"Original state routes"

edit

Hi; just a quick note...if Simpson's page states that a route is an "original state highway," then it was certified in 1924. This information can be found at Explanation of the Ohio State Highway System (The Unofficial Ohio State Highways Web Site) by John Simpson. Just a little tidbit for ya! Article Rating

edit

Good day. I noticed you recently rated the Columbus, Ohio article as "B" class. However, there was no explanation as to the reasoning behind this mark. Could you provide some justification for it as well as suggest ways in which the article could be improved? That would be immensely helpful. The article is quite extensive and very well referenced, so I am a bit surprised that it was given the same grade as approximately 1.5 years ago prior to a number of major improvements. --Analogue Kid 14:28, 20 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ohioan, I've quickly checked out the Columbus, Ohio article and it appears to be ready to become a good article. If you want, nominate the article on the good article nomination page. I'll then review it more completely and will be happy to promote it (if everything checks out).--Alabamaboy 23:57, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

An important letter

edit

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

Regards,

I honestly don't know. I do know that SR 761 was tagged with speedy deletion because I was the only one who contributed to the article. There are several Ohio state route articles that only one person contributed to, so maybe they're going after all of them? I'll keep an eye out; maybe the members of the project just need to contribute more to other articles. MilkTaco 18:00, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

Dayton, Ohio Roads Meet

edit

Hi - This is Dan, a frequent contributor to the Ohio Roads Project, and also the webmaster of Ohio Highway Ends (http://www.state-ends.com/ohio/). I just wanted to give you a heads up that there is a gathering of roads enthusiasts, if you will, taking place in Dayton on Saturday, 5/10 at Logan's Road House, 2819 Centre Dr., Fairborn, OH 45324. The first part is a meet-and-greet over lunch, giving people a chance to shoot the breeze, with some attendees potentially bringing some interesting maps, atlases, pictures and more. There may even be a freebie or two floating out there at the gathering (such as a free map). After lunch, we'll divide up and take a tour of some highlights from Dayton area highways, including the almost-completed I-70/75 interchange (the "Freedom Veterans' Crossroads"), reconstruction of the I-75/OH 4 interchange, the newly-reconstructed US 35 through downtown Dayton, and a side tour to an historic crossroad: Dixie Highway & the National Road. We should be wrapped up with the tour by 4:30-5:00 PM. That's a brief synopsis of what the event will entail; I am sending a special invite to all of the Ohio Roads Project editors. These events are always fun, unique and very informative. If you have the opportunity on that day, I would like to invite you to join us. If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please let me know in the coming days. Thanks, and have a great week! DanTheMan474 (talk) 13:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Issue II - May 2008
From the editor:

Here's Issue II of the project newsletter. We're trying to decide if this is sinking or floating. If you would like to contribute to next month's newsletter please jump right in at the News Desk! Have a great May.

The Ohio Portal

The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images.

Selected Article: Indian Head Rock

There is a eight ton rock in Ohio that was removed from the Ohio River. This rock is known as the Indian Head Rock Dating back to the early 1800’s, this rock was seen sticking out of the Ohio River and used as a navigational mark for barges along the river. The names of citizens from the town of Portsmouth, Ohio are carved into the rock from the late nineteenth a early twentieth centuries. Some of the names were of well known families from Ohio. They would swim out to the rock, have their picture taken with it or simply carve their names into it.
With the advent of the Locks and Dams along the Ohio River, the rock eventually was submerged, but the legend lived on. A gentleman from Ironton, Ohio located the rock after searching a very long time for it, and he and a crew of scuba divers recovered the rock and took it to the shore to be donated to Ohio for historical value.
After hearing the news about the rock being removed, Kentucky introduced legislation against the removal of the rock. They also want the diver who found it to be prosecuted for removing the rock. Kentucky owns the greatest part of the land the river runs on. Even the Army Corp. of Engineers got involved as to how to move the rock without damaging it. Kentucky wants to have it returned to the river.

From the editor:

This is the third edition of the WikiProject Ohio newsletter. If you have any project announcements feel free to drop them by the NewsDesk. It's request that you watchlist our talk page; so you can chime in on current discussions. Have a great June!

The Ohio Portal

The maintainers of the Ohio Portal are looking to get it to featured status. They would like to ask all project members to help improve it any way they can. What needs to be done most is the supplying of selected articles and images.

