Thornton Wilder page
editI changed the Thornton Wilder page on wikipedia to replace the offensive term "homosexual."
The English language didn’t have a word for people who are exclusively drawn to one sex or another until 1892, when the English translation of Richard Von Krafft-Ebing’s Psychopathia Sexualis appeared. It divided human beings into two populations, the heterosexual and the homosexual, the one normal, natural, benign, the other contingent, abnormal, unnatural, purveyors of evil, victims of an insidious and destructive psychopathology. Psychiatrists, criminologists, teachers, and journalists continued to talk about the dark, sinister “homosexual” psychopath for the next 70 years.
Meanwhile, in subcultures organized by people with exclusive same-sex desires and behaviors, the common term was “gay,” probably derived from prostitute slang of the 1890s. We don’t know how early it was used, but at least by 1932, when Noel Coward wrote the song “Mad About the Boy”: “He has a gay appeal that makes me feel there’s maybe something sad about the boy.”
In 1969, the Gay Liberation Front, and the subsequent Gay Rights Movement, made two significant changes. First, they believed that they were not psychotic, not abominations, not evil. They chanted “Gay is just as good as straight."
Second, the word “homosexual” had to go. It was old-fashioned and bigoted. It referred to a mental disorder. Besides, it had to do with who you have sex with, and they were about so much more than that. They were about living and working together, sharing a history and a destiny, being a community. They were not homosexuals, skulking in the darkness, seeking out anonymous liaisons in t-rooms. They were gay.
Regardless, “homosexual” was gone, and would remain out of favor among gay people for the next 40 year. In an Advocate poll in 2000, in answer to the question “What should we be called?”, 95% of respondents said gay or LGBT; 3% homosexual.
There are over 5000 gay or LGBT organizations in the United States, and no homosexual ones.
Barnes & Noble lists 3,389 books with “gay” in their titles and 305 with “homosexual,” most written to argue that “homosexuals” are bad, evil, and psychotic after all: The Homosexual Neurosis, Hope and Healing for the Homosexual, The Homosexual Agenda.
The American Psychological Association states that "gay" is the preferred term in its style manual.
Many gay people are offended by the term "homosexual."
Therefore it should not be used except in a direct quote. The proper terms are gay or same-sex.

- @68.115.110.100:. Don't think that this extensive detail of knowledge about the history between the terms homosexual and gay will change my mind. Even if it is offensive, it is still against Wikipedia guidelines, specifically WP:words. If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me again. editThe whole article has a tag that says needs citations. I don't see that as a good reason to delete new relevant content as you can look at other articles on wikipedia to verify the information I added. These cite many sources and can be found in just a few minutes as I did searching wikipedia.

editFirstly, thank you immensely for your efforts in finally assessing the articles on WP:CA. I was wondering if you would be willing to leave a comment on Talk:Sherbrooke including some suggestions to get the page up to B or even GA status. Obviously there are {{expand section}}s all over the place and a few {{citation needed}}s, as well, but those are allowed in B-Class. Thank you! - SweetNightmares 13:09, 12 August 2014 (UTC)

