pushed to this model.
Alleged "Android shell"
editSimilar to the Harmony OS, Xiaomi HyperOS faced widespread netizen controversy over whether it was entirely self-developed and accusations of being an "Android shell" upon its unveiling. Addressing this controversy, Jin Fan, Vice President of Xiaomi Group's Mobile Department and head of the System Software Department, stated in an interview with Flypig that Xiaomi has the capability to use its own kernel or the Linux kernel to launch an operating system functionally and UI-wise identical to the released HyperOS. He suggested that the reason Xiaomi uses the Android kernel for phones and tablets is due to considerations of the existing software ecosystem.[32]
Restrictions on unlocking the bootloader
editTo prevent users from engaging in game cheating, illegal activities, or other violations after obtaining root access to their phones, and to avoid some users attributing to Xiaomi bugs that due to modifying the system, Xiaomi has gradually restricted the ability to unlock the bootloader on phones sold in mainland China since the release of HyperOS. Also, HyperOS updates, or upgrade from MIUI, are not available for unlocked phones.[33]
Additionally, users must now complete a quiz successfully to apply for bootloader unlocking. The time required for binding the phone has been shortened from 168 hours to 72 hours.[34] Xiaomi also imposes some restrictions on unlocking the bootloader for regions outside mainland China.
The xda-developers Web site has a forum on unlocking the Xiaomi bootloader without going through the company's procedure.[35]
Technical white paper errors
editOn December 7, 2023, Xiaomi held a Xiaomi HyperOS experience communication meeting, explaining some details, underlying technical architecture, functions, and designs of HyperOS,[36] and simultaneously released the HyperOS technical white paper. However, netizens discovered numerous typos and formatting errors due to document conversion in the publicly released white paper,[37] sparking heated discussions online. Xiaomi has since corrected and re-uploaded the white paper to address these errors.

The underlying architecture varies between different hardware platforms. Please refer to the actual performance. The self-developed TEE system and system application security enhancement functions currently only support some models on the MTK platform.
