editI put the image it under {{fairuse}}. However, I corrected the copyright. It is by both Reuters and Corbis, noting the Corbis watermark. However, it's the only photo I can get of the situation at Vancouver International Airport on September 11, 2001. -- SNIyer12(Sound off!) 2 Jul 2005, 23:21 (UTC)
- I know you want to use this photo, but due to the watermark that is present in the article, I had to place it at IFD. I have placed photos like that before, involving the Funeral of Canadian PM Treduea. And from what I was told before, watermarks mean a copyright violation and the watermark is distracting from the image itself. Sorry man, but it had to be done. Nasty accusations at Starfleet ranks FAC
editGood sir. Some rather nasty accusations were made against me over at the Starfleet FAC, in particular that in the past nominations I went through and deleted other people's objections without consent. Your support as a witness that this is a lie would be very much appreciated. We have one person who has waged nothing less than a campaign against the existence of the article. I think the only reason a VFD hasnt gone down yet is that the folks for it know the argument is weak and that such a vote would fail. They content themselves, then, to bash the article on the FAC nomination. How sad. I wonder if this has anything to do with who we are and what we stand for, i.e. USA authors one an Eagle Scout and the other a Naval Officer since, how interesting, but the ones who hate the article so much appear to be from other countries (China, Scandanavia, etc). I wouldnt dare post that offically, its just an observation Ive been making. -Husnock 3 July 2005 23:01 (UTC)

Brazil's flags
editI dont understand why should the Brazilian flags be deleted. They are a public symbols and I did the pictures by myself. Brazilian Constitution forbides the use of the flags in clothings or something else that is not fair. However, I dont see any trouble here. What do you think? Thank you. --Carlosar 6 July 2005 19:40 (UTC)
- My reasoning for deletion is not due to copyright violations, but that they were not being used in articles. There are better versions of the images on Wikipedia and they are used instead of the ones I have placed up for deletion. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 6 July 2005 19:44 (UTC)

editHey Zach,
I have re-opened the issue of the royal stub at [1]. I think having it produce a noble link is farcical. Those who did it originally were no doubt well meaning but I don't think they really understood what they were doing. Nobility and royalty are not the same. Your opinions would be welcomed.

Your Flags
editHey Zscout,
I'd like to thank you for making your wonderful flags. However, in case you didn't notice, there is a new rule for flags that use the template PD-Flag on the Wikimedia Commons (click here) which basically says that flags that we don't have permission for will eventually be deleted. Since you created the flags yourself, would you be able to release them into a free licence? (GFDL, Public Domain) Thanks. --Hottentot (By the way, please reply on my talk page)

editA nice little battle just occurred on Wikipedia:Disruptive User. Thought you'd be interested. I do more fighting here than in the Navy. -Husnock 05:07, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- I dropped a note at Grace's page, asking him about IP 210.84.240.148. The IP was signing notes under his name, and I want to be sure if this was kosher. Maybe, its just people trying to screw with yall, trying to show that disrupted user is pointless. But, if you all insist on something before an RFC, what you can do is probably pull off an intervention once a problem pops up. Check it out, talk to the users, and see what happens. If things do not go well, then try to seek out someone with power and try that. If not, then a RFC will do. RFC can be a disruptive user centre, since there is no threshold on when to start an RFC. All it does is just get users to comment about the behaviour. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 05:15, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- The proposal most likely wont go through and there were some good points made. My original intent was having some kind of panel before RFC. It was a good intention, but doesnt fit in well with the established system and it will be good when the policy proposal closes. It is a shame we had such nasty attacks from who-knows-who that was, but in a way it actually demonstrated what a Disruptive User can be yet without openly vandalizing pages. Thanks for your support with the proposal. -Husnock 05:20, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- If you want to show off what I suggested, fine with me. But I think some users can act on their own and try to stop it before the RFC, but nothing official could be put down because of the instruction creep mess. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 05:22, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

