Great minds and all

Dudeman has pointed out to me that both you and I have offered to take over NationalRegisterBot. I opened a discussion on the subject with the bot gods here. I'm wondering if it would be a Good Thing to have it have more than one (at least somewhat) active operator. I'm agnostic on the subject of who runs it, but think that it should be run by Somebody, and am willing (unlike this user) to step in. Magic♪piano 19:58, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Colusa Illinois

Sorry, I was just trying to make the entry reflect what Colusa is like and was like. Fill out the history. I don't know what you mean by constructive, it was just meant to give a little bit more information about the place. Like, if you wanted a dog, maybe you would know where you might look if you lived around there (although they sell/procure nation wide), or wanted to go to a small town little church, or if you wondered about what was available there now, or what it had had available before shrinking. When my great grandparents were there it had a train station, a couple of barber shops, dry goods store, all sorts of stuff. Sorry, I guess I just figured that was what Wikipedia was for, to give people information about places. Of course, I don't know if you meant you undid the whole thing, or just a bit of it, re what's actually in/was in the town.

Bad Seed Rising

Hello, I was going to create an article for Bad Seed Rising, a band that had their song in Melissa McCarthy's "Spy" movie, among other things. I see you deleted a previous incarnation of that page for "not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject". WP:BOTR#Copy_coordinates_from_lists_to_articles; I'll run it by WT:NRHP if someone thinks they can help, but I'm not bothering with a project discussion unless I know that someone is willing to try, since it would be annoying to have project approval and then find that nobody's interested in helping. Guideline and policy news

• A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
• Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
• Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.

Technical news

• When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
• Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
• The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

• The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.

• JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

Arizona-Maryland-Delaware

Hi-I notice in your census-designated places section from Arizona that there are many blue links; however, I am reluctant to removed many of the blue links because info boxes are needed and also the Arizona state templates. Also are you still planning to merge the Reliance, Delaware and Reliance, Maryland articles. The reason I am bringing this to your attention is that between February 17 and February 21, 2017, the GNIS will be out of service because of maintenance. Hi-there was a redirect for McCook, Texas involving a radio station KCAS, in Hidalgo County, Texas GNIS-1341163; I look at the Texas Hometown Locator for Hidalgo County, Texas and there are many, many small communities in the cities section of the Texas Hometown Locator for Hidalgo County. McCook has an entry in the Handbook of Texas, so it's definitely a real place worth having an article about; I'll start one. No idea why it got redirected to a radio station, though the editor who created that redirect was recently banned for long-term content issues, so it was probably never a good redirect. (For what it's worth, I assume most of the many communities in Hidalgo County are colonias, which Texas border counties usually have a lot of.) Salem Lakes, Wisconsin

Hi-in February 2017, the village of Salem Lakes, Wisconsin was formed from the town of Salem, Kenosha County, Wisconsin with its unincorporated communities. This will require some redirects/moves of several articles and a new info box-again many thanks-RFD (talk) 11:05, 15 March 2017 (UTC)

This one could be a pain to sort out. In addition to the merger of Salem and Silver Lake, right now the town of Salem includes two CDPs and three additional communities with post offices, and from the sources I found it seems like all of the constituent communities of Salem Lakes want to keep their own identities. This could be a case like Gary, West Virginia where we treat a group of places within an incorporated place almost like they're separate communities. It also doesn't help that the website for Salem Lakes isn't totally updated, so it's hard to find out exact details of how this will work. There are several Oak Grove, Florida communities: Oak Grove, Sumter County, Florida, Oak Grove, Hardee County, Florida, Oak Grove, Gulf County, Florida, Oak Grove, Escambia County, Florida, Oak Grove, Okaloosa County, Florida that I also started and they need info boxes also. There was an community named Oak Grove in Hillsborough County, Florida which I did not started because I was not sure if it was located in the city of Hillsborough, Florida. Help with Maritz, LLC article

Hello! On behalf of Maritz, LLC, I'm trying to update the company's Wikipedia article. I have been too, and it's been working fine for me. The trouble is, when I applied that change to Dudemanfellabra's version, it was no longer working fine (as far as I can tell, this is because the script was loading before the content of the page, which would have been affected by the thing I changed). I really don't know why the two seem to be acting differently, unless it has something to do with the multi-register script loader being moved, but they sure seemed to be. Gilman, Vermont/Nyttend's Zip Code List