Getting the Project Moving
  • WikiProject Ohio as an entity doesn't have as much action as other state projects. For this reason it has been proposed that the inactive WikiProject Ohio Townships be added as our taskforce. There is a !poll going on at WT:OH and your opinion is essential in the matter!
  • Stepshep has also proposed sending an invite to everyone in Category:Wikipedians in Ohio with an invite to join the project. If you are already a member you would not receive the notice of course. Once again, please note your opinion on the project talkpage.

The Central Avenue Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district located at 201 to 338 Central Avenue in Dayton, Ohio. It consists of late 19th and 20th Century Revival-style houses as well as late Victorian-style houses, which were all originally single-family residences.

On December 16, 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Each month a new Ohio related stub is the selected article. If you have a new stub created feel free to nominate it at the NewsDesk.

Jump-Starting the Ohio Highways WikiProject

edit

OHWiki: Hope you're having a good July 4th weekend so far. I am working to start ramping up the Ohio Highways WikiProject on a much larger scale, especially coming off of one of the first Ohio highway GAs (Ohio State Route 716). There is a lot of work to do on this project, given a number of stubs and a number of routes that do not even have any pages, but we definitely have the people out there to make it happen...especially including yourself. I wanted to talk to you about some of the possibilities for this; please let me know if you would be interested, and if so we will coordinate from there. Thanks, and enjoy the remainder of your weekend! DanTheMan474 (talk) 17:30, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Daytona Beach, Florida, Demographics Table

edit

A while back, you added a demographics table to Daytona Beach, Florida. I had to delete the figures from 1910/1920 because they are likely out of context. You are probably not aware that three separate cities, Daytona, Daytona Beach, and Seabreeze merged in 1926 into a consolidated Daytona Beach (so that the figures you pulled for 1910-1920 were only for the OLD Daytona Beach, which was a tiny city). Daytona was the oldest and largest of the three cities. I don't know if you can still dig up the data, but if you can pull up the populations for all three cities, it would be more accurate. Gamweb (talk) 17:12, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for doing the work to gather the additional info. I will have to figure out where to put the new infoboxes now! LOL - I was thinking about making separate pages for Daytona and Seabreeze - I guess I should do that now. (BTW: Daytona was founded in 1876; Daytona Beach and Seabreeze were both founded around 1900.) Gamweb (talk) 17:57, 3 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Demographics for Fun Coast, Florida

edit

Hi, I am working on a new page for Fun Coast (combined Flagler County and Volusia County) in Florida (in my sandbox first). I wanted to ask if you would be interested in helping me on a Demographics section for the article? I kind of like the way the demographics section in South Florida is put together, and am trying to figure out how to find the same data. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Request permission to use your photography

edit

Hello I found your downtown shot of Norwalk Ohio. I'd like to have your permission to present your photograph for use in in a new/remodeled restaurant in Norwalk. Upon approval we would enlarge it to 16x20, mat and frame it for use as wall decor in this single restaurant. Your name would appear in the credit line. Thank you for your time.

Yes, why not, you do have permission to use my photograph. I'm more then happy to allow you to present my photograph for use. The photograph will be nice enlarged to 16x20, mat and frame it for use as wall decor in a new/remodeled restaurant in Norwalk, Ohio. If all this gets done, I might sometime go up to Norwalk to see the mat and frame decor.—OHWiki 00:08, 28 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

PAW

edit

Dear OHWiki,

Thanks for uploading the Mechanics Bank photo into the Richland County NRHP list.

It reminded me that I had some photos from April 29, 2011 that I hadn't yet uploaded or quite figured out yet. On that afternoon I zipped through town and took photos of about 25 NRHP sites on Park Avenue West. I was disappointed that I couldn't snap all the PAW sites and unfortuneately couldn't quite figure out the adresses on a couple. Is there any chance you could check out or confirm a couple of these for me? Today I switched what I thought was

  • 428 PAW to 437 PAW, and
  • 365 PAW to 415 PAW

I believe they are now correct, but it bothers me that I wasn't sure when I uploaded them. If you see any other apparent mistakes please let me know.