List of warez groups
editPlease see my comments regarding the List of warez groups article. The parent article, warez, was becoming too long and so this list was split off (see the history). With very few exceptions, all of the groups listed (even those with temporary redlinks) are notable; some have even survived VfD already. What really concerns me is that someone protected the article and then someone else posted it for deletion, barring anyone from making improvments or edits while its being cast aside. Something to think about... —RaD Man (talk) 04:00, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
- Because many people either were trying to spam for a group or do some crazy things to the article. That was why it was protected, in my view. If the article was not protected, the VFD tag would have been blanked on many occasions. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 04:06, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
LGen Dallaire's Portrait
editThanks for your contribution of LGen Romeo Dallaire's portrait. Please note that the image is NOT under Crown Copyright as you claim it to be. [2] indicates that "All artworks, photographs and other images used on this site are the property of the artist and/or photographer who have contributed them. No unauthorized reproduction, public exhibition or re-use is permitted.". Please obtain necessary copyleft by contacting directly the photographer Jean-Marc Carisse. Thanks, mu5ti/talk 16:33, July 17, 2005 (UTC)
- The website is run by the Canadian Council of Arts, which is part of the Canadian Government, thus, that is where the Crown Copyright comes in. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 17:27, 17 July 2005 (UTC)
- An honest question, then: Even if it is explicitly stated that "All artworks, photographs and other images used on this site are the property of the artist and/or photographer who have contributed them" on a Canadian Government site, the mere fact that these images are posted on that site subject them to Crown Copyright? Regards, mu5ti/talk 03:00, July 18, 2005 (UTC)
- To my knowledge, I think so. I put the photographer's name on the image page, and the source of the image, so I think is all what we had to do to use the Crown Copyright. But, if someone from the Wikilegal Department has issues with the image, I will happily revert or find something from the Canadian Senate, since Dallaire is a Senator. Plus, I had no clue that Dallaire was born a Dutch national. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 07:07, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

GNAA article
editIt appears that I am being reverted somewhat senselessly. However, in the interests of fair play I would like to ask whether you think my my additions to the article are relevant, neutral and informative. Am I being unreasonable to add this material? Chocolateboy has added very little the talk page, and appears to have "camped" on the article, and not let anyone else contribute to it. I would very much appreciate your feedback! - Ta bu shi da yu 11:43, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
- The sentence about the members is fair, since we have no idea if the GNAA is just composed of "gay niggers from the US." Some white dude from the UK could be in on it as well, so that had to be said. the ASCii sig is needed, since many GNAA attacks used the intro phrase "Are you gay?...." and the sig. The invisable text is needed too. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 15:54, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

editHi, I thought you'd like to know that, according to http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0555902/, Roberta Ray is played by Dulce María. Too bad there aren't any photos accompanying the page. John Barleycorn 08:22, July 20, 2005 (UTC)
- I got photos, mainly of her in short, pink hair. From what I could tell on Univision, she went back (I think) to the long, black hair with the orange and blonde tips. Thanks John. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 08:27, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
Russian tsarinas
editregarding the names of tsarinas of Russia: if from abroad, they changed their first name, such as Wilhelmina became Natalia Alexeievna, etc. Now, Wikipedia has certain rules that the so-called consort name is not to be used, because of several persons being e.g Empress Maria Fedorovna. And that a pre-marital name should be used. But I feel that it is acceptable to make a formulation "Natalia Alexeievna of Darmstadt" (the "of Darmstadt" being for disambiguation purposes) instead of using "Wilhelmina of Darmstadt". Now, I would like to know some of international opinion and from your page I thought that you are familiar with e.g Belarusian perspective. In other words, I am asking you to think whether from the perspective of encyclopedia-reader, (1) would it be acceptable to say "Natalia Alexeievna of Darmstadt" and (2) would that be better or worse than "Wilhelmina of Darmstadt". 62.78.105.68 08:57, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
- If you want to use the pre-marital name, go right ahead. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 15:44, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
- There's a rather complex policy discussion about the different name components going on; it's rather more complicated than the anon has made out. If you're interested, consider visiting this talk page and endorsing one of the options, or adding one of your own. (The anon's contributions there are under 217.140.193.123.) Thanks! Putin and Kraft's ring
editHi, unfortunately your paragraph was deleted, it was not me, but I did support that. In my opinion, after some review this incident is rather small with no lasting impact as compared to others. One could argue that Putin's KGB secrecy habits had shown when he acted abruptly on camera, or something, but still it is not a big political event. I hope you will understand. –Gnomz007(?) 21:25, 21 July 2005 (UTC)
- That's ok. I figured it was an event that could be noted, and if others want it gone, I will easily follow the crowd. Thanks for telling me though, but I am not really upset/worried/etc. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 21:27, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

