Bot
editI've made a request at at WT:Bot requests#Tag talk pages of articles about English with Template:WikiProject English language to have the articles within the project scope bot-tagged, since doing it by hand or even with AWB might be an enormous amount of effort. I'm not sure if BOTREQ requires a showing of support before action is taken to implement a bot, but I get the sense that this might be the case. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 09:55, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

What to do about List of English words of Japanese origin
editThe article List of English words of Japanese origin is very bad. 99% of the words are Japanese words never used in normal English contexts. It needs some attention. The problem is mentioned on stuff on the talk page from back in 2013! I don’t know quite enough about the rules here to fix it, but someone here must. Thanks! Inconsistent examples in talk page templates
editThe following three templates have an inconsistent list of example words:
- {{American English}} lists "color, labor, traveled".
- {{Australian English}} lists "colour, realise, program, labour (but Labor Party)"
- {{British English}} lists "colour, travelled, centre, realise, defence, artefact".
- {{Canadian English}} lists "colour, centre, travelled, realize, analyze".
We should have to harmonise them to the following:
- {{American English}} should list "labor, traveled, center, realize, analyze, defense, artifact".
- {{Australian English}} should list "labour (but Labor Party), travelled, centre, realise, analyse, defence, artefact".
- {{British English}} should list "labour, travelled, centre, realise, analyse, defence, artefact".
- {{Canadian English}} should list "labour, travelled, centre, realize, analyze, defence, artifact".
Same thing should be done on other dialects as well. Thoughts? --Soumya-8974 talk contribs subpages 12:17, 10 October 2020 (UTC)
- Normalizing the examples makes sense. However "other dialects" templates mostly should not exist, but should redirect to British or American English, as they are indistinguishable from one or other in an encyclopedic register. That is, we have no articles written in Jamaican English, Phillipine English, etc. Those are spoken dialects, and formal writing in most Commonwealth dialects is the same. I think we already have
{{Commonwealth English}}
for this reason. (Phillipine, Okinawan, and Guamian, Puerto Rican, and US Virgin Islandian, and a handful of others are American-derived). Some probable exceptions that should exists are for Indian English, South African English, maybe Irish English (for political reasons if nothing else), and maybe New Zealand English, though I think the last of these and Australian could be merged into a{{Australian and New Zealand English}}
template, since there doesn't seem to be an encyclopedic-register difference. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 05:11, 12 May 2021 (UTC)
"Internet" vs. "internet"
editPlease see Talk:Internet#Request for comment: should "internet" be capitalized as a proper noun?
There's some debate there about what a proper name is, about distinguishing between a proper-noun phrase and a common-noun phrase that refer to different topics ("the Internet" vs. "an internet"), and about whether news style guides (cf. WP:NOT#NEWS policy) should be considered reliable for how to write about technical topics. — SMcCandlish ☏ ¢ 😼 14:34, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

Greater Toronto English needs expansion and improvement
editI don't know if this is the right place to be putting this topic on here but, I need some help and advice on how this article can be improved and worked on, because as of right now this article barely has any in-depth topic information about the history, vocabularies and grammar. Also, Greater Toronto English has very strong similarities to Multicultural London English, regardless of having a different accent, few different slangs, etc. But overall this topic barely even gets mentioned on Google about its origin of history, and vocabularies, and I don't know how this wiki article is gonna get improved. So if anybody has any suggestions on what I can do or if y'all can help the article, I would appreciate it, thanks. Ninjamaster1099 (talk) 16:56, 22 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
editI have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

SVG-ing the nav box locator map
editHi. Just realized this project existed, thought I should post for comment.
The clickable PNG locator map for English used in the nav boxes is difficult to read and is missing a large number of relevant links. At the map lab we're working on an SVG replacement that is already much easier to read. Comments? Are we missing anything?

Finding reliable sources for "sat" and "stood" to mean "sitting" and "standing" in British and American English for use in articles
editI started a discussion in Talk:List of words having different meanings in American and British English (M–Z)#Relevance of "sat" and "stood" after my attempt to include the word "sat", which is commonly used in British slang to mean "sitting" in the present tense, in List of words having different meanings in American and British English (M–Z) was rejected and the word "stood" removed from the list on the ground of my failure to find a reliable source for the rarity of said meanings in American English. As I am still having difficulty in finding a reliable source and do not feel the issue has been resolved on the talk page with contributions only from the user who rejected my edit, I considered started an RfC but according to Wikipedia:Requests for comment it may be worthwhile to ask for help at the relevant WikiProject first. I decided to ask for help here as this appears to be a language related issue although according to Talk:Lists of words having different meanings in American and British English the article of of interest to Wikipedia:WikiProject United Kingdom, Wikipedia:WikiProject Indexes and Wikipedia:WikiProject Glossaries, the latter two of which are inactive.
