Hi Paul, Ray of Raylaur15 here. Glad my edits of the Calypso Rose page are welcomed. I am currently editing a few other Caribbean music Wiki pages--this is an area I have done considerable research and writing on.
I am interested in creating a new wiki article on West Indian soca arranger and pianist Frankie McIntosh. I believe he meets your "notable" criteria, as he arranged the music and played on hundreds of influential scoa (soul/calypso music from Trinidad)) recordings during the 1980s and 1990s. He worked with all the big stars--Sparrow, Lord Kitchner Calypso Rose, Chalkdust, and scores of others. His accomplishments are well documented in the Caribbean press and in several scholarly sources.
If I understand correctly, before I can create a new wiki article, I must first edit 10 exiting wiki articles. Once I complete this will I be automatically eligible, or is there some additional procedure I need to go through?
Appreciate your advice here.
best,
Ray 2603:7000:8106:B298:3D5A:A0F1:DE9D:FBF3 (talk) 17:30, 23 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hie again Paul. I'm not sure why I received the above reply, it appears to be a copy of my initial message to you with no reply. Am I missing something?
Again, I'm looking for advice regarding who and when I can submit a new Wikipedia article.
thanks,
Ray Raylaur15 (talk) 12:43, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi Paul, Raylaur 15 here. I have now edited ten Wikipedia pages over the past week (Oct 21-25) as follows:
Calypso Rose
Soca Music
Calypso Music
Latin Jazz
Granville Straker
Mighty Shadow
Steel Pan
List Caribbean Music Genres
Lord Kitchener
Mighty Sparrow
Am I now eligible to write an original Wikipedia article? Is there some official approval protocol I need to go through, or can I simply go ahead and write and submit the article?
Please advise.
best,
Ray 2603:7000:8106:B298:3D5A:A0F1:DE9D:FBF3 (talk) 12:42, 26 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Regarding my potential COI with Frankie McIntosh, I have known him for several years, interviewed him, and photographed him. I mention him in a short article I wrote about Brooklyn Soca Music [(2014). "The Brooklyn Soca Connection: Frankie McIntosh and Straker Records". American Music Review. XLIV (1)], and in a longer work, Jump Up: Caribbean Carnival Music in New York City (Oxford University Press, 2019).
All evaluative language in this Wiki article comes from quotations by Caribbean music critics that were published in the Caribbean press, not from me. I have attempted to maintain a neutral tone in my language and all information has been carefully referenced.
And finally, I have received no compensation from McIntosh or anyone else for writing this article.
Raylaur15 Raylaur15 (talk) 21:48, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
ThanQ for finally admitting to your connection; it is not a "potential" CoI, it is substantial; moreover, I note you have cited-yourself, establishing a connection going back to 2014. There is a thing called WP:SELFCITE, but it is not good Wikiquette to try to tough-it-out as you have done, instead of 'fessing up when queried.
I have removed the names of family as non-notable and un-encyclopedic; it makes no difference to a reader, unless they were notable and had been written about independently (of yourself). I would also mention that many of your edits (when trying to achieve qualification to establish a new article) are wrongly marked as minor; any change which alters the way the prose is read and/or understood is not minor.
Regarding your objection to the $ banner, this may be replaced by {{COI}} in the future. Also I note you have been trolled just above here by a US IP address - you can delete anything on your Talk page, but when doing so you are deemed to have read it (not that this aspect operates with nonsensical broken English). I hope this helps.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 03:00, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello Devonian Wombat. I have bee trying with mixed success to fix up my Frankie McIntosh article. Evidently editor One1596 flagged my article that it warning that it might have been written for undisclosed payments. I can assure you this is not true--I am the sole author and received no compensation from McIntosh or anyone else.
Is there some way that tag can please be removed?
It was also suggested that I add a COI tag revealing my relationship to McIntosh. I did this, but shortly after it appeared on the article page it disappeared. Not sure what happened.
Could you be of help here?: I'm fine with the COI tag, but the undisclosed payments tag is totally false and sets a bad tone.
Your advice please.
best,

To declare a conflict of interest, you need to create a Userpage by clicking on the tab with red "User page" text at the top of this page next to Talk, then paste in the following code from this read pane (not the editing pane): {{UserboxCOI|1=Frankie McIntosh}} Be sure to include the four curly brackets, shown as two before and two after.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 03:29, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Dear Rocknrollmancer: I have followed your instructions and declared a COI on my Rayluar15 User Page (https://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/User:Raylaur15) for the Frankie McIntosh article. Is that all I need to do? Can the Undisclosed Payment tag now be taken down? Do I have to do something else to make that happen, or can you, or can you alert the editor that will do this? I really would appreciate it, as the Undisclosed Payment tag makes it seem like I'm knowingly engaging in some deceitful behavior, which I am not. As noted above, I was not paid to create or edit this page.
I agree with your editing out the family information--not important. Going forward on my own edits, I will no longer mark things as "minor." I wasn't clear on what constituted minor edits.
I apologize for the confusion. I was not totally clear on WWiki's COI policy, or how to declare a COI. Indeed, I am still struggling with both procedures and how to communicate with you folks as this is all new to me. By the way, should this note go to the original editor, Devonian Wombat, and if so, how do I "bing" him/her?
Again I thank you for your help, and please advise if there is anything else I need to do to clean up the article. As I said, I'm thrilled to have the article accepted, and I want to follow all WWiki protocols.

I'll take the responsibility of removing the UPE tag. Please consider using the Edit Request Wizard or the {{request edit}} template on the article's talk page if there are significant changes you want to make to the article, per our COI guideline. And please - again - try to remain signed in to your account when editing. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 18:18, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Will do. Thanks so much! 2603:7000:8106:B298:B1BD:E509:62B7:23A9 (talk) 18:20, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've left a comment on your Articles for Creation submission, which can be viewed at Draft:Los Pleneros de la 21. Thanks! Naraht (talk) 15:07, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Dear Naraht:
Thank you for your comments on my Los Pleneros de la 21 draft. As you can see, I have tightened up the sentences on bomba and plena and removed the internal youtube links as you suggested. I have left in the two select video links because I think it's important that readers have a quick link right to the music. I have found this to be extremely useful, especially for students. They are links to public performances (not commercial recordings), so I doubt there could be any usage issues. However, if you think its best, I will remove them too.
Now that I have made these changes is it possible to move forward with a decision about accepting the article? It has been over three months since my initial submission.
Thanks again for your time and advice,

Hi Raylaur15, great job on the article! In case you were not aware, there is no need for you to submit drafts to AfC for review. You can move drafts you create to article space yourself where they will be reviewed by WP:NPP. Of course you are welcome to continue to submit to AfC.

You may also be interested in getting a "hook" on WP:DYK where it will be featured on the main page and/or getting the article to WP:GA status. Either way, keep up the good work! If you ever have questions or need help, you can ask at the Teahouse. S0091 (talk) 17:26, 11 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice S0091, will consider this for the next article.