Soviet orders
editHi there, Zscout370! I looked at the Soviet orders article and saw that there is no mentioning of the Order of Mother Heroine or Order of Maternal Glory (1st, 2nd, and 3rd class). Is it on purpose or you didn't know they existed? KNewman 04:08, July 24, 2005 (UTC)

Removal from Order of Canada
editHi, I made some clarifications on the Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Removal from the Order of Canada of why I suggested merge. The article for Removal from the Order of Canada should stay, the information regarding the circumstance of the individual removal from the order should go into their individual article such as David Ahenakew and Alan Eagleson. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused, HJKeats 00:58, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. Well, I wanted to document on when they were removed and what had to be done to get their insignia back. Their legal issues were mainly covered in their respective articles, but I had to mention something on why they were asked to be removed from the Order. edityour edits on the USS Thompson articles did not include any edit comments. since i watch both articles, i had to go and see what you actually did. it would save me time if you would just include text like "corrected image link". conversely, it doesn't take you much time to do this. kthx. hth. hand. xoxo, Avriette 06:04, July 25, 2005 (UTC)

editBoth users have now been blocked for 24 hours. They did the same on a number of pages. I've already had to protect one page. Neutrality has protected another. *sigh*. LP seems out of control at this stage. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 06:49, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

You might want to keep an eye out on Victoria of the United Kingdom and later pages on UK monarchs. A blocked user called User:Skyring had been bombarding the pages with sockpuppets to try to ignite edit wars on the pages. I've spent much of the last week blocking his sockpuppets and reverting his changes. They are simply attempts to see can be get rows going over styles. He has no more interest in styles than in anything else. He just wants to try to get Proteus, Jguk, Whig and others at each other's throats. To stop others jumping in and his stunts succeeding I've been reverting the changes. (He has a history of trying to provoke rows on Wikipedia, and of stalking users of people he wants to annoy. He was banned from Wikipedia for a month for his stalking of me. User:Petaholmes was another victim. He is also banned from some pages for a year.) To stop him it may be necessary to put the pages under short time protection. His ban (unless extended, and it should be for all his sockpuppetry) runs out at the end of the month so he might stop using sockpuppets then. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 06:58, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
- I thought the styles issues were taken care of, but it seems like this is one bad habit that refuses to die. The page is on my watch list now, and I wrote my piece. - but I see the users are trying to copy your signature style when trying to vote about that article.
Oh, I definately noticed. :) I commented on it somewhere on the page. I think Insertdisctwo (talk · contribs) is unquestionably playing the sock puppet game here. Meh, I'm sure the admin who closes the VFD can sort it all out. Func( t, c ) 02:05, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

Flag Images
editI am still trying to upload new images and trying to move images to the Flag of Country.png series. However, there are some templates preventing me. I will try to fix those templates to ones already established and, once I get my computer back, I am going to set up a FlagBot, where it can switch images for me. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 04:07, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
- What templates? Supposedly we'll have SVG uploads "soon", at which time we'll have to replace all the flags with "Flag of Country.svg" anyway. It might make sense to put off the massive replacement effort until then. (Of course, who knows how long "soon" takes.) dbenbenn | talk 13:01, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
- The template I was refering to was Template:Flag2. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 18:26, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
- Plus, as for SVG files, I still need to read up on it, but I do not have the software to make SVG files. However, if others want to take my PNG files and make them to SVG files, I have no problems with that. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 20:06, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

