Many thanks for your recent edits on Alcoholism. I had intended to make several of the changes that you did, but I tend to be...easily distracted, and you beat me to it. I'm hoping that one of the more "expert" editors involved will be able to provide the cite that you requested. Thanks again :) --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 18:13, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there. Thanks for cleaning up the citations on this page, also. I do want to note that we split off the discussion about the Disease Theory of Alcoholism to its own page, and need to move all references, cites, and most text relating to that to that page, so much of the stuff you fixed will be moved there. I didn't want you to think that we were deleting stuff that you just worked on. Robert Rapplean 15:27, 25 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

AlzheimUr CENTRE

edit

Dear Nunquam, I have introduced a link of a weblog that deals with a Centre for treatment of Alzheimer and it has been removed. Do you know the reasons?

Sincerely, jsmjsm

"Our weblog emerges from the wish to offer an insight into the process of creating ideas for the AlzheimUr Centre. This centre is the reference for the region of Murcia (Spain) to provide a comprehensive attention to the illness of dementia. This weblog is an added tool to the project. Besides proofing the elaboration of different criteria that guide the development of the work, it tries to encourage interactivity with a system of commentaries. This is done in order to enrich the project with significant suggestions. Interdisciplinary collaboration is believed to be an essential part of the architect’s work. Working sessions every day are based on different programmes to develop specific contents and objectives. At the beginning of the first ten days the approach will be very intuitive. Then it will formulate the brief which, without being completely defined, suggests aims and important interests which the project will be based on." Quoted from the first post of the weblog.

I hope this answers your questions on purpose of the blog, location of the centre, etc. Definitely, the design for an Alzheimer Centre is something much more complex than deciding the colours of the dining plates. It requires the strong collaboration of architects, doctors, patients and families. There is not much information on it and this weblog is recollecting facts on this theme. It is a pity to remove information of Wikipedia under such misunderstandings, so I would appreciate if you reconsider your action or somebody more qualified gives an opinion. Sincerely, jsmjsm User talk:Jsmjsm

I saw you added the BU reference--however as has been mentioned on the Talk:Alzheimer's disease page, we have tried to limit references to potential treatments to those that have been validated on large populations. Although it is an interesting study, it was studied in a population of only 9 subjects and does not seem to meet the standard. --Chrispounds 13:03, 24 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Tresco

edit

Hi. Thanks for your edits to the Tresco page. I don't know whether you know the Isles of Scilly, but if you do you'll know that describing Tresco as 'exclusive' is not actually hype, it's factually accurate. Without such an adjective the comparison with the other islands becomes fairly meaningless. However, I have changed it to 'upmarket' in an attempt to make it seem less like hype! Regards Dhmellor 16:02, 16 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your response. Far from being taken from a brochure, it's a warning! Dhmellor 12:31, 17 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that you recreated this article, which was originally deleted due to Wikipedia's speedy deletion criterion A7, which states that articles about people that don't explain how their subject is notable can be deleted. In order to reduce the chance that the article is deleted again, could you please alter the article to make the notability clearer? --ais523 11:38, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

It's usual to warn the creator when putting a speedy-delete tag on or speedily deleting an article; people have been criticised for failure to do so, but I don't think it's a requirement, technically speaking (of course, the spirit of the rules is more important than their letter). I try to always warn an article's creator when requesting its deletion, to give the creator some time to fix the problem; likewise most admins (but presumably not all, or this situation wouldn't have come up) will give the creator some time to fix a problem depending on the reason why deletion was requested. If you want to see the content of the deleted article for help recreating it, you could request that at Deletion Review, but if you know what you wrote and you can explain the notability recreating it is often easier. (I notice there's a {{notability}} tag, a non-deletion cleanup tag, on there at the moment; please read the notability requirements and explain notability, to reduce the chance of the article being deleted again in the future.) Hope that helps! --ais523 12:01, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Mary Seacole spent much of her life in Kingston, Jamaica but there is no mention in the article about her spending a significant amount of time in Kingston-upon-Thames. Hi Walton, Yes, "I never sleep" is a correct translation. Rationale? Possibly "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." - Thomas Jefferson
Good to see my Latin isn't as bad as I thought. As to Jefferson, I also admire some aspects of his philosophy - I guess, after John Stuart Mill, he's the most important figure in early libertarianism - and the quote you cited is particularly relevant to the present day IMHO. I see why you're guarded about the Enig article. It's apparently self-published, uses quotes full of ellipses, and doesn't cite its sources well. Can you chase down the assertions to verify them elsewhere?LeadSongDog (talk) 21:31, 29 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

MG Enig is widely published in oil chemistry and nutrition going back to 1978. (see google scholar) including nine papers listed on PubMed. I don't see any problem with her credentials or notability. The article, though, is another matter. It attacks partially-quoted statements from ill-cited CSPI sources (old brochures, etc.) She also attacks the CSPI as (paraphrasing) a false front for the soy industry. She may be right, but I don't think that her assertions are verified here. If there's a serious debate there ought to be balancing POV. It would appear she's become an advocate for palm oils rich in Lauric acid (C12:0) as a healthier solid fat than PUFA. There's a fair literature to that effect. Of course to my mind that's a choice between bad or worse options, ignoring the availability of good ones (liquid oils). Still, everyone loves a cookie now and then, so there is value in knowing which solid fat is best--it's a discussion worth having.LeadSongDog (talk) 16:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Site Funding info

edit

Hello, I noticed you added who funds the sites for this reference:

