Fan editor research interview

Hi TheDoctorWho! I don't believe we've met before, but I'm Gen. Quon and I'm an editor who works largely on articles about TV shows. I'm currently working on my PhD dissertation in library science about the information behaviors of fan editors (here's a more detailed overview of my project, if you'd like to read more about it), and I've been messaging Wikipedia editors to see if they might be willing to share their experiences with me. Given your interest in DW, I was wondering if you'd be interested in chatting with me about your information experiences here on Wikipedia? The questions I'm asking will be stuff like "where do you get your info", "how do you know if it's legit, so to speak", etc. I'm more than happy to send over additional details through Wikipedia's email tool, if you'd like. Thanks!!--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 17:29, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

Just a heads up, but I sent an email the other day about this. Thanks!--Gen. Quon[Talk](I'm studying Wikipedia!) 14:55, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  •   Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
  •   AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
  •   Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
  •   GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
  •   Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
  •   SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
  •   Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  1.   Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
  2.   AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
  3.   Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
  4.   Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
  5.   Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
  6.   Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
  7.   Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

The rules for featured and good article reviews require the review to be of sufficient length; brief quick fails and very short reviews will generally not be awarded points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. As we enter the third round, any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed now, and anything you forgot to claim in round 2 cannot! Remember too, that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello TheDoctorWho,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 805 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 852 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello TheDoctorWho,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here.   Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 11769 articles, as of 08:00, 9 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  •   BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
  •   Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
  •   Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Big Brother 24 (American season)

I put in a request for page protection a little while ago, but they are sometimes slow to respond. I don’t think the 3RR applies to reverting vandalism; otherwise, I’m in trouble. 😂 Bgsu98 (talk) 20:18, 14 July 2022 (UTC)

Hopefully the request gets answered soon, the season articles usually end up getting protected a few times throughout their runs. Obvious vandalism is an exception, and depending on who's looking at it it may fall under the BLP exemption (since the article can be classified as BLPO, and the claim involves a person directly). At least we only have a few hours til we'll be able to say for sure 😂. TheDoctorWho (talk) 20:25, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
They’ve locked it now. I’ve been following these shenanigans on Twitter; I’m getting my popcorn ready for tonight. 😂 Bgsu98 (talk) 20:40, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
Glad they protected it. Same, watching new drama unfold nightly has definitely kept me on my toes. Even though you can't officially add it here for obvious reasons, https://www,twitter.com/hamsterwatch has been one of the most reliable for me if you ever need quick information. TheDoctorWho (talk) 01:01, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh yeah, I follow them. Hilarious that certain “media” outlets quoted her when she said outright that she was just speculating. 😂 Bgsu98 (talk) 01:04, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
Well that was.... interesting. Truly surprised they decided to cancel the eviction/backstage twist rather than proceed and either have a battle back later in the season, cancel one of the two double evictions they had to have last season, or reduce the triple they did the season before to just one double. Anyways, I'm finding it interesting that reliable sources are even struggling with this, TV Line states that Paloma was "removed" from the house while Variety stuck with the "exits" for "personal reasons." Wouldn't be surprised if we struggle with people attempting to switch it to one or the other down the road. TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:23, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
That's already been happening. I posted a message on the Talk Page. Until we know for sure, I would advise just leaving it at a neutral "exited", which covers both scenarios. And yeah, I fully expected an eviction as well. Plus Jasmine's fall which delayed the competition; I was sure they were going to run over into the next hour. Bgsu98 (talk) 02:29, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

I’ve reported that person to the ANI board. I’m more familiar with it than with the 3RR board, and they’d only reverted twice when I made the report. Now they’ve done it four times. 🙄 Bgsu98 (talk) 05:26, 22 July 2022 (UTC)

At this point, the 3RR board would be more proper, hopefully an Admin gets to addressing it soon. TheDoctorWho (talk) 05:36, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
Usually, they're johnny-on-the-spot with these reports, but so far, nobody has even so much as responded to it. Bgsu98 (talk) 01:29, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm surprised no one has responded to it either, seems pretty clear cut to me (violation of BRD, STATUSQUO, and 3RR), but maybe that's why I'm not an admin lol. TheDoctorWho (talk) 01:49, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
If you want to make the report to the 3RR forum, you can. I did my part. Bgsu98 (talk) 01:52, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

It looks like Siesta Key is an island and is part of Sarasota, so it’s like arguing the difference between Staten Island v. New York City. They’re both correct, but I say go with what the CBS website states. Bgsu98 (talk) 20:26, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

I agreed initially, but I am starting to second guess myself slightly. Probably should've checked this sooner, but Big Brother Network, US Weekly (the source cited in the article), Parade, TVLine, Variety, and E! all say Sarasota rather than Siesta Key. And those are all just from the first page of a Google search. Paramount Press Express (CBS' press release) also says the same. My ONLY hesitation is that only "a portion of it lies within the city boundary of Sarasota", so it's possible that she is from Siesta Key without being from Sarasota (i.e. In early interviews she stated she was from Siesta Key, someone from CBS/Viacom/Paramount assumed it was from the portion that lies within Sarasota, but it wasn't. She clarified and they updated it on the CBS website, but not anywhere else since they don't have control over the content of other websites.) Could definitely be part of a wider discussion on the articles talk page, but personally I'm not [currently] invested enough to start the discussion. TheDoctorWho (talk) 03:19, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
I added a note to the table earlier; it's always something to revisit in the future should Alyssa ever clarify it. Bgsu98 (talk) 03:22, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Big Brother 17 (American season)