Canada Copyright
editI have a question for you. I want to nominate an article for Featured status, but I was wondering if photos under the Canada Crown Coypright status is acceptable? Thanks. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:32, 27 July 2005 (UTC)
- The Canadian Crown Copyright is borderline: it appears to prohibit commercial use, and it may or may not permit modification. It's still freer than "fair use", so if it's a choice between the two, the Crown Copyright image is better. Such images should still be used sparingly. The Canadian Heraldic Authority article is a good example of where Crown Copyright images can be used (although since it's the text description of a coat of arms that's definitive, not the visual representation, anyone could draw up a depiction of one of those coats of arms and release it under GFDL). --Carnildo 00:03, 28 July 2005 (UTC)

DrZoidberg block

- Not sure, but Zoidberg was blocked for not making any useful edits in 9 months, refused to break out of the Sandbox. He also "broke" the sandbox. Fonzie's socks have been blocked, but I am not sure if Fonzie should be blocked himself. But, after a while, someone will. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 00:31, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

Zach's is much longer (UA laws on Hero of UA), but I will do that too at its time. For the EE cooperation, I don't think creation of EE portal is justified, but at least a EE notice board would probably be a good idea. What do you guys think? Mendel photo deletions
editWhat's the deal with removing the Mendel photos from the genetics articles? I checked the photo copy right and it does not appear to be in violation of any wiki rules? David D. 08:20, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- The image that was use in the aritcles was a white image with the word "Ass Pus" in gold. The pictures of Mendel were never on the articles when I went there to revert. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 08:28, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- Strange because when you look back at the history the version before your edit is normal. In fact, that was the version I used to revert. You saw the "ass pus" error on those pages? David D. 08:44, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I did. The image was called Mendel.png, and it was speedy deleted because of the ass pus. But I think I knew what happened. The Mendel image was uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. However, the banned user uploaded a copy here, thus negating the real Mendel photo. It replaced it with the ass pus image, and because ass pus is related to the Pelican Shit vandal, I removed it on sight. But, thanks for catching my goof-up. Russian Fleet Admiral
editGood sir, how have you been. A User slapped a VFD tag on Fleet Admiral (Russia) citing a page written in Russia as an example. Your keep vote would greatly be apprecaited as you are a champion on this site of Russian related military articles. Thank you! -Husnock 16:07, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- I have been well. I am sorry Husnock, the guy who added it is right: there is no rank called the Fleet Admiral of the Russian Federation. I used my Russian knowledge and there was none. Maybe it is a conjectual rank created by the US, just like the 6 star rank. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:10, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- It looks that way. It just seems very strange Russia now has no 5 star naval rank. -Husnock 23:35, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- Maybe, since the Russian fleet has sunk (no pun intended) to low levels following the Soviet collapse, maybe they have no need for a rank like that. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:38, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- It looks that way. It just seems very strange Russia now has no 5 star naval rank. -Husnock 23:35, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
Good sir, I've done some more research and have rewritten the article. With all respect to the person who started the VFD (for his knowledge of Russian ranks is very substantial) I think this a conjectural rank that could be bestowed in times of war or national emrgency. I simply can't believe that there are currently no provisions in Russia to appoint a five star Admiral if and when the need arises. I am also left with the puzzling mystery of why there is an Army publication giving reference to the rank and pictures of the insignia available. With all the mysteries, I strongly feel the article needs to be kept. Your change back to keep would be certianly appreciated. -Husnock 18:52, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- P.S.- Article has been renamed Fleet Admiral of the Russian Federation. Fleet Admiral (Russia) is now an article about the four star position. -Husnock 18:54, 1 August 2005 (UTC)