Hi-I added information about the post office/zip code to the Gilman, Vermont article; the citation about the PO in the Gilman, Vermont article needs to be fix; okay on Nyttend's Zip Code List, there are several bluelinks in the New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont sections that were redirect to other articles. There were also one or two articles that need info boxes. I left the blue links and they need to be corrected. I fixed up the references in the Gilman article. As for the bluelinks in those other lists, the ones that are redirects should be left on there (since they're not actually articles yet); I'll let Nyttend decide what he wants to do about the ones without infoboxes, since it's his list. In New England and New York, it's common to redirect village names to towns, since that's the mode of thinking in the Northeast, but elsewhere separate communities should get separate articles; inappropriate redirects, e.g. redirecting "X, Pennsylvania" to "X Township, Y County, Pennsylvania", should stay on the list, since they're indeed not articles. The list is for tracking articles, not for tracking infoboxes; I don't see a reason to retain a link on the list if it goes to an article that lacks an infobox. Done, but this reminded me of something I've been thinking about for a bit. There doesn't seem to be much left at Galena based on Google Maps (though the forest makes it hard to tell), and when I checked to see if I could verify its existence (or lack thereof) with a more recent source, all I found was a ghost town forum that vaguely suggested it no longer existed (though it wasn't anywhere close to verifiable or reliable). I suspect there are a lot of places like this that once existed but haven't for some time, yet are still considered active populated places by the GNIS because nobody's checking this stuff. (Another example, also from Washington: I recently finished reading Blue Highways, and at one point the author mentions that the towns of Moonax and McCredie were marked on his map but no longer existed, and he was mocked by locals for looking for them. Despite being gone by 1978, both places are still in the GNIS as extant populated places, the former under the name Moona.)

I of course think we should still have articles on former places, and I have a low standard for what counts as an extant community, but I'm not sure we should be relying on a database that's 35 years old and wasn't necessarily up-to-date at the time to prove communities still exist. I think we should at least cite a more recent source to prove places still exist if we're going to say they're current communities and not former ones. Of course, that still leaves a lot of articles that only cite the GNIS which we'd probably want to do something about. @Royalbroil and Nyttend: I feel like I've had conversations about this with both of you before, so I'm pulling you in if you have anything more to say about it. I've said this to Ser Amantio di Nicolao somewhere, but I can't remember where, so I'll repeat myself instead of linking to it. I've become uncomfortable using the GNIS by itself as a source for communities, simply because they're sometimes out of date and sometimes misclassify places. For example, in the county where I grew up (half an hour away from my parents' house, if you're bicycling) is a rather average rail crossing that the GNIS classes as a populated place — it appears in no local maps and no local histories, and the local historical society is unaware of any place by that name and unaware of any community, any name, for the spot in question, so GNIS is wrong. Consider Mount Jefferson, Ohio, which is an error in the opposite direction; see discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mount Jefferson (Ohio). I also found this situation routinely when improving the coordinates of NR locations in Virginia; many plantations, especially the old ones in the Tidewater, are misclassified as populated places. See U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System: Lower Brandon for one that I photographed yesterday: it's just the main farmstead and a few outlying barns and hired men's houses, not an actual populated place. I'm in favor of articles (even semi-permanent substubs like Grassy Point, Ohio) for locations that are listed as populated places in narrative histories, and I'm in favor of using the GNIS to provide information in those articles, but I'm not in favor of using GNIS when we have absolutely no information about the place otherwise

@RFD: I'd say a state (or county) highway map is good, since those are at least fairly recent (usually) and tend to be double-checked against what's actually there once in a while. (You'll occasionally see some that seem to be getting their info straight from the GNIS, but those are less common.)