Let me tell you... that voting table was awful... Bgsu98 (talk) 06:25, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

It looks like it, as much as it needed done I honestly don't think I'd have the motivation to do what you've done (although I did go through and create episode tables for all the seasons so, hard to say) Either way, you're amazing for all the work you've done! TheDoctorWho (talk) 06:33, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
And I just had to revert edits on about 10 pages from someone inserting the <small> font back into the tables... 😒 Bgsu98 (talk) 18:53, 20 July 2022 (UTC)
Yeah... a lot of time I think people assume its okay because it's been used in the past, or think it looks better, regardless of accessibility rules. TheDoctorWho (talk) 00:25, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
Aside from the accessibility issue, it just doesn’t look better. It’s so small as to be difficult to read. Bgsu98 (talk) 00:41, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
Oh, I agree with that, just trying to justify from their PoV (point of view, not power of veto  ) even if I don't see the same. TheDoctorWho (talk) 01:26, 21 July 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello TheDoctorWho,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.

New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Big Brother 24 (American season)

I wasn’t paying close enough attention, but tonight’s episode included a number of flashbacks to previous episodes, with the days identified on screen, if you want to add those to the episode descriptions. Bgsu98 (talk) 01:05, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

I don't think I took note of them during the airing, but I do have Paramount+, so I'll go back and skim the episode for those once its up if no one else does it. I believe that Episode 17 had two flashbacks too that I've been meaning to grab as well. Thanks for letting me know!   TheDoctorWho (talk) 01:36, 1 September 2022 (UTC)

Chicago P.D & Sourcing

Hi,

I was not required to add a source for the information on the casting as I was not the one to initially claim it and write it into the article. When adding details such as casting on shows, seasons or episodes that are yet to air, its best practice to add a source yourself, in order to avoid edit wars and reverts that happened in this instance. WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Private Practice (season 1)

Hello again. Apologies for the random message. I just wanted to thank you for the edit to Private Practice (season 1). I might go back to the list to revise it for a potential GAN/FAC, but I am planning on take a break from television projects so I do not have any plans for that in the near future at least. With that being said, if you decide to work on it anytime, feel free to reach out to me if you ever need help with it in any way. Apologies if I had already reached out to about this, but I just wanted to clarify it with you. Best of luck with everything and have a great weekend! Aoba47 (talk) 01:26, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, hope you're doing well! I don't think we've spoken about it since the initial conversation on your talk page, but thank you for the update. I definitely do intend to get back to it eventually, I had a new class start the day after I made that initial edit and later got sidetracked with the On Patrol: Live article. I've got about six articles I'm hoping to get to GAN in the near future and two to FAC (including the Private Practice article), think I get my head screwed on too big sometimes (I blame the ADHD). That said, not sure when it'll be, but it is somewhere on my to-do list. If there's anything I can ever help with on any of your projects, including any needed FAC reviews, the same goes, just let me know. Have a great night!   TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:38, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for the kind words! I am trying my best. I completely understand what you mean by having a lot of projects on your plate. I overwhelm myself way too often with a bunch of ideas on what to do next, and it is something that I have been actively working on improving. I get sidetracked all the time lol. I hope classes are going well. It honestly feels like an entire lifetime ago since I was in a classroom, and as lame as this will sound, I really do miss the academic environment. I just love it. Aoba47 (talk) 04:19, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
I'm glad someone else can relate  . Just finished up the OPL article actually, one less project to worry about. Between school and my numerous projects here, it sometimes feels like I've got so much to do with so little time. Other than the occasional stress, classes are great, photography is a passion of mine so it's nice to get to explore that professionally. I definitely agree though, college is absolutely full of positive vibes, and is something that I will miss. TheDoctorWho (talk) 05:59, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
I am glad that things are going well with college. Best of luck with your classes and photography. That sounds really awesome. I would encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities that college provides as that is my major regret from that time period. I think if you do that graduating and moving on would feel more fulfilling, but then again, this is just completely unsolicited and very cliché advice lol. Aoba47 (talk) 23:36, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

Bradley Walsh in The Power of the Doctor

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Hi TheDoctorWho

Regarding your revert of my edit on the draft, I would like say Walsh's involvement is not confirmed or been hinted at. The BBC has not confirmed it, and the BBC is the only primary source on the matter. Therefore any secondary source e.g. SFX is not reliable as their primary source cannot possibly be the BBC. My reference to a photo of Walsh on set (specifically being seen with John Bishop buying a coffee in Cardiff) is that several (unreliable) sources have used that to say Walsh is appearing in the special, and as SFX gave no indication of what their primary source is, I suggested it might be that or other unconfirmed rumours that he is appearing. As there is no indication that Walsh is appearing, I removed him, in contrast to Briggs, where I did a WP:IAR because he is likely appearing as the characters he voiced previously are confirmed to appear so there's a strong albeit uncertain indication he's appearing. I would also like to ask what the essay WP:VNT has to do with this? Thank you --TedEdwards 21:19, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

