Thanks for the great edits and formatting. You've made the article look so much better. The first version, very close to what you saw, was rejected two days ago. Now it looks indisputable. Sam Perkins (talk) 11:57, 28 September 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- There is a new user preference for "Always enable safe mode". This setting will make pages load without including any on-wiki JavaScript or on-wiki stylesheet pages. It can be useful for debugging broken JavaScript gadgets. [1]
- Gadget definitions now have a new "contentModels" option. The option takes a list of page content models, like
wikitext
orcss
. Gadgets that use this option will only load on pages with the given content models.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 3 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 4 October. It will be on all wikis from 5 October (calendar).
Future changes
- The Vector 2022 skin will no longer use the custom styles and scripts of Vector legacy (2010). The change will be made later this year or in early 2024. See how to adjust the CSS and JS pages on your wiki. [2]

- An RfC is open regarding amending the paid-contribution disclosure policy to add the following text:
Any administrator soliciting clients for paid Wikipedia-related consulting or advising services not covered by other paid-contribution rules must disclose all clients on their userpage.
- Administrators can now choose to add the user's user page to their watchlist when changing the usergroups for a user. This works both via Special:UserRights and via the API. (T272294)
- The 2023 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process has concluded with the appointment of one new CheckUser.
- Self-nominations for the electoral commission for the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections opens on 2 October and closes on 8 October.
The hoax
Like most hoaxes, it's devious and it takes a bit of unravelling. So let's start at the easy end. Adoption of the Gregorian calendar was protected indefinitely on 15 December 2018. The protecting administrator (who has had his tool removed before) abused it by reverting, instead of protecting the article as he found it. The change he made was this:
While the civil administrations of eastern European countries adopted the Gregorian calendar in the 1910s or early 1920s, none of the national Eastern Orthodox Churches bar the Finnish Orthodox Church have recognised the Gregorian calendar for church or religious purposes
This changed the statement that the Finnish Orthodox Church uses the Gregorian calendar to a claim that it doesn't. This claim has been locked in for the last five years and it's a deliberate hoax. See [3] which notes:
An exception to this general rule is the Orthodox Church of Finland. Owing to the fact that it makes up less than 2 per cent of the population of a predominantly Lutheran country, it observes Easter according to the New Calendar for practical reasons.
Further evidence of an ulterior motive to these reverts may be seen at Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Humanities/2023 September 29#Royal Prerogative (UK) — Military Powers. The last two paragraphs were removed within minutes of posting, meaning no one had the opportunity to comment before the section was archived this morning. Best, 146.199.206.18 (talk) 09:29, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, so what you're saying is that Future Perfect at Sunrise was in a content dispute at that article and shouldn't have done the protection/protected the 'wrong' version? I'm not sure I agree; I've certainly protected articles at which I'd previously removed POV-pushing under the understanding that if I'm sure such an edit would be made by 'any reasonable admin', something as mild as a semi is unlikely to be a problem. Don't know that I'd have made it indef, but the additions by IPs had been going on for a while, the previous protection was two years and when it expired the problem started right back up, so at that point indef's really just a judgment call. FPaS had only ever edited that article three times. In each case it was indeed to remove similar content about the Finnish Orthodox church, but I'm still not sure that makes it a content dispute rather than a response to POV-pushing. And as far as I can tell, FPaS seems to think this may be a socking problem by a banned or blocked user. If you are not a blocked user, you should consider creating an account. And forgive me for appearing to assume bad faith, but if you are, you should stop evading.
- I'm not following what you're saying is evidence at the link to the Humanities desk archives...I don't even find FPaS on the page? I looked in the page history but on a quick skim none of their diffs seemed to be about that section. Can you give me a diff to the removal you're talking about?
- Actually this is probably what we should be discussing. FPaS, you removed with no edit summary an attempt by an IP to discuss this issue on the talk at the same time you were removing the content and protecting the page? Valereee (talk) 13:30, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 10 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 11 October. It will be on all wikis from 12 October (calendar).
