New pages patrol newsletter

Hello MarkH21,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello MarkH21:

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1400 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Grape Street Watts Crips

You on wikipedia on well informed on LA street gangs, but how I can I blame you. Watts Varrio Grape was the original gang back in the 60-early 70s, but when when Crip gangs started spreading among in South Central in the 70s, the same thing happened with the Hispanic gangs in Los Angeles when the Southside (Surenos) started spreading in Los Angeles. So the blacks who were banging WVG became Grape Street Watts Crips and the Hispanics were banging WVG became Watts Varrio Grape Street 13. In a way they you can say they are the same gang and they're not. But both gangs share the same neighborhood in Watts and both wear purple. You don't need a reliable source for something like that. TwoNyce (talk) 18:59, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

You need a reliable source for everything once someone has objected to it, per WP:BURDEN. --JBL (talk) 19:06, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Re: January 2024

Sorry if you don't like that comment. I might have had a wrong impression. Don't take it personally though. I would say the same to a renowned scholar who is not specialized in Vietnamese studies. It was just my observation of how generally bad Wikipedia articles on Vietnamese history currently are, especially in light of many advancements in this field. Editing Question

I made edits to a wikipedia page for Aaron Cohen-Gadol and some edits were approved but then you removed portions I did not edit were completely removed including a prestigious award and honor - how do I get that back ElianaAmram (talk) 22:57, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

@ElianaAmram: Please see the urgent warnings on your talk page about paid editing and conflicts of interest. Wikipedia is also not a place for any kind of promotion. — MarkH21talk 23:01, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Sorry I am new to this process and not being paid for edits just trying to make sure the page reflects accurate data. I'd hate that my updates to indicate a new job removed pertinent information. ElianaAmram (talk) 23:02, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
@ElianaAmram: You have no monetary relationship whatsoever with any entity, company, or institution related to Aaron Cohen-Gadol, including The Neurosurgical Atlas or the universities & hospitals he has worked with? Or unpaid relationships of any kind? — MarkH21talk 23:05, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
I added a paid disclosure to my user page. In terms of conflict of interest, do I disclose that when I submit my edits? Thank you for your patience as I learn this. ElianaAmram (talk) 23:19, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
Replied at User talk:ElianaAmram. — MarkH21talk 23:55, 22 June 2024 (UTC)

Propose change to Hanoi page's info box

Hello,

I found a beautiful photo of the Hanoi skyline over West lake that looks a lot better than the current skyline photo. I would like to make this change. I also think the Huong Temple photo at the bottom looks bad and doesn't represent Hanoi well. I think an alternative is to include a photo of the Tran Quoc Pagoda or the Hanoi Cathedral since it would look better. Please let me know what you think! Thank you! JamesVuBigBrain (talk) 06:05, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

@JamesVuBigBrain: Unfortunately File:Hanoi_Skyline_over_West Lake.jpg, which you uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, is a copyright violation of a photo owned by National Geographic Partners, LLC. We generally cannot upload and use photos taken like that from other entities without permission. Please see the Wikipedia policy on image use.
For the other photo, you can propose a change at Talk:Hanoi. I don't agree that the specific pagoda photo you added is clear though, mainly because the pagoda is not well-framed in the photo. You are still free to propose changes on the talk page though. — MarkH21talk 06:12, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
The Hanoi skyline photo over West Lake is not owned by National Geographic, it's owned by Getty Images and NatGeo used their photos. I'm not entirely familiar with the specifics of it, but aren't Getty Images generally free to use since they are widely available on the internet? Even if they aren't free to use, if I purchase a license and get permission from them, I should be able to use their photos? Please clarify what the policies are. Thanks! JamesVuBigBrain (talk) 04:05, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
@JamesVuBigBrain: Even photos owned by Getty Images have specific licenses. You can no just upload it and claim it is public domain. You need to be very careful with the specific licensing/copyright/ownership and attribute it accurately (if it's even usable on Wikipedia).
Again, the relevant Wikipedia image use policy is here. Read it carefully (and the relevant links) before handling images. Once an image passes the image use policy and can be uploaded, there is also the image style guide about when and how to include appropriate images in articles. — MarkH21talk 04:46, 16 July 2024 (UTC)