Hello, I've self-reverted my edit for now. I always call on others to take part in WP:BRD and I should do the same, sorry for not discussing first. I have seen the photo of Walsh with Bishop and the numerous rumors surrounding that, including sources (some reliable) that base their claim around that photo. I personally felt this source was different because even if it didn't explain where they sourced their claim, it was not stated that it was "suspected" or "rumored" from the photo in question. It is likely Briggs will be voicing the characters, but to me it would still just be as much CRYSTALBALL as Walsh is/isn't. Likely isn't solid and the BBC have yet to verify an appearance for him either (anyone can pick up a voice modulator and record content). On top of that, with it remaining in the draftspace until the air date it didn't seem like there was much reason to remove it. Apologies for pointing towards WP:VNT, I had that in mind after this discussion about the 60th anniversary specials while I was typing. TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:48, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
Regarding BRD and VNT, it's absolutely problem and thanks for the apology. Regarding Walsh's appearance, I may have been over-zealous in saying the BBC is the only primary source, hypothetical third-parties may offer evidence for Walsh's appearence e.g. a leak, or a photo of Walsh in front of the camera. However, I don't think being seen in Cardiff with another star only near the filming site really cuts the mustard in terms of proof. As for Briggs, I note I did a WP:Ignore all rules, as I believe Briggs will almost certainly voice Daleks and Cybermen because a) he has voiced the Daleks and Cybermen since 2005 and b) both those aliens are confirmed to appear in the episode, so I believe adding his name to the draft improves it, despite what I did being original research (specifically WP:Synthesis). It also was an attempt to end what-could-have-turned-into-an-edit-war between Panda815 and Alex 21, by finding what I thought was a reasonable compromise (i.e. adding Briggs with a caveat), as I agreed with both their edit summaries. Note I would not have done this if this was a mainspace article. I would also like to mention that Radio Times, as you probably know, has been used extensively as a source for cast members before the episode airs. Looking at their listings it appears that they will publish the cast list for The Power of the Doctor this Friday (October 14), and hopefully that will confirm Briggs will appear, and maybe shed light on whether Walsh will as well (unless the BBC is keeping his involvement a secret). --TedEdwards 19:21, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Also is it OK if I copy and paste this discussion over to Draft talk:The Power of the Doctor, so other editors are more likely to find and contribute to this discussion? --TedEdwards 19:21, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
It's possible the RT listing will confirm it, and if not the BBC episode listing usually also has a cast list that ultimately confirm or deny the appearance. I suppose the argument could also be made in reverse; if he does appear and we don't have a source until the episode airs no one is missing out on the information, because it still is in the draftspace. It's fine with me if you copy this discussion over, it's probably better over there anyways so anyone considering adding Walsh can read through the discussion. TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:18, 13 October 2022 (UTC)
The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Copied and pasted the discussion and linked you (so you should get a notification). About my last message, I'm sure you knew what I meant but for the avoidance of any doubt, when I said Regarding BRD and VNT, it's absolutely problem, I did mean it's absolutely NO problem.
By the way that's a really good photo on your user page, well done for managing to capture that. --TedEdwards 19:16, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
I assumed that's what you meant, but thank you for clarifying. And thank you for the compliment on my photo! I actually haven't liked that one as much ever since I started studying photography professionally (that photo was about a year and a half before I took my first photography class in college) so it's nice to hear something good about it!   TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:44, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello TheDoctorWho,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

WikiCup 2022 November newsletter

The 2022 WikiCup has drawn to a close with the final round going down to the wire. The 2022 champion is

  •   Lee Vilenski (1752 points), who won in 2020 and was runner up in both 2019 and last year. In the final round he achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on cue sports. He was closely followed by
  •   Bloom6132 (1732), who specialised in "In the news" items and DYKs, and who has reached the final round of the Cup for the past three years. Next was
  •   BennyOnTheLoose (1238), another cue sports enthusiast, also interested in songs, followed by
  •   Muboshgu (1082), an "In the news" contributor, a seasoned contestant who first took part in the Cup ten years ago. Other finalists were
  •   Sammi Brie (930), who scored with a featured article, good articles and DYKs on TV and radio stations,
  •   Kavyansh.Singh (370), who created various articles on famous Americans, including an FA on Louis H. Bean, famed for his prediction of election outcomes. Next was
  •   PCN02WPS (292), who scored with good articles and DYKs on sporting and other topics and
  •   Z1720 (25) who had DYKs on various topics including historic Canadians.

During the WikiCup, contestants achieved 37 featured articles, 349 good articles, 360 featured article reviews, 683 good article reviews and 480 In the news items, so Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors. • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget.
