Five times expansion

I've been doing the odd bit of reviewing at DYK. I notice you and others count characters for checking five times expansion. Can you let me know how you are doing the character count? Is there a particular tool you use that ignores refs and formatting characters etc? Cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 00:35, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

There are two tools (there's also a description at Wikipedia:Did you know/DYKcheck). Prosesize is the original, and just calculates the prose size. DYKcheck includes a modified version of prosesize, so it also checks for prose length, and a lot of other DYK-specific stuff like date of creation and the presence of inline citations. DYKcheck can calculate for 5x expansions automatically. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 00:42, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK

Thanks for getting back to me. The Thorny Yellowwood is a rainforest tree, seldom seen by anyone. The main reference to this tree is by the botanist Alexander Floyd.

Adding inline citations would all refer back to his book, Floyd, A.G., Rainforest Trees of Mainland South-eastern Australia, Inkata Press 1989, ISBN 0-909605-57-2. In my nearly 20 years of walking in rainforests of NSW, I have only seen ONE Thorny Yellowwood.

I attempted to add inline citations to the article on the Thorny Yellowwood, however, I received error messages. And I attempted to correct these with the Wikipedia assistance. However, this was not successful. Please put Thorny Yellowwood on the DYK page. It is a remarkable and beautiful Citrus tree. Scarcely known by anyone and worthy of further knowledge.

I've responded at the nominations page. The article still has issues, but I'm sure they can be fixed with a little effort. Shubinator (talk) 00:15, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

About the Thorny Yellowwood DYK submission

Just wanted to explain that User:Poyt448 is very new to Wikipedia, he only started in May. Nonetheless he has been making some very good contributions, but does not yet know all there is to know about a few things, like citations, so if it is possible to help him out, or at least to encourage him a bit, that would be great. This is his first DYK submission. Best to you, Invertzoo (talk) 12:13, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Question

Am I right in that on June 2nd at 08:21 and 14:21 the same hooks were on the main page?--Giants27 (t|c|r|s) 02:18, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Yes. The bot has done this once before as well. Seems like a bug...I'll see if I can find a culprit. Thanks for bringing it up. Shubinator (talk) 23:44, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
Not a bug after all (and I think I'm mistaken about the previous time). The prep area wasn't cleared the first time the set was loaded into the queues, so the set got loaded into two queues. The bot did everything correctly, but since the same set was in two different queues, it looks like nothing happened. See 1 and 2. Shubinator (talk) 00:01, 5 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and the archive time at the top of a set corresponds to when a set was taken off the Main Page, instead of when it was put on. It's a bit confusing, but I remember that the set is sandwiched between two times, which is the duration of that set's run (the bottom time when it was put on, the top time when it was taken off). DYK for Goa liberation movement

Thanks for clearing this DYK. You have mentioned the redlinks. I redlink names and events which I feel deserve a Wkipedia article. This way any visitor to the page who may want to create it can start from there. I also queue them up for development later. Would you suggest that I should remove the redlinks? You can reply on this page itself --Deepak D'Souza 19:03, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

A few redlinks are fine, but Goa liberation movement has quite a few. In general, each paragraph should have more bluelinks than redlinks. The "Liberation of Dadra & Nagar Haveli" section has proportionately the most redlinks. You could keep a separate list in userspace (or off-wiki) of possible articles for later. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 19:42, 6 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Will do as you said.--Deepak D'Souza 02:31, 7 June 2009 (UTC)

DYKcheck "anomaly"

Hi Shubinator, I've been using your script for a while now and I've never encountered a problem before. When I run it on One Cell in the Sea, it returns 6153 B of prose and says that 5x expansion began on January 3, 2008. Yet expansion began on June 10, 2009 with this revision. I know your script uses a binary search to compute expansion and that sometimes it gets it wrong. Is this one of those moments, or am I just being stupid (which is quite possible!) --Bruce1eetalk 11:40, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it's because of the binary search. The script goes towards older or newer revisions based on the 1x line, which is 1230.6 here. The path that it follows is 1241, 878, 1179, 1209, 1396, 1251. The first revision it checks in February 2008 is above the line, so the script never searches dates after that. (Oh, and you're right, the 5x expansion did begin yesterday.) Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 02:05, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. As I said, this is the first anomaly I've encountered with your script, and I use it often. --Bruce1eetalk 05:50, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
No problem. I'm happy you like the script; a lot of effort went into it. Shubinator (talk) 02:18, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Wiki etiquette at DYK query

What's the etiquette on deleting noms at the bottom of the DYK noms list. Some are tagged as "no", but others have unresolved issues. I'm across not deleting ones where there are signs of activity, or the article is waiting on a reviewer rather than on action from a nominator or editor, but not game to know whether to axe the other two sorts. Any guidance? hamiltonstone (talk) 02:42, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

In general, noms at the bottom can be deleted if issues have been raised (and they haven't been resolved) and there hasn't been any discussion in the past few days. It's also good to see if the nominator has been told of the problem by checking their talk page; if they haven't, you can stick a {{DYKproblem}} on their talk and wait another day or two. Noms that obviously could never be eligible for DYK (such as a previous appearance at DYK or ITN) are often deleted within days of it being tagged with a X. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 15:07, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Hadn't thought about checking whether the nominator had been pinged. Appreciate the feedback. hamiltonstone (talk) 08:20, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

DYK query for Vidyalankar Institute of Technology

Hey, I'm pretty new to editing on wikipedia, and this was my first DYK nomination. Just wanted to know how i could remove more errors from this article. I formatted the references and added more refs from websites other than the institute's own. Any tips would be welcome.