@Nyttend: Yeah, I've ran across those too, in both directions. I've never been sure how much of that is sloppiness and how much is an inherent issue in maintaining a database of that size, but regardless it makes me tend to trust most other reliable sources over the GNIS. I don't think the bar needs to be terribly high for what other sources are used, provided they're reliable - though I'd maybe even settle for a picture of the highway sign if there's nothing else accessible - but if there's nothing besides the GNIS to suggest a place exists it's probably not a great idea to start an article on it. (The only downside of that is it makes it hard to write about places halfway across the country in regions without accessible maps or local sources, but stuff like that can always be dealt with on a case-by-case basis anyway.) I don't remember having a conversation about prior communities with only GNIS as a source. I'm skeptical about an article using only the GNIS as a source. An example in an area that RFD & I are both familiar with - many "Unincorporated Communities" of Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin with the ending "Heights" and "Beach" are actually roads along Lake Winnebago. These "communities" are located along roads that parallel the shore of the lake. There's a sign with the "community" name. Most homes are summer homes owned by rich people from outside the area. I'd call them neighborhoods (at most) but not communities. I think photographs with a sign is sufficient as well as any highway map. Royalbroil 04:26, 9 May 2017 (UTC)

Somers, Wisconsin

Hi-one of the editors left a comment on my talk page about Somers, Wisconsin; the web page refers to Somers, Wisconsin as a village and a town. The editor thinks there should separate articles for the town and city of Somers, Wisconsin. Wisconsin municipalities can be confusing; in Douglas County there are 3 municipalities names Superior; city, village, and town. In Waukesha County the village of Pewaukee was formed out the town of Pewaukee while the rest of the town of Pewaukee was formed from the remainder of the town of Pewaukee. And there is Salem Lakes, Wisconsin formed from the town of Salem and the village of Silver Lake in Kenosha County. Re: above comment by RFD (who forgot to sign his name): The village of Somers was formed from the Town of Somers in 2015, with remnants of the town remaining as a town. The village needs its own article, separate from the one for the Town of Somers, but I can't start a new article, so I was just looking for some help in doing that. I think the simplest thing to do would be to start a new article Somers (town), Wisconsin, copy everything from Somers, Wisconsin to it, then delete the irrelevant content in each of the articles. I'd say the current town article should probably become the village article, if only because the bulk of the town is now the village; all that's left of the town seems to be small bits around the edges that I wouldn't be surprised if Kenosha annexes eventually. I don't have the time to do that right now (though I might tomorrow), but it looks like Somers (town), Wisconsin already exists as a redirect, so you should be able to turn that into an article if you want. Whad'ya call nis place?

Kindly forgive the vernacular :-)

What would you call the place located at 36°44′16″N 82°37′25″W? The USGS quad labels it as "Starnes [line break] Slant PO", and there's a GNIS entry for Slant Post Office, but while it's not (historical), I can't find any evidence (e.g. [3]) for a post office still existing there; even the Fort Blackmore post office down the road, abandoned with bars on its windows, shows up in a search for ZIP codes, but Slant/Starnes/Starnes Slant doesn't. A search for "Starnes" in Scott County finds six cemeteries and three other nearby locations, all near this location, but without finding any populated places; meanwhile, a search for "Slant" finds the post office, a (historical) school, and a church, but again no populated places. My DeLorme Virginia Atlas and Gazetteer calls it "Starnes Slant", and the little highway sign (basically right at the coordinates, just across the road), although illegible on Google Street View, says merely "Slant". I'm planning to upload a photo of the remains of the commercial district, taken two Thursdays ago (22 June), but I really don't know what to call the place. Nyttend (talk) 12:59, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

I can't find any evidence of a post office there either (the USPS Postmaster Finder has nothing for it in 242, which means it probably closed before 1986). VDOT calls it Slant on their map of Scott County. It definitely seems like they're all alternate names for the same place, and the GNIS just forgot to include it as a populated place. I'd go with VDOT's map and sign as the authoritative source here, since it's probably more recent and the USGS has odd choices for primary and alternate names sometimes. (I've seen places where the sign, every map I found, the post offices, and various local businesses all used one name but the GNIS said another name was the primary name for some reason.) Illinois recently