Jack Evans (D.C. politician)
editI updated several items. I now work at squire Patton Boggs. The firm merged. I do not have a nanny. Only three children live at home. The rest are at college. Much of the deleted information was added by my political opponents when I was running for mayor. It is either not accurate or incomplete. It is certainly out of date. Please delete it. I can be reached at 202 255 3300. I am jack Evans. The election is over. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Evansjack1 (talk • contribs) 19:56, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Evansjack1: someone posted a link to the article's Talk page to a new Loose Lips article about your activity on the Wikipedia article. I assume you posted your phone number so that anyone interested could call and verify that you really are Jack Evans. But Will Sommer writes that he called your office and they wouldn't provide that verification. —Largo Plazo (talk) 00:00, 16 August 2014 (UTC)
August 2014
editYour recent editing history at Jack Evans (D.C. politician) shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.
To avoid being blocked, instead of reverting please consider using the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection. —Largo Plazo (talk) 20:09, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Largoplazo: Sorry, it was my fault. I need to be more careful next time when using Huggle. I don't usually read the user who did it, just the edit summary and diff. I actually didn't know that it was the same user on the same page, just some user removing perfectly cited statements. I'll be more careful next time when patrolling with Huggle.TheQ Editor (Talk) 23:10, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
- In retrospect, no worries. It's that you were reverting without edit summaries, and I didn't notice the massive blanking going on. As it turned out, trouble was brewing. —Largo Plazo (talk) 00:03, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi. I've declined your speedy as it isn't nonsense. Actually, it's Albanian and I've retagged it A7 as an insignificant musician. True WP nonsense isn't common, and may be totally unpronounceable junk like 'uyttyhthggfgfffg' or pseudo-surreal stuff like 'goat the fifteen arc locatory juncture swig'. If unsure, drop some of it into Google or Google Translate. (In Google, you might even find sometimes it's a copyvio.) If you can't identify it (by looking at the national domains in the URLs Google finds), tag it {{translate}}, and list it at WP:PNT. If it comes up in Google Translate, you can look clever by tagging it A7 or something as appropriate, or tag it translate|Upper Slobodian (substitute actual language, with Capital(s) as appropriate) - and list it. After a bit you get to spot the different languages. Peridon (talk) 22:13, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Peridon: Oh, Thanks! I guess I still need plenty of practice. ΤheQ Editor Talk? 22:15, 15 August 2014 (UTC)
- Don't worry. CSD is complicated. It just happens to be my main work area, and PNT is somewhere I pop into frequently because I enjoy detective work and languages. I've got one and a half created articles to my name, and 38000 pages deleted in three and a bit years (not all through CSD, of course - there's quite a bit of housekeeping too.) I do pass some stuff over to a friend when it looks possible for rescuing, or when a second 'no, you've no chance' is needed. When I started tagging, I wasn't in NPP. I was checking Edits by Recent Accounts, and kept WP:CSD open to check what was what (until I learned them). I wasn't using Twinkle then - 12000 edits without any automation at all. Page Curation hadn't been invented (and I wish it hadn't been too). Don't be afraid to ask questions - if you don't get an answer from me, my talk page stalkers will give you a better one anyway... Recruitment Centre
editHey, I saw that you put your name down as a GA Recruiter. Have you received at least 15 articles? Based on your User Page you haven't. Reviewing at least 15 articles is a requirement to be a recruiter. Also, the Recruitment Centre is another "project" that I thought would work (so I invested quite a bit of time in it) but it didn't fly to well. For that reason, a decision was made between me and another user to put all recruitments on hold a temporarily "close" the Recruitment Centre. This means that even if you meet the 15 article limit, we ask you do not start recruiting anyone until a new system is put into place. Figureskatingfan said they would work on a new system but I don't know what the status on that is.--Dom497 (talk) 14:47, 16 August 2014 (UTC)

editHey TheQ, Could you explain to me how the Elimination Blitz's work. I just joined the guild today as you suggested and I also signed up for the blitz. Thanks, Mirror Freak 19:29, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- I've only been at the guild for only about a week. But what it basically is, is to clear the backlog at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests. I'm not very experienced at it, just starting now. I'm learning as I go too. I think you have to find an article to copy edit. You record how many words there are before the copy edit. After you finish the copy edit. The number of words at the start is your score. You should ask someone else more familiar with it. Cheers, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 20:57, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

You choose an article at the page, then you write down how much prose the article by installing the prosesize gadget, which you can learn how to do here. Hope I helped. Cheers! Hi TheQ,
I saw you declined my MEIJS Motorman page because it was not verifiable yet. I've added some external media links from official news sites, blogs and other kinda important people that wrote about it. The most important article, from the Volkskrant (our nation wide newspaper) is kept behind closed doors. So I've added a link to Designhaus that has a copy of it on his website. We're currently building the brand from the ground up, so there are not many recent articles. The MEIJS Motorman has been around for 3 years now and new articles will come in the near future, since we're building the retail for Germany as we speak.
I hope this is enough for you to submit this page to Wikipedia.

