Thomas Malthus's magnum opus, continues to shape economic theory and social policy; from the decay of the English Poor Laws, to the works and ideas of important philosophers and economists, such as David Ricardo 4 and Adam Smith 3. His ideas, Malthusianism 5, that come from the book, explore the relationship between population growth and resources, has influenced debates on birth control, income distribution, and sustainable development. Malthus's insights remain relevant today, informing discussions on global challenges like climate change and poverty alleviation. The Blue Rider 18:35, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Add Rechtsstaat
editThe Rechtsstaat, originating in German Jurisprudence 4, embodies principles of legal certainty, equality before the law, and protection of individual rights. This principle depends on the Separation of powers 4, ensuring Judicial independence 5 and impartiality. It emphasizes the rule of law as a safeguard against arbitrary government actions, ensuring that legal processes are transparent, predictable, and fair. The doctrine has influenced constitutionalism and legal theory globally, contributing to the development of democratic governance and the protection of human rights in diverse countries

Add Lebensraum
editLebensraum, a geopolitical concept coined by Friedrich Ratzel, that posits that territories are living organisms and, as so, need to expand in order to provide for their population. This idea was notably adopted and distorted by the Nazi Party during World War II to justify their aggressive expansionist policies. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime used the concept of Lebensraum to justify their invasions and annexations of neighboring territories, particularly in Eastern Europe, under the pretext of securing land for the German people. This expansionist ideology was a key component of Nazi propaganda and played a significant role in shaping the course of World War II. The Blue Rider 17:57, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

There are three types of goods in economics, private goods, common goods and public goods. Public goods are of the interest of the state and are specially important in welfare states. They are also widely studied in the field of economics because they have a grand influence in the policies of a state; one must decide whether to allocate resources toward public goods provision through taxation and government spending or to leave their provision to the private sector, considering factors such as efficiency, equity, and the role of government in promoting societal welfare. - I'm apt to oppose films that people who aren't extreme cinephiles typically haven't heard of. Also, I feel like, in general, it requires a much higher standard of notability to include documentaries on this list as documentaries are much less influential in the cultural zeitgeist than regular movies. If we are really looking to add another documentary, I would rather add Bowling for Columbine which has much more of a cultural legacy, is way more well-known, has won more awards (though this is less impressive when compared to a movie from 1922), and is regularly considered one of the greatest documentaries of all time. Aurangzebra (talk) 20:23, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

- We already have a better, much more famous representative for Italian neorealism with Bicycle Thieves 4. We probably don't need 2. And even with the expanded quota, our film section is so small that we should probably only be listing unambiguous classics or widely-known films. It doesn't even have a Legacy section. Aurangzebra (talk) 20:47, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
- I am explicitly proposing films because I think the section is disproprtionately small compared to video games (which is at ~100), when films have been around for much longer (1890s vs 1970s) and have built up much more cultural influence over time. Besides, Bicycle Thieves is listed a tier above this already. Iostn (talk) 18:32, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- I agree that films should have more representation especially when compared to video games (I have a track record of complaining about how many video game articles we have), I just don't think this is anywhere close to being one of the best candidates. We're over quota in Level 5.While we are still adding broadly relevant concepts like Voting 5, I can't support adding one-off films like this one. starship.paint 13:14, 11 April 2024 (UTC)- VA5 is currently below quota, its only has 49,958 as of the latest update. - I was actually personally in favour of a higher quota for films, given we had one of 105 for video games which is a much more recent medium and therefore one with less titles that are as culturally influential, but I can propose some other removals from Arts. Iostn (talk) 19:18, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
- Jumping into this quite late but I would support removing video games in favor of adding more movies. I think our massive list of video game articles reflects the demographics of VA5 voters as opposed to all Wikipedia users whereas movies are a more global phenomenon. Swap Boston Red Sox 5 with Los Angeles Dodgers 5
editThe following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
When I first looked at the list of vital articles, I was surprised to see that the Red Sox were one of two MLB teams listed. Even I, a Red Sox fan, always thought the Dodgers and even the St. Louis Cardinals were more recognizable teams. Yeah, the Red Sox have the 2nd largest fan base in MLB, and that's probably why they're listed. They have more championships (9) than the Dodgers (7), but over half of them came before Warren G. Harding became president, whilst all of the Dodgers' titles have came since 1955. The Dodgers also have the slight edge in pageviews (https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=en.wiki.x.io&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=all-time&pages=Los_Angeles_Dodgers%7CBoston_Red_Sox) and also come from a bigger city. I feel like most people today outside of New England mainly knew the Red Sox for a curse that's been dead for 20 years, and you won't see the Chicago Cubs listed for their longer lasting and more well known curse. The point is, despite their smaller fanbase (still the 3rd most in MLB), all signs point to the Dodgers being the more recognizable team, and the one that's more deserving of a listing.

