How did you get accesss to all of those Zootaxa sources? I would like to help you out so that I can get them redacted from the page history. Scorpions1325 (talk) 12:28, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Scorpions1325, Let me send you a message over on discord. — The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 14:43, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
Thanks. I can safely say that all content that plagiarizes more than 250 bytes of Zootaxa can be redacted. All of the ones that I checked were egregious enough. Scorpions1325 (talk) 22:16, 12 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from Yeatard (02:48, 10 August 2024)

I have realized my name sounds like a slur, is there a way I can change it to something else, so it doesn't sound like a slur? --Yeatard (talk) 02:48, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

Yeatard, Yes, you can change your username. For simple requests: If you have a confrimed email, you can use this link. If you don't have a confrimed email, click this link. I would highly recommend you read WP:Changing username before changing your name. That page should give you all information you need. Hope this helps. — The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 15:33, 10 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi,

I'm advised that you removed the text I added to https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/The_Proofreaders%27_Page_and_Other_Uncollected_Items in my attempts to quote a source as demanded by one of Wikipedia's random bots.

I can quite accept that the approach I used to quote a source might not be right as I don't understand the Wikipedia approach at all, but given this was a quotation BY Google of text that I wrote, could you clarify quite how it constitutes a copyright violation?

Regards,

 Phil S-P Philsp (talk) 21:05, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
Hello @Philsp: here's the problem. Even if you own the text, Wikipedia can not host the text since it's still protected under copyright. Even if you are the owner of the copyrighted material, you adding the text to an article doesn't give Wikipedia the right to host said content. You must explicitly give permission to Wikipedia to use host your copyrighted content. You can give Wikipedia permission by visiting this page and following the steps listed on that page. If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 22:27, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
I'm not going to spend a lot of time on this, but the text is NOT copyrighted - it was made freely available as publicity information to go with the book which is why Google, Amazon and anybody else can quote it at will. Text is only copyrighted if I explicitly copyright it and I have not done so in this case. Philsp (talk) 07:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
@Philsp: unless it explicitly says the text is public domain or under a license, it's copyrighted. Just because it's "freely available," doesn't mean it's free of copyright. Not like you should even be adding the text anyways, promoting your own content. If you wrote the text, there should be no reason for you to be adding it to an article about a book which you wrote. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 15:09, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
OK, I give up. I have no idea how I can write an article without adding text that I wrote (which is a contradiction in terms) nor how one piece of text that I wrote magically differs in some way from another piece of text that I wrote, nor, indeed, how I am supposed to flag everything I write as being public domain. I really don't have time for this nonsense any more - I added the page 13 years ago in good faith and there's really little more I can say. Philsp (talk) 20:43, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
@Philsp: I get that you added page in good faith, but I'm just here to tell you that the text you added was a copyright violation. Whether the page should be deleted or not is a different story and quite frankly, I don't really have an opinion on that. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 19:03, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
And as I have said more than once, it was NOT a copyright violation. Your suggestion that all text is copyrighted unless "it explicitly says the text is public domain or under a license" is simply nonsense. There is no difference "of type" between the text I originally added to the article (which was not deemed a copyright violation) and the replacement (which was, for no valid reason) and there is no requirement for every line added to a Wikipedia article to be explicitly labelled as PD or licensed
If you can explain why one piece of public domain text that I write IS a copyright violation and another piece ISN'T then I'd be happy to listen, but simply repeating the baseless claim that the text was a copyright violation is unhelpful.
I agree that whether or not the page should be deleted is a different story, and is one I have very little interest in - I am only concerned with being repeatedly falsely accused of copyright violation when no such violation occurred. Philsp (talk) 19:22, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
@Philsp: I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say the "original text."
When you say, there is no requirement for every line added to a Wikipedia article to be explicitly labelled as PD or licensed. Not necessarily, but if you copy from a copyrighted source, it has to fall under fair use. The4lines |||| (Talk) (Contributions) 19:33, 17 August 2024 (UTC)