- Starting on Wednesday, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link" (Swahili Wikipedia, Walloon Wikipedia, Waray Wikipedia, Wolof Wikipedia, Kalmyk Wikipedia, Xhosa Wikipedia, Mingrelian Wikipedia, Yiddish Wikipedia, Yoruba Wikipedia, Zhuang Wikipedia, Zeelandic Wikipedia, Min Nan Wikipedia, Zulu Wikipedia). This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [5]
- At some wikis, newcomers are suggested images from Commons to add to articles without any images. - Sorry for the nominations, but hopefully the discussion re: ethnic restaurants has been centralized. Also problematic: Category:Lists of ethnic restaurants, with entries like "Irish-themed" restaurants. I'd say "Irish-themed" is not an ethnicity. Another reason to categorize by cuisine, not ethnicity, IMO. Thanks for collaborating here. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:52, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Categories
Hello, Valereee,
Sorry to plaster your talk page with CSD C1 notices but the categories you created were emptied. There is an explanation on each article removed about a more suitable category for these pages so you might want to view them, most of the new categories are specific to a place, like Mexican restaurants in San Francisco or other ones like that. In the category world, placing articles in the most specific (but not overly narrow) category is preferred. Thank you and, again, sorry about the flurry of notifications. Liz Read! Talk! 19:24, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- I was thinking that some of these categories could become parent categories to those that are focused on ethnic restaurants in different regions but some of those already exist at Category:Ethnic restaurants (and Category:Southern restaurants already exists) so there would be some duplications. You could turn them into category redirects though if you use the correct code/template.
- The problem with categories is that since Wikipedia has been around for 22 years, if it seems like there is an obvious category tree that is missing, it probably has already been created under slightly different page titles. There aren't many new categories created that stay around for long unless they arise out of a CFD discussion, or it's an annual event like a new yearly sports tournament or a new annual beauty pageant or some country decides to change their name. If it seems like a good idea, someone has probably already had that realizeation before. There are occasional efforts to recategorize complete category hierarchies, like right now, there is an editor who is recategorizing most of the villages in Turkey to be designated "neighborhoods" instead, but that's a project he's been working on for months now and involves recategorizing hundreds if not thousands of different articles. Most folks are not that ambitious or if it's a plan that others disagree with, it's nipped in the bud fairly early.
- I hope you are having a good weekend, wherever you are. Here in the Northwest U.S., we had a solar eclipse but it's so overcast and cloudy, it didn't make much difference! Take care, Liz Read! Talk! 21:28, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

Since you were mentioned on the talk page, I am hoping you can assist with your admin tools as I don't want to mess anything up by doing a page move. There is a deletion discussion in the works for this page and the creator moved it to mainspace despite it being declined three times. They were given advice about participating in the discussion about their "move to draft" request and instead went to the Teahouse for advice. I think they misunderstood the advice they were given as they took it upon themself to move the page to draft despite it still being under discussion. Are you able to move this back for the remaining term of the discussion or does it matter? CNMall41 (talk) 02:52, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 October. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 November. It will be on all wikis from 2 November (calendar).
- Listings on category pages are sorted on each wiki for that language using a library. For a brief period on 2 November, changes to categories will not be sorted correctly for many languages. This is because the developers are upgrading to a new version of the library. They will then use a script to fix the existing categories. This will take a few hours or a few days depending on how big the wiki is. You can read more. [9][10]
- Starting November 1, the impact module (Special:Impact) will be upgraded by the Growth team. The new impact module shows newcomers more data regarding their impact on the wiki. It was tested by a few wikis during the last few months. [11]
Future changes
- There is a proposed plan for re-enabling the Graph Extension. You can help by reviewing this proposal and sharing what you think about it.
- The WMF is working on making it possible for administrators to edit MediaWiki configuration directly. This is similar to previous work on Special:EditGrowthConfig. A technical RfC is running until November 08, where you can provide feedback.
