Queue bump

Done. Cbl62 (talk) 03:50, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

I think I got it right now. Let me know if not. Cbl62 (talk) 03:58, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Next update

Thanks for the bump that it's time to update DYK. I was just speedy deleting some of the garbage that comes in, especially attack articles. It will be a pleasant break to do something positive! Royalbroil 04:32, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure! You can do the crediting! I think it's a great way to promote yourself and the work that you do at DYK. I know it was a big part of me becoming an admin! Royalbroil 04:38, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Wow, you looked at my RFA?! How interesting! I keep track of each 1000th edit in a milestones subpage. If I notice it, I try to make each thousandth edit show the diversity of what I've done. Poking an admin about doing the DYK update is an excellent one! Thanks for the bump about updating the next queue number. It used to not be necessary when we had to update DYK manually all of the time (before the bot). I hadn't even checked DYK lately - last time I checked it was several hours away. Royalbroil 05:00, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
I was SHOCKED that my RfA was unanimous. I expected to get bulldozed over. They had to put major pressure on my arm to get me to say yea. It took User:YellowMonkey, under his old name, to convince me. I really respect him. I actually had initially opposed my nominator's RFA and got flack / threats from that oppose. Royalbroil 05:16, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the bump. I was ready to go to bed - another minute or 2 later... Anyhow, it worked. Thanks for watching the queues so close! I hope that you're able to program a good DYK bot and I'm excited to see that something's happening. Royalbroil 05:43, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
How can someone know if the next queue or next next queue should be used to load the next queue? Royalbroil 01:34, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

I think all of the maintenance is done and the pics are all deleted. There is an issue with one hook I will raise on the DYK talk page and then I am calling it a night. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:20, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
I reread the hook and it was OK, so I moved NN to Q5. Have a good one, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:28, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Mainpage Pic

I understood the software does that automatically now. I'm pretty sure the bot never protected the pic, but no-one followed up to protect the pic when it was running. Gatoclass (talk) 18:15, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

we might want to tag the queues with {{DYKbotdo}} so they'll be ready when Ameliorate's done debugging
I'm sure we'll get plenty of notice when he's ready to try it out again :) Gatoclass (talk) 07:23, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Third-party source in Akademiska Sångföreningen

Now that was interesting. I was just about to add a third-party source for Akademiska Sångföreningen being the oldest choir in Finland, when I realized you had added a different one! Both were from FIMIC's web page though. Well, I will just add my source too (it's interesting anyway), along with some other improvements I had been working on. This should make first DYK hook suggestion for the article comply with standards, don't you think? Kaspersu (talk) 15:39, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Yup, the original hook works now with the extra sources. It's up to whoever assembles that set of hooks which one they'll take. With the backlog we've got now it'll probably take a few days, maybe a week, to get on the Main Page. Shubinator (talk) 15:45, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

DYK lists

Hey Shubinator, I'm really not sure about how the expansion counting goes for lists at DYK, but could you let me know about Big East Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year before I would work on a hook? Thanks a lot, Grsz11 01:46, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Lists follow the same rules as other articles, but the definition of "prose" is key here. Information in bulleted lists or tables don't count towards prose. You already have a 5x expansion of prose according to DYKcheck, but you're not above 1500 characters yet. Right now you've got 1298 characters of prose. For lists that pretty much means that you need to expand the lead. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 02:06, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick reply. Even if tables don't count, it's pretty easy to expand the prose when their is none. I'll see if I can throw anything else together. Thanks, Grsz11 02:10, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, tables are extreme cases of regular articles. If there was a lame list to begin with, it probably didn't have much of a lead, so it's easy to expand. Nominators don't like it though when they put a lot of effort into the body of the list, and then they're told it doesn't count towards expansion. We get more IAR verifies on lists than normal articles because of that. Shubinator (talk) 02:22, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Luridiformis mushroom pics

I'm confused too....never really got into commons. I did join, and downloaded three pics when i first started in Wiki. Havent a clue how to access Commons if i needed a pic for an article. This is why i only do articles of species that i have a picture of. I'm happy as i am i'm afraid. Early on...i was advised to pick the Own Work..............option, by a friend. Commons seems to contain a large amount of poor quality pictures of fungi.......I didn't want to get lost in that crowd. Luridiformis (talk) 14:30, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Will images uploaded to Commons directly be attributed to me?...Also...i have loads of pics on Wiki anyway. Would these be easy ..........sorry i have limited time.....to think about this. Think i might just leave it as it is..Luridiformis (talk) 15:39, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Every one of the fungi pictures i have ever taken, are easy to view from my Userpage. Anyone wanting pics for legit fungi articles on Wiki can request them from me, and i will download their chosen pic into their article. Most fungi people have been to my Userpage. If they do not know of my collection, they can go to commons. Luridiformis (talk) 16:07, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Next update needed