- Good news, I also found a motive for these guys. See the article. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 07:55, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
Hey...
edit... no offense, but I've seen rolloffle in action, and I can most definitely say that his motives are not what is in that press release. That's very much tongue-in-cheek. Just thought I'd give you a head's up... - Ta bu shi da yu 08:01, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I am going by the press releases. If rolloffle would like to say something else, then he can email me. I already launched an email to those guys asking for information. However, we can have a section on "famous users/members" like rolloffle and also the groups they work like, like ANUS http://www.anus.com/. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 08:03, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
The stub template {{Can-stub}} has been nominated for deletion. While I did not create this template I do not want to see it deleted. I feel it is easier to use then {{Canada-stub}}. As you have worked on Canadian articles a bit I was wondering if you would like to join the discussion (and possibly vote to keep it). Thanks. --Mb1000 17:43, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- I can vote for a merge. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 22:03, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
But a merge will delete either {{Can-stub}} or {{Canada-stub}}. I think it's good to have choices!--Mb1000 23:50, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- But, it is just three more letters. I can spend a second or two typing more letters. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:51, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ya, but come on! Why not have the choice?--Mb1000 23:53, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- Even if this template was not up for deletion, it would have been redirected anyways. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:57, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
GNAA
editTa bu nominating it was a bit off, yes, but my main objection is with Brian and his responses to everyone making any comment whatsoever on the content of the article. I've no doubt Ta bu was trying to make a point. --Golbez 06:19, August 2, 2005 (UTC)
- Plus, I think Raul654, who runs the FA space anyways, should have monitored the objections. I want to work on the article and nominate it later, since I will add something about their press releases and their "famous" members. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 06:22, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
GNAA RfA objection
editI can imagine how hard it is to get actual names for GNAA founders and members- and I feel that if that information cannot be provided, the article should not reach feature status because it is lacking information. FA's should be comprehensive, and if the article isn't, than it shouldn't be an FA. I'm sorry, but that's the way I feel. --Scimitar parley 17:49, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
- Hey man, no need to apolgize. I am still going to add a bunch of stuff to the article, but I am just seeing what else I have missed in my additions to it. While real names for each user could be key, I think it will be a challenge to find. It will also be hard to see if those are the real names: if I can find a source, I will add it. If not, I will remove it for the sake of accuracy. You can go to the Perverted-Justice.com and see about a edit war based on adding real names to the article. US flag images: color discrepancy
editHi, Zscout370. I noticed that you recently swapped out the main image on the Flag of the United States for a newer version. Despite the fact that both are described as using PMS 193C for "red", the old image is clearly different from the new image. I know (or think, at least) that you've done a lot of work on the flags, so I figured you'd be the one to ask about this discrepancy. Are you sure the new one is correct? I know PNG colors can be a bit tricky, frustratingly. I've had to use pngcrush in the past to "fix" gamma problems. —HorsePunchKid→龜 06:40, 3 August 2005 (UTC)
- I will switch the image once I get the Internet set up at my home. My laptop will die in 2 hours. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 17:09, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Adminship
editAre you interested? I feel you have all the right qualities: civil editing technique, the willingness to remove vandalism, the ability to be tactful on controversial articles and Get Things Done, an excellent researcher and a great understanding of site policies.
It's a tough and often thankless job. But I know you'd be excellent. Interested? - Ta bu shi da yu 02:52, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

GNAA and RfA
editThanks for working so hard on the GNAA article. Personally, I'm surprised you guys were able to come up with as much as you did, and it's a bummer that it didn't make it. Hopefully you and others keep researching and find some more info on them, so that in a few months another nomination might go through. In any case, you've earned yet another superfluous support vote on your RfA =). --Spangineer (háblame) 11:21, August 4, 2005 (UTC)