Your copy edit of Equilibrium (film)
editHi TheQ Editor. Please don't delete requests from the GOCE requests page without archiving them. Instead, just mark them as {{done}} and let a coordinator archive them. Also, I regret to say I have several concerns about your copy edit of that article, and have asked a coordinator to review it. Apart from the grammar error I noted on the request page, the changes ideology->ideas and consigned->assigned destroy the sense. That's just the first paragraph. Sorry, but ... --Stfg (talk) 17:17, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Stfg: That would actually be my first copy edit since I joined the project. Thanks for pointing them out, I went over my copy edit again and fixed some more issues. Thanks for all the advice. It will benefit my future copy edits. Cheers, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 17:35, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- Hi TheQ Editor; I've reviewed the changes you made and although some of your changes were good I'm not convinced your edits generally improved the article. I've thus restored the pre-c/e version. Please feel free to join the discussion here. Also, when you've finished a copy-edit you shouldn't just remove it from the page; please mark it with the {{Done}} template and someone will archive it. There's a very useful set of tutorials here; you should also find the Simplified Manual of Style useful.
- I also noticed you did your copy-edit in a single edit session, but it's usually better practice to break up the job into smaller chunks by working on single paragraphs or small sections, and adding an edit summary describing your changes. That makes life easier for the copy-editor and anyone reviewing your work, and you can more easily see any mistakes you've made. If you'd like some practise in copy-editing, the category Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit contains articles tagged for copy-editing; although it varies, these are usually lower-quality articles that need non-specific improvements.
- I'm sorry to be negative about your work, but as you say it's your first c/e for the Guild, so keep practising and building your copy-editing skills. I hope the above is useful to you. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 20:05, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Baffle gab1978: Oh well, thank you for the advice though. I made another c/e of Drums, Pennsylvania here. What do you think of it? Thanks, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 20:27, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- I think it's generally an improvement; you've added some appropriate wikilinks and expanded the lead. I don't want to sit here and give you a grammar lesson but here's a few observations:
- You shouldn't normally add "the" before proper nouns unless it's part of the name (Drums United Methodist Church).
- Beginning sentences with conjunctions (and, but etc) is generally considered poor grammar.
- "It was founded by the Drum family in the 1700s which originally named the town Drum's."—use "who" of "whom" after people and "which" after objects ("It was the flying bricks that hit me"; "It was Fred's family who threw the bricks that hit me"). In most cases use a comma before "which" but not before "that".
- You don't need to add spaces before section titles; the spaces in wiki markup aren't rendered in the article.
- If you're unsure of grammar, punctuation or spelling conventions on Wikipedia, you can check the Manual of Style, which is the standard—with some exceptions—to which articles should conform. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 21:38, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you @Baffle gab1978:! Your advice will help me with my future copy edits. By the way, the spaces before the section titles were generated by a script called AutoEd. Thanks, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 23:26, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

i want to know why my pictures are always being removed
editi am always asked to provide my what what to verify that i own the file i uploaded , so i dont knw how i can verify it because i used my phone camera to take my pictures
so how can i verify my pictures so they can not be deleted ?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Macgcandy (talk • contribs)
- @Macgcandy: It looks like the case you are referring to is File:MAC G CANDYS HOUSE.jpeg. It is going to be deleted because it does not have a fair use copyright tag. If you took it, you should upload it to Wikimedia Commons. But, if you upload it to there, you will agree to let anyone use the image and modify it. WikiCup 2014 August newsletter
editThe final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:
- Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
- Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
- Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
- Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
- 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
- Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
- Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.
We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.
There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.
There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! editArthur Dyson draft
I do not understand what it happening with my article concerning American architect Arthur Dyson. I asked what to do, and did what I was told. I cleared my sandbox out to make another article, and created the Dyson articles with the Articles for Creation process. I was told to wait for the backlog of articles being reviewed. Today my article is declined with some reference to "cut and paste" by "ArcAngel." Yes, I moved the copy from the sandbox when it was finished to make an article, which is what I thought you were supposed to do.
This article took me 4 months to write. Can you please tell me specifically what it is that makes it be declined. The information is as accurate and well referenced as it is possible to make it. I am waiting on the copyright clearances before I add the photos. Please help me here, as after such a hard and long effort to understand and work with the Wikipedia system, I seem to have just wasted a sincere effort to put up information in a scholarly way.
Thanks to you for your time. Bragdonite (talk) 02:37, 3 September 2014 (UTC)Bragdonite I have received your note. I do not understand. I have replaced the code for my article back into the sandbox page and resubmitted. That Draft article was created because the Wiki software prompted me to create the page when I clicked on Arthur Dyson's link in the organic architecture page. I did not know it was creating a separate page, nor is is clear in any way that the sandbox creates a stream of authority for a page. I would not have done what I was prompted to do by the software if I had understood what you relate in your email. I would appreciate it greatly if you could help me resolve this problem. There is a Draft page, and my sandbox. The correct text is both. How can this be resolved?
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bragdonite (talk • contribs) 18:21, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles - GA Cup
edit
WikiProject Good articles is holding a new competition, the GA Cup, from October 1, 2014 - March 28, 2015. The Cup will be based on reviewing Good article nominations; for each review, points will be awarded with bonuses for older nominations, longer articles and comprehensive reviews. All participants will start off in one group and the highest scoring participants will go through to the second round. At the moment six rounds are planned, but this may change based on participant numbers. Some of you may ask: what is the purpose for a competition of this type? Currently, there is a backlog of about 500 unreviewed Good article nominations, almost an all time high. It is our hope that we can decrease the backlog in a fun way, through friendly competition. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors! Sign-ups will be open until October 15, 2014 so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the four judges. Cheers from NickGibson3900, Dom497, TheQ Editor and Figureskatingfan. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:04, 15 September 2014 (UTC) To receive future GA Cup newsletter, please add your name to our mailing list.