Yea, I was just starting on it! Can you do the credits? This will be my 4th straight! I thought I wasn't helping at DYK too much lately (wink). Royalbroil 18:48, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I've was serious that I was doing more than my share. 4 straight updates means that I did one right before bed, slept around 6 hours, and did one as soon as I got up.
I've done worse. During the Christmas 2007 season I did 3 updates on Christmas Eve and 4 on Christmas day! Somehow it all fit in easy with my life. That was where I first realized who User:Gatoclass was because he was doing an awesome job with keeping the next update queue full, just like you're doing now! Those 2 days were a major factor for me nominating him for adminship. Things were a lot different then. There were no queues, just one for the next update, and few non-admin helpers. The admin had to verify each hook, move it to the next update queue, then promote it to the main page. Then there was the crediting which took at least 20 minutes instead of about 5/10 min. I could easily spend 2-3 hours per update.
I commented on the possible April Fool's Day hook. I know that everyone keeps thinking that I'm in charge of April Fool's, but I don't feel like I am. If it's funny enough, please move it to the DYK section on WP:AFMP. I think it's marginal, but closer with the ALT3 that I suggested. Oh, and another thing: Could you start a new section on my talk page occasionally for the DYK prompting? It's way to hard to find the old section that you keep posting in. Keep up the great work! Royalbroil 19:20, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Ero e Leandro

Can you recheck this? I was evidently just about to hit save on my expansion when you took the count. (Though I do think it was slightly above the number before, if you counted the short section that was after the list of musical numbers.)Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 02:36, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

The length is good now. The prose counts are calculated by the prosesize tool, which doesn't count bulleted lists. You've got a stray stub tag by the way. Shubinator (talk) 02:43, 15 March 2009 (UTC)
Eh... I never understood the rating system. But if you say it's not a stub, I'll call it a non-stub =) Shoemaker's Holiday (talk) 02:52, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

DYK check

I believe you are the inventor of the DYK check? I have found it immensely useful, but what does it mean when it seems to be wrong? For the article Camperdown Cemetery, the DYK check says that it has not been expanded in the last 10 days, but the history shows it has been expanded 5x since March 14. Am I being misled by something, and the article has not really been expanded? Regards, —Mattisse (Talk) 02:23, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I find it quite wonderful that you could invent the DYK check! —Mattisse (Talk) 02:25, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Heh, inventor makes it sound much more noble. The short answer is that the tool can get confused on the expansion check. The long answer: The expansion check takes the longest time to process of all the parts because it makes many calls to the server to pin down the revision with less than 1/5 the current prose. To make the number of calls manageable, DYKcheck uses a binary search algorithm to find the revision. In other words, each time it looks at a revision, it asks, is this revision less than 1/5 the current prose or not? If it is larger, DYKcheck moves back in time; if it is smaller, DYKcheck moves forward in time. In order to do this, the tool assumes that articles are always increasing in size. This is not a problem if the prose size fluctuates a little, but it can confuse DYKcheck if the prose size of the article crosses the 1/5 line more than once in its history. In mathematical terms, if 1/5 current prose = old revision prose has more than one solution, DYKcheck may return the wrong solution. For Camperdown Cemetery, this March 4 revision is a solution, but this April 2008 revision is also a solution. Hope this helps, Shubinator (talk) 02:35, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, the bottom line is that the article is eligible based on the expansion beginning March 14, I am assuming, unless I hear from you otherwise. Thanks! And it is a noble act to come up with the DYK check! —Mattisse (Talk) 02:54, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Stray stub tag patrol

Thanks for catching that. My basic template for new radio stations includes the stub tag because the first pass is usually just a few paragraphs long. This time, I kept finding cool stuff to add to the KVXX article (including that awesome line at DYK) and it wound up way longer than a stub. - Dravecky (talk) 03:36, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, the article looked pretty nice, so I assumed you just forgot about it, and took it out. Apparently DYK admins sometimes make the same mistakes as the other DYK nominators :) Shubinator (talk) 05:31, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

The Office

Thanks for your support on my DYK for Golden Ticket (The Office)! Incidentally, this is probably a stupid question, but I'm still new enough around Wikipedia that I don't necessarily know all the lingo; when you say "it's always nice to promote GAs on the MP", what does MP mean? lol. — Hunter Kahn (contribs) 00:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Oh, MP is Main Page (and GA is Good Article of course).  :) Shubinator (talk) 01:24, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Ndash

In this edit, there already was an en dash. You can make an en dash 2 ways: One is the way you did (which I can't repeat because nowiki doesn't work for it). The other is by clicking the en dash near the bottom of the edit page, on the line that starts with "Insert", after the down arrow. Art LaPella (talk) 03:25, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