- Yeah, you can also call it a peace offering too. I have no clue when the photo was taken, but it could have been in June of this year. Now, the flags are in my possession. Also, I am not sure if the Hong Kong authorities give their flags away at public events. If so, I have one of those flags sitting in my room too. It is 10x15 cm, the flag is made out of plastic. The flag is affixed by some sort of tape, but the hold on it is not strong. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 18:00, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- The dimension (10x15 cm) is perfectly correct, and you may take a look at here. -- Jerry Crimson Mann 18:10, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- I can also measure the other flags, but they could be the same size. I received a HK SAR flag, Macau SAR flag, PRC flag and a CPC flag. Also, if you wish to send the article to WP:FAC, I would start trying to find references to explicit information, such as the "Long Hair" situation with the flag. - In fact there's another quite interesting anecdote about HKSAR flag. The flag used in Olympic Game in Sydney, 2000 was misprinted: the petals looked bigger and fatter than the original design. Hero of Ukraine
editHi Zach, I've made a few more changes. I looked over the articles on the corresponding Soviet awards and wrote up a paragraph on them to provide a bit of background. The articles I read didn't seem to have any sources, so we should probably find something that verifies what I wrote. And if you think anything needs to be changed or emphasized or whatever, go ahead and fix it. You know the subject better than I. I also moved that table off to the side so that it looks like a normal image; I think it looks better and I hope you agree. --Spangineer (háblame) 18:43, August 4, 2005 (UTC)

Hero of Belarus
editI'm glad to hear it. If you happen to stumble across people that are less receptive, let me know, so I can join the chorus in asking them not to do it. On a completely unrelated note, I'm glad to see that you finally decided to accept Adminship. I've already supported, and as I imagined, you're getting tons of support — so much so that I actually got an edit conflict when I was casting my support vote! :) And the RfA is only half way through. You may just break the 100 support votes barrier! It's only fair, you earned all that support through a lot of hard work for the project! Redux 17:28, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- I just had so many people ask me to become admin. If I even have admins calling for my adminship, then I must be doing something right. Right now, I am at 69/0/0/0, so I could break that record. However, how many admins have four co-nominators? Not a single person, IIRC. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 17:33, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Unanimous support, although not that unusual, is also a great thing to have in a RfA — you have it, now that the humorous oppose vote has been stricken. Kudos! Redux 17:44, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Well, I got a few more days to see what happens. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 17:47, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- The only way you're getting any opposition votes is if vandals and/or trolls you have crossed find out about the RfA and decide to oppose you out of spite. But that usually happens early on in the RfA, so if you haven't been opposed by vandals and trolls this far in, you're likely to get a unanimous support. I cannot envision any "serious" opposition votes against you. Oh, and there's Boothy443...he usually likes to oppose RfAs that are a landslide in favor of the candidate, but if that's the only oppose vote you get, it will be a unanimous support in my book. ;) Redux 18:02, 7 August 2005 (UTC)
- Boothy is now a party of a FAC because of her behavior, so I guess he/she stopped, for now. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 18:04, 7 August 2005 (UTC)

- Most people just see me on one article then I go off and do something else. I also see you on the Barnstar pages. At the Hong Kong article, I just mainly uploaded photos my friend in Hong Kong took. At FAC, I send articles there a lot or I help fix articles that I can make great. At RfA, I was nominated last week, so I go there and see how I am doing. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 07:02, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Templates with section headers
editDon't forget to substitute templates with section headers (such as {{Welcome2}} and {{idw}}) when you use them on talk pages - it reduces server load, and prevents accidental blanking of the template. Alphax τεχ 13:10, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