- Oppose removing PSG, neutral on adding Santos. As mentioned in my PSG proposal, they do suffer a little from recency bias, but they're still the most successful French club, and they still have plenty of success prior to their 2011 takeover. As for Santos, I'd like to add a Brazilian club, but I'm not sure whether they or CR Flamengo are more successful, so somebody who knows Brazilian football/soccer better than I do should weigh in on this. - Thought about nominating this myself (but intended to wait first for the proposals for Who framed Roger Rabbit and Berserk pass as I personally think those are of slightly higher priority, and with a swap against Breath of the Wild). Not even a fan but this would be the most prominent VN by most reasonable measures - overall the most-viewed in Category:Visual novels, used to have the highest "popularity" rating on vndb.org (before the site got rid of the stat), spawned a multi-billion franchise. Plus, it's an actual visual novel, unlike other important titles like Ace Attorney and YU-NO which are better categorised as adventure games (that genre being already well-represented).--LaukkuTheGreit (Talk•Contribs) 07:12, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

This genre played a crucial role in shaping early rock and roll, as well as being one of the earliest pop styles of vocal harmony groups. Often sung by "one-hit wonder" artists, which is why we don't list many here, they made many of the most celebrated songs of that era.

Rework the 20th century specific musical works
editThe section listing 20th century specific musical works is highly unrepresentative of 20th century western classical music. Of the 29 works listed, 16 were written before 1920 and only 4 after 1950, including Giazotto’s Adagio in G minor which is a musical scam (and could arguably be put in the Baroque section) and Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, which is of debatable historical importance. In addition, while atonality is a defining characteristic of a lot of classical music in this period, there is no atonal work on the list, including Cage’s 4’33’’ which doesn’t use any musical idiom. While the 20th century is full of very influent composers (59 level 5 articles), 4 composers (Debussy, Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Sibelius) have written 14 works on the list, which is almost half. While Debussy and Mahler are central figures of the evolution of musical language, Rachmaninoff and Sibelius (4 works on the list each), although important composers, shouldn’t be this overrepresented and account for a fourth of 20th century music. ThomEmilAlbe (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- I suggest at least the following removals : The Armed Man, Csárdás (Monti), Finlandia, Symphony No. 2 (Rachmaninoff), Suite bergamasque, Piano Concerto No. 3 (Rachmaninoff), and at least the following additions : Pierrot lunaire, Music for 18 musicians, Violin Concerto (Berg), Le Marteau sans maître. ThomEmilAlbe (talk) 22:39, 8 October 2024 (UTC)
- Support - excellent points, the list would benefit from these changes Makkool (talk) 11:41, 9 October 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose removing Suite bergamasque 5 (contains the world-famous Clair de lune which doesn't have a separate article) and Finlandia 5 (Sibelius's by far most famous and culturally impactful work, I'd rather remove one of his two listed symphonies), support adding Pierrot lunaire.
While I agree avant-garde music may need more representation, your addition suggestions are mostly more obscure than removals, with Pierrot lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg 4 a notable exception, plus Music for 18 musicians and Violin Concerto (Berg) have weak vitality claims. Lulu (opera) seems a more promising 12-tone composition addition than the violin concerto by the same composer. If we're struggling to remove 20th century works, other eras can perhaps be trimmed instead (I already proposed removing a less important Beethoven piece below.). Additonally, a few people's works dominating may be just natural due to Pareto distribution, although the VA project's non-overlap principle can justify counteracting this.--LaukkuTheGreit (Talk•Contribs) 12:05, 9 October 2024 (UTC)