If you're as preoccupied with things like dashes as I am, I can tell - – and — apart just by looking. Other ideas are to copy a dash into the "find" field, or to edit using – or — , so that the edit won't go through if you aren't really changing it. I'll try the DAB finder (my existing system depends on article size being under 1000 bytes). Art LaPella (talk) 03:58, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
I must have been the first to try DAB finder on tomorrow's featured article! [1] Art LaPella (talk) 05:00, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Or today's! [2] Art LaPella (talk) 05:09, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Sure, always glad to lend a hand. Good job on the article; it's got a quaint and homey feeling to it :) Shubinator (talk) 03:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey Shubinator, just in case you didn't notice, I left you a response at WT:DYK#Update to NewDYKnom : adding link to article history. Basically, whether or not I decide to go ahead with updating the template will probably depend on how much extra work it gives you with updating DYKcheck...if it's not too hard to update DYKcheck then I figure it won't hurt anything, but if it would be a huge pain then it's probably not enough payoff for the effort. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 18:57, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

I responded on WT:DYK; it would be relatively easy to do. I won't have much free time on my hands until Thursday though.
By the way, I noticed an error in the nomination template for the Lori Padilla nom; the credit tag shows Rlevse, but Esemono created the page. Rlevse had nominated the hook right below that one though. Shubinator (talk) 03:10, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, that can only have happened if Esemono copied & pasted Rlevse's nom and then filled in his name instead of Rlevse's. Some people do that instead of using the actual template, and usually forget to change the hidden template stuff since they don't see it (Billy Hathorn, for example, is notorious for copying & pasting the template, even after I have left him something like 3 messages explaining exactly how to use it). rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 03:14, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Heh, maybe you could just delete the credits if they're wrong to give him more incentive :P Shubinator (talk) 03:16, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok, I think I've fixed the tool so it'll recognize the history link as a history link and not a title. I can't be sure without a test on the nominations page though. Shubinator (talk) 01:04, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

All right, I nominated an article as a test: T:TDYK#Pocholo Ramirez (history). Let's see if it works.... rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 03:28, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
There was a small hitch, but I fixed it. Looks like it's working now! Shubinator (talk) 03:35, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Excellent! Do you also need to test it on an article with a disambiguated title (something along the lines of [[Stuff (dab)]] (history) ) ? rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 03:38, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the tool doesn't know about dab pages. It would be nice to test it out on a multi-article nom though... Shubinator (talk) 03:41, 28 March 2009 (UTC)
Next time I see a multi-nom pop up, I'll sneak it and replace the formatting with the template generated by User:Rjanag/NewDYKnom dev. (I don't see myself writing multiple new articles within the next couple days, so I'll have to resort to hijacking someone else's.) rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 03:53, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

DYKcheck explanation

When I think about how to incorporate DYKcheck into WP:Did you know/Learning DYK, I find that some of the explanation would be better inside of DYKcheck instead of Learning DYK. So unless there is a technical problem with making your error messages a lot longer, I suggest:

For the error message "Article has not been created or expanded within the past 10 days (n days)": First of all, I get that message for articles like Rapunzel (film) which has indeed been expanded within the past 10 days as I write this. I think you meant "expanded 5x".

My main suggestion is to add the following long disclaimer to that message, assuming it is true: "If the article was recently moved from user space, or if a previous version contained a Wikipedia:Split or a Wikipedia:Copyright violation, DYKcheck won't account for those situations." I could put it in my explanation, but it would be much more likely to be read if it were inside of DYKcheck itself, and my guess is that it wouldn't be much harder to program than just to edit the script's existing error text. Also, it wouldn't confuse other messages because it would only come up when needed.

I won't be available for questions until tomorrow. Art LaPella (talk) 04:44, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you. Art LaPella (talk) 01:14, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Shivam Parikh

I am refering to the undos required to be done - due to previous changes by someone who wanted to show up a different person alltogether.

If you see the changes done you will notice someone tried changing the entire person being posted here from the original person in India to another "Shivam Parikh" located somewhere else. The reason I undid the changes were because the profile was edited and altered for someone else. I have messaged the person to create a NEW PROFILE for the New Jersey based "Shivam Parikh". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Indiahn (talkcontribs) 06:07, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

pardon the undo. i was referring to the edit done by Danyeo - who changed half the profile to suit another person from New Jersey, USA using the information and profile of our "person" based in India. In order to undo the changes s/he had made we had undo yours as well. I apologize for the same. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Indiahn (talkcontribs) 06:11, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

You should have added the constructive edit back in after undoing the questionable edits. I'm not sure what edit of mine you're referring to since the only edit I have made to the article has not been undone. Also, please sign your comments on talk pages with four tildes (~~~~). Please follow the nomination format at User:Durova/Triple crown winner's circle/Nominations instructions. Please trim to three entries for Royalbroil (one DYK, one GA, one FA or featured content). Cirt (talk) 04:23, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

TIV Resolution DYK

Thanks for fixing the formatting. I tried using the template but couldn't get the picture to display correctly with it, so resorted to manual. Mjroots (talk) 07:21, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, that's odd. Did you remember to leave the "File:" or "Image:" off the beginning? If you think there's a bug in the nom template, Rjanag's the guy to talk to. Anyways, I'm always happy to help out. Shubinator (talk) 03:48, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