styles
editGiven the endless debate/rows etc over styles I've been thinking as to what is the best way to come up with a consensus solution. Styles have to be in an article, but using them upfront is, I think, a mistake and highly controversial. I've designed a series of templates which I think might solve the problem. There are specific templates for UK monarchs, Austrian monarchs, popes, presidents, Scottish monarchs and HRHs. (I've protected them all, temporarily, because I want people to discuss them in principle rather than battle over content and design right now.) I've used a purple banner because it is a suitable royal colour and is also distinctive. They are eyecatching enough to keep some of the pro-styles people happy; one of their fears seemed to be that styles would be buried. But by not being used they are neutral enough to be factual without appearing to be promotional. I'd very much like your views. I'm going to put them on a couple of user pages and ask for a reaction. There needs to be a calm debate on them this time. FearÉIREANN \(caint) 02:48, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

hi, thanks for being willing to take my comments into account; although I'm afraid I'm even more pedantic than that :-) I did one reference quite fully as an example of exactly what I would like to see. Imagine that Lukashenko is replaced and his web site deleted; my reference will let you a) use the way back machine to see the old version and b) search google for the specific phrase and find it on his new web site (ex-president.org.by???) and c) understand what the comment was even if you can't find it anywhere.. It's a bit of work, but if you only get part way there it will really help.. BTW. I generally like the style of the article which seems quite balanced and am quite likely to support next time you nominate it depending on how I feel about my ignorance of the topic at the time. hi
editHi,
I must say I do like how the article on the Order of Canada has turned out, although I do think that getting Michelle Jean as the new Gov Gen is a political move by Martin. The article is much better served with the removal and eligability articles moved to their own pages.
Lately I have been working on the List of Canadian awards page adding Provincial medals and awards (Alberta now has a ceremonial medal that has a listing on the order of priority) although I think I might have gone overboard on listing some of them - I ment to just list stuff like the Ontario Medal of Good Citizenship which actually contains postnominals.
I've been in Trois-Pistoles Quebec for a month learning French ( and fracturing my elbow in the process :) - I must say that I think I understand the seperatists even less now. It was weird that I saw only one Canadian flag and it was on the post office ! I did get to go to the Quebec Parliament Building (no canadian flag in their either - although I did manage to ask a question about that in FRENCH) and saw the room where they give out the National Order of Quebec.
So you heard that Smokey Smith has died ?
Dowew 19:49, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I have heard the sad news that Smokey left us. Canada lost a great hero. I was working on the Michaelle Jean article, and I already noted there that Mme. Jean will be presented the following titles at her investure: CC, CMM, COM and CD. I, myself, have never been to Canada, but I knew many people that went there or live there now. It's neat that you saw the room where they give out the NOQ. Plus, it is not going overboard to list all of the Canadian decorations, since my pasl Husnock went in and put in all of the American decorations on here. However, articles about each one might be going overboard. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 19:55, 10 August 2005 (UTC)
Hero of Ukraine
editHi. Is there anything in the rules on featured articles about blocking votes? More specifically, can any single user veto a featured article candidate?
Also, I don't quite understand what User_talk:Markalexander100 wants. Many people find numbers and dates interesting per se. Besides, the rules do not require an article to be interesting, whatever it may mean. Sashazlv 03:23, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- His objection is borderling on non-actionable, as mean I cannot do anything about it. This was a problem I faced with other topics on Belarus, few will be interested in them. However, what is not interesting to him is interesting to many others. Plus, it is also a good "who's who" list of Ukrainians and very notable names show up on the list, like Viktor Klitscho. Plus, I have put everything in the artilce we can, and you found every single hero that has been awarded (including the false heroes) into a fork article, so the article is pretty much set. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:30, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
So, the question is who ultimately decides...
In fact, there are several articles related to Ukraine that have a potential to become featured. For instance, Verkhovna Rada, Kiev, and, for that matter, Ukraine itself. However, too few people can actually contribute. Too bad. Sashazlv 04:00, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- ArbCom member Raul654 decides on FA's. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 04:01, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
Maybe, a bit of PR could help, in general. What about other possibilities? Frankly, I think that Kiev has more of a potential than Hero of Ukraine. At least, it may have a much broader audience and is the article can hardly be "uninteresting". Sashazlv 04:17, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sure, a Peer Review of Kiev will help. Kiev is the capital city, and we can document a lot of Kiev, since that is where a majority of the events in the Orange Revolution took place. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 04:45, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