Add Gender binary

- It's a description of a common phenomenon in society from a sociological perspective, almost exclusively from a critical perspective. This does not mean that "gender binary" as a concept is commonly discussed outside of social science circles or outside the Global North. I may support this if Social sciences weren't already over quota and after we have listed more commonly discussed topics such as Collectivism, Habit 5, Planning, Strategy, Procrastination, etc. feminist🩸 (talk) 04:38, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Social studies isn't over quota, its at 497/500. In any case, I do think more entries could be added to that section by clearing some of the excessive pop cultural subculture listings or named generations. Iostn (talk) 08:35, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

This show received some positive reception from critics and was decently popular, but doesn't seem to have been particularly influential, only lasted a few years, and didn't win any awards. It is also a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-Head 5, which is also only VA5. We do list Better Call Saul 5, which is a spinoff of Breaking Bad 5, but that is a different situation, as that show was much more popular and well-received than this one. The page is well over the quota and we need to make some cuts, so I think this show can go.

Trim Academic journals.
editThe Culture page is well over the quota, and there are a lot of very important peer-reviewed publications out there. Every discipline has their own set of academic organizations and publications, and every country has them as well. Trying to find out which should be included is very political and will cause infighting, so I'd suggest to only include the ones with the highest impact factor that are very broad and not specific to one country. For example, as a geographer Annals of the American Association of Geographers is very important to me, but I would not include it on this list. There is a lot of representation of medical journals, but many of the physical/social sciences are ignored, I don't see any engineering journals, and there are very few humanities journals. The bar for inclusion is pretty low because no one wants to say an academic journal isn't vital, so it would be best to trim the haphazard collection we have to just the most impactful and broad journals, while eliminating ones that are overly specific to a single discipline or country unless it is particularly noteworthy to avoid opening the can of worms of trying to sort academic journals. I expect this to be controversial and am not married to removing any one of these in particular, but think the ones I've listed are the ones hardest to argue against. If I subjectively didn't include something in this list, feel free to post it for discussion.GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 01:41, 23 October 2024 (UTC)

That being said, I do agree that while it has the similar level of praise as Breaking Bad 5, it's hard to justify a long-lasting impact from this show on its own when it only ended two years ago. I will add that BCS does frequently top polls on the best television shows, so maybe in a few years it can be reassessed, but at present I think the listing is TOOSOON. λ NegativeMP1 19:05, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

Drink brand additions
editThis is a group of nominations for several different popular drinks that share relatively the same rationale for why they should be added (globally recognized and long-lasting brands, lack of sodas at V5, etc). And so, I've grouped them all up under one topic.
Note that a lot of these had support in the separate proposal to add Fanta 5, though I chose to make a separate proposal so that it's easier to manage, plus there were other drinks I wanted to nominate.

Trim Academic Institutions
editThe Culture page is well over the quota, and we have a lot of Academic Institutions. I can see why this would happen, there are a lot of people in America who really love the school they went to, sports fans, and University employees who all want to see their school as vital. The bar for inclusion is pretty low because no one wants to say a University isn't vital, but it appears we don't have a very good system for why we have included some while others are ignored. It would be best to trim the haphazard collection we have to just the biggest most significant Universities. I think we should start by trimming ones from the United States, as it is clearly WAY over represented (to be fair, the US does have a lot of great school from an international standpoint). I expect this to be controversial and am not married to removing any one of these in particular (I actually expect many if not most of these to fail), but think the ones I've listed are the ones hardest to argue against. If I subjectively didn't include something in this list, feel free to post it for discussion. As an assistant professor, this hurts a bit, however there is significant room to trim the academic institutions, especially in the United States, and tough decisions need to be made. I am not affiliated with any of the schools currently on the list, and never have been, but could make the case for at least five schools being included if we don't trim this as they are just as impactful if not more so then many on the list now. It could easily be a situation where EVERY one of the 50 states flagship universities are included, which wouldn't be ideal.