I'm a bit obsessive about completing the NRHP county lists. Do you know that there are only about 22 NRHP sites left to photograph before the Richland County list is fully illustrated? In particular, I'd like to see the John Sherman Memorial Gateway (listed on July 8, 1983 at 699 Park Ave., W. 40°45′32″N 82°32′26″W right next to the Fraser House). I walked by this several times without knowing what I was looking for exactly, and even got a partial photo of half of it while taking a pic of a historical marker. It's right where Brinkerhoff Ave meets Park Ave. West. Any help would be appreciated.

All the best,

Smallbones (talk) 21:47, 11 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - any contribution of NRHP site pix is always appreciated. I'll assume that I finally figured out the right address for the right photo unless you move them around, but in the odd chance that I make it back to Mansfield again (from Philadelphia) I may check again. It looks to me like "Pacific Curios Antiques 365 Park Ave., W. 40°45′31″N 82°31′46″W" has been torn down for the Park Avenue car wash (381 PAW) with 359 immediately to the east. I don't have a clue as to why I didn't find the "John Krause House 428 Park Ave., W. 40°45′33″N 82°31′53″W". I wouldn't be too afraid of neighborhood disapproval in taking these types of pix - for every 100 sites I take, I'd say I get 3 or 4 disapproving glances or comments ("Why don't you mind your own business" or "leave us alone") and 10-20 positive comments ("You know I went to school there - it was a great place" or "I didn't think many people really knew how important this is"). Mostly, of course folks just ignore me!

Good work on the Richland County and Crawford County lists! Smallbones (talk) 00:53, 1 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Just saw your comments at Smallbones' talk. Unfortunately, the Register can sometimes get way behind: the Lockington Covered Bridge near Sidney in Shelby County was arsoned in 1989, and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St Marys in Auglaize County was listed a full year after it was demolished by its owner. Ohio politicians

edit

A lot of damage has been done to Ohio politicians, and I was hoping you could help fix it. For one, neither the Ohio House of Representatives or the Ohio Senate is up-to-date. Both have been updated, but have been reverted to show incorrect information. Notably, Louis Terhar, Nan Baker, Sean O'Brien, Bob Peterson, Andy Thompson, and Brian Hill have been deleted. Terhar is also not shown on the Ohio House page.

In the Senate, Larry Obhof has been deleted. Also, Tom Patton has not demonstrated as the new majority leader, and the resignation of Tim Grendell has not been shown. Would you mind recreating these pages, as well as demonstrating the resignation of Grendell and the making of Patton as majority leader? I think it needs to be done.

Could you propose recreating those pages? and updating the specifics in the Ohio Senate? Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.51.105.50 (talk) 16:01, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wooster High School

edit

Hi OHWiki, I'm pretty new to new to wikipedia and not sure if I'm even messaging you the correct way. Anyway, I uploaded a picture of Wooster High School to Wikimedia Commons a little bit ago and put it into for the "Wooster High School (Ohio)" article. I did a little research and saw that you do a lot of editing on Ohio articles and I was hoping you could help on this one. I was hoping you could help reformat the picture like all of your other articles, so they are all at least uniform, or simply take a better picture since mine isn't too clear. Ohio Wikimedians User Group - Invitation

edit

Hi OHWiki,

I'm Kevin, one of the founding members of the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. Created in July 2016, we're working to be a central group of Ohio Wikimedians who organize and support offline events, promote the Wikimedia movement in Ohio, build connections throughout our state, and above all, support each other. We already have a handful of members and have worked to support multiple events, including Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States and several Art+Feminism edit-a-thons at universities throughout Ohio.

I wanted to reach out to you and invite you to join the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. Being a part of the user group will allow easy communication between active Ohio editors, notifications of upcoming events in the Ohio area, and, if you're interested, the opportunity to help organize events such as edit-a-thons or workshops. Mansfield on OpenStreetMap

edit

Hello OHWiki,

I'm a former Wikipedia contributor (see my German page) now contributing to OpenStreetMap, the 'Wikipedia of the maps', for some years. I've been mapping some areas in Morrow and Richland Counties for a while now (espacially Mount Gilead and Ontario) and wanted to ask you if you would like to help me a bit, if you want to. Since I am not a local myself (actually living abroad) your additions could enrich the map a lot. :-)

2019 US Banknote Contest

edit
  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