Hanson, David J. Ph.D. "Temperance Movement Groups and Leaders in the U.S.". State University of New York. Retrieved 2008-05-17.,

which used on some indiana history related articles. I was merely curious if this indicates the source is not reliable, if so I will endeavor to replace them. The site is manager by the State University of New York. I also curious how you are sure of this because the website claims the funding for the author comes from: "He has received alcohol research grants from federal and state agencies". It also states: "As one who does not require outside research funding, Dr. Hanson is free to draw whatever conclusions logic dictates without regard to whomever might be either pleased or offended." I am curious to your reasoning for adding this information. Thanks Charles Edward 22:43, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

My main problem is that the author has been linking / spamming to his sites (often using sock puppets), which are funded by DISCUS. See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Spam#About 400 links to the two sites of one individual. Although it is a .edu site, that part of is funded by the drinks industry "The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, Inc. provided an unrestricted grant that was used to fund this web site, for which funding also was received from other sources." (in Disclaimer).
Thanks for your prompt reply. That is an understandable reason. I will look for a better ref, but as an FYI it was me who added the references for Frank Hanly and the other Indiana History related articles. Thanks Charles Edward 23:03, 2 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I removed the Candy Lightner citation because of WP:BLP sourcing policy. I don't think any of the citations should remain because even with a disclaimer, they don't meet WP:RS, but the disclaimers are a definite improvement, and the articles may be helpful in finding better sources. Thanks for your thanks, but I was grateful for the opportunity to return the favor after all that you have done for me against this individual. I looked at the links and noticed your comment "It seems he went through a 'phase', peaking in late 2006, of using sock puppets to link to his sites. Heaven knows why." I don't think that you need to look as far as Heaven for the answer. Early September 2006 was when you initiated two counter-attacks against the sock puppets: exposing the attacks against me and the pattern of link-spamming. It seems natural that this would cause some self-consciousness and reassessment by the attacker/spammer. --Ben Best (talk) 12:26, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

edit

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

edit

Hi Nunquam Dormio, I notice your comment on the Talk page of the above IP address suggesting that BT should be contacted in the event of vandalism. I'm not sure that such messages are helpful. Firstly, BT are most unlikely to do anything about it, unless we're talking criminal activity, which would be exceedingly unlikely on Wikipedia. Secondly, and more importantly, such messages may well scare off genuine editors who may come to Wikipedia perhaps on a casual basis. If the dynamic IP has previously been used for vandalism a new user may be deterred from editing for fear of being wrongly accused. Just a thought. Please note that the standard applied for photos on Wikipedia is U.S. law, not anybody else's law; as set out in Wikipedia's non-free content guidelines.

It would be a nightmare if Wikipedia had to obey the content laws of every state in the world, no matter how restrictive or how nasty and censoring regime. Instead, therefore, Wikipedia is careful to keep no assets or servers outside the U.S. state of Florida; and takes U.S. law as its standard on all content questions.

Shackleford

edit

Hello, I noticed that you added a footnote for 'crediting source of sentence' to a pub's web site in Surrey. The sentence as written, giving the derivation of the Shackleford name, was through sources located through google books and took a fair amount of research as I wanted to be sure I was accurate about the statement. I would never lift a sentence from a website. In fact, I suggest that the opposite is true. In any case, I will look up the sources I used and add the appropriate footnote. Vince Cable

edit

Just a note to say congratulations for this edit - http://en.wiki.x.io/w/index.php?title=Vincent_Cable&diff=315870263&oldid=315812592. It's incredible that someone can add a superfluous and inaccurate quote (the Alan Duncan) without a source.... and then see it subsequently turn up in an article in The Guardian, in many blog articles and on the back of Cable's book. It's a ridiculous situation and I'm surprised that such libelous vandalism had legs. UFUU (talk) 02:23, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alan Duncan is well-known for making witty / jocular / facetious comments, which sometimes get him into trouble. I'm surprised that such a comment gets wrenched out of context and presented as sober commentary. Nunquam Dormio (talk) 10:02, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Indeed. To be honest, it was I who vandalised the page, thinking no one would take the quote seriously (i.e. he never said it) and it was suddenly everywhere. It just demonstrates the laziness of journalists, and maybe the fragility of Wikipedia. UFUU (talk) 14:30, 25 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
If that's so, you should definitely go to Private Eye. I'm sure they'd have great fun with the Street of Shame! I did a Google timeline search on the phrase ""the holy grail of economic comment these days" and it does seem to appear first in October 2008, which supports your account. Hello