@QuicoleJR I wasn't thinking of these in terms of College sports, but rather their academic contributions to the global community. American College football isn't significant from a global perspective anyway, so I don't really think University Football teams should be what makes them vital. I certainly don't think the Loughborough University is vital because of their significance to Cricket in England (an article that is not listed as vital I should note). I'd be in favor of purging all American college football/sports from the lists completely, they aren't really vital, dispite what some fandoms might think. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 01:11, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- While I agree that college sports is not that internationally important, if we were to list one college based on its sports team, IMO it would be Alabama. College sports may not be popular overseas, but it is very popular in the United States. QuicoleJR (talk) 11:51, 29 October 2024 (UTC)

- FYI, it is standard to use the vital template when proposing removals, like this "Remove University of Florida 5" but even more important than that you really should give a reasoning for removal. The Blue Rider 16:15, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry for missing that, I'll remember the format in the future. The reason for removal is at the top, and applies evenly to all of the Universities I proposed removing. Essentially, the haphazard inclusion of schools we have either requires us to include MANY more, or remove a lot of them. For example, looking at the List of research universities in the United States, we don't have all the R1s, but include California State University, which although large, consists of R2 schools. We have several schools listed that are neither R1 or R2. No school I've worked at or gone to is on the Vital list, but they are all R1 or R2 universities that could subjectively be included like most of the ones we do have. To avoid expanding the list to all R1 and R2 schools, I think trimming dramatically is easier. The University of Florida is big, but so are the flagship universities of many states that are not, and should not be (in my opinion), included on the list. - The issue is the section is quite bloated. These are the American Universities that I think we could trim, and the list is exclusive to American Universities. Going through and posting them one at a time could take months without addressing the problem of over a decade of bloat, and editors will come in and out over that time making it hard to actually maintain engagement (myself included, I would lose interest in this long before I'd get around to posting one University at a time). This seems like a good way to sort through many at once. At least that's my hope. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 21:43, 28 October 2024 (UTC)

The character set used to write the Korean language 4 before being replaced by Hangul 4. As a result, knowledge of hanja is necessary to understand historical Korean texts. Compare, for example, the need to understand Traditional Chinese characters 5 to read older Chinese texts.
As a character set that has been superseded, hanja is perhaps less important than other character sets derived from Chinese characters which remain in modern usage, such as Kanji 5 or Traditional Chinese characters 5. However, considering that Classical Chinese 4 is at level 4, the classical Korean character set should still be appropriate at this level.

Per above discussion, on the List of best-selling light novels, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has the most total approximate sales for the media listed, at 40 million combined sales for digital and physical media. This is a bit of an odd one, but I think it is important to add more media that is non-western to the list of vital articles.

- Judging this based on sales numbers rather than broad cultural relevance and legacy feels inappropriate for Vital. I don't know if any individual light novel series is a Vital article, but if I had to nominate one, it certainly wouldn't be this one. ~Cheers, TenTonParasol 03:48, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- Too recent a pop culture phenomenon, we already have Sword Art Online 5 which also is a better inclusion for starting the isekai anime fad. I wouldn't give too much weight to sale amounts; The Ginger Man 5 has supposedly sold 45+ million copies but has by now become so obscure I seriously question its vitality.--LaukkuTheGreit (Talk•Contribs) 13:42, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. While it's a high selling series, it hasn't had the same cultural impact of titles such as Dragon Ball or Naruto or even a huge impact on other titles like the light novel of Mushoku Tensei which is often credited with popularizing isekai in light novels/web novels. It'll likely be forgotten by most in a decade. DarkeruTomoe (talk) 00:01, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