Have you been paying much of any attention to Illinois lately? Special:Contributions/TheCatalyst31 appears literally to be all over the map, and it looks like you're doing a lot of Pennsylvania in particular. (In theory I probably could have just finished Illinois first since I was actively working on it, but I started working on your ZIP code list five years earlier and it was bugging me that I hadn't finished it.) I'm more interested in doing the ones that aren't NR-listed in any sense, since they're less likely to get any coverage (otherwise I'd have sooner started on counties like Clark or Pope), especially if it's some ugly new courthouse (e.g. Saline or Williamson) that forces me to pay particular attention to previous courthouses. Nice work! What's interesting about the Illinois courthouses is that several of those are fairly old and probably NR-eligible, but aren't listed. Wisconsin is pretty aggressive about getting its courthouses listed, so most of the ones that aren't are newer buildings. (Though there are exceptions, like Richland County, a beautiful old building marred by a newer addition that tried and failed to match its style.) I have a book about Wisconsin's courthouses that I'm guessing is similar to your Illinois book, and when I finish some of my existing projects I'd like to write about more of those. Missing ref tool

Hey there, I recall a search we used to have here that allowed me to find articles with no refs. I tried the old link and nothing. Is there a tool we have to find missing refs for wv and ky articles? I assume that building was designed well before World War II. There can't be too many buildings like that left these days; I imagine most places that incorporated the design remodeled after the war, but if that one's been abandoned for a while I can see why they wouldn't have bothered. Kate Galt Zaneis

Happy to oblige. :-) She falls under one of my own rather peculiar rubrics - encyclopedia entries that start with Q, X, or Z - and is an Oklahoman (long story as to why that was germane at the time.) I agree that I was quite surprised that no one had written her up yet. More to the point, I was surprised at how obscure she seems to be, given her achievement; a quick Google search revealed not too many sources about her. (For that matter, searching for the "first woman to head a state college or university" or some such wasn't much more helpful, as the search results pulled in a lot of women who were first to head some specific university or other, rather than anything more general.)

It's always interesting to me how many women in earlier American politics got their start in school-related capacities: two I wrote up a couple of years ago, for instance, Mary Gordon Ellis and Helen Timmons Henderson. I know why, but even so.

Talking of Women in Red matters, I'm actually on the road at the moment, visiting northern Mississippi in search of the ghost of Kate Freeman Clark, one of my other article subjects from way back when. She was from Holly Springs, which I'm planning on visiting tomorrow - left somewhere north of 1,000 of her own paintings to the town to found a museum, which they dutifully did. Hi-will you please look at the Taft, Tennessee article? The article had contained information that Taft, Tennessee had approximately 2,000 people living there. Taft, Tennessee is an unincorporated community and I have doubts the community had 2,000 people. Also Taft, Tennessee has a zip code; I am not sure the community has a post office. Many thanks. It looks like the population data was pulled from the ZIP code area; since that often covers a lot of area that isn't really part of the community, it's not necessarily accurate. It could be included with context, but since the article's so short I think it's best to leave it out for now. As for the post office info, the USPS Postmaster Finder indicates that it does have a post office, so I added that back in with a reference. The GNIS ID 647512 listed Marcoux Corners as a locale; however, the Lake Pleasant Township map has Marcoux Corners labeled as if an unincorporated community: Lake Pleasant Township Okay-should Marcoux Corners, Minnesota be an article even though the GNIS labeled the community as a locale; however, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has Marcoux Corners on its map as if it is a community. I'd leave it as a section of the township article for now. There certainly doesn't seem to be much left of the place, and from the description in the article it strikes me as more of a locale. We can always change our mind if we find more info down the road, but in this case I wouldn't create an article just because of the township map. Hi-I been editing the Swiftown, Mississippi article. Would you please look at the article? I added a citation for the zip code and I am not sure if this is the correct citation for the zip code. One comment; I always tried to follow the format for unincorporated communities and have provided a wiki link for the United States. However, some editors have delink the United States in unincorporated communities articles and of article about different places. This is getting confusing. Thanks for updating the article. I added the official USPS reference for the ZIP code. As for the link to United States, I don't personally care either way; I think the links are fine, though I also know there are a few editors who really care about removing that link, and I don't think it's worth standing in their way. (From a policy standpoint, it probably does count as overlinking, though I've never had a huge problem with overlinking in the first place.)
