Identity theft

edit

Including code such as the following, {{birth based on age as of date|2x|200x|xx|xx}}<ref name="NY Times 20xx" /><ref name="xxxxx 20xx" />, which displays the year but includes the complete date of birth is no deterrent to anybody who can click on edit. I cannot stop you from making identity theft easier, but I would hope that your conscience would. — Robert Greer (talk) 16:11, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

You are misunderstanding how Template:Birth based on age as of date works. The first parameter is the age as listed in a publication, and the other three are the year, month, and day of the publication (NOT the date of birth). For example, if a newspaper article on February 15, 2010 listed a person's age as 30, then the template used is {{birth based on age as of date|30|2010|2|15}}. The output is an two-year range, such as: 1979/1980 (age 32–33). -- Zyxw (talk) 16:29, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

edit

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page, here or at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 14:19, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of FMCV

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on FMCV requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. MikeWazowski (talk) 21:09, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Edit to Location map USA

edit

Back in August you edited the template {{Location map USA}} and changed the value of {{{name}}} form "the USA" to "United States". The only time I am aware of that this value is used is when {{Location map+}} uses it to construct alt text which reads "<label> is located in <name>." Which in this case might result in "Chicago located in United States." So it seems to me that it would be best if it read "Chicago is location in the United States." So I am wondering if you had some reason to remove the "the". I'm wondering if you know of somewhere else that the name is used in was that makes the use of the "the" inappropriate. –droll [chat] 16:55, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

The value of {{{name}}} in {{Location map USA}} is used for default captions by the following templates:
{{Location map}} creates a default caption of label (name)

Chicago
Chicago (the United States)
{{Location map | USA
| lat = 41.881944
| long = -87.627778
| label = Chicago
}}
{{Location map+}} creates a default caption of PAGENAME (name):

Chicago
Zyxw/Archive 8 (the United States)
{{Location map+ | USA
| places =
  {{Location map~ | USA
  | lat = 41.881944
  | long = -87.627778
  | label = Chicago
  }}
}}
-- Zyxw (talk) 20:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Another example:

Chicago
Zyxw/Archive 8 (the United States)
{{Location map many | USA
| lat = 41.881944
| long = -87.627778
| label = Chicago
}}
Thanks for the work you've done to explain this. Your first example generates the alt text, "Chicago is located in United States," which is not good. I agree that the caption, "Chicago (the United States)," would not be good either. I never did think much of the default caption idea. The inconsistency in the captions generated in these three examples is definitely undesirable. I'm going to have to think on this some more. I'll probably get back to you and let you know if I come up with any ideas. –droll [chat] 22:22, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
{{Location map many}} fails to pass a parameter, {{{caption_undefined}}}. I don't know if that's by design or not. I'm going to check the 240 articles that use the template. Thanks again. –droll [chat] 22:54, 17 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
I fixed {{location map many}} so that the output agrees with that of {{location map}}. If you notice anything else we can discuss it at Template talk:Location map. –droll [chat] 02:35, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

In your recent update to the article on Morena Baccarin, you changed the format of the dates contrary to Wikipedia Manual of Style and my explicit previous edits, with no apparent reason. Please don't do that. 87.254.86.149 (talk) 18:13, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Based on your edit to Morena Baccarin on April 22, I presume what you are referring to is that in my edit on April 13, while adding information and a reference about Juilliard, I also changed the infobox parameter known_for from Since 2001 to 2001–present. If so, that change is consistent with the documentation for {{Infobox person}}, which states: Use the format 1950–2000, or 1970–present if still active; note the use of an en dash. -- Zyxw (talk) 23:20, 22 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of the details of the Naukiti airport, Alaska