edit

I think that our prof of sociology is back on the alcohol articles. You may also want to comment on this project talk page.Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine#Alcohol articles An editor is asking questions about the professor. I think that you know more background information than me about this.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 04:49, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I forgot to explain why I suspect the account. Most of the sockpuppets of David Justin were created in 2006 as was the account of the editor who showed up on alcoholism article today. Most of the sockpuppets of David Justin cited his personal website on talk pages and in articles. David Justin campaigns for lowering the alcohol age limit. Similar to David Justin this editor is playing down the risks of drinking in adolescence and cites David Justin's personal website.[2],[3] Your average editor is not going to have a POV on the safety of alcohol abuse in adolescence and cite David Justin's personal website. Furthermore that editor uses the phrase in the diff I just gave "correlation does not imply causation" and wiki links to the wiki article, Correlation implies causation. The phrase correlation does not imply causation is an educated scientific term so it is not likely to be some 14 or 15 year old POVing on their alcohol abuse. The correlation/causation argument was also used by sockpuppets of David Justin,[4],[5]. This editor has made some edits in 2006 unrelated to alcohol so it is possible that they are not connected but when I saw this editor citing David Justin's personal website as well as playing down the risks of alcohol use during adolesence red flags went up in my mind. I wonder has David Justin created a lot more sockpuppet accounts that we do not yet know about which he has done a handful of edits to articles unrelated to alcohol and then ressurects them periodically? Unfortunately sockpuppet investigations won't work because ip logs on wikipedia only go back as far as 3 months. I really hope the old drama is not going to come back. What are your thoughts?--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 07:57, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Another account

edit

You may remember this account,Special:Contributions/Linda,LCADC all of their edits were minimising the harmful effects of alcohol by selectively quoting in the same way as the sociologist the medical literature on alcohol and cancer, eg listing all the cancers alcohol is not associated with, quoting directly out of sources etc just like David Justin to try and minimise the harm. They were last active as late as September the 29th 2009 on wikipedia,[6],[7] so I think our sociologist still keeps an eye on these articles. Check out linda's contribs and you will see what I mean.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 11:42, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for filling your talk page up all of a sudden lol. The LCADC letters stand for Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor. How many drug and alcohol counselors are there out there who are going to devote basically every edit to promoting alcohol and downplaying its risks? I think that they are not who they say they are.--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 13:33, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

A discussion has begun about whether the article Money as Debt, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Money as Debt (3rd nomination) until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 02:12, 29 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

London Wikimedia Fundraiser

edit

Good evening! This is a friendly message from Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry, inviting you to the London Wikimedia Fundraising party on 19th December 2010, in approximately one week. This party is being held at an artistic London venue with room for approximately 300 people, and is being funded by Ed Saperia, a non-Wikipedian who has a reputation for holding exclusive events all over London. This year, he wants to help Wikipedia, and is subsidising a charity event for us. We're keen to get as many Wikimedians coming as possible, and we already have approximately 200 guests, including members of the press, and some mystery guests! More details can be found at http://ten.wiki.x.io/wiki/London - expect an Eigenharp, a mulled wine hot tub, a free hog roast, a haybale amphitheatre and more. If you're interested in coming - and we'd love to have you - please go to the ten.wikipedia page and follow the link to the Facebook event. Signing up on Facebook will add you to the party guestlist. Entry fee is a heavily subsidised £5 and entry is restricted to over 18s. It promises to be a 10th birthday party to remember! If you have any questions, please email me at chasemewiki at gmail.com.

Hope we'll see you there, (and apologies for the talk page spam) - Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 23:37, 12 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Borderline spam.
I too am curious as to why this was removed; it seemed to me to show people from surrounding towns that we in Kingsclere have aquired a rather lovely addition to our already beautiful village; I have just looked at the Wikipedia page for Burghfield, a village nearby, which lists every single shop that exists there! Nunquam, would you be willing to provide some references for this material? Although I'm not a military historian or a veteran contributor, it seems to me that it would not be that difficult to integrate much of this information into the article. I think that first someone should provide the references, and then we can work on moving the information to the proper places in the article.JDefauw (talk) 02:13, 10 August 2012 (UTC)JDefauwReply

I don't know if you are free or inclined, but on the off-chance, may I draw your attention to this forthcoming editathon at the Royal Opera House in June? We need a few experienced Wikipedians to help the ballet buffs get started. If you're not free, or not inclined (or even if you are) could you suggest any other experienced WP editor whom we might try to recruit? – Tim riley (talk) 22:05, 30 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sea Pictures history query

edit

Hi there,

Thanks for your many contributions to the page on Elgar's Sea Pictures.

I noticed that you contributed the line about the songs originally being written in high keys for soprano.

I want to find out more about the original keys, the transposition process (whether it involved any other rearrangement) and related issues regarding the composition of the cycle. Just wondering where you found that information?

Thanks very much!

Ben Hogan

ArbCom elections are now open!

edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Proposed deletion of Linda McCullough Thew

edit

The article Linda McCullough Thew has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Seemingly questionably notable and improvable and AfD would likely have been good for this but it seems perhaps obvious as my searches found nothing better than two links at Books. The listed books are as recent as the 1980s so any archived coverage if any is not going to be that old.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. March Madness 2017

edit

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) & MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

edit

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.