- I think that if this and the previous nomination passes, we should consider a category for light novels in general. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 18:39, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
- @TenTonParasol I only recognized a few names on the list, and those franchises were either included, such as Sword Art Online under Anime, or were pretty far down the list. If you look through the various franchises we include, there are many western bits of media that I'd believe are less impactful then this light novel series. As it is one that has been translated into English with a fairly decent following outside Japan, and listed as the most sales of the genre overall, I thought it might be worth including. The qualitative "cultural relevance and legacy" seems a bit challenging to pin down, what metrics would you use to judge this? I was trying to avoid being overly subjective when trying to look for non-western media to include.GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 04:38, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- I think light novels qualify as a vital topic, but at the same time that doesn't mean that any particular light novel series qualifies as vital. I'm thinking of the example of Yuri and Boys' love, which are vital articles, but I don't think any particular yuri or BL works are. Erinius (talk) 14:52, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- While I understand your point regarding those genres, aren't light novels a publication format that is not limited to genre? I'd imagine this would make them a bit more broad then those specific genres. If this isn't included, I think that we can cut a lot of other franchises from the vital list.
- GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 15:01, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure anything in the 21st century fiction listing, which is where Reincarnated as a Slime would go is clearly less notable than it. Erinius (talk) 16:23, 30 October 2024 (UTC)
- My suggestion is a separate section for light novels as a medium, not to place it directly under 21st century fiction. A better comparison would then be the stuff in the Manga section, or under Children's and young adult books. If you look under 21st century fiction listings, there is a heavy western bias in the media we include. This is what I'm trying to address, and I'm trying to do it quantitatively by starting with the highest sales figure in the genre. GeogSage (⚔Chat?⚔) 18:39, 30 October 2024 (UTC)

This book from the 1600s has persisted to relevance to this day. To quote the books lede "many translations have been made, and it has garnered broad attention in East Asia and throughout the world. For instance, some foreign business leaders find its discussion of conflict to be relevant to their work. The modern-day Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū employs it as a manual of technique and philosophy."

This book from the 1650s is still relevant today. Subsequent editions were edited by Isaac Newton, and to quote the lede, "This influential text laid the foundations for modern geographical science and was pivotal in the development of geography as a scientific discipline. Geographer Fred Lukermann described Geographia Generalis as the division between medieval geography from modern geography." Full disclosure, I am the one who originated this article, but I think it is quite important.

Update categorization by college conference of US universities
editDue to changes in college athletic conferences (2021–2026 NCAA conference realignment), some articles in Educational institutions -> Americas -> United States need to be moved to new headings. The Pac-12 section should be emptied, with the pages relocated to other headers as follows:
- California Berkeley, Stanford -> ACC
- Arizona, Colorado Boulder -> Big 12
- UCLA, Oregon, Southern California, Washington -> Big Ten
Sammi Brie (she/her • t • c) 18:55, 2 November 2024 (UTC)
- If you believe the list would benefit updating the structure, I think you can just go ahead and do it. Unless they are big changes from the way it used to be, the issue doesn't need to opened for discussion. Only removing and adding articles needs to have 4 supporting votes on Level 5. Moving articles across sections and improving the headings can still be done boldly. Makkool (talk) 15:57, 12 November 2024 (UTC)

- Just want to point out that anime, manga, and light novels are not the same thing and should be broken up. For example, while Sword Art Online has an anime, it was originally a light novel series and could be moved into such a section. The equivalent would be cartoons, comic books, and young adult novels. The confusion seems to happen when one is based on another, like when a cartoon is based on a comic book. The genre Isekai isn't exclusive to a particular medium, and has quite a few franchises (several hundred), which you can see in the Category:Isekai, and includes movies like Spirited Away 5, and light novel series like Overlord (novel series) and Sword Art Online 5. Overlord and Sword Art Online were later adapted into Anime, which leads to confusion. This proposal would be under Genre, like Tokusatsu 5.

- I'm aware of that, but just because it was higher grossing doesn't indicate a larger cultural impact (especially if you take into account possible factors like inflation, nostalgia, etc.) Going off of Frozen (2013 film)#Legacy, everything that is there only discusses the films popularity from 2013-2015 and there is no indicator that it changed pop culture and/or the film industry, which is typically a stronger indicator for vitality than mere box-office success. And Frozen 2 didn't leave any cultural impact at all. So my point is that, yes, the height of the franchises popularity was in the mid-2010s, and no major cultural impact was left. λ NegativeMP1 18:34, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