edit

Hi. In May 2012, you removed the details I had just added about the Naukiti airport in Alaska, US: http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=List_of_airports_in_Alaska&diff=493303704&oldid=493068132. However, that airport is referenced by IATA, as you can check on their Web site or some third party sites like theAirDB or FlightStats. So, could you re-add the details for that airport, or point me to something I may have missed? -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 11:29, 22 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello. When viewing an aerial image for the coordinates provided at FlightStats (55°22′00″N 133°13′00″W / 55.36667°N 133.21666°W / 55.36667; -133.21666) I did not see a runway, so either those coordinates are incorrect or this is a former airport. However, since you provided a reference for the IATA code "NKI", I have restored Naukiti to the list of airports in Alaska. I did not restore the FAA identifier "NKI" since that does not exist and I could not find any current FAA identifier for this airport. -- Zyxw (talk) 17:57, 27 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reponse!
To be honest, I do not know where that IATA-referenced "airport" (it could be a sea plane base as well) is exactly located. From the historical data, which I keep from IATA, that airport is not a newly referenced one (e.g., it was already present in 2010 in the IATA reference lists). In the IATA non public lists, they give 55°51′52″N 133°11′32″W / 55.86444°N 133.19222°W / 55.86444; -133.19222 (Naukati Airport), which corresponds to Naukati Bay, Alaska and to a sea plane base I have therefore created on Geonames. TheAirDB also locates Naukiti airport at that place. That sounds consistent if Naukiti and Naukati are a single place. However, as you have already noticed, Google Maps locates Naukiti airport 55 kilometres (30 NM) kms in the South of Naukati Bay; but, from the corresponding details page on Google Map Maker, there seems to be no evidence that they are more savvy than IATA and, above all, there is no supporting evidence that that place would be named Naukiti...
To add to the confusion, there is still another IATA-referenced (IATA: WNC) sea plane base in the vicinity of Naukati Bay, namely Naukati Bay Seaplane Base (aka Nichin Cove sea plane base), also referenced by Geonames, TheAirDB and FlightStats.
From all that, I therefore believe that Naukiti "airport" is a sea plane base, located on the Naukati Bay island, and that Naukiti and Naukati correspond to the same place. -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 11:14, 29 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

AOP IATA code

edit

Hi. You just re-added the AOP IATA code to the Alférez FAP Alfredo Vladimir Sara Bauer Airport (see [1]). However, as seen on the IATA Web site, AOP designates the airports of Andoas instead. So, could you please remove the AOP IATA code from Alférez FAP Alfredo Vladimir Sara Bauer Airport? -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 00:48, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

The IATA website search results for airport code AOP give the city name as Andoas, but the airport name is not given:
City name 3-letter city code Airport name 3-letter airport code
Andoas AOP AOP
That should mean AOP is the IATA code for the airport serving Andoas, which is Alférez FAP Alfredo Vladimir Sara Bauer Airport (also known as Andoas Airport). So, unless you know of another airport serving Andoas, I believe that IATA code is correct.

NOTE: This is also the case with IATA search results for many airports. To illustrate, I have provided examples for three other airports in Peru:
City name 3-letter city code Airport name 3-letter airport code
Piura PIU PIU
The airport serving Piura is Cap. FAP Guillermo Concha Iberico International Airport (also known as Piura Airport)
City name 3-letter city code Airport name 3-letter airport code
Cajamarca CJA CJA
The airport serving Cajamarca is Mayor General FAP Armando Revoredo Iglesias Airport (also known as Cajamarca Airport)
City name 3-letter city code Airport name 3-letter airport code
Chimbote CHM CHM
The airport serving Chimbote is Tnte. FAP Jaime Montreuil Morales Airport (also known as Chimbote Airport)
-- Zyxw (talk) 02:30, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for that extensive research! I have checked on the OAG Web site, where they provide an airport look up widget (see also Where-Can-I-Fly-Direct and Which-Airlines-Fly-My-Route) and an exhaustive airport/city code book which may be browsed online. OAG provides the flight schedules and charters for all the airlines of the world (though, for charters, OAG lists are not exhaustive). While CJA/Cajamarca and PIU/Piura are appearing in the flight schedule tables of OAG, AOP/Andoas and CHM/Chimbote are not. As you stated, this simply means that those airports are exclusively used privately. So, there is no current need for IATA and OAG to reference them as airport, besides referencing them as metropolitan areas/cities. Personally, I would rather not state that AOP and CHM are airport codes, because the average traveler cannot find any travel means to fly from/to them (see, for instance, the Web site of LAN Perú). On the other side, I also understand that one can consider that those existing airports, since they are servicing (private) passengers, deserve to get the IATA code of the corresponding metropolitan area/city. So, I will leave it up to you :) -- Denis.arnaud (talk) 10:09, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

We noticed though that when you edited Tim Armstrong (executive), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page United Football League (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Mississippi County Airport

edit

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Mississippi County Airport, and it appears to include material copied directly from http://www.airports-worldwide.com/usa/mississippi/george_m_bryan_mississippi.php.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.

If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. I removed that bot-generated template from the article, since (1) the external link mentioned contains content copied from Wikipedia and (2) that copied content is from George M. Bryan Airport in Mississippi, while the article I created is for an different airport in Missouri. -- Zyxw (talk) 17:35, 22 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:LFLX logo.jpg)

edit

Thanks for uploading File:LFLX logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:02, 22 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