Shravan.Iyer (talk) 14:07, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

More reliable sources would help. Also, more references in general would be good; articles should have at least one reference per paragraph. Possibly controversial claims (like among the more reputed colleges in Mumbai) must be sourced. Some of the mundane information (heads of departments, address, etc.) can be removed. You might be able to find more interesting facts from newspaper articles. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 14:18, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. I already added some newspaper article references and will find some more. Shravan.Iyer (talk) 14:24, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Bluebirds Flying High DYK query

Please could you comment on my DYK entry on Bluebirds Flying High? Cheers. 03md 14:30, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

It was just nominated today. There are many other older nominations that need review. Shubinator (talk) 14:36, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
I'll just put it in this section but can you check out this nom cause I nommed it on May 30 and it's only gotten one review so far.--Giants27 (t|c) 14:46, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Comments left at the noms page. Shubinator (talk) 15:00, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
Could you have a look at my nomination now it has been there for a week. It has been reviewed by one editor already but I do not agree with their interpretation. 03md 22:21, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Commented at the noms page. Shubinator (talk) 22:50, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

The 3rd Time Around DYK

I added some material to the article, I believe it now has over 1500 characters of prose. --Lost Fugitive (talk) 07:00, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

Metcalfe House, Delhi

Hi! Shubinator,

In the past you have reviewed and approved many of my DYKs as Admn. I am, therefore, writing to you with a request to let me know the status of my two DYKs, which are pending for nearly 10 days. The first one is Metcalfe House, Delhi, which has not been reviewed so far. But I have again done some more editing to remove confusion and for grammar corrections. The article on Coronation Park, Delhi has been reviewed and copy edited by me and other users also to comply with reviwers comments and suggestions. Please let me know if I need to do anything more to see further progress on my two articles. Thanks.--Nvvchar (talk) 05:17, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

I've replied on the noms page. And I'm not an admininstrator, just a user willing to help. Shubinator (talk) 14:59, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the timely help. I really appreciate it. It gives me confidence to continue contributing to en:wikipedia.--Nvvchar (talk) 01:21, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

HousekeepingBot missed one?

Just came across this article, which housekeeping bot seems not to have re-tagged with an updated {{dyktalk}} template. Any idea why it might have been missed? (I'm assuming because the "tag" there is strangely formatted or something...but if it is, might it be possible to run the bot again, with its eyes peeled for that kind of formatting, since other articles may have been missed as well?) rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 13:00, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

The bot hasn't gotten to 2006 yet, it's in July 2005. I'm running it sporadically on the weekends so I can keep an eye on it. That tag is a bit weird, but the bot should be able to pick up on it. Shubinator (talk) 13:06, 20 June 2009 (UTC)
Ah, got it. Thanks, rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 13:08, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Noticed ongoing conversation

May I suggest WP:PUI if you have persistent concerns with that image? You don't have to go this one alone. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:22, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Heh, true. I'll start a section... Thanks! Shubinator (talk) 13:29, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Redundant bot tagging

Hi. You may want to take a closer look at your bot's templating procedures. It recently added {{dyktalk}} to Talk:Public Square, which already had similar information included via two other templates. - Eureka Lott 16:31, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

I didn't know {{maindyktalk}} existed. It looks like only 6 talk pages use that template. I'll manually change them to {{dyktalk}}, which is what it should be. I wasn't aware that some Wikiproject tags also use have a dyk parameter. It's probably best to use {{dyktalk}} across the board, since other bots (like GimmeBot) look for dyktalk. Shubinator (talk) 16:40, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, when {{maindyktalk}} was created, it was already redundant. I'll try to get it deleted after the templates are fixed so this confusion doesn't happen again. Shubinator (talk) 16:44, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Great, thanks. Now that maindyktalk is no longer in use, perhaps it would be simplest to redirect it to dyktalk. - Eureka Lott 17:06, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Usually redirecting would be fine, but I don't want anyone using maindyktalk any more (and with a template redirect, maindyktalk would still work) so the various bots don't get confused. I've tagged it for deletion, and it'll probably be deleted in a week. Thanks for letting me know. Shubinator (talk) 18:37, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Template talk:Did you know#Trans March

Hi, I had some technical issues and some wikidrama so was very tardy in submitting an article for the Stonewall anniversary which is today (the 28th) if you're willing and able I'd love to see if this can still be squeezed in. I've put the source for the hook with the nom. Any help is quite appreciated. -- Banjeboi 03:42, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Looks like it was just put into the queues. Shubinator (talk) 15:04, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for looking into it and generally for your DYK work! -- Banjeboi 01:16, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