Re your rfa/Belarus flag
editHey, no problem with the support. You're right, you should have stood ages ago, but everyone needs to wait until they know they're ready. As to the Belarus flag, I'm pretty sure my local flag maker wouldn't actually make one, since there's virtually no call for Belarus flags here, but I shall ask. Grutness...wha? 06:08, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- I just mainly want to know the design (like I mentioned on your talk page). I am trying to get a Belarusian flag that is made correctly by law, but the US makers do a bad job at. I asked you since I know at least the ratio will be 1:2. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 06:11, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

editCongratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. - Congrats on your Adminship Zach! A landslide vote, as expected. Adminship is no rose garden though. The one time a used rollback on an edit by a registered user, and already three people have complained. Sometimes, the issue itself looses importance, as people might tend to focus on how an Admin might have screwed up in using the restricted tools. I recommend extra, extra care in using your new "powers". I'm sure you'll do great though. Congrats and good luck! Redux 16:11, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

SEWilco's countrystub proposal
editHi Zach. Please - if yyou're going to move stubs over to the new belarus stub category, DON't use SEWilco's new method! We still haven't been cleared for using metatemplates by the developers, and there's still no news that MW1.5 is any better than 1.4 for high-use templates. If countrystub is to be used on all country-related stubs, it will be on some 10,000 articles, slightly over the recommended 200-500. I firmly believe that this new template style is in danger of crippling Wikipedia, and don't want to sit idly by and watch it happen. so far, you're the only stub sorter who has added any comments in his scheme's favour, and I can't really understand why. Grutness...wha? 03:06, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- I am still trying to see if it works. Now, I am talking to SEWilco on IRC, and it sounds pretty complicated. However, if I can ignore him, I know how to make it work. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 03:08, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- Grutness, perhaps you should mention your issues in the Proposal. Also note that only one stub sorter has added comments against the proposal, so it is difficult to know if anyone agrees with anything. (SEWilco 04:20, 12 August 2005 (UTC))
- And, since we got new software, we could always give this another shot. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 04:22, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- Personally, I'd prefer to wait until we get the all-clear, rather than testing it and then finding out we've crashed Wikipedia. There are other reasons I think this template's not a good idea, as well (which I've passed on to SEWilco on his talk page). Grutness...wha? 14:22, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
I've unblocked him, because he pointed out in his talk page that he hadn't done anything prohibited under Wikipedia:Sock puppet policy. -- Curps 13:16, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- The reason why I blocked him is that he is trying to disrupt Wikipedia by running a contest asking people to find out who he is. Since, I have no idea if he was hardbanned or not, I went ahead and did the block. If he does something abusive or find out who he really is, could we block again? The Pope
editWhat is the point of this edit? User:Jtdirl has stated on his user page that he dislikes Pope Benedict. I cannot believe this person has any honest intention for without comment reverting my edit which is factually correct!! 83.109.163.222 23:16, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- Btw: I have worked on this article long before anyone else cared (i.e. since last year), and two times proposed it being given status as featured. I think reverting someone without reason and comment is not acceptable behaviour.
- However, even if he dislikes the Pope, adding information that Pope Leo was the most important German pope in the Middle Ages is POV pushing. And, with a lot of problems we had recently, I locked the page until we figure out what is going on. Now, just calm down. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 23:34, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
- It is a ridiculous claim that Leo IX was not the most significant German pope of the Middle Ages. I have never seen any church historian say otherwise. This is a well established fact. Wikipedia is no place for original research!

- The IP's have been blocked, plus, there had been edit warring. I will unprotect it tomorrow. Zscout370 (Sound Off) 02:57, 14 August 2005 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:HoB-FA-MP.png
editImage:HoB-FA-MP.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