Circular reference tag for Mississauga re-added
editI'm re-adding a circular reference tag to a reference that you provided for the claim that "[o]ver 60 of the Fortune 500 base their Global or Canadian Head Offices in Mississauga. Some of the strongest industries are pharmaceuticals, banking and finance, electronics and computers, transportation parts and equipment industries."
Not only did you add the reference without thoroughly reading the source, you removed the tag that I inserted without checking my edit summary for a reason, or rechecking your source to make sure that it wasn't circular.
Look at the bottom of the page of your source. It states "[a]ll information about Mississauga courtesy of Wikipedia."
Please see Wikipedia:Verifiability#Wikipedia and sources that mirror or use it and Template:Circular-ref if you have any questions about circular references and/or the circular reference tag. Sincerely, AntHerder (talk) 17:38, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

- Hi @PapaDoc88: and thank you for telling me of your concern. But next time, would you please add a header by clicking the new section button? I almost missed this comment. Sorry for replying late. I never said reference 4 is good. It obviously is missing a link. But what I meant was that I found a lot of secondary sources that talked about Alliance Global Group. Actually, I found tons. Although reference No.4 may be a fake link, there are other "good links". I'm just listing some random ones. There are probably way more.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

It is also my name and I am a female . Has it been misspelt ? Some years ago my passport / and other ID was subject to fraud . I am concerned as my facebook and hot mail was also hacked . If you would want to link to an actual site, I may be able to help you further. But what I can say that according to multiple reliable sources, Retna is his proper name. If he has a nickname or preferred name, you should write that down somewhere with citing your sources. According to Manual of Style, the article should reference to Retna by his common name. Hope this helps. If you have any questions, please notify me. Thanks, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 20:19, 24 September 2014 (UTC)

Time Out (album) tags
editHello. You recently tagged the article Time Out (album) with {{POV}} and {{peacock}}. Please would you start a discussion on the article's talk page pointing out your specific concerns? I am somewhat familiar with this article, having contributed to it, although I do not consider myself a major contributor. I don't see any obvious issues with neutrality or subjective wording, so if you see those issues, it would be helpful if you could provide more information. One thought: the version you tagged had just been vandalized; I don't suppose that had any influence over how you perceived this article? Thanks. – Wdchk (talk) 00:01, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
- @Wdchk: Self-trout No need to start a discussion on the talk page. I didn't notice the page was "edited in a harmful way" when I put the tag. I just did a basic skim through it and spotted plenty NPOV components such as "Boy, was he wrong" "Can't they just play in 4/4?" and some more. Thank you for letting me know. I'll remove that right away. Thanks, ΤheQ Editor Talk? 01:34, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
- Understood – thanks for removing the tags. – Wdchk (talk) 04:11, 25 September 2014 (UTC)
